Fantastic balayage, I recommend Alphi!! He did a fantastic job. They gave me a water bottle and we chatted. The salon wasn't too busy and he worked on me and another client simultaneously who I also chatted with. Great work on the hair and very kind people.

Meghan S.

main focus was to blend my brown roots w my blonde cus I have to wear it up for work and it needs to be presentable (not grown out). I also asked for a lighter tone of blonde. Alphi said he didn't want to damage my hair by adding more bleach so I told him "of course, just do what you need to keep it healthy, just blend the top" but then he applied more bleach on my already bleached hair and I was so nervous the entire apt but based on photos of his work I trusted the process. Arrived w very long hair and barely any fly aways/breakage towards the roots (minus some frizz towards the ends ofc) and left w 3+ inches taken off and tons of damage all over. the roots are so splotchy which is the one thing I mainly cared about. $570 later and so upset. I wish I never got my hair done. When I left the salon it looked decent, but it's actually a wreck and looks so cheap. I can't even style it cus it's so damaged.

partial highlights

My hair came out just the way I wanted, and the stylist helped guide me where to put the highlights for the best look. Absolutely would come back.

I went to see Alphi based on the before and after pictures with their previous customers. But a total scam! My experience was terrible. I was seated and waited with a bunch of foils on my hair while he took care of two other customers, like my business was not important. He mixed bleach and foil then after two hours and 40mins washed my hair and left me seated while he was working on someone else. Then, from nowhere, he grabbed a toner and made the mix, applied it, and left me again for another 40 minutes. I was there from 2:30pm until 7pm. Then drying and oil for another 30 minutes. All that for $375 plus my parking $18. ** I didn't get a tip out, root melt(he said it's extra charge), and other places are included, bonding treatment. ONLY bleach and a half of toner from his backpack. I went for a balayage, but I got stripes.

Work completed

Big shoutout to Alphi for working magic on my hair! He nailed the natural color I was after, and the results are fantastic. What sets Alphi apart is his ability to create the most natural-looking color treatments. He took my vision to heart and worked magic with my hair, leaving it looking effortlessly beautiful. The attention to detail and passion for his craft truly shine through. Beyond the technical expertise, he has a unique talent for creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere. He listens attentively, offers valuable insights, and makes every visit enjoyable. Thank you for having such a remarkable talent in the salon.

Lovely decor at the salon and my new hair

I got my hair done for the first time at Jlavish by Alphi. 5/5 would recommend. I did a full highlight, trim and blowout. The price was pretty good too. For starters, I am not a person who loves salons because I can be nervous letting someone change my hair and tired during the process. I've only had my hair done a few times over the years because of this. Alphi made the process as painless as possible taking great care and attention during the whole process. He explained everything and made sure I left with the style I liked and a color that looked good. I went for a full highlight, trim and blowout. I had a 7+ month grow out and he was able to match it brillianly and get a more icy tone for winter that I requested. The salon itself was small and intimate with 6ish hair chairs, of which only 2-3 were in use at the time. In DC our mask mandate has been lifted so people were not required to be masked during services which was fine and comfortable to me as I am vaccinated and only a few people were there. Half the salon is for nails as well. It was easy to make an appointment online and they had Sunday appointments which is what I needed and hard to find in the area. Parking in Dupont Circle is not easy but very metro accessible or come early to find parking.

I had full highlights, a cut, and blow dry done by Alphi and I feel fabulous! I highly recommend J. Lavish and Alphi to anyone and everyone. The space is bright with natural light, it's clean and comfortable, and Alphi performed his magic in under 3 hours.

Ashy blonde highlights

Alphi is amazing!! He has done my boyfriend and I's hair since I moved to DC 3 years ago and he always knows what I want without me having to go into much detail. Getting my hair done used to make me super nervous because I've had a lot of bad experiences with bleach/highlights but my hair has gotten much healthier AND more beautiful blonde since I've started going here. I trust Alphi 100% with my hair. He is the only hairdresser I've had that has been able to give me that amazing ashy blonde look as well. Here is a shot of hair he did for me for attending a wedding (I got busy with work and wasn't able to come in for a while so my hair was very much in disarray). Alphi is a pro. Blonde approved!!

Marble acrylics with blue foil

If you're looking for artists that can do TRENDY NAILS AND HAIR!! Look no further!! I cannot express enough how amazing this salon is!! I found this place back in April through yelp when I was looking for decently priced haircuts that included wash/some type of styling. Alfie did amazing with my hair! I asked for long layers and shorter layers towards the front. Will def be coming back for any future cuts or color changes!! Ive attached photos of the cut as well! My favorite service though is DEFINITELY NAILS! I've been getting acrylics for the past 5 years, and I had yet to find someone who could do all the cool designs I found on pinterest/tiktok, ESPECIALLY IN DC!! They have a HUGE collection of nail stickers and the nail artists are super skilled. I've told over 5 friends to come here and they've all loved it as well. Again, I cannot emphasize enough how great this place is!! Its super busy on weekends, so I do recommend coming on weekdays and booking online!

Before (w alphie)

I want to say that before this, I've only been two two stylists my entire life. One that completely ruined my hair and one that had to fix it. I've been going to that second person for six years because I didn't trust anyone to touch my hair after that. But that was when I was in LA. I moved to DC recently and I did a ton of research before choosing a salon that I wanted to go to. I saw that Alfi was a blonde specialist and I loved his work that I saw online. When I got there, he greeted me with the warmest hello and did wonders on my hair! Not only was he great to chat with, he did an AMAZING job on my hair! It had been about 6 months since I got a deep brown gloss and 10 months since I last colored it. Just take a look at the before and afters. He was extremely knowledgeable and listened to everything I wanted. :) 10/10 recommend seeing Alfi!! You won't be disappointed.

I also understand why my appointment needed to be rescheduled. My issue is not with the policy, it's with how I was treated. I was made to feel like an inconvenience from the moment I walked into the salon. I had a 12:45 p.m. appointment and called before leaving home to let the salon know I was running about 10 minutes late, which is their stated grace period. The receptionist told me she would let Sera know. At 12:56 p.m., when I was literally one minute away from the salon, I received a call saying Sera could no longer see me because I was late, and she had back-to-back clients. While I was disappointed, I understood. I asked if I could still come in briefly to speak with Sera because I wasn't even sure I needed a full highlight service, and the receptionist agreed. When I arrived, Sera immediately told me I needed to reschedule and seemed unwilling to discuss my hair beyond commenting that the back was "really dark" and explaining that she had returning clients scheduled after me. She didn't seem to know or care that I was a returning client. Sera had done my hair in February, and I came back because I had really liked her work. Not recognizing me in and of itself is not a big problem--I know a lot of people sit in her chair--but it made the interaction feel impersonal and left me wondering if she'd even prepared for my appointment. I was fully prepared to work with Sera and the receptionist to find another date and time that fit both of our schedules. Instead, both were unhelpful, dismissive, and rude. This experience was especially difficult because I have pretty severe alopecia areata that, thankfully, is now well controlled with medication, allowing me to grow most of my hair back. That said, I wore a wig for five years after losing most of my hair, so finding a stylist I trust is still an incredibly vulnerable and anxiety-producing experience. Every time I see someone new, I have to explain my hair loss and why I prefer a lived-in color that doesn't require overly frequent trips to the salon. I chose to return to Sera because I thought I had found someone I could continue seeing. Instead, I left feeling embarrassed, dismissed, and genuinely upset. I walked out of the salon, called my husband, and cried like a reprimanded little girl. I am a 35-year-old grown-ass woman. Policies are important, and I respect them. Kindness and professionalism are just as important. Had the situation been handled with empathy and respect, I would have happily rescheduled. Instead, I left feeling less like a person and more like a time slot or a dollar sign. It seems like Sera may have enough clients that turning one away isn't a big deal, but I was respectful, cooperative, and ready to work with her to find another appointment. I deserved that same courtesy and respect in return.

Over the past five years, I have regularly visited Japanese hair salons in Los Angeles, New York City, and Boston while traveling frequently. In those experiences, even when a haircut did not fully match my preferred style or length, the technical quality was consistently strong, and any adjustments were handled professionally. Unfortunately, this experience was very different. One of the defining characteristics of a Japanese haircut is the smoothness, softness, precision, and careful organization of the layers. In my case, the cut lacked those qualities and appeared uneven and poorly structured (the photo from the back). I was also disappointed by the salon's management. Based on my experience, the overall operation and quality control did not reflect the standards typically associated with Japanese salons. Update (May 2026): Over the past 4 years, I have been with my Japanese hair stylist in New York. I returned to the salon to see Keiko because I was hoping to find a long-term stylist in Washington, DC. I had not had my haircut for 7 months prior to that because I delivered a baby in December 2025. Ozuki appeared to be one of the few salons in the area offering Japanese hairstylists. Immediately after the appointment, the haircut looked good due to the styling and blow-dry. However, within a few days, the shape became difficult to manage and appeared increasingly unstructured. The photo on my ID, taken approximately three weeks after the haircut, reflects how the cut settled over time. In contrast, the Japanese haircuts I have received elsewhere typically maintain their shape and balance for several months. Despite my concerns, I scheduled another appointment six weeks after the first haircut with Keiko because I genuinely hoped the issues could be corrected and that I could establish a relationship with a local stylist. At the same time, I let the management know that my haircut had bad form and hope that it can be resolved at the second appointment. Unfortunately, my interactions with management, Liz, were once again disappointing. Rather than addressing the concerns constructively, the response left me with little confidence that the salon could deliver the level of quality I was seeking. This is the first Japanese salon where I have repeatedly had unsatisfactory experiences. Based on the consistency of those experiences, I am not convinced that the salon operates at the standard typically associated with Japanese hairstyling.

I still believe a full refund would've been the right thing to do, but you pick your battles. I appreciate the attempt to make this right although it still seems somewhat half-hearted. 4/27/18 Please look up "Zhen Lin" on yelp to see my review of the stylist who did my hair and more pics of the highlights she gave me. There was obviously a major misunderstanding. Why on earth anyone would want super blonde highlights on top of dark brown hair in 2018 is beyond me. This is not at all what I asked for. I asked for a natural looking balayage and showed Zhen literally four different pictures of examples I liked. I expressed that I really wanted the hair to look natural, blended and not ombre'd or striped. Both Zhen and the manager refused to try to make it right when I expressed my disappointment in my hair. Neither offering to help fix it, nor a refund. I had to pay $250 for something that was the opposite of what I wanted. After begging in person for them to help, I left another pleading phone message tonight for them to help me fix this mess, or refund my money as I can only imagine what a color correction will cost at another salon. I absolutely hate writing bad reviews about people and wouldn't have posted this if I didn't feel completely swindled, disrespected and brushed aside. I'm really hoping they'll get back to me, and I'll update this review if they decide to do the right thing. In the meantime, I'm beyond disappointed and disgusted!
