I hired these guys a few months ago to clear a good amount of trees from one of my rental properties. It wasn't cheap, and they actually returned to give me a second quote (that was higher in cost) because my previous quote was 'too old' or something to that nature. The three main issues I have with the work they did are the following: 1. Most importantly, they did not cut to my satisfaction. The point of hiring them was to cut trees away from my rental property, especially the roof-area, as I'm putting a new metal roof on the property. I've uploaded a photo that shows there's still a tree hanging over the roof area. I don't want any limbs to fall onto my new $30,000 metal roof. I told one of the workers to cut the specific limb off and he claimed the limb was too high up and they only cut low-hanging limbs that are just above the roof. When I took my issue up with Lisa, she claimed Jake stated it would potentially harm the tree. Well, I value my $30,000 roof more than a tree limb. The entire point of hiring these people to cut the tree was to minimize the odds of having a large limb damage the new roof. But they didn't come back and make it right and prior to roof instillation I'll have to pay another tree company to cut the limb. 2. They're supposed to clean up after the work is finished. As you can see by my third photo, they left a whole lot of debris behind which I had to clean up. Not really right considering I paid them almost $3000. 3. They were supposed to cut the trees down as low as possible. They didn't do a very good job of this. I'll add a photo to display how the stumps looked. I gave them two stars instead of one star because they did cut most trees properly, though as mentioned, the stumps should have been cut lower. Would I hire them again? Doubtful. I prefer to work with people who do the job properly and take pride in correct work from start to finish. read more

This company did some work for a neighbor. As they were arriving they knocked down our internet/cable line. They made it clear they had zero intention of communicating with us much less fixing it. When we called them out they reluctantly agreed to fix it. By "fix it", they taped the down wire to the penelec line, with electrical tape. The tape melted. The cable/internet service was impacted. Spectrum came out and had to run new lines. Now neither utility company knows whose responsibility the compromised line is, because the tape fused parts of them together. Now, in addition, a portion of the melty-taped line is down and in the driveway. Add to this, half a dozen voicemails were left with the company who couldn't even have an ounce of professional decency to return a call. Pretty terrible, would never hire them! read more

They came one afternoon and gave us a price for removing a tree. We cautioned them that they may have to check with the borough, but were assured that they"knew the arborist for the township." The next AM, they showed up, followed by the local police with a citation for $600 for improperly removing a township planting. We were not given a 72 hour right of refusal as is standard with household proposals. Also, they lied about the arborist, as the township did not have one. It turns out that they township would have removed the problem tree, but we were not given time to check on it. This is in the hands of the PA Attorney General for deception and violation of the 72 hour rule. read more

We elected to go with Thomas Tree Service to remove dead tree. They showed up as scheduled, used heavy duty "mats" placed on the ground, so not to make ruts on the lawn and removed the tree as promised. However, our issues started with the grinding of the stump. It seems their stump grinder person does not use the same lawn "mats" as the tree removal folks, so we had ruts on the lawn and eight holes from their machine ranging from 6-8" deep and 4-6" wide. The other issue dealt with the removal (or lack there of)of the ground up stump. We naturally assumed they include the removal of the ground up stump with their quote. We were left with a pile of ground up tree bark 4' high x 7' wide. When we called to complain, it was pointed out to us that on the quote & it did include the removal the "grounds". Suggest they make the switch to include that duty in their total quote, as consumers expect it. read more

I had part of a very large tree fall on my garage on 7/19/2020. I contacted J Thomas tree service as I had a neighbor use them and they did a very nice job. My nightmare with them began from the beginning. I opted to have the entire tree removed as it was in poor condition and near power lines. The initial quote was almost $4000.00 and with stump "removal" over $4100. I had several other people just stop by when they saw the tree down and offer to do the job for much less ($2500). I had committed to J Thomas by that point and believed that I had made the right decision. They were to show up on 7/21/20; I was notified that they could not be there due to other work. My car was trapped inside my garage at this point, but I said okay and they were to show on 7/22/20 at 8AM. I finally contacted them at 9 and was told they got a late start. At 9:58 AM they finally showed up, they had until 10AM and I was going to contact one of the other services. The first day when I asked if they would leave some of the wood as I have a wood burning fireplace I was told we don't cut firewood. But then my cute neighbor cam over and they agreed to leave wood for her; I asked again as it was my tree and the agreed to leave wood in my garage where I had designated. I will need to hire someone to cut it into smaller pieces for me before I can use it, but so be it. On day 2 I had an appointment and had to leave while they were working. They drove the bucket truck onto my sidewalk cracking 2 of the pads. I had the sidewalk installed in 2017 for $7000, now 2 pads will need to be replaced. Then the stump grinder came. He blew a tire on the heavy machine that he was using and drove it on the rim over my lawn, driveway, and sidewalk creating big gouges in all. When I spoke to him about this he was very rude. I asked about the clean up; he said we don't do that get your grandsons to do it. I have had 4 stumps removed from my property in the past and not once did the person leave the ground up debris. When I asked about the cracked sidewalk he said it "wasn't up to code" and that is why it cracked. It was up to code for a walkway, not a driveway (4" and 6" respectively). When I spoke with Mr. Thomas about this I stated that it was my belief that the young man would not have spoken to a man in the condescending manner that he spoke to me. Mr. Thomas became very defensive and stated that his employee was a great guy and well liked by everyone. I just stated that i did not appreciate his manner with me and I certainly did not appreciate the amount of property damage that they did. He offered to have his guys come and put in new sidewalk, I said no that I wanted my concrete guy to do it. I also asked about the debris (including a pile about 2' x 4' x 6" that was left on my neighbor's property). He was very rude and stated that it is right on the estimate form, underlined and highlighted that they do not remove the debris. I noticed that someone else who posted a review had a similar experience. It is on the form, but at the very bottom and in very small print. My overall experience with this company was that the owner, Mr. Thomas is very rude and condescending. The old saying that you get what you pay for in this case is not exactly accurate. They were the most expensive and at the end of the day I still have a large mess on my property that I must hire someone else to come clean up. I must also hire someone else to come and repair the property damage that they did (Mr. Thomas told me to "hire a landscaper" and that most people do that after having a tree removed, I see why if his company does it as I also have numerous large divots in my lawn from where they just dropped large branches to the ground). Overall experience was poor, however, they did manage to take the tree down without knocking down the power lines. read more

J Thomas employees are very aggressive and down right rude when it comes to dealing with neighbors that live on the street that they are working on. They will block your ability to get to your own home and when you attempt to get to your home they will approach your vehicle and yell at you like who do you think you are? If they would take into consideration that the folks that live on that street need to get to their homes for medical conditions or child or pet concerns or elderly care they would realize that preventing the owner of a home from getting to his/her home is a vital necessity and not something to be overlooked in order to cut down a tree. If they are going to block a person from getting to their home for hours in order to cut down a tree, they should take the time to knock on the neighbors doors and at least warn them of the extended disruption so that the neighbor can make accommodations. It's very disarming to all of a sudden not to be able to get back home to your loved ones who may have medical needs because J Thomas decided on his own to prevent you from doing so. A simple knock on the door to notify one of the disruptions would allow the homeowner to make accommodations but I guess J Thomas Tree service were raised differently and they just take over your street like the nazis use to and to them, money is the bottom line. This may sound trivial, but think about when it happens to you and you can't get back to your home to your loved ones in need because of how J Thomas treats the neighbors on the block that he's invading. A little common courtesy goes a long way. Especially now a days when a lot of us are just trying to get the necessary essentials and trying to get back home safely. I hope Jacob Thomas understands this and will change the way he operates his company! read more

Girlfriend hired these guys to remove some shrubbery in front of the house. They cut the shrubs at ground level and used a machine to remove roots / stumps. Had to call and complain about leaving the holes and not filling them in. No "lawn mats " that I could see were used - as there was considerable damage to the yard. They came back and sort of fixed it - albeit leaving the dirt on the window sills from where the stump grinder threw it there. No call when they were showing up - no follow up call when the work was completed. Very disappointed in the service. read more
