The twin pools is a great idea, since the pool with the slide and the lower depth attracts the children.... with their full bladders, if you know what I mean. A once nice exercise venue, machines, free weights, cardio, basketball (3 indoor courts), main pool, children's activty pool, hot tub, steam sauna, four large locker rooms plus family changing areas, and a dynamite list of classes. My family does Tai Chi, Zumba, Pilates, and Yoga-lates. Family prices and guest day passes are pricey (way too high and keep going up) and they keep pulling machines off the floor to furnish new satellite YMCAs without replacing them (causing long waits at peak times) ... but at least their classes are free. Their costs would be lower and equipment more available if they didn't give out so many free or reduced cost memberships to economically depressed families. I'm not saying it's bad ... I'm just saying I'm tired of paying the increasing prices, with no say in how many free memberships they give out. They do not promote a healthy life-style. All their vending machines are filled with high calorie junk food. Asking them to change ... anything ... using a request card is pointless. They are not resonsive to their membership. The facility is not kept very clean (extremely dirty in the multi-purpose studio where people sweat, shed hair and skin, and then lie on the floor ... ick!) We always ask for a dust broom (we would sweep the room ourselves) but evidently a staff member has to do it ... and they don't. Look for giant dust and hair bunnies under the ball racks and aerobic steps ... so big that they stare back at you and make menacing noises! They fail to give the awards for their fitness program ... they no longer give towels ... they change hours with no regard for members needs ... and they have way too many desk staffers that do nothing but chat with each other ... and long periods during the day when there are no trainers available in the machine/weight area (unsafe). I believe that they are poorly run/managed and would do much better with a new president/manager who would take time to talk to the people ... rather than act like the prince of the gym. Why are we still going here? Because our friends and class instructors are here. But maybe we should all move en masse to the Gainsville Bodyplex. I hear that it is much nicer ... just no pool ... but we have Frances Meadows pool available for that. Are you listening YMCA? Get fixed, or we will get gone. read more

I've been back to the Y with my friend a few times, and wanted to update based on further experiences. This is never going to be a 4-5 star facility. It's just not. HOWEVER, there are some redeeming qualities that I have discovered and wanted to expand upon since my first review was based on a very limited experience. First, I've discovered the joy of spin class. I've taken two at this Y, with two different instructors and thoroughly enjoyed both classes. The spin room is very small and accommodates a limited number of riders, but thus far I've not seen a full class. The room is well ventilated, and the instructors have both been competent and helpful. Second, I took a yoga class this week at the Y, and I discovered that not all yoga instructors are created equal. Not that this instructor wasn't knowlegable, but her directions were sometimes hard to follow - especially since I have to base my practice on what she's saying since I cannot see her without my glasses on (and add to that the fact that the room is dark and there were a LOT of people in class, and I was in the back row... even had I had direct line of sight to her, I'd have had a hard time seeing what she was doing.... So the vocal cues and specifics on which direction, which leg, etc would have been helpful. In general the class was OK, but I prefer my current yoga studio at this point. The cardio machines that I've used thus far are clean and in good working order. There are plenty of them, and I've not yet had to wait for anything, which is nice. The pool is still a sticking point for me. It's still too warm, and still not clean. And there's still no posted schedule, so it's very hit or miss on whether or not you're going to be able to have a lane to swim laps in or not. Planning ahead just isn't realistic. So at this point I still plan to hit the aquatic center more often than not since I know there are dedicated lap swim lanes each day there, and the pool is cool and clean. I did also check out the sauna and the jacuzzi. The sauna is OK - nothing to write home about, but it functions appropriately. The jacuzzi is not fantastic. Some of the jets work and some don't. If you get there and it's empty, you'll be able to hit a working jet, but if there are a couple people there already, then getting in is relatively pointless if you're looking for jets to help work out any kinks. Would be nice if they maintained it and got the jets all working properly. The locker room is adequate, and seems to be well maintained. So over-all they've moved up a little in my book, but I still wouldn't pay the high monthly membership cost. At this point the few perks still don't make up for the issues, and I'd still prefer to workout at home or outside. read more

If you are looking for a family-friendly environment, this is a good one. They try hard to meet the desires and needs of everyone, from the babies who receive a welcoming set of arms at check-in to the Special adults who find a safe, welcoming place to shoot hoops. Seniors roam the halls without being treated like they are a bother, and nobody seems to care about whether their hair is messy or they have sweat stains on their clothes. That being said, I never go in there without seeing someone either cleaning or making repairs. They pay constant attention to their facility, and I rarely see a sign saying something is out of order or needing repairs. In the wellness area, there is always someone willing to help me, to show me the right way to do an exercise, or explain how to best use a piece of equipment. They are always adding more classes, trying to keep things interesting and fun. They have an active Senior adults group, that feels like an extended family. They don't treat Seniors like invalids, nor do they push them to do more than they should be doing. They seem to love the activities and really look like they are having fun! I like that they have the indoor family pool with the water slide and rain tree. It is nice to see the kids having fun, while still being free to swim in the lap pool without worrying about running over a child. Finally, I have noticed that they always have at least 2 guards on the deck, and they seem to switch out frequently, especially when the pool is busy. Lastly, I like that this is a private, non-profit organization. They could probably lower their prices if they were government supported, but they don't want to sacrifice the faith aspect of their organization. Whether you share their faith or not, it's nice to know what they base their business practices upon. I also understand that they try to work with prospective member who cannot afford the membership, offering discounts when it's warranted. And they offer Veterans (and current Military) a significant discount. All in all, this is a place I can, in many ways, support. read more

Been with YMCA for several years, the facilities are pretty good and the staff are nice. The reason I gave a one star is their deceitful business practice. I had cancel my account about a year, give or take, and one day I went to visit. They just have change to a new software system on their computer for a few months now. When I check in they told me I had a balance of a thousand dollars on their new software system, but according to their old software system I had no balance, payment was all made. I ask why was I not notify before? Looking at the transaction, my rate also went up, double to be exact, for a few months and then back to my regular rate per month. How could it just go up on its own, very deceitful business practice. I did not receive any notice, no emails, no phone calls, no follow up. If I had not come to visit how long would this have gone and how much more money would show in my balance. They claim they have not receive of my cancellation. I told them they are mistaken, I turn my cancellation in person. I really like the facility and staff, but not for their deceitful business practice of stealing peoples money. read more

My wife and I joined Georgia Mtn YMCA about two years ago when we moved to the area. When we moved to Georgia from the west, we picked a place next door to the Y on Ashford Dunwoody because there was a gate to the Y. We have been members of clubs and YMCA's across the nation. I was a nationally ranked swimmer in college and I know pools and facilities. This is one of the best all round facilities we have been members of. We use the treadmills and weight room then take several yoga classes on monday and wednesday mornings. THey have a Yoga teacher named Amy who is the best instructor for yoga we have ever experienced. She is a very dedicated person when it comes to the philosophy and functions of why to do yoga. After our first class with her, I turned to my wife and told her, "this is the best Yoga class I have ever had." We see many of the same people over and over coming to the same class and it has gotten to be a very open group of friends taking the class. We are improving together and making what Amy calls "Progress". Some of the other instructors come from a pilates background and are more young person work out orientation. Amy's classes are for traditional and restorative for us retired people. I do not agree with the low reviews of the others here. You bring into a facility your own problems from home. The staff is friendly, there are a bunch of volunteers who help out. If you want to swim in a clean pool, work out early. I have never seen the main workout room to be dirty. I have seen the staff come in to clean and wipe it down. And, we pay the normal family rate for two retired people. If you want stuffy go join a country club. read more

I am a charters member at the Y , that means I have been coming here since day one. The first couple of years it was a well run machine ,every thing worked , maintenance was done, etc. The the mgt changed . Since then down hill . Let's start with the pools , poor maint. Jets in hot tub do not work, blowers do not work, every thing is filthy. There is even black mold on the edge of the hot tub.The steam room used to be pressured washed weekly and cleaned daily, I asked the other day they couldn't tell me the last time it was washed. I put a piece of paper in there as a marker as I did in the locker room . The one in locker room remained three days the one in the steam room two and a half weeks. That means these areas are not being cleaned . Other ppl have experienced the same. The exercise room is dusty and dirty , just look up at the fans , you will see an inch of dust on them . The do try to clean the machines but this is everyone's responsibility. You should clean them after use. The final straw came when we booked a birthday party for our6yr old grandchild we rented the room and bouncy houses. All invitations went out we got RSVPs and a week before the event we were called and left a message on our phone saying "the bouncy houses are not available" that's it no I'm sorry , no let's see what we can do , nothing . We were lucky to see we had a message , I called the Y and talked to a young man who said he was the Mng on duty ,told him what was going on , he said he would have someone get back to me on Monday . We are already pressed for time at this point . I said no they had to do something now He called me back and offered me a swim party instead , I had to accept , because everyone was coming. My granddaughter does not swim yet neither does most of her friend , they will play in the kids pool and if they have the correct lifeguards they all will be safe. But I have a 6yr old very upset , all because the Y is mismanaged. After this I will be calling the health dept to inspect this facility and I will be taking my membership elsewhere. read more

I totally disagree with this review! I have been a member of this YMCA for 9 months and me and my family love it. It is the cleanest fitness center that I have ever been to and the staff is very friendly. We enjoy the fitness center, pool, childcare, gym and all of the other great amentities that this great facility has to offer. I appreciate that the YMCA makes it's services available to even those who may not otherwise be able to afford them....I believe that is what qualifies it to be a YMCA and non-profit organization! Especially in an economic time where people are out of work and down on their luck. If people were not given help during this time, what type of community would we be. Have you voiced your concerns to anyone at the Y because I have found that they are always willing to listen and help if needed. I will definitely direct management to your post so that they can see what it says and hopefully they will respond. I truly feel this is an untrue review concerning this organization that is helping this community become healthier and to instill good, christian values in children and families. Note about vending machines....we all have choices to eat healthy or to eat junk food....the Y is not making me choose the Snicker bar over the trail mix....I make that choice. It is about self control and choices. They do so much good in our community for so many people and this is very sad that you have put such an unfair and unjust review as this!
