Stopped by for some hair products & hubs came here to satisfy the sweet tooth. This review will only be on the treats purchased. He picked up two cupcakes & two cake balls. I'm not sure what kind of cake balls he picked up but I can say that my daughter & hubs liked them. They would recommend these in any flavor. Hubs had a cookie dough cupcake that he enjoyed & especially liked the surprise in the center which appeared to be a little cookie dough. He said it was good & not too sweet. I had a carrot cake something. I'm sure it's probably called a cupcake but for me it was more like a little muffin with a ton of frosting on top. While it's a little sweet it's not overwhelming. If you are the type of person who takes the top off of the cupcake to flip it upside down & eat it like a little sandwich, this will not work. I tried but the size is wrong. I love carrot cake & this didn't disappoint other than wishing it was a little bigger. We'll be back again when the sweet tooth hits to give some other stuff a try. read more

J Raes is a fantastic bakery, I would highly recommend trying it out if you like sweets. They sell all kinds of things ranging from cookies, cake balls, cupcakes, cheesecakes, etc. Whenever I go here, I can't leave without some cake balls and sugar cookies. They have the best cake balls I have ever had, and they sell a number of different flavors so you can get a nice variety. And their sugar cookies...wow. They always have sugar cookies ranging in size from small to large, cut out and decorated into all kinds of cute things. Their sugar cookies are much thicker then I'm used to, but they aren't at all dry, and they have a great kind of almond-ey flavor. This place is definitely worth checking out. Yes, you may spend a little bit more on your sweets here than you would at the grocery store....but this is a bakery, with delicious quality products that have been freshly made, so a slightly higher price is of no concern to me. read more

Looking for some bakeries around Wichita, KS and found this online. I had chocolate chip cookies, m&m cookie and a German chocolate cupcake. Cookies were awesome and cupcake that I had...sweetness was overpowering like Sam's cupcakes. It was so good I went 2 more times the following week. Prices are similar to Crumbl cookies around $3.50-$4 price range. I had the strawberry cupcake and the wife had the lemon cupcake. Cupcakes are so delicious. This is my new to go to spot for fresh cookies and cupcakes. There are so many cookies decorated for all ages. Love it. read more

I really really like their cheesecakes--my family will often pick up a large one for a special occasion. The crust is thick and the cheesecake isn't overly sweet like a lot of other places. All of their cookies are very good as well; their cupcakes are a bit much with how much icing they pile on them. My one negative comment about this place is that the staff could do more to be friendly and not awkwardly watch you while you make your selection. I tried this place recently and it was not disappointing! I was afraid that going so close to their closing time I would be choosing from all the unwanted leftovers from that day but they still had a TON of cookies, cupcakes, cake pops, and cheesecake left. I got 2 cake pops (chocolate & vanilla,) 2 cupcakes (Snickers & strawberry,) and 2 sugar cookies. Husband enjoyed the chocolate cake pop but said the Snickers cupcake was a little too sweet. I had the vanilla cake pop & it was my favorite thing. The strawberry cupcake was good but I ate less than half the frosting because it was too sweet. Super moist & delish! Cookies were awesome & didn't taste like normal store-bought sugar cookies (a hint of cherry maybe? I don't know but it's addicting.) Total for everything was $15 even. Their cheesecake looked super good but for $4.50 a slice I passed, maybe some other day though! Not sure if it was the owner who helped me but she was really friendly & patient. If there's one place that has been hit by a lot of negative (and appropriately filtered) reviews, it's Auntie Mae's Cafe. If we continue counting, though, the number two position would have to go to J Raes. Perusing the complaints of the bottom feeders, I wasn't expecting to find much worthwhile information, but there were more than a few who kept bringing up the bakery's cookies; enough consensus to consider them a problem. They're so well-designed, though: a steady hand with a piping bag was able to turn the tops of these cookies into a jayhawk, shock, or whatever other sports mascot is in town (I'm not what you'd call a sports guy, as evidenced by me writing an online review of a bakery). Once you bite into the cookie though, you encounter sweetness with a texture of Play-Doh that I think can be attributed to the fondant icing used. Ace of Cakes taught us the malleability of the sugar-glucose-glycerol-gelatin concoction can be used to make some pretty looking designs - as J Raes has accomplished here - but as a result the texture of the iced parts of the cookie is a bit like biting into clay. It's a personal preference thing, but it's a sacrifice made to improve the look of the cookie design. I wouldn't order them again, but I don't hold it against them, either. Elsewhere, the bakery shines. Their flavored cheesecakes by the slice are as heavy and creamy and rich as I would hope, and the rotating flavors make trying a few different types pretty easy. Also sampled was a fondant-covered cake pop which I thoroughly enjoyed, as well as a cupcake that would be a contender for the best in the city if there were anyone in town who cared about such a distinction. J Raes isn't exactly a neighborhood bakery - they've been doing it up in Dallas for years - but their creativity and skill is a little higher than we're used to. I have driven by this bakery several times with the intent to stop the next time I had time. I finally had the time and opportunity recently. I was with my daughter who is four and we absolutely loved the decor of his place. It is small but decorated very well. They had a good selection of cookies and cupcakes. The service here was mediocre, we had to wait about 5 minutes for someone to come up from the back to wait on us. I didn't mind however because this allowed my daughter time to look and choose her treats. They also allowed me to try a sample of their featured cupcake (can't remember the flavor) but I did not care for it - however, to be fair I'm not a big cupcake eater. I allowed my daughter to choose a total of four cookies for herself and her siblings. She chose decorated sugar cookies. I was taken back to the thickness of the cookies (at least 1/2 to 3/4 inch). But it was what she wanted. When I paid, the total with tax came to more than $20. Are you kidding me - for four cookies???? Ok, now I am over the shock of the price, we go home to share the treats with her older teenage siblings. Everyone was impressed with how nicely the cookies were decorated but it took just one bite for everyone to determine these were not good cookies at all. Because of the thickness, the cookies were doughy and tased undone. They left a lingering twang taste in your mouth. No one, not even my four year old ate more than three bites before they were thrown in the trash. What a waste of money. While the decor of this place is cute, the decor alone will not keep them in business. It is their product which everyone will remember. The selection is good, but if it tastes horrible, what does it matter how nicely the items are decorated? Because of the total dislike from all my kids and the price being outrageous, we will not be back. It's unfortunate because this could be a fun place to stop for a quick treat if it wasn't overpriced and gross. I'm giving it a net total of two stars, three stars for decor; one star for taste. This is my second post for J Raes as my first was filtered. I find it quite peculiar that so many reviews for this company have been filtered. And the filtered reviews are meh - at best. I tried a couple of their cookies and they weren't anything too special, especially for the price. Too much flower for my taste. 3.5 stars for being average. Also, I had a coupon for 2 free cupcakes that I got in the mail. I took it in the day it expired at 7pm, but they had closed at 6. I took it in the next day, and they wouldn't even bargain with me. I'm not from around here so I thought it be nice to try something new. My husband is a business owner so I always try to support other businesses that are not corporate. Anyways to the reviews, I ordered a $10 cheesecake and the lady went to the back to package it and put it in a box with out me even seeing what I'm buying. I also order a few mini cheesecakes and cupcakes. Let's start with the $10 cheesecake, it was burnt when we got home. It tasted burnt and honestly it's not worth $10 due too the design of size these come in. Not much flavor as well. The minis are as big as a cupcake with out the frosting so they are quite small but price is understandable. The cupcakes taste like Walmart cupcakes so your paying extra for the design in my opinion. Altogether it wasn't a great experience as far as taste goes and I was sold by the look of these desserts. The teenagers there also seam moody as if they don't really like there job, idk maybe they were having a bad day but still you should be polite and smile always when dealing with customers. I've driven past this bakery several times and I finally got the time to stop by. I went with my friend and the first thing I noticed about the store is that it is bright and feels spacious. We were greeted when we entered and was invited to try a sample of their sugar cookie. The first thing I noticed about their sugar cookies was how thick they were! The cookies themselves were the thickest sugar cookies I have ever seen and something about them didn't taste right. Perhaps it was the icing but I was not impressed. We decided to purchase their red velvet cupcake, their coconut cupcake and a snickerdoodle cookie.We took them home to eat since there wasn't really a place to sit down inside (the tables and the chairs were too low to comfortably sit down and eat) . The first thing we tried was the red velvet cupcake. I have to admit, the little frosted santa face on the red velvet cupcake was super cute. Unfortunately, that's about all that I can say that I like about it. The frosting on the red velvet cupcake was too sweet and like the previous reviewer said, the ratio is definitely off. The cake part tasted bland, dry and not what I feel a red velvet cake should taste like. The next item we tried was the coconut cupcake. I had difficulty getting past the frosting on this as well because it is so sweet. I also had difficulty finding the coconut flavor in this cupcake. The cake was not moist, the frosting was hard and we had to crack into it in order to eat it. Lastly, we tried the snickerdoodle cookie. We tried it and felt that something tasted off with this cookie as well. It tasted almost powdery at the end. I also did not like how the cookie looked like a flat disc and did not have a low dome profile. I would have considered buying a cheesecake to try but their prices are steep for what you get. It also didn't help that the cheesecakes on display looked slightly burnt and not appetizing. We love cheesecake and decided to try this place since there really isn't a great cheesecake place in Wichita. We were SO disappointed. I highly doubt anything was made fresh daily at this store. We got the feeling that things are shipped in and decorated at the store. It was a little confusing as there are not sign boards with prices or menus until you get to the cash register. We purchased two cupcakes. Both had way too much and too sweet icing that was very hard. The cake itself was very dry and stale tasting. We threw them away after a couple of bites. They were lemon and red velvet. They looked pretty, but that was about it. The cheesecake was frozen and we were told to let it thaw for 30 minutes. (We can buy frozen cheesecake at any store, why pay so much for "fresh" cheesecake if it is frozen?) We decided to take a chance. We let it thaw and had it as dessert for dinner. It was HORRIBLE. Very grainy tasting and the strawberry flavor tasted like something you would find in a really cheap lipgloss. I think this one was frozen for too long. What a waste of money! Seriously, you can buy "Archer Farms" cheesecake frozen at Target and it is so much better. We were hoping for a great cheesecake like we've had in New York, but no such luck. I absolutely love this place! Their sugar cookies are fantastic, their cupcakes are exquisite and have lots of excellent frosting, and their cake pops are great too. This may be the best cupcake place in the entire city of Wichita. My opinion of course is biased due to the fact that I like lots of sweet frosting on the cupcakes. I can not get enough of this place!!! The atmosphere was wonderful and everyone was so friendly and from the minute we walked in. I am a BIG bakery fan and always try new ones when they open no matter what part of town. Unlike the previous remarks, my experience was the best. Of course I knew it would be because I have visited their Ft. Worth store. I brought a friend to introduce her to their products. My friend and I both agreed that the cupcakes are "to die for". Terrible. I tried their iced sugar cookies back when they first opened in November. They are thick and taste like play-doh. I gave them a shot a couple days ago and it was just as bad.
