Orange Italian ice cream, smallest size.
    Emeline F.

Hmmm. So Italian ice is not for me, so take that into consideration. It's more like shaved ice than ice cream, and by the time I finished my small serving I was bored despite being an ice cream fiend. It was $4.50 for the smallest size. The service was good, and the reason for the second star. Prompt and helpful, though I would've appreciated the courtesy of some fake cleaning or something while I was making my decision. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The ambiance was bleak, frankly. The white on white was full on hospital-minimalism.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]On top of that, there were a bunch of flies inside which is just a bit gross.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]The only thing in favor of the ambiance was the lack of loud music, and the small table outside.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Not planning on going back.

Happy to see they finally put the space here to good use - just in time for the end of summer but perhaps a bit early for the fall/winter. Nonetheless, shaved ice sorbets are a definite plus any day of the year. They have a variety of options to choose from - many of which are vegan/gluten-free, which makes it more inclusive of all diets. Their vegan chocolate based items are made with agave and coconut milk, so it's a bit flakier than dairy cream shaved ice. However, I still appreciate having such an option. I got two small scoops for my visit and they were great. Only thing is that they actually were quite small compared to what I'm used to at other shops. Their small feels like a kid's scoop in other places. Service was very friendly and not busy when we went. I imagine their busy season will return when the next heat wave arrives to town.

[[HIGHLIGHT]]It was my first time trying this joint and seemed perfect on a warm sunny day.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The owner explained everything to me as a first timer and was always happy to help. I got the small Wild Raspberry flavor and it was great! I'm looking forward to stopping by during the summer months.

I was walking around the area and noticed the sign for Italian Ice, I decided to step in and try it out. The ladies helping us out were super friendly and let us try quite a few flavors which was nice because it was our first time here. All ice cream is dairy free- and from the samples that I tried they are not too sweet & super refreshing Its a small ice cream shop with lots of flavors to choose from. I loved the guava, passion fruit, pistachio and raspberry flavors. I will definitely be returning to try more flavors

Visiting Santa Cruz and saw a sign for the place. I liked Rita's Italian Ice, so I wanted to try the place out and I think Izzy's is better. Izzy's has a lot more flavors available compared to Rita's which I'm glad for. Definitely was hard to choose, but the owner let me and my bf try a few options to narrow down our choices. He was super friendly and nice. If I lived in the area I would definitely be a frequent visitor. The location is a little hidden as it's not on the main busy street of downtown. Luckily my bf saw the sign which lead us to visit.

Run don't walk to get the best Italian ice on the left coast! What treat to find this place new addition this year to downtown. The chocolate and lemon are legit New York ! Can't wait to go back and the guy working there Saturday night was the nicest. They're not in the hub of foot traffic but hope they get a following. A must on the Santa Cruz to eat list!

I didn't mind at first because there were two other employees standing at the front, so I assumed one of them would help us. I understand if the other employees weren't assigned to the register, but what bothered me was that no one even took a second to say, "We'll be with you shortly." A simple acknowledgment goes a long way and would have made a big difference. The lack of customer service and communication made us feel ignored so we just ended up leaving and went some place else. As someone who has supported this business for a long time, it was disappointing. I hope management addresses this because good customer service is just as important as the product itself.

(AI, y'all) A few weeks later we were in downtown SC and decided to try it out -- so glad we did. It's a small operation with brightly colored walls and a few stools to sit on. They make every serving by hand. This is fresh fruit whipped into a vanilla ice cream base which they claim it's healthier than traditional ice cream -- probably true. Ordering is simple: 1. Choose size base on the container 2. Chose one of four flavors 3. Add toppings or not We tried raspberry with coconut flakes and strawberry with rainbow sprinkles. Both were very good but the strawberry tasted fruitier and was a little sweeter so wins by a hair. On Thursdays they have tropical flavors -- I'm coming back for banana and mango. The attendant was helpful and friendly, and truly seemed to believe in their mission. One caveat: the ice cream is relatively expensive. I think it's worth it however.

Ultimately, we came here because the other one that we wanted to go to down the street had a line into the parking lot. In hindsight, we probably should have just waited. The ice cream here just didn't stand out. It melted too quickly-almost like it wasn't really kept cold cold. The flavors meshed together and didn't really pop and you know something is odd when after going through 4 flavors, the lady up front say, "that's the best", or "that's one of my favorites" to each and every one of them. Getting your order mixed up was also a deduction. I wanted a brownie sundae and because she was out of hot fudge, asked if that could be replaced with caramel. I said yes, but ended up just getting a caramel sundae without the brownies?! Unfortunately I didn't notice until after I sat down with my sundae to which point, I just didn't care enough to get it fixed. The place seemed dingy and confused. Chocolate in downtown Santa Cruz is the place to go. There is a charming outdoor patio with flower beds and striped awnings, reminiscent of old Paris. Or you can opt to sit indoors for a moody, romantic vibe. Since I was there for a dessert date with my little one, we chose to sit outside. Water was served in a wine bottle (cute detail) and little shapely glasses. The Parisian feel continued with the round tables and small chairs as well as the neon-lit signs. The menu was vast with savory dinner and lunch items, wines, cocktails, an entire page of hot cocoas and mochas.... and of course an entire section dedicated to chocolate desserts! My daughter and I shared 2 desserts: a chocolate soufflé layered with chocolate cake and cherries and dulce de leche cake. The service was swift and friendly, and most importantly, the cakes were decadent! They were perfectly moist and weren't too sweet. We both thought the Dulce de Leche cake was our favorite because we could taste the cake more and the subtle vanilla hints were nice. It paired well with my tea. We ordered: - pasta pork bolognese: Large portion but it was just ok. - miso salmon fillet: my SO enjoyed this. Wasn't overcooked so still nice and buttery. Nice flavor. Might just be me but rather small portion for around $30? With sides come out to about $40. I may be unfair to the here given the outrageous rent they most likely pay here. - broccoli entree: regular broccoli, no char (streamed?) and sauce was meh and didn't come with the fried garlic topping as mentioned. Honestly came off as (some) sauce and frozen broccoli for $13. Again, maybe it's the rent driving the prices up but I truly think they could do at least a bit better. - chocolate orange tequila, glass of wine: admittedly we are out of our depth to comment on these. Overall, we enjoyed ourselves and I don't regret going, but unfortunately most likely won't be returning. We've been so excited to go too :/
