Be forewarned. J&J is more expensive than a cookie cutter Home Depot job, but what you get is worth it. We had two projects done and they were 100% customizable. We were even able to sit with and adjust the electronic designs in their studio. They subcontracted with a painter who did great work and was really easy to work with. The guys from J&J were responsive and did things when they said they would. We were not super picky, but when we asked them to move a knob or drill an additional hole, they were happy to do it. I hired J&J after getting a couple of quotes to do counters and slight remodel of kitchen and 2 baths. They gave me a complete quote and I really appreciated how they broke down the payment schedule and listed the "phases" in the which things were to be done. They were readily available by text whenever I had a question. I would even ask their opinion on certain design aspects and they gave good input. All the workers that came into my house to work were polite and easy going. We are almost to the finish line and we just added another project for them to do. Due to a leak in our shower, we recently had to renovate nearly our whole bathroom. After soliciting 5 bids for the project, we chose J & J Quality Construction, in part because they were one of the few bids that we received that was willing to do tile in the shower rather than a pre-fabricated acrylic system and because they were willing to re-use our existing custom glass shower surround. They happened to be the cheapest bid that we received, but that was not actually a primary reason for our choice. The experience was solidly mediocre, as highlighted here: Pros: --Fast Response Time: We had a number of questions throughout the project. Every time that we contacted the company (which was pretty frequently), we received a prompt and courteous response. This was especially important at one point in the project (detailed under the "Cons" below). --Flexibility: We had a number of questions and requests prior to signing on with J & J. They were very willing to work with us to make sure that we had a contract that was satisfactory. --Great Finished Product: The end product was really nice. We were pleased with the results, and as the pictures show, the project turned out quite well. We were generally impressed with the quality of the workmanship Cons: --Breach of Contract: I'll start with what was the most egregious issue. We had some specific issues that we wanted to see covered in the contract, and J & J was very patient in a number of back-and-forth e-mails to get this just right. I thought that meant that the contract (which specified the exact dimensions and placement of a shower niche) would be followed. That was not the case. In the process of demolition, they discovered some unexpected plumbing in the wall where the niche was slated to go. However, rather than tell us, explain options to us, and/or discuss next steps with us, they simply changed the orientation, dimensions, and location of the niche without any communication. We only discovered the change because we happened to look in on the project, not because they even let us know after the fact. While they did apologize and promise that it wouldn't happen again (thankfully, it didn't!), we were still disappointed that they would treat these details of the contract so flippantly. --Subcontractors Galore: I recognize that the upside of having subcontractors work on projects like this is that experts are working at each aspect of the job. The downsides are that scheduling becomes more problematic, communication is tricky (do we talk to J & J or the subcontractor?), there is a steady stream of relative strangers parading through the house, and little work was actually done by J & J Construction themselves. This also meant that although we signed off on the subcontractor list, we weren't provided with options. In one case, this was a bit concerning as an internet search on one of their subcontractors suggested that the subcontractor was being investigated for fraud. That comment was concerning enough that had we been given a choice, I would have chosen another option. --Flooding Left in Bathroom: After installing the shower pan, water was left in the pan to test its integrity. However, we were not living at the house for the duration of the project, and we were never informed of this test, which was started on Friday. Fortunately, we happened to stop by the house on Saturday morning. At that point, we discovered that the shower pan had NOT maintained its integrity, and instead, we had a large puddle of water flooding our bathroom floor. Had we not happened to be there, this puddle would have sat for another 48 hours. Given the potential problems from flooding we should have either (a) been alerted to this test or (b) had this done during the work week. (However, to be completely fair, as soon as we contacted J & J, they immediately sent out the relevant subcontractor to clean up the mess. So, the very fast response time was especially helpful here.) --Estimated Completion Time: I recognize that nearly all construction projects take longer for one reason or another. However, I was not prepared for the project to take nearly double the estimated time. When we signed the contract, the contract specified an estimated completion date of 4 weeks. In actuality, it was nearly 7 weeks until the project was done. Along the way we were also given several other estimates of completion before finally being done. (It's an exaggeration, but it felt like we were perpetually being told that it would be done "next week.") All told, the overall experience with J & J Quality Construction was solidly middle of the road. The actual finished product was really lovely, but the journey to getting there was decidedly less so. Would I bash this company and tell everyone to stay away? No, certainly not. Would I provide rave reviews and recommend them to all my friends? Also, probably not. read more

Recently wrapped up a bathroom remodel and very happy with the process and the results. Based on the reviews below, I can't speak to their cost....because of all the companies I contacted, only J&J responded! which says a lot in my opinion. When you call, someone picks up and the email communication is good. The project manager texted me updates and arrival/departure times so I didn't have to wonder if I could lock the doors. The crew delivered on what they promised, and the bathroom is lovely. I like the payment system: a small deposit, and then payment on regular dates as the work progresses (new to me). The attention to detail was good, the crew were pleasant and intent on their work. They left the house in good shape. I will use them again for another remodeling job. read more

With J&J you are getting a project scheduling service. They did very little of the actual work for a bathroom remodel project. They subcontract the demo, the new construction, the drywall, the electric, the plumbing, the tile, the paint. So what you are paying for is their connections. Sometimes it felt like the work was given to the lowest bidder especially for paint and drywall. From the beginning we wanted a quality project not the lowest bidder. Painting and drywall phases of the project required multiple repeat visits by the contracted parties. The problem is J&J don't seem to have the best quality control. It felt like everything was fine as long as the homeowner didn't say anything about it. Other services were great like tile and plumbing. Some of the subcontractors said everything always felt like it was rushed and last minute with very little guidance by J&J. It was up to the homeowner to give instructions on the jobsite only to have the subcontractor say thats not what we are contracted for. It was very frustrating at times. The two guys that seem to be tandem project leads seemed like good cop bad cop. One would make excuses and the other would try his best to make things right for the customer. As a final note our neighbor wanted to see our bathroom after completion to possibly hire J&J to do a project for her. We told her about the various headaches we had during our project and I think she is looking elsewhere. read more

J & J Quality Construction remodeled our kitchen which included taking out a wall and building and installing completely new cabinets. They worked with us to keep our existing floor and were careful to remove it and then later re-install it. Further, they accommodated our wish for a butcher block countertop instead of the typical stone. They were extremely professional throughout the entire process. We received text messages the day before someone was scheduled to come and the workers were punctual and hard working. Further, everyone was very friendly. I want to start off by saying I feel bad for leaving this review, because the owners are very nice people. Also, I apologize in advance for how ridiculously long this review is. As a pre-cursor, my husband and I are very detail-oriented people, so what bothered us may not bother other people. I hired J&J's for the remodel of 3 bathrooms (2 hall baths and a master bath). They were the 2nd most expensive, out of 3 quotes we got. I thought we would be pretty safe going with the middle price range, and I got a good vibe from Robert when he came to give us the quote. Below are the Pros and Cons we experienced while working with them: Pros: - Finished all 3 bathrooms. - All 3 bathrooms ended up looking good overall. - Everything we pointed out to them, they attempted to rectify. Cons: - Not all materials were included in the initial quote, like cement boards underneath tile on second floor, towel bars, and toilet paper holders. I assumed everything would be covered in the $30k quote. - Not good at communication, and inconsistent with start times. They started off saying they would start at 7:30am. Then some days they weren't there until noon, and some days not at all. It makes a difference if my dogs are going to be cooped up in a bedroom all day for nothing. - Switched tile installers after the 2nd bathroom without notifying me, or having me sign a consent form. They were very obviously not as good as the first installers, so quality of work went downhill for the master bathroom. We got crooked grout lines, level changes with each tile, a couple tilted tile pieces. - One of the tile installers from the second company thought it was okay to play my husband's guitar without asking. My husband walked into the house while he was playing with it. - We needed to point out many things to Robert that were not up to par with our standards, and should not have been up to par for them either. But his excuse was that "everybody's level of expectation is a little bit different. We aim to please all of our customers not just have one level of acceptance for installations". Sounds like they assume their customers aren't going to notice small things, and will wait for the customer to say something before fixing it. When they SHOULD use the highest quality of work for all their customers no matter what, and from the beginning. Some examples: - Light fixtures off-center; - Sinks leaking (twice); - Tub faucets loose; - Tile installation uneven in the master bathroom; - Paint lines crooked and some white spots on walls; - Outlet covers cut to fit when they should have moved the outlets up so the whole cover could fit around them; - Outlet covers cut crooked; - New glass installation had messy silicone. - They didn't clean after they were done. New tile floors were dirty, paint splatter all over the counter and sinks, goopy stuff around drains, shower tiles still had pencil marks on them from the install (large X's that wouldn't come off with an eraser, nail polish remover, or alcohol). Again, I had to specifically ask them to fix/clean. - I would have preferred someone who could offer suggestions on design choices since they have so much more experience than us instead of needing to figure everything out ourselves. I at least thought they would have a catalog for us to choose from, or a specific distributor they work with. But they just gave us a blank excel spreadsheet and told us to write down what we want them to order (whether it's from Amazon, Home Depot, etc.). Even when I asked what they thought between two products, they told me they would both look good. It seemed like they didn't want to get blamed for any bad choices. - When I gave them my filled out spreadsheet of materials, they ordered everything, including materials for the master bathroom. They didn't start the master bathroom until about 4 weeks after, because they were working on the 2 hall bathrooms. When it came time to work on the master, they realized there were issues with splitting up the light fixture into 2 light fixtures, so we decided to keep it as 1 long one. They texted me that the light fixtures ordered from Amazon were past the return date, so they couldn't return it, and they expected us to eat the cost. I told them no, and to contact Amazon's customer service because they are usually pretty good about accepting returns. They tried, and I was right. First of all, do your research before you tell the customer they're out of luck. Second of all, how was it my fault that they decided to order all the materials in the beginning? I didn't tell them to do that, and I didn't set their schedule. They knew they weren't going to get to our master until about a month later. That should have been on them, not us. In the end, it was fine since Amazon accepted the returns after they contacted customer service. read more

I have an almost hundred year old house with small closets and not enough bathrooms, so I wanted to create a master suite with a bathroom. J&J Quality incorporated everything I wanted into the plans and gave great suggestions to improve on my hazy idea of what the project could be.
