I was planning on painting my house so figured it would be good to insulate the walls from the outside before getting them fully painted. After emailing with them I was assured (more like mislead) that the patches done on the exterior walls would be very hard to see and I would be able to just paint them without having to re-patch even though their contract says they just do "rough patches" (email thread image attached). As you can see from the images, the patches were very poorly done and you could easily see the spot where it was patches (raised with a dimple in the middle), which lead me to require having my painters re-do the patches (at my own expense). J & L originally apologized when I told them about the miscommunication and showed them the emails, then they forgot to send me an invoice. A couple months later they re-sent the invoice and when I reminded them about the situation, they claimed 0 responsibility and completely denied any wrong-doing. ( I attached their response email as well) ***** If you feel comfortable working with a company that will throw you under the bus instead of admitting a mistake, then this is the company for you! ***** tl;dr Their contract explicitly states that their patches will be bad and you will need to have them redone, then when I asked about that part of the contract they explicitly told me the patches would not be visible. WEST WALL in our home was facing direct sun. Made the rooms very uncomfortable. Older home built in 1960. I checked into the local company in Lakeside and they came out quickly and assessed the situation. We were given a quote and the job was completed within about a week or less. Blown in insulation in the west facing wall. HUGE difference in the rooms on the west facing side. SO happy we spent the $$ to keep our home cool. Their estimator, Rob came to my home on Friday, June 26, 2015 at 10:30AM. We are doing a major remodel and I explained to Rob that the insulation job is holding up the HVAC, and electric work. Rob assured me that he would have the bid to me that same late afternoon. Here I am on Monday at 2:15, left 3 messages for Rob, no return calls. Spoke to the office gal at about noon and they don't know where their estimator is and they don't call me back. So I call them back and ask for the owner to call me. Are you kidding me?? These guys were beyond patient with me, made a couple mistakes.. came back to fix it and didnt charge me extra.. They had to come on 2 different occasions because the job required it as well. NO complaints.. and job exceeded my expectations. Not only that, I had another contractor screw something up.. and I asked them for some extra insulation.. and they brought it to me so I can fix the screw up my other contractor did! Here's what I wrote to my sales rep, Terry, upon completion of my 2100SF attic blow-in fiberglass job on July 22, 2019: "The team did a great job today. Jeff and his assistant were very professional, conscientious and polite. It was a pleasure having them do the work, which looks great. Thank you J&L and Terry. An all-around excellent experience working with you." Plus, J&L's price was better than competitive. Here's my rundown: My attic had some insulation, 6-8" with some low and some bare spots. I wanted to take the level to at least the recommended R38 to increase comfort and cut down on costs both summer and winter. J&L inspected on the same day I called, Wednesday before the long 4th of July, 2019 weekend. Terry checked my attic space, measured, and confirmed my choice of chopped blown-in fiberglass was a good one given the conditions in my fairly cramped attic. We would blow in R30 of additional material on top of existing insulation and fill in the low spots. Terry said it would be a day before I got the estimate; I told him to enjoy his weekend and get it to me Monday. The estimate showed up promptly on Monday, July 8. Other contractors I spoke with weren't even close to the price J&L offered. Based on their bids, I had been seriously considering doing the job myself. J&L's very reasonable bid meant I wouldn't have to climb into the attic. We scheduled the installation at a convenient time. Chad called on the Friday before the Monday installation to confirm. Jeff and his assistant showed up promptly as scheduled and did a thorough job. We took a look into the attic together; he was receptive to my remarks concerning a few details and covered all the bases perfectly. Jeff encouraged me to take a good look upon completion, which I did, and coverage was a clearly uniform, and depth of fill was confirmed by rulers that J&L had stapled at regular locations throughout the attic. Clean up was thorough. Wouldn't know they were in my attic at all, but for the cooler temperature in the house this afternoon. Everyone I spoke and worked with at J&L was very pleasant. I had j & l come in and install new blown-in cellulose in the attic and also blow it into existing exterior walls. Terry came by to provide the estimate and he was able to answer all of my questions throughout the process. The guys that came to do the work were really professional and courteous. This is not a clean process by any means. If you decide to blow your walls, be prepared for lots of dust. These guys covered everything and did the best they could to contain the dust. They just finished the job yesterday, but the difference in the comfort of my home is immediately noticeable. The walls are no longer cold and my heater ran only twice the entire night. Previously it would fire up once or twice and hour on a 40 degree night. I'm looking forward to seeing how my SDG&E bill is affected. As a bonus, noise from the exterior is dramatically less as well. Quote Estimator Lady came to house, was friendly and seemed knowledgeable. Stated they use tarps and plastic to keep the insulation removal and install contained, and from dirtying the walls and floors (which is not what actually happened). We wanted our insulation removed because we know we had a rat problem and lots of droppings. Estimator Lady said she didn't think we needed it removed but would quote it anyway. The quote was in-line with one other quote we received; our third quote was a specialty vendor and was $2k more. We choose to move forward with the removal and install of new insulation based on other's reviews of the company. Removal I was immediately put-off by the customer service of the removal team. I answered the door and Guy A asked if he could use the bathroom. Then a second guy asked to use the bathroom. There was no real introduction or discussion of how the job was going to work. I asked Guy A if he would be using tarps to protect the floor, he said they do but he forgot them. I said he could borrow mine. This was irritating because Estimator Lady said they use lots of tarps to protect the floor and walls from the hoses and to keep things clean. Then I asked Guy A about the plastic that goes around the attic entry, he said he's never used it before. Again, this was irritating because Estimator Lady said they put an ET type protector thing around the opening to keep everything clean. Third, Guy A asked if he could borrow our step ladder since he only had an 8 foot ladder, sure. At this point I was concerned the job was not going to go well. Later that day, Guy A asked to borrow our duct tape because he ran out. I called and left a message with the company's answering machine, voicing my concern. I did not get a call back from them regarding these issues. I knew there were rat droppings in the attic, and I am certain Estimator Lady did not warn the workers of this. I could here them gruffing and swearing in frustration in the attic about rat droppings, and how he's going to run out of bags. After the initial issues, I could hear them vacuuming and making progress. It seemed as if they were spending a good amount of time making sure everything was removed properly. Although in the end my husband would give them a B- for effort in the removal. They worked until about 2:30pm and did about ¾ the removal. Guy A said he needed to leave for the dump so they could get there by 4pm.He said they would be by in the morning to finish up and the install guys should take 1-2 hours. Later the Project Manager called and said they will finish the removal on Day 2, then spray the decontamination spray, let that sit over the weekend, then come back for Day 3 to blow-in. I asked, so you can't do it all tomorrow and he said he has two trucks one is already going one way and the other going the other way, then I started to say something, and he cut in...okay thanks bye (in not those words), but I felt cut off and it was weird. I called right back, got a voicemail box, and left a message to call me about Day 3. Project Manager called back and said he was having phone issues, but I still felt like I was being put-off. Install of new insulation Day 3 was a scheduling issue. At 6:50am Project Manager called, asked to confirm they are blowing-in R30 fiberglass, I said yes. This was irritating because I would assume the Project Manager should know what the job entails. Then he asked what time he said he would be there. I said 8, he said unfortunately he won't be able to get here until 11am. He had one job cancel, one job change, now has to do one before me, etc. I said so there is no way you can be here at 8, no. I had to re-arrange my work schedule to be there for the whole day instead of the half day as expected. They arrived about 11:30, set up plastic on floor and hoses, and did a quick look around house for vents and recessed lighting to make sure they insulated around these areas. Took about 2 hours, and they ended up being pretty clean inside, although I did sweep the garage and driveway of insulation when they were gone. My husband hasn't had a chance to crawl up in the attic to check out the install job. Final Thoughts They did an okay job for an expected price. Their customer service could be much better, an introduction when I open the door, and a description of how the process works is important. All materials and supplies should be provided by the contractor, and service should be provided as promised (keeping the house clean and protected). They could have been more detailed in the removal. As far as I can say, the insulation is working, which is expected. I would not recommend them to friends. You never know what you are going to get when you try new contractors despite all the reviews you read. read more

At least five contractors gave me a bid for the work that I needed done: about 1000 square feet of insulation under my floors, and one wall between living space and an unfloored crawl space. J&L's estimate was by far the most well-thought-out and understandable, and was a reasonable price compared to the ones that were much higher and much lower. Getting the estimate required two visits, and this was after it came to me that they or I may not have specified the work properly. After the second visit I was certain they and I could be happy with the bid. My work also required removal of insulation that had been improperly installed, and the installation of both blown-in and batt insulation. They got the work done on the schedule promised, and their staff were friendly and professional. The technicians did have to be asked to clean up after themselves more than they had done without asking, but they did that cheerfully and well. That points up how good an idea it is to be present before and during, as well as at the end of a job. read more
