Great BBQ joint. I got the big sandwich called Josey Wales. It is a great buy and the food is great. I wasn't real hungry so I dismantled the the sandwich. I ate the brisket and the side. Next morning, I used the sausage with some eggs for breakfast for two. At lunch, I used the Turkey for a sandwich. The following day for lunch, I used the bun and pulled pork for a sandwich. Nice atmosphere, but strange hours (they're only open a few hours during the week). Have ordered the pork ribs, brisket, pulled pork, bbq beans and potato salad. The ribs have good flavor, but I was irritated to find they gave me 2 ribs with hardly any meat on them. The brisket has good flavor, but they sold me end cuts that were pretty dry. Pulled pork was good. The sides were probably from Sam's Club, nothing special. Kind of expensive, not too great when you order to go, get home, and find you got ribs with little meat and dry end cuts of brisket. read more

Prior to the Sturgis rally, we heard that JR's Rhodehouse barbecue pit was opening a restaurant at exit 52 in Black Hawk, and having had an incredible meal the last time the restaurant was in Piedmont, we knew we had to return. The first time we tried the barbecue, everything was absolutely awesome, so we had high expectations upon our return. We were definitely not let down! We had the beef brisket sandwich, the EL Diablo sandwich, and the pork ribs. All were absolutely outstanding! So good in fact, we came back for a second night before we left the rally. The only negative is that restaurant is only open for until the food runs out on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Definitely the best barbecue outside of Texas, and maybe even in Texas. Hopefully the restaurant will generate great business and will expand their hours. Definitely a must try. read more

We are from SC and decided to visit SD, WY & MT on spring break this year. My husband did some research before the trip and found J.R.'s so we decided to visit while we were in Rapid City. This turned out to be the BEST food experience of our entire 5-day trip. The food was outstanding and very plentiful, and the staff was super friendly and helpful. We've had Texas style BBQ before and this was spot on. The brisket and pulled pork were our favorites, but the sausage and ribs were amazing, too! If we ever have the good fortune to return to Rapid City, J.R.'s will be at the top of our restaurant list. read more

I have to start this review by saying this is one of the places I don't want to tell you about. I don't want anyone else to know what an amazing restaurant this is. I want to keep it all to myself, but I can't do that this place is too good for you to pass up. JR's make some of the finest barbecue I have ever had in my entire life and I am a giant fat guy that has enjoyed barbecue in every state in this country except for Hawaii. Some of the things that you really must try are the beef short ribs, they have a wonderful spicy, peppery bark, enough smoke that you can taste it, but not overwhelmingly so. The internal fat renders out and becomes the best flavor imaginable. The pulled pork is terrific, the brisket is to die for and the pork ribs couldn't be finer. Whether you're just passing through or a local resident do not miss the opportunity that is JR's barbecue. There is only one catch, they have limited hours so make sure they're open when you get there and call ahead to make sure they have what you want and haven't sold out. This is the best in the area! Super friendly staff and Pitmaster. We got a sample of the Turkey and WOW! Dripping with juice and a light smoke. Best ever! We couldn't decide on what to get so we ended up getting the Gout Platter. A pound of every meat, half rack of ribs and a half loaf of bread. The brisket was AMAZING and ribs best we have ever had.
