Amazing Chocolate Strawberry Shortcake!!
Patty S.

Wonderfully delicious way to spend an overcast summer afternoon. Great service and a menu of fresh ingredients local ingredients that we can't wait to return and continue to explore!

This place is so beautiful and cozy! We sat outside on a beautiful sunny afternoon on Sunday after a long walk. We both had the chicken soup and the Mediterranean salad with a side of chicken to add to our salads. Both were delicious and fresh! The service was fast yet the server was just subpar. Just wasn't very friendly. Otherwise, yes I'll come back. There's only street parking. However, there is a parking garage just around the corner. Easy to get to and reasonable pricing.

Chocolate, cherry, rum, and chocolate orange tequila martinis. Chicken mole and rosettes.

Lovely little spot, outside on the patio with the striped awning, French music, and plants all around made me feel like I was in a European café. The cocktails were fun in the meal, healthy and delicious. The mud pie . I don't eat sweets often, but this was probably one of the best I've ever had. Lovely staff.

Had the most amazing dessert, so decadent! Delicious cake, ganache and gelato! Will definitely come again!

Well drinks were amazing. Definitely worth the stop. Desserts were delicious as well. Service was fast and friendly. They have the cutest outside seating area. We got lucky to sit next the the water fountain which made awesome back ground for our selfies, lol. Worth a stop for sure. Cant wait to come back and try the food!

Went here for the first time to celebrate my fiancé's birthday. Made reservations on Open Table and added special instructions to please bring out a candle with the dessert. They did just that and from beginning to end the experience was flawless. The waiter was super nice and attentive, the appetizer came out fast and they didn't bring the entree until we were done with the app. So many places either rush to get food out too fast, or you have to wait a long time. Their timing was perfect. The weather was outstanding, so eating outside was amazing. Each dish was absolutely delicious. We will definitely be back.

Very cute place with great service. This is the best chocolate drink in town. There's a variety of hot chocolate options, and you can even add a shot of whiskey. I really loved the Victoria chocolate and the chocolate cream pie on the side. Chef's kiss!

Easy booking on OpenTable.com Located in downtown Santa Cruz. Booked for 4 people, an Early Mother's Day dinner celebration on a Saturday evening. We were seated immediately after checking in. Indoor and outdoor seating. Great service, server gave good recommendations, checked on us frequently. Started off with drinks, Chocolate espresso martini tasted great, coconut chocolate Martini was so strong, it got me smiling from ear to ear. We Shared focaccia with marina & pesto sauce. - scrumptious. Shared our entree, tortellini pasta with bolognese sauce. Delicious and filling. GF & daughter shared a ricotta with bolognese- so tasty. At end of meal, we shared 2 desserts of espresso tiramisu- sweet cream, layered cake drowned in espresso sauce - yum. Also A warm big chocolate cupcake which was like a molten lava cake. Chocolate Was bitter sweet, perfect. We all were so pleased with our dinner and dessert choices.

I've really enjoyed all my experiences at Chocolate over the years. The menu is very gluten-free friendly, both savory and sweet. I have brought my young daughter on a handful of occasions and also have enjoyed this place for a romantic date spot, too. If you can settle into the downtown vibe (iykyk), this is a wonderful place for dinner. I guarantee you'll leave with a full belly!

Such a charming restaurant setting, especially the patio seating area, with decorative string lights, a beautiful fountain, and outdoor heaters providing a comfortable dine-in experience on a cool Sunday evening. The chocolate flavors are definitely intense here, in their food and drinks, but they offer so much more on their menu. For cocktails, we tried the chocolate martini (which had a bit of spice), strawberry cosmo, passion fruit margarita, and gin and tonic (with the more herby venus 2 gin). All of the drinks were tasty and strong in alcohol, and presented nicely as well. For dinner, we had the chicken pie (with salad), chicken mo'le (spicy poblano), and for dessert, the chocolate strawberry shortcake from their specials menu, along with the dulce de leche chocolate layer cake. OMG, everything was so delicious, loved the the crumbly crust and savory flavors in that chicken pie, especially with gravy poured over it. And those desserts were so decadent and yummy, particularly the strawberry shortcake special with strawberries baked into the chocolate cake plus fresh strawberries on top, it was beyond good! Service was wonderful as well, staff was friendly and welcoming and checked on us frequently during our visit. Lots to love about this place, I will definitely be back for more. A perfect date spot for sure, they take reservations too!

Dessert orgy

Amazing hot cocoa and dessert flight (they call it dessert orgy ;) ). Nicely shaded patio and very chill vibe. It's like a heaven for chocolate lovers, they have like a dozen types of different hot chocolates to choose from, as well as chocolate cocktails. A little bit hard to notice when you walk by, but definitely recommend

Salmon and black bean bites

We booked ahead for Valentine's Day. After reading reviews, I was on the fence but gave them the benefit of the doubt. Here we go. Do not sit outside if it's cold. The heaters do not help. There aren't enough of them and you will be frozen by the time your meal arrives. The menu is eclectic. I finally got the salmon bite and black bean appetizer because it was the only thing that didn't look heavy. It was burnt to jerky. They did take it off the check. But only after we reminded them, because it was still on the unitemized. The portions in general are very small, so order accordingly. It looked like they were understaffed. Our waitress was the hostess and she did her best to help us and do her job. We felt like we were kinda abandoned in spite of her best efforts, one person can only do so much. It was nice to see the parade of people and dogs walking past us. After one glass of wine, I was ready to move on to warmth and comfort somewhere else.

3% fee for credit cards…read more I highly recommend the distillery tour. Book it in advance. It's super informative and fun. Afterward, there is a tasting of each spirit; however, the pours are very small; about 1/4 ounce of each spirit. It's such a small taste that it's not much more than "smelling" the gin. Which is fine. They make a total of 21 spirits, including 7 whiskeys. Highlights: For their gin, they use Lambic potstills; they have no column stills with baskets. Since they only use potstills, they macerate all the botanicals; it's a "wet" gin. Gin 01 is the flagship, and loaded with lavender. They sell 10000 cases per year. It's available at Whole Foods state-wide, and at the Santa Cruz Costco. Costo sells Gin 01 for $28, a significant discount from the $34 price at the distillery. Gin 01 works best with floral and citrusy cocktails like a corpse reviver #2. Gin 02 is a lightly barrel aged gin. It's aged for 2 months, and each barrel gets used twice. The gin is infused with bay leaf, sage, and fennel: it's more savory. They use bay leaf foraged at Delaveaga park, and they get sage and fennel from a farm nearby. I detected a cedar flavor. It's better with heavier cocktails, like a Paper Plane. They do seasonal gins: One for each season. For gin and tonics served at the distillery, they make their own tonic: it has a lavender note. It also uses chinchona, bitter orange, grapefruit, and elderflower. They have blue agave spirits. They get agave from farms in Yolo county. The farms do the pit roasting for them. The blanco tequila uses champagne yeast. The reposado spirit is aged for 11 months. Their mezcal is more peppery, less smokey. For whiskey: - They have a Port barrel finished whiskey that is really tasty. - I thought the rye was very sweet. - For their peated whiskey, they use malted barley imported from Scotland. Their single malt uses a crystal malt. Overall, it was a very fun visit.

Unfortunately it went downhill from there. I spoke with my waitress to inquire about dairy free vegan options. Not much but I did order a Ba mi sandwich with mushroom. What came was a pork version ~ definitely not vegan. If it were my call , the sandwich I then had to wait for would have been on the house. No such luck. This is not all. Where I was seated by hostess was definitely the world's worst table in the absolute flow of an onslaught of wait staff delivering everything from the kitchen and busing dishes. It was awful. Since my order had already been messed, I did not have the heart to ask about moving. This was an all time worst dining experience. I will never return here again. I have enjoyed the other Venus in Seascape. But these folks were inattentive and lacking empathy. Even their martini was sub standard. Not so at the other Venus.

The drinks here did not disappoint, they were well balanced and hit the spot perfectly. We perused the bar menu since that's all that was open at this point, and while so much sounded good, we ended up doing a custom order for a regular side of fries and the onion dip that normally comes with chips. Fries were good, not my favorite kind, but still good, and the onion dip was really great! The bar and surrounding area was open seating. We got a table close to the bar, so some ocean views just from a far. Service was friendly and even though it was pretty crowded, we never had to wait too long to be checked in on.

A restaurant dedicated to The Cheese. Cool…read more I moved from Santa Clara to Santa Cruz in 1972 and thought I'd died and gone to heaven. I bought my first website from the O'Neill dive shop at the Harbor. Learned to surf at Cowells Beach, wearing O'Neill Seal Suits and Super Suits and Animal Skins, chasing Jack O'Neill around in his balloon with Mad Mike driving. Timmy O'Neill pushed me out of a dingy in the harbor channel once but I've forgiven him. They called Jack "The Cheese" but apparently I've been gone a while because I wasn't aware there was an entire restaurant, bar and lounge dedicated to The Cheese. Went there on a Thursday night in June and didn't have enough quarters to pay the parking meters on that uphill. Got lucky and found a parking space at Cowell's and used the change machine to get $5 in quarters, which is what it cost to park for a couple hours. Walked past a mural dedicated to several decades of Jack O'Neill going back to the 1950s: wetsuits, boats, hot air balloons, smiling girls. The air smelled like stale fish and salt. Inside was a clean, well-lighted place somewhere between funky and luxury .But closer to luxury. They've done a nice job with this place. The prices are reasonable in a city and a state and a time where prices can be unreasonable. Sat at a table up against the window, with a view over Cowells and the wharf and the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk and the lights of all the fishing boats in the bay I ordered the loaded fries with avocado, which is kind of like french fry nachos. And they were good. Lots of Cheese. It's a smart idea to dedicate an entire restaurant to The Cheese, as this place is over the dirt where the first O'Neill Surf Shop was in Santa Cruz was way back when starting around 1959 when Jack moved his business and his family down to Santa Cruz and was perfectly positioned for the surf boom lit by the movie Gidget that exploded into the Beach Boys and Frankie and Annette and everybody went surfing. Only glitch was when I asked the bartender for the bathroom code and he looked at me askance and wouldn't give it up. He said it was for hotel guests only. Aren't food establishments required to provide bathrooms to customers? If I had any friends, I would take them to the Jack O'Neill Restaurant and Lounge. It's got atmosphere. P.S I've interviewed around a dozen white shark attack victims. I get their stories and tell them: "You had a rough day. I'll see if I can get you a new wetsuit. Look at the O'Neill catalogue and tell me what you want and I'll call Pat O'Neill." And Pat always comes through with quality neoprene, so maybe a restaurant for him some day?

He liked the sauce too, but used far less of it! The place is definitely Tiki-themed and the ambiance was casual and matched it.
