Do not come for haircut. This is simply a place to beautify your face and hairdo for your special day or to color your hair but don't come here for a haircut. Except for French woman named Sophie who can do decent cuts, there is no any other stylists skilled in precision haircuts. Came here and one of their top stylists gave me the worse cut I've ever had in my life. I've had to wait more than 6 months to grow my hair out from the horrible layers he did on me. He literally just chopped my hair up. The bottom of my hair in the back was an upside down triangle! Every stylist knows it should be straight across and maybe just a bit rounded on the sides! Any salon would have easily provided a (normal) soft, feminine, sexy, natural cut that is subtle perhaps at different skill levels. This guy clearly had no concept of how to cut (straight) hair because his clueless messes get disguised easily in wavy or curly hair or in a blow dry with curling brush. read more

UPDATE: Jillian threatened me with legal action for writing this review. After being a loyal client of Jillian for hair cuts and Adrian for brow waxing since at least 2016 until 2018, before I moved back to San Francisco and to Plano, Texas, I returned to NoVA/DC - moving on election day in Nov 2020 - because it seemed like NoVA/DC was being pragmatic about covid-19 regulations vs. the two extremes in CA & TX. I messaged with Jillian prior to my move on 11/3/2020 to learn how Karma was handling covid-19 regulations, because there were no capacity restrictions in Texas, so I hadn't had my hair cut or colored for 7-months - the longest I've ever gone. I saw her and Adrian on 11/22/2020, and even brought them both "welcome home" rose gold goodie bags with cards, Sugarfina rose gummies & chocolate caramels, and masks. I knew the global pandemic was especially hard on the beauty industry, because my aesthetician in San Francisco & her mom had to close 2 of their 3 salons in the Bay Area - in spite of being open since the 1970s. I was therefore sensitive to this fact. Which is why it was even more bizarre when I learned on social media in December 2020 that Jillian was moving to Dallas, Texas in January 2021, after she listened to my stories about Texas and pumped me for specifics about salons there, and at no point told me about her move. I later learned she told some clients about her move and not others, and that she expected Karma to tell me about it. However, the poor communication continued, given Karma never emailed me, the same way I never receive receipts for my "contact-less" transactions, and they still ask for my physical credit card, in spite of verifying its existence on file. The poor communication and the broken technology are both annoying. I let that go, and worked with Jillian - via social media - to book hair cut appointments with her for the next 6 months on Saturdays, however even when we agreed on my preferred time slot (4pm), she booked them for 5pm, because that worked best for her, she said. Not very friendly customer service for loyal clients! She also initially told the receptionist she was booked in February, which initiated our social media messages, requiring me to book with her directly. Then magically she's staying late for me! In parallel, as to the quality of Jillian's cuts, I started seeing her when she used to place a placemat on my shoulders to ensure her cuts were even, and I was always happy with how even they were over the years. That said, I've been very clear - including bringing drawings and instructions from my stylists in San Francisco, who do editorial work for Nordstrom & Gap, and trained in London & globally - that I don't like "shelves" of layers in my hair, I prefer long layers, I don't like corners, and I prefer professional cutting techniques to remove weight vs. thinning shears that butcher the ends of my hair without expertise. Jillian uses thinning shears, and my last cut included all the things I don't want mentioned above. It was, however, even at the bottom. I let this go, because I've had uneven cuts in DC, and I knew that by August 2021, I would need to find a new stylist anyway. I did, however, vocalize my concerns to Jillian yesterday & today about the inaccuracy of rapid covid tests, in parallel with Texas removing their mask mandate, while she travels back & forth between a covid hotspot & DC over the coming months, and she decided to cancel my appointments as a result. That's fine. I'd rather not contract covid, which is exactly why I left Texas. Which brings me to the brow waxes. Due to schedule availability, I booked an eyebrow wax with Erwin in December 2020, and his brow waxes are better - and more expensive - than Adrian's. Erwin's shape was superb, and similar to my favorite brow artist in San Francisco, who's regularly voted best brows. However, Erwin did not pluck or wax the hairs in between my brows, which I had to do myself. He also told me the gold dab of eye shadow I placed in the center corners of my eyes made me look cross-eyed, which I found insulting, so I suggested he remove it if he found it distracting. He asked me who gave me that make-up guidance, and "if they were black". Was that a racist comment? And why was he criticizing me, his paying client?!? I tried booking a brow wax in January 2021 with either Erwin or Adrian, and learned they were both at home quarantining with covid. Surprisingly, when I saw Adrian in February 2021, he criticized my brows, saying how much they needed a wax. Obvi! Why do he and Erwin feel it's OK to criticize their clients? Furthermore, they were uneven. Shockingly, I pointed this out to Adrian, and he agreed that my left brow was taller than my right, and re-plucked, yet when I got home, I still had to fix myself, comparing to my photo of my best brows in San Francisco. He also over trimmed the end of my right brow. If you like being treated as a client, look elsewhere. read more

I was visiting from California and cracked my acrylic pinky nail really bad. In efforts to save the nail from breaking I searched for a nail salon who could repair it. I found Karma near my hotel and walked in. The receptionist was friendly and advised that the nail tech could assist me. The nail tech Marjorie came out and I explained my repair, she quickly took me to the back. She examined my nail and not only repaired the broken nail, but also fixed any potential cracks on all my other nails. Majorie was sweet, kind and professional. When I went to check out, they advised me there was no fee, however I tipped her based on her exceptional service! read more

I needed a manicure because I had an event I was attended on a Friday night. I only had my lunch hour to use since I am always busy in after work. I looked for a place near my work that didn't charge too much for a manicure since I work in the foggy bottom/ Georgetown area. I was shocked to learn that I could come here to get a manicure for only $20. I was also able to get a same day appointment. I arrived and was taken back about 5 minutes after my scheduled time. My manicurist was very friendly and spent a lot of time on my nails. She had asked before starting my nails when was the last time I had a manicure. I told her it had been a few weeks ago. I guess my last one didn't do a good job because she had spent close to an hour on my nails. She told me my cuticles were in bad shape. I had to admit after she was done my nails looked awesome. I came in for balayage. Please look at the pictures!!! The lady who did my hair knew she messed it up and was very apologetic but not without reminding me at least 5 times that "I could go back and she would fix it without charging me" Are you kidding me?! I paid $255 for her to completely ruin my hair, put it in a ponytail (after I paid for a blow out) and send me home. It is understood that it must be fixed at no extra charge! The owner was there and his comments were "you have a lot of hair" and "that's an easy fix". Well, if the same lady who ruined my hair is the one who is going to "fix it", I don't feel very hopeful. PLUS what an awful reply from a business owner. I had my head massaged here, while listening to Jodeci over the salon speakers. Dear sweet baby Jesus, this is heaven. It's like Karma Beauty Lounge read my diary, and then knew all my secret desires and catered to them. I came here to get my hair done and it wasn't on the whim. My hairdresser for a million years, Peggy, who have followed through three different salons works here. This is by far my favorite salon that I have visited her at. I think this is the best Erwin Gomez salon that has opened to date. If you're not familiar with Erwin Gomez and his salons, here's what you need to know: 1-The man has a legion of loyal followers, including his staff 2-He knows make up (he just started his own line) and eye brows, thus the celebrity clientele. 3-He picks the best staff It's a pretty swank salon, each sylist has their own little sectioned off room/cubicle so this affords lots of privacy. I got some highlights and gloss on my hair and felt like a new women. The downside: it's pricey. Like sell your kidney/ first born pricey, but for shiny healthy hair and a good head message it might be worth it. read more

After a lot of research, I made an appointment with Adrian for a brow shaping as I am unable to get an appointment with my girl in Boston until the Fall (yikes). 11am appointment on a weekday, had it planned out to leave work for an hour and have the brows taken care of. It was hotter than a Boston girl can handle so after walking a few blocks I hopped in a cab and arrived a couple of minutes before 11. Filled out the paperwork, had a few Lifesavers from the big bowl in the waiting area, and noticed that the person I will assume is Adrian made a few eye-contact moments with the receptionist and gave the one finger up for what I assumed/hoped really was "just a minute". I waited, waited some more, and finally at 11:15 decided that I could just wait since I was there, or I could leave. I could leave and make it a wasted trip, or I could wait and maybe it really would have been a minute more, or maybe it would have been 15 minutes more... but who knows. I nicely (as nice as I could) told the receptionist that I just had to go back to work since I had no idea how long I would be there, and took a cab back. The salon called me a few hours later, but I missed the call and they did not leave a message (that would have been a great time to apologize and invite me back). That night I received an email which I assumed would have been the "we are so sorry, when can you return?" but it turned out to be an automated email telling me that I could contact them online, the website, etc. End result: brows not done, 45 minutes wasted, and $19 for two cabs. read more

Went in for an eyebrow appointment yesterday and was so impressed with the Karma team's handling of COVID precautions! It was hands down the most professional COVID response I have seen. - First, you have to schedule via phone so that they can ensure appropriate spacing between clients. - At your appointment time, you are let in by a team member who takes your temperature with a temperature gun and gives you a pump of hand sanitizer right at the door. - There is a plastic barrier between you and the reception area where you check-in and you are promptly sent in for your appointment. You do not have to touch anything. - All hair stations have been spaced out and the number of people is restricted. The stations are already separated by walls so that helps further. - For my eyebrow appointment, Erwin was wearing a large plastic face mask that covered his full-face so despite our proximity there was no opportunity for an exchange of droplets. He also sanitized the space after I left and was liberal with his use of hand sanitizer. - There was no exchange of credit cards or cash as my card on file was charged during checkout. It was all honestly very impressive. Oh and my eyebrows look great because Erwin is the best! My mom went in for a haircut with Victor the other week and also felt very comfortable. Plus, I don't know what Victor did but it looks like he managed to shave a few years off in the process - she loves the cut. read more

I've been to Karma several times since they opened last year. I've gotten a haircut, facial, eyebrows, and manicure. I'll review the other services again later but my recent gel manicure by Alexis was superb. I went into the salon with my nails looking horrendous (I had a gel manicure that was a month old). Alexis was great to converse with and she did a fantastic job on my nails. I felt like I was hanging out with a friend who happened to be doing my nails. I got many compliments on my manicure :) I'll definitely be returning. I knocked off a star because I had to wait 30 min for my appointment to begin because a bride was getting her nails done before me. Price is not bad at $40 for a gel manicure. read more

This past weekend I had the pleasure of visiting Karma for a shampoo and blowout with Skyler. I was made aware of this salon from one of my friends who raved about Skyler's professionalism and skills. This visit exceeded my expectations. I was warmly welcomed to the salon by the friendly receptionists who offered me a beverage. I was then promptly greeted by a shampoo assistant who gave me the best shampoo and scalp massage of my life! After a quick and thorough shampoo, I was seated in Skyler's chair where she asked me what style I was looking for and asked a few questions about how I usually style my hair. She gave me exactly what I wanted and I couldn't have been more satisfied with how the style came out. Also, I was in and out of salon in less than an hour! This is unheard of for me. Horrible experience with Patrick (particularly this week). I went to him for approximately a couple years and although he would do a decent job on my hair, I would frequently wait for him past my appointment time by 30 minutes to an hour. Also on several occasions when he was combing color onto my hair he would drop the wet comb onto the floor, pick it up, and continue combing my hair with the dirty comb (after the 3rd or 4th time that this happened, I asked for him to please get another comb). Because of the above, I had changed to another stylist for a while then decided to give him another try (after confirming my appointment twice). When I arrived after taking time from work and commuting to DC from Arlington he angrily (close to my face which I'm shocked in COVID time not maintaining distance) said that he was upset I changed stylists and therefore refused to do my hair ever again (no one called me ahead to tell me of this change). This is the most bizarre and unprofessional experience I've ever had. Beware. read more

I followed Lucy from Cavalry Salon to Karma Beauty Lounge. She is a wonderful colorist. She also cuts! I've been going to Lucy for a few times now for balayage. On my most recent visit, I wanted to go lighter and we decided on a darker ash blonde/brown balayage with hints of mauve :). It turned out great! See photos attached. Note: The colors are a bit darker in the photos due to lighting. I also tried a complimentary eyebrow service with Lyra at Karma, and she did a great job! I specifically told my stylist what NOT to do and they immediately did the opposite. I paid $65 for one of the quickest men's cuts I've ever had, only to have the stylist use a razor and trim off more hair than I'd asked for after explicitly advising him against using a razor on the sides of my hair and telling him to only take a small amount of length from the top. My hair will take over a month to grow back to where I want it to be and the stylist moved so quickly that it was too late for him to stop when he began his assault on my hair. It was extremely disappointing and overpriced for the product I received, and while the facilities were gorgeous and the front desk staff very friendly, I expected so much more in the substance of my actual service. Cannot say enough good things about Tim: he is absolutely amazing and does such a superb haircut. I don't let anyone else cut my hair: he is so impressive and does such a great job with long, layered cuts, and it ends up looking very modern and chic. He is also just a fun, friendly person and doesn't mind if you ask him to cut a certain part differently and will trim your bangs again later no problem. Let me just say, thank goodness I found this place and found Jillian! I came here in desperate need of a hair fix. I had gone to a nearby salon looking for a dark brown/reddish balayage. Well, I walked out with PINK hair. Like bright pink. The guy at the salon said it couldn't be fixed and I had a formal event coming up. At the recommendation of a friend I called Karma for a consultation. The woman who took my call was so understanding and assured me it could be fixed. She set me up with an appointment with Jillian. When I arrived at the salon Jillian was very sweet and understanding of my worry. We laughed at my hair disaster and she said she didn't understand what the other stylist had done to it. We looked at the photo of the color and style I wanted and she showed me a bunch of color choices in a book explaining exactly what she would use and how she would use it. I felt totally confident in her ability. I showed up to my appointment and she was prepared with all the colors and again explained to me and showed me what she using. She did her thing and checked how the color was developing the whole time. The results are AMAZING! my hair is no longer pink. It's exactly like the photo I showed her and I'm obsessed with it. Jillian is my girl and I can't recommend her enough. I also met the owner of the salon and several other employees, all who are very sweet. The salon is clean and stylish and I can't wait to go back. I had a great Beauty experience in Karma Beauty! Very good manicure, neat and clean. I've done a blow dry few times, always did great job. Facials are fantastic! I strongly recommend to go to Catherine Layrle, she is a charming French lady. I enjoyed my intracueticals deep hydration treatment. I do a lot of international flights, so my skin always needs a good hydration. Catherine did a great job to make me look fresh and glowing. Definitely coming back when in D.C again. read more

Review is for eyebrows only I was prepared to give them 2 or 3 stars because I don't care who you are, $45-$75 for an eyebrow wax is ridiculous!!!! I can't even believe I paid , but I was desperate, and quite frankly curious about a salon that charges so much for a wax because their reviews were so good. The customer service is superb, and Adrian is an absolute dream. A consummate professional, he asked about what medicine I took, and analyzed my facial muscles to determine which eyebrow had a higher arch. He was meticulous and made my eyebrows look the best they've ever looked. I don't know if I drank the koolaid, as I've gotten $12 eyebrow waxes that completely did the trick, but I enjoyed my experience and will be back again. read more

Popped into here for an emergency eyelash application before a gala. The somewhat frosty receptionist escorted me to a chair and said the makeup artist would be out shortly. I waited for about 20 to 30 minutes before she came out. The application was fine, but considering it takes 30 seconds an eye, I think the wait was a 'bit rich for my blood. Considering the proximity to the Ritz Carlton, one would think they'd be more amenable to pop-in clients dressed for a gala...it's a great time to sell services when someone is in a bind... but not them... read more

These 5 stars are for Erwin and Erwin only. I want to refrain about my judgements on his staff and other services offered at the salon (for no reason in particular). However, I will say that the decor is divine, and that Erwin will always, always, always make you feel as if you're a VIP. He's done my brows, and my makeup...and I'll say that his prices (and he, himself) is worth every last penny. I laid back in his chair for makeup, and sat up feeling like a movie star...I'm a self-professed beauty product snob/hoarder and even I didn't dream I could like he made me look. By the way, he did this makeup of mine for a national magazine feature. He's given me freebies (scalp massage/lip gloss/etc.), he's showered me with compliments on things he didn't have to, and he's given me loads of tips. My patronage of him and his services were valued and appreciated...I couldn't have felt it anymore from the way in which Erwin acts to each client (I even saw how he treated other clients before and after me). I went to Karma after my stylist David transferred there. I was able to get an appointment easily, and the receptionists were very polite. They greeted every client and offered coffee. The salon is really nice and feels upscale, and warm and welcoming. David is a great stylist and always works wonders on my hair. I just LOVE this salon! I've been in three times and gotten a facial, a hair blow out, and now a highlight/haircut and on all three occasions I received EXCEPTIONAL service! The location is stunning and I always leave feeling relaxed and pampered. I just got a haircut with TIm a few days ago and this was by far the BEST haircut I've received in DC. I've been to three different salons since moving here from SF almost two years ago and I've been unimpressed with the outcome and value all three times. Tim is really sweet and hilarious and he made sure that I was a 100% satisfied with my cut and color. I had a pretty woman moment and felt completely transformed and I've received compliments from my friends and strangers on the street asking me about my cut. He also took the time to show me how to style properly and get the most bang for my buck with product and showed me two different updo's for my new style. My hair dresser Ji was very nice and sweet, she listened to me and also expressed her opinion, which I liked. The assistant did a decent job washing my hair, but I wish she spent more time massaging my scalp. Everyone in the salon was extremely nice. I would not recommends buying hair products there, as they charge more than triple of the price on the same p roduct on Amazon. I got 0.85 oz bottle of Moroccan oil treatment for $ 35 only to discover that the same bottle is sold for $9 on Amazon plus delivery. I have money and don't mind spending it on quality products and services, but I also like not to be ripped off. Minus one star for that. read more

Its rare that I give 'ok' ratings, but after nearly 4 days after my facial I was hoping to see better results. This was my first time here, and I chose it because, while I have a couple of go-to place for facials, this place was highly rated for their anti-aging facial. Naturally in my quest for everlasting youth I was going to check it out. The aesthetician was really nice, everyone was. Erwin himself was there which is thumbs up because it's rare to see owners in the salon, doing work and ensuring everyone has a good experience. But that's really all I can say. My skin looks a little worse than when I went in it. Its red in places (no, I don't have rosacea), a couple of places of scarring from extractions (yes, I get them every facial I've had and I get 4 a year for the past...well, forever, and never had that happen), and my skin looks...just there. Not bright like I anticipated with getting my skin flush with peptides. I take VERY good care of my skin, using all the right products for my skin type/age, so if anything those products should have an even better results after getting a deep cleansing. Also not to be a brat, but I didn't get the face and hand massage as described, just the shoulders (which was lovely.). So will you get a good facial here? Sure. Are there better ones out there priced at $145 (she convinced me I needed the eye treatment) or lower? Absolutely.
