Alright. This salon is so hit or miss. When it's a hit...it's a a hit. It slays even. But when it's a miss....your day feels well wasted. The stylist does not cut layers well, so please go somewhere else if you want layers. Coloring is good they try to get it as accurate to your picture as possible. I'm ngl the only reason why I still come here is 1. Local business and 2. They're the only place nearby that does Japanese hair straightening and they do that beautifully. Mind you now there's 2 people working, 3 if you count the daughter who washes and blow dries hair. So there's always a wait but I mean it's up to you if that's ok. Over all I'd say it's worth for Japanese hair straightening. Otherwise go somewhere else. read more

Where do I start with this awful place I guess I will start from the beginning I went online and I booked my appointment for a women haircut and it said it was 15$ so I thought that was a steal so I paid and booked it. Then I made sure to get there by 12 because my appointment was at 12 I got there at 11:55 and they confirmed I had a appointment I said yes and I paid 15$ online and I wanted to get a haircut and they said ok no problem and let me sit down. At 12:30 the one lady took me and washed my hair. Washing: no communication where I sit She sat me in a chair and said to me about a wash I said ok Then she washed my hair which hurt her nails were long and she was rough. Then she had me sit in the chair Haircut: The guy Alex ham came over I showed him the picture I wanted mind you my hair was to my collar bone area and I wanted a pixie cut he went on about how it was short very short so short after he complained about that he then cut my hair. While cutting my hair he was all over the place and talking to the other employee I just felt like he wasn't really paying attention. Once he was done he took the robe thing off and used the blow dryer to get the extra hair off but left a lot on my arms. He also cut it a bit shorter than I wanted on top but that isn't the end of the world. After I thought a 15$ haircut I gave him a 3$ tip and when I was walking out about to open the door he then said ma'am you didn't pay I said I did pay online he said how much I said 15$ and he said no for your services today it's 70$ before tax so he took the 15$ and deducted it and had me pay the 55$ extra and the tax It was horrible unprofessional and not clear at all and online it didn't even state details on it just a women's haircut is 15$ very misleading they need to be shut down. So either I get my money back or I will take the complaint further. Horrible service and place don't waste your money, they rip people off. read more

I went here for the Japanese hair straightening bc it hard to find places that do it on long island. Def was nervous bc I dont trust new places but let me tell you everyone was so nice & explained what they were going to do from beginning to end. They tested my hair before even starting & made few adjustments to guarantee my hair wouldnt break off. Very knowledgable staff. My hair looks & feels fantastic. Its not cheap but I will be coming back for maintenance. 100% recommend!!! read more

The straightening process caused me to lose a lot of hair -- and I have thick hair. I returned to get my ends cut. I asked for 1/2 an inch. An Asian lady cut 3 inches starting from the back so when it got to the front there was no option but to take that much off. I asked for a blunt BLUNT cut, repeating the word blunt every time. She used thinning scissors. Then charged me 50 dollars !!! This is not a place i will be returning to do ANYTHING, except getting my money back -- which i know will be very hard, because that is all they want here, to take your money. Hands down the best salon for Japanese hair straightening!! My son and I used to go to Hair Village in Queens and would leave with our hair not feeling or looking so healthy. J City has done an excellent job with both of our hair! His hair, done by Bity, came out so straight, shiny and healthy! Alex did my hair and recommended a protein conditioning treatment and cut off all of my unhealthy ends and I love how it feels and looks!! The vibe is so relaxing that my son and I fell asleep a few times. It doesn't look busy inside because they make the appointments personal so they take care of only you! And that's what we had. There was no switching from us to other customers which made the experience even better! We're definitely coming back! This is our new spot from now on and I definitely recommend this place! Before I had kids, my hair was pin straight. All I had to do was wash it and air dry. After having two curly haired kids, my hair changed. It was frizzy and wavy. How I longed to have my straight hair back. I had heard of the Japanese straightening treatment, so I started doing research. I read a lot of reviews of various salons that do Japanese hair straightening. I decided to go to J City's Hair, and I am so happy I did. Everyone there is extremely nice, and after three days, they did a keratin treatment on my hair as it was a bit dry after the straightining process, and it came out perfect. They made sure my hair was thoroughly moisturized and healthy. They have definitely gone above and beyond to make sure I was happy with the outcome of my hair!!! I will be going back to J City hair in June 2023 to have my roots touched up. There is the initial process, then every 6 months to touch up the roots. This June, I will have my 2nd touch-up. I will definitely keep coming back to maintain my hair. *Update to the above--March 2017--I went back to get my hair colored and it was decent job. It wasn't the shad I was looking for and I got a trim. They charged me $125 for both! By this time my cousins had gone to straighten here hair and she paid the full $300 and they told her that I would get $50 off my next visit because I referred her. When I asked the staff about this, they said they had no idea what I was talking about. **Update to the above--July 2017--I just called back trying to go in for my roots to be straightening and the last said it would cost me $250?! I paid that much to do the first treatment and she told me next for roots it would be much cheaper and no more than $100. This is ridiculous. I think I will have to find another place for roots. I even reminded her that I am a returning customer and she said it's still the same price. read more

I have been going here on and off for years now. Typically just went for hair cuts and blowouts. Alex had done a good cut.The last time I went was a disaster. I am a hairdresser myself so I know what I am talking about. I asked for a very basic haircut. 2 inches off and long layers with some angles in the front. The shampoo he gave hardly cleaned. Then once at the chair he said lets do 3 inches which was fine. He cut 6 inches and i have 2 different styles of haircut in my head. shorted on the bottom and long on the top. It is ridiculous. He also thinned out my ends way to much. I will never go back. They were very nice and that is the only reason they get 2 stars. read more

I am kind of new to J City. I have been getting my haircut there for about a year. First of all, the girl who answers the phone is kind of odd - when I booked my first appointment with J City, I requested Cindy (I am a male). The receptionist started laughing. I asked what was funny? She replied, " most men don't ask for Cindy, they ask for Alex " (or whatever the guy's name is). I found that to be really rude & uncalled for - just because I wanted a woman to cut my hair she starts laughing? Very odd. I have been going to female haircutters for about 25 years. Now to the haircut: Cindy does a nice job. However, they raised the price 20% -- after being a customer for about a year. I don't get a shampoo. I don't ask for product in my hair - just a haircut. So why the increase? The price of scissors go up? The price of brushes go up? Greedy business owners have no clue how to keep a steady customer. It's like a landlord: if you have a good tenant & want to keep that tenant, you don't raise the rent. At J City, they saw me as a steady customer & wanted to make a few extra bucks. I want to thank Biri for taking a nightmare appointment and turning it into a better experience. Andy, was supposed to cut my hair and give me a trim (as my hair is about 30 inches long) and long layers. I arrived on time excited based on the reviews. When I arrived Andy asked me if I would wait 20 minutes as he had another person who's hair he needed to cut. I explained I had another appointment at 6:30. I slotted an hour for my haircut knowing based on the length and thickness it would take a while. I need to emphasis at no point had he greeted me or told me his name. I took my hair down and he laughed and told me my hair was too long. I explained I'm growing it out because I plan on donating it, he laughed again and told me my hair was too long. He proceeded to give me a sloppy and quick cut, again I have 30+ inches of hair, my haircut was over in 9 minutes I kept track. Here is where Biri saved the day. She came over and began blowing out my hair, introduced herself and Andy, as he had not done so. She gave me excellent customer service and kept a nice conversation going with me. She also fixed it in places he had overlooked, since he had rushed. My hair was cut and blow dried in less than 30 minutes. He was still working on the haircut the woman next to me was getting, she had a short male like haircut but somehow took longer than mine. A haircut and style for my hair type and length is typically almost 45 minutes again he was done in 9. He had the decency to at least only charge me $35 realizing how unprofessional and rude he was. Andy do your business a favor and only sit behind the register let other people with customer service skills and talent be behind the chair. read more

Alex is the best hairstylist I have yet to meet, and the service is always spectacular. He cuts my hair swiftly and with such precision--he has even cut it dry. I am amazed every time. His lines are perfect. The wash is also fantastic. The girls give the most amazing head massages! When they press my meridian points, any stress just melts away. But, the best part has to be when 2+ people dry my hair while Alex snips and perfects the cut. It makes me feel like a model getting prepped for a photo shoot! And all for $35. I came here once and that was the very last time. I waited 45 mins to have a simple trim and blowout. there was one girl getting her hair curled and 2 people were working on her hair. Finally when it was my turn they washed my hair, then left me at the sink to take a 10 min call, so i sat myself in one of the styling chairs. A man came over and cut my hair, i told him i had an undercut and i was letting it grow out because i was over it and he said he understood, then he shaved that entire side of my head again, after i just told him i was letting it grow out. i repeat - HE SHAVED THE SIDE OF MY HEAD. My hair was about 5 inches long on this side and i would hide it by parting my hair on the other side and using extensions and he completely ruined my hair. After a different person came and dried my hair with a hair dryer. The woman dried half of my head and then left for another call for another 10 mins. then finally came back to see the other side of my head beginning to curl (as i have naturally curly hair) so she offered to straighten it for free. I thought, why not. So she begins straightening my hair then guess what... leaves for another call. At this point I'm disgusted and i wasn't to get the hell out of there! So i take the straightener and finished what she didn't. Then i went to pay and i was charged for a "free" straightening. i will never go back here, and whenever someone asks me "hows that salon dont the street?" i tell them my horrible experience. read more

I've driven by many times, and being new to the area, I finally called and asked about their services and went in for a cut and full highlight. All of the staff went above and beyond to help me. From washing, to highlighting, to cutting I was amazed at how particular they were to make sure everything they were doing was perfect. 3 people worked on me at once! All were so friendly and nice. This is by far the best cut/color I've ever had. All I did was say what length and color range I was looking for and trusted them to do rest. Glad I did! Alex is masterful with the scissors. He took so much time to explain to me different techniques he was using and how it would frame my face and take the weight out of areas of my hair. He made sure everything was perfect before I left the chair. My hair feels healthier and lighter and the high quality products they used on my hair are much appreciated. Best hair salon I've been to. The customer service goes beyond what you expect, they listen to what you want and do their best to make sure you leave the salon satisfied. I went in not really knowing what I wanted to do with my hair, but by the time we were done I was so happy! They take their time with you and I honestly felt so comfortable with them.
