Had a terrific shop experience visiting last month. I was helped by Evan and Evan to find a new mouthpiece. I'm not a gearhead and go by what feels right. They kept bringing me variations on a Greg Black mouthpiece until I found a combo that I didn't want to stop playing. This mouthpiece makes me enjoy playing even more! My son returned an instrument and was told it would be a full refund if returned within 7 days. He used it for 2 days and didn't like the sound and decided to return it. The store charged egregious charge of 10% f the trumpet for a "restocking fee" and a t-shirt that was supposdely free when he purchased the horn. Total money grab in my opinion and should be forthcoming when purchasing of this fee. read more

The last time I was at J. Landress Brass I was told that extensive work needed to be done on my horn, which was not true - I know this because I ended up going to another place in Queens where they were honest and fixed the issue for a fraction of the cost. A similar thing happened to a pit musician friend of mine who went there as well. When Josh started out on his own he was great but now he has these ripoff people there, it's a shame. I strongly urge anyone who is thinking of using their services to find another option. read more

Fantastic service. I live in Hawaii, and have purchased two horns from Josh. I have also asked (via email) a bunch of questions, and always get prompt, considerate responses. The gents at J. Landress are just the BEST. They helped me sell two horns that were precious to me. I know little about instruments (I laughed at myself when I first put on the Gig bag for the large horn - upside down!!). A gorgeous silver Besson Euphonium and a Conn 88H Trombone, both professional-grade. They belonged to a really fine musician who can no longer play them. Folks at J.L. were more than helpful - even offering to ship an extra case that I gave to the family who purchased the Euphonium, no cost to me. Just kind and patient, and they work hard. The Conn took awhile, but they did really well. The Euphonium was more specialized, yet it went to the perfect new owner. THANKS to everyone who put up with me! Bought online a Bach strad with a 1969 reconditioned valve block and modern 190 37 bell that Mr. Landress crafted together. Plays wonderfully compared with modern 190 37 and vintage Bach horns. I have been coming here for about 7 years, and it's been a really special experience to watch this shop grow from a small one-man operation into the New York staple it is today. I've taken my horns to Josh for everything you can possibly imagine: dropping them on the ground (not recommended), screw bell conversions, dozens of cleanings, dent work, appraisals, valve work, lead pipe swaps, and countless other repair jobs. In addition, the shop has a wide variety of cleaning supplies, oil, and instruments for sale. Josh also has a killer collection of historical equipment--his trumpets from Miles and Dizzy come to mind. His guys are also all world class technicians in their own right. I tour and travel fairly frequently, and I am at a point where I'll almost always wait to take my horn into Landress back in NY, rather than risk taking it to someone unfamiliar on the road. There aren't many businesses that inspire my lifetime loyalty, but this is certainly one of them! read more

Why???? Why did it take me so long to find this guy after all these years of getting costly repairs done at Sam Ash? I can't agree more with all the reviews posted here. Josh and his staff are true masters! They are also friendly and non-judgmental. I took my super cheapo French horn in for some repairs after I dropped it foolishly. They told me that the cost of the repairs will likely be more than the value of the horn. I appreciated their honesty yet I went ahead with the repairs. The quote they gave was precisely the amount I was asked to pay upon pickup. I was surprised how little it costed because I was ready to pay much more. Anyway, this is all to say, take your horns to J. Landress and don't think twice about it! read more
