This review is for Sera. I completely understand that a stylist's time is valuable, and I know it's frustrating when clients are late. I also understand why my appointment needed to be rescheduled. My issue is not with the policy, it's with how I was treated. I was made to feel like an inconvenience from the moment I walked into the salon. I had a 12:45 p.m. appointment and called before leaving home to let the salon know I was running about 10 minutes late, which is their stated grace period. The receptionist told me she would let Sera know. At 12:56 p.m., when I was literally one minute away from the salon, I received a call saying Sera could no longer see me because I was late, and she had back-to-back clients. While I was disappointed, I understood. I asked if I could still come in briefly to speak with Sera because I wasn't even sure I needed a full highlight service, and the receptionist agreed. When I arrived, Sera immediately told me I needed to reschedule and seemed unwilling to discuss my hair beyond commenting that the back was "really dark" and explaining that she had returning clients scheduled after me. She didn't seem to know or care that I was a returning client. Sera had done my hair in February, and I came back because I had really liked her work. Not recognizing me in and of itself is not a big problem--I know a lot of people sit in her chair--but it made the interaction feel impersonal and left me wondering if she'd even prepared for my appointment. I was fully prepared to work with Sera and the receptionist to find another date and time that fit both of our schedules. Instead, both were unhelpful, dismissive, and rude. This experience was especially difficult because I have pretty severe alopecia areata that, thankfully, is now well controlled with medication, allowing me to grow most of my hair back. That said, I wore a wig for five years after losing most of my hair, so finding a stylist I trust is still an incredibly vulnerable and anxiety-producing experience. Every time I see someone new, I have to explain my hair loss and why I prefer a lived-in color that doesn't require overly frequent trips to the salon. I chose to return to Sera because I thought I had found someone I could continue seeing. Instead, I left feeling embarrassed, dismissed, and genuinely upset. I walked out of the salon, called my husband, and cried like a reprimanded little girl. I am a 35-year-old grown-ass woman. Policies are important, and I respect them. Kindness and professionalism are just as important. Had the situation been handled with empathy and respect, I would have happily rescheduled. Instead, I left feeling less like a person and more like a time slot or a dollar sign. It seems like Sera may have enough clients that turning one away isn't a big deal, but I was respectful, cooperative, and ready to work with her to find another appointment. I had such a horrible traumatizing experience at this salon. I came in with two pictures a copper and a blond. Sera wanted me to Pick my own color out of the book and I told her I had no idea what i needed to make it look like the picture. She finished my hair and it wasn't copper at all, it looked brunette still and she said it was $600 dollars for that mess. The worst part is how incredibly disrespectful she is and how rude she is towards her boss and staff. At some point she was so angry, I thought she was going to physically assault me. The owner of the hair salon had to take the blow drier and comb out of her hand and tell her to walk away. My hair looks horrible, they did some shampoo and it is a hideous red instead of the nice copper I wanted. Worst experience ever. read more

I came in with significant concerns about the health of my hair. About a year ago, another salon over-bleached it, causing severe breakage, hair loss, and damage that took months to recover from. Because of that experience, I was very clear during my consultation about wanting a conservative approach and a specific vanilla blonde shade that would blend naturally with my gray hair. I showed photos of exactly what I wanted and explained my concerns in detail. The stylist assured me he understood. However, when the color was finished, my hair was orange instead of the vanilla blonde we had discussed. Considering this salon promotes itself as a place that specializes in correcting orange and brassy tones, I was shocked by the result. When I expressed my disappointment, I was told I could leave without paying. The owner then became involved. Rather than listening to my concerns, I felt rushed and interrupted while trying to explain why I was upset. Eventually, he convinced me to allow a corrective process. My biggest concern was having to bleach my hair again on the same day, especially given its history of damage. During the correction, my scalp became irritated and started burning. I informed the staff who was washing my hair. After the correction was completed, I was still not satisfied with the final result. I remained concerned about the long-term color outcome and the additional damage caused by two chemical processes in one visit. I also left with an irritated, itchy scalp that continued afterward. Despite my dissatisfaction, I was charged $180. I understand that mistakes happen. What matters is how they are handled. In my case, I did not feel heard, and I left with damaged trust, scalp irritation, and a result that did not meet the expectations discussed during the consultation. Based on my experience, I would not return or recommend this salon. read more

I normally have long hair (around lower waist), but once or twice every decade or so, I like to chop off several inches. I decided to do that since the summer is hot and Jeff (owner) was so awesome to cut off about 9 inches. I kept it just shy of shoulder with some pieces to frame my face. He was very polite and wanted to make sure I was happy with the cut and volume. I got sparkling water while he was cutting my hair (after a lovely wash), so I felt fancy. My cut was Korean inspired and I enjoy the current length where I can pull it back or keep it down if I chose to do so. I've been getting loads of compliments like "chic" and "cute". So extremely happy with Jeff and making sure his customers leave satisfied. He also didn't try to upsell anything. He advised me to wait for a few months for my hair to grow out before I try to get a dye consultation. Jeff emphasises consultations to make sure you know what you're getting into and he really seems to take his customer satisfaction extremely seriously, more so than other service providers I've seen. Anyways, while I'll always be a long-hair girlie, it's nice to have a short cut once in a while and I'll trust Jeff with my hair as long as I'm in DC. read more

I had an incredible balayage experience at Last Tangle with Kim! Last Tangle was right off the metro, which was convenient for me. I was welcomed by being offered a selection of drinks and Hershey Kisses. Kim came over and walked me to her chair. She started out by asking me what my desired outcome was, and said my hair was too dark to reach that light of a color. She set the expectation that she didn't want to damage my already damaged hair. Kim handled my hair with so much care. Her skill and expertise were evident throughout the 4-hour process. She worked meticulously to not only reach the color that I had expected, she over delivered and gave me the color I wanted because my hair "lifted" faster than she had thought! She also used a premium conditioner to revive and restore my damaged hair. I enjoyed my head massage too during the hair wash portion. Not only is Kim talented, but she also made the entire experience enjoyable with her warm personality and her telling me about her story of how she came to be. My first time in the salon and Jeff did an amazing job! I asked for partial highlights with no cut or styling. I told him I wanted something low maintenance because I only do it every 8 months to a year - so Jeff gave me a balayage without charging extra. He highlighted it very close to the root and says it will last months (he said I might not need to come back until next summer!) That was perfect for me because some stylists/colorists pressure you to come back super often or get a cut. I asked for a warm-toned honey blonde and I think that's exactly how it turned out.
