We had JK Schwartz seal our concrete walkway and patio. They also added a dark "stain or dye" to bring out the stamped concrete beauty again. The walkway and patio look great and have a wonderful gloss-look. The only negative...they did the actual sealing when we weren't home and didn't leave any instructions on how long to wait before walking on it or how often we need to seal it. They also had no follow up after the job was done. I ended up looking the information up online. read more

The work itself was very good. Scheduling is an issue, 2 hours late and no call to explain why. When I called they simply replied someone else wanted to go first because they had to go to work. I guess they didn't consider my schedule so I ended up cancelling my medical appointment that I ended up paying for because I canceled the same day. I didn't have enough time to get there. After speaking to a good friend, she explained the same thing happened to her. It took three months for them to get to her after she gave a deposit. But again, the quality of the work was very good, thus the 4 stars. read more

My wife and I purchased an amazing house with 3+ acres of awesome property near Chestnut Ridge in the Town of Orchard Park a few years ago that came with a massive 30+ year old wood deck. The deck measures 39' x 26' and was in sad shape. It was stained with a solid stain to match the "chocolate brown" trim/gutters of our house but years of neglect left it peeling & chipping badly. Was quoted a price to replace with a vinyl deck of over $30k!!! Received a second estimate to replace the weathered worn out pressure treated decking with new wood and THAT would have cost us over $15k. After researching the time, cost, methods, etc. of resurfacing the deck myself (WAY more work than I'm willing to do) I stumbled on J.K. Schwartz's "deck rehabilitation" website. Long story short, they advised me they couldn't put anything on top of the existing surface other than another solid stain. After pressure washing & sanding all of the loose old ugly "chocolate brown" stain from the deck surfaces, they applied no less than 3 coats of a gorgeous solid stain (SHERWIN-WILLIAMS Super-deck "Ember" - resembles a light cedar color) and the transformation was indescribable! We added some railings and post sleeves ourselves but the total results were amazing and LITERALLY, at about 1/10 the price of our other estimates! Jim (Sr. AND Jr.) and crew were awesome, answered all of our questions, didn't pull any punches of what to expect/not expect so we pushed forward completely informed of what the finished product should look like and it was above-and-beyond our expectations! If you're considering doing ANY deck rehab, before doing a partial/full reconstruction (by the way, they DO provide reconstruction services if required), go to J.K. Schwartz to see ALL your options. In the summer of 2021 I had a peeling wood deck. After contacting Jim and having him out for an estimate he explained that the peeling was due to improper application of stain. He went on to explain that the only resolution was to sand down the entire deck and reapply the stain. Jim stated he had been in business for decades and that this type of project was his specialty. He explained that moving forward I would need to clean the deck twice a year (once in spring and once in Fall) and that the stain would be good for at least 5+ years before I would need to reapply. He stated that he only uses the best products (Sherwin Williams) and that rest assured this would once and for all solve my problems. The work was done and I paid thousands of dollars in the summer of 2021. In the Spring of 2022 I noticed that my deck was peeling in several locations and I contacted Jim. Jim came out and explained that the products these days don't work like they used to and that this is typical. This was a far cry to how it was explained to me before contracting the work. Jim said he would come out when the weather was better and address the spots that were peeling. Jim sent a couple of guys out in early July but I must have missed a call so that I was not prepared for the work to be completed so we had to reschedule. I must have called Jim a dozen times between the Spring and finally on 7/20/22 he sent someone out to address the problem areas. I had to remove all items from my deck and clean it for him in advance which was not an issue. Whoever came out dabbed a bit of stain on approximately half the areas and left. Now I have half the problem I had and fear that this will happen again as no sanding was done. I am now on my way to Sherwin Williams to buy stain and re-stain my deck myself. I could not be more disappointed with this company and how they do not stand behind their work. I would be highly skeptical and extremely cautious before hiring this company. read more

I think the owner is a good guy, but his attempt to lie about contacting us and needing access to the garage is rediculous. If anything his response 2-3 years after I put the original review up should tell potential customers how he operates. In case anyone wants to know their work was very good except for the wet boards they put down and stained. Honestly if they had just came an fixed them or even attempted to I would have deleted the review or changed it to a 4-5 star. Price was fair and they didn't trample anything. FYI we have cameras all around the house, and at no time did anyone even pull into the driveway, or drive by or call for that matter. He should learn to take constructive criticism more often as this is the third review I've seen addressing this exact same scenario "does a great job but doesn't finish". read more

We hired this contractor to replace two boards on our deck and to then power wash, sand and stain the deck. Work was delayed for several weeks because of weather - I don't blame them for that. Work was eventually completed while we were away on vacation and we had our son pay them, which was our mistake. When we returned from vacation and inspected the work we found that two of the boards on the deck were damaged - it appeared to us that a prybar had been used to remove the boards that were to be replaced, damaging the adjoining boards. Also, a corner of one of the boards that had been replaced was not flush with the rest of the deck, creating a tripping hazard. We didn't even ask the contractor to replace the damaged boards - we only asked if there was some way to sand down the damage so people wouldn't get splinters when walking over the deck. The contractor refused to even come out and look at the damage and took the position that his people would never use a prybar to remove the boards. He said that he would send someone out to fix the one board that was sticking up, but to date that has not been done. Paid over $1500 for a pretty small deck, and we are definitely dissatisfied with the work and the customer service. The staining is just OK, but not worth what we paid. I recommend that you do not use this contractor under any circumstances, but if you do, I recommend that you do not pay them until you thoroughly inspect the finished work and are completely satisfied with it. UPDATE/This is in response to the contractor's recent post: It is accurate that the contractor has consistently denied using a crowbar to remove the damaged boards. I was very careful to write in my initial post that "it appeared to us" that a prybar had been used, because the damage to the boards was consistent with that. We have no idea how the boards were actually removed because we were not home when the removal occurred. What we do know is that the boards were not damaged before the contractor did the work and that they were damaged after the work was completed. With regard to whether or not the contractor came out to look at the damage to the deck, all we can say is that we notified the contractor of the damage by email at 7:03 pm on 8/3 and the contractor replied by email at 10:15 pm on 8/3 that the damage was not their responsibility. If the contractor inspected the deck during that three hour interval, it is news to us, as we were home the whole time. The contractor may have looked at the deck at a later date, but never informed us that he had done so - the first that we knew about his alleged inspection of the deck was when we read his post. To be clear, the contractor has been consistent in saying that since his workers use a cats paw and not a crowbar, they couldn't have caused the damage to the deck. With regard to the need to install more boards against the joist to fix the board sticking up (which is a different problem than the damage to the deck), the first time we were made aware of this need was when we read the contractor's post. Had we been aware of this at the beginning of the job, we certainly would have agreed to it. Why would we agree to pay $1500 and not pay an extra $90 so the job could be done right? The contractor says that he wants to avoid any hard feelings, but he twice called my wife a liar in his post (and called her a pathetic liar in a separate email to her), which is an interesting way to try to avoid hard feelings. He says that his offer to fix the board sticking up still stands, but to date he has made no offer to us. Originally he indicated that he would send somebody over the fix the problem, and only now is he saying that more work needs to be done for an additional fee (and we don't know if the additional fee is $90 or some other amount, because no offer was ever communicated to us). The bottom line is that we now do have hard feelings, and we have no desire to have this contractor back on our property under any circumstances. While we fully expect that the contractor will respond to this update, we will not respond any further, so please don't take the lack of any further response as any acquiescence by us to any of the contractor's allegations. read more

This is the main reason why we do not acknowledge Yelp. A complaint that generated 4 years ago keeps generating. As much as this customer thinks needing access to his garage is rediculous, it is what occurred. We I am not going to argue with this customer. We left him messages on his voice mail. We have been in business for over 30 years, we have an A+ rating with the BBB and we have always had an A+ rating. We have over 5000 satisfied customers and we restore over 350 decks and fences each year. We are currently one of the biggest deck and restoration companies in Western NY and the Southern Tier. We dropped out of Yelp because they have continuously generated the same complaint over and over again. They have a F rating with the BBB and we dont do business with companies like this. As for this customers complaint that was generated 4 years ago, I will not comment on this issue again any longer. We will let our A+ ratings, our satisfied customers and our years of experience speak for its self. read more

I recieved a quote to sand and stain my deck. Approximately 1000 square feet of pressure treated lumber that I had prepped for them with a pressure washer. Prepped to their specs. The quote process and promise of quality work went well. A crew of 4 young men sanded for less than one hour, called it finished and packed up. They mentioned they were in a hurry to get to the next job. When I questioned the quality; swirl mark's, total areas missed, didn't even move the table, I was told that I didn't know what I was talking about. I will look for a way to add pictures. When I emphasized that I had expected better quality workmanship, I was told that this is how they do it. They were very disrespectful, trampled the gardens around the deck and were constantly fighting among themselves. Even trying to talk to the owner was a difficult task. He agreed that he could not do the quality work that he promised and chose not to finish. If you want a quick job done, they are probably capable, but if you take pride in your property and want something nice, I would look elsewhere. The single tone color was agreed on before they started and was no longer an issue. There was no cussing or abusive language as described below unless pointing out the areas that they missed or did poorly is abusive. In fact, they would barely let me speak because they are the "professionals" and "I don't know what I am talking about". I have done this work in the past and it is not that difficult. I also own the home and was paying for the work. I was trying to be constructive. The intent was not to insult, but to get it right before the stain went down. Maybe they have gotten through 30 years like this. It isn't all bad, it is better than nothing. It just isn't good or up to the quality workmanship that I was led to believe I paid for. read more

Called JK Schwartz to have them stain my deck in the house I just moved into. The deck was a complete mess and they made it look brand new. Price was great and I felt more confident that they were insured. Their crew was very respectful and made sure they walked me through everything they would do. I got an appointment time (between 4-5 pm) on a Monday for an estimate. They called that day to confirm. When they did not show by 5 there were telephone calls. I cannot remember now who initiated, I think it was me, but they did call me at least once. In any case, I was told that the job they were working on went overtime. That's understandable, but when they hadn't showed by 7 pm. I told them not to come that day. They said they'd call to reschedule but never did. Not happy. read more
