Been while since I posted on Yelp! But since I used it to find the restaurant, I wanted to pay back with a review. The food, service, and ambiance were all just fine to superb. As you read through the other reviews they mention the name change to Ichiwa and the great views here in the waterfront. Special highlight for the Pork Katsu Ramen soup. Easily some of the best I have ever had. Highly recommend it and if I was going to be in Dublin longer, I would come back and try other flavors. The edamame were great and just properly salty without being overload with actual kosher salt. The Volcano role was pretty good. A bit too large to easily eat but certainly proportioned well for the price. I couldn't finish, but did finish the Unagi (eel) on top as it was tasty! Anyway, enjoy the food and the view. read more

Fantastic yaki soba, sushi, and even though it's a Japanese restaurant, the mabo tofu was amazing - very little heat and no Chinese peppercorn (which gives the normal mouth-numbing aspect of mapo tofu), but so tasty and such good tofu. Wanted a break from pub food somewhere close to my location-this is what I did... Food: meh--maguro wasn't as fresh as I wanted, tempura roll was ok (crab bits are imitation crab folks), and gyoza was ok--small plates. Gluten-free soy available, but not on all dishes. Dessert NOT available--I came midweek, not sure if this is a regular thing or just for the day of (no explanation by staff...) Service: friendly staff. Requested a glass of water (no ice) with my hot green tea (I like to cool down to drink right away). Filtered water charge (€1). Atmosphere: great location off the quay within walking distance of my hotel. Good to try somewhere close and support local venues. I'll try another sushi place next time. read more

We walked in and were directed to a table and that was the last thing that happened. We sat for at least 10 mins without 1 person coming to take an order of any kind. I could literally see the rice through these skimpy/thin/pathetic pieces of fish! I've never had nigiri that was such a blatant ripoff in my entire life. It's often the case with restaurants with a great view usually don't have great food, and this one definitely falls in this category. 2 stars for simply being next to the water with a nice view of the Samuel Beckett Bridge. Honestly this place just cannot get better. What are the components that make up a five star venue? 1. Food - Without a doubt the best sushi in Dublin. Made for you fresh, on the spot, right then. Rice that takes 8 hours to get right, homemade soy sauce and miso soup. Yesterday I went for the seafood combo - prawn nigiri, Philadelphia roll, Alaska roll, California tuna and crispy tuna maki. Each one was better than the one before. All beautifully and artfully presented. This is a restaurant that takes pride in what it serves. They also serve a few options for those non-sushi lovers including steak and chicken wings - but don't let this worry you - the sushi here is top class. Try the spider or volcano rolls on the dinner menu - they're sensational. Oh also - they do fabulous loose leaf teas! YEY. 2. Staff - As mentioned above - the staff here take real pride in what they do. Have a chat with Jason the chef when you get in there - he will guide you and educate you on the food and the science behind it. Not really the traditional kind of Sushi, more experimental, but awesome nevertheless. Honestly, 8 pieces of a Spider Roll (soft shell crab, crab meat, masago, avocado, €14.50) will fill you up - you should enjoy every piece. Also fantastic: Volcano Roll (prawn tempura topped with eel, €14.50) and Inari (sweet fried tofu, €3). If you like it classic, go for the Deluxe Bento Box (seafood sushi, golden fried gyoza, sushi rice, edamame, miso soup, €15.50). The chefs here put an extra effort on presentation, that makes every dish a real eye candy. I sat at home browsing some €€ places with excellent yelp reviews and came across this gem! I had never heard of it and based on the reviews, I just had to give it a go. Great spot if you're driving, there's generally free parking after 7pm on nearby streets. I would recommend reserving a table for the evening as it's a very small restaurant. If you can, ask for a table by the window at the river. I can only imagine how great this must be at sunset! The decor is simple, nothing special. It's very cosy and what I would picture a Japanese sushi bar to be like. What really made this place stand out for me was the service. We were greeted by a lovely woman whose English wasn't perfect, but she was really sweet and would make sure she had our order exactly right. Very friendly, she made us feel right at home. On to the food. My OH and I ordered some fried udon noodles each. I had tofu and he had steak. Mine was fantastic, just the right combination of veggies and tofu. Husbands steak was perfect! They even asked how he wanted it. Delicious! But our sushi was the prize of the night. I had a Philidelphia roll and husband had a spicy tempura roll. Wow wow wow! You can tell they make it to order, it was amazingly fresh. I checked in on yelp and had the Japanese green tea, which was really light and the perfect accompaniment for my great meal. The best part of the night was the bill. In total including two aloe Vera drinks it was 52e and we were stuffed! Incredible value! While the decor might not be as great as yamamori, the food and the service is second to none. I can see myself becoming a regular here quite quickly! Do yourself a favour and try this place. Finally I made it to J2 Sushi. And you know what? It's fantastishion! Yes, I spelled it left, I mean right :p I'll start with statement: if you are Japanese cuisine lover or had a thought to try one - GO to J2 Sushi. Why? Why would you listen to some random reviewer? Well, because You will molest your taste receptors with their excellent food. Oh, I meant it in a good way ;) Ok, jokes aside. Place is not as big as Yamamori (sushi), but it makes up with its finest Japanese food. We ate three four: J2 Sake Special, Salami bento box, misu soup, which was free and desert Green tea cheesecake. And also, we got free green tea after checking-in in Yelp app. Bento box was not over loaded, but my missus couldn't finish it all. I came in to help. Was glad to do it (yes, I am a hungry bastard, joking). Then, my J2 Sake special was something I haven't tried before. It's kind of a sushi, but with a lot of salmon. Salmon was most perfect I have ever eaten. It's true. It melted in my mouse as some vanilla ice cream in a hot summer's day. There were only three pieces for €9.50, but it was enough and didn't feel over paying for it. Misu soup was lovely, also, can't think of anything bad that brought my attention. Finally, the dessert - green tea cheesecake. Didn't know this kind of cheesecake existed. Well, call me ignorant, but I count my self lucky bastard for eating it with most pleasure I could provide for my taste receptors :) (see pictures, it looks even cool). Staff. Staff is mostly, I assume, Japanese. There's a little accent barrier, which is a common thing for Dubliners anyway, right, folks? Waitress were very friendly, smiling and welcoming. I would have asked for a phone number, if I wouldn't have been married haha-ha :) We also ordered a bottle of plum wine (see pictures). Bottle is weird, but we liked it so much, that we took it home. Yep, we are that bad :D But don't judge yet, inside of that bottle there're plums. And bottle is easily opened. I ate them plums with ecstasy as they were soaked up in that wine for who know how long. No beer. Other alcohol drinks (wine and sake) are not cheap. For the end, few minor thing for the management to consider. Toilet. Yes, singular. That's ok. But there's no sign of where is the toilet located. You have to ask waitress or notice someone else going for a peepee, that's what I did, BTW. Another thing is and good and maybe not. Plastic soup spoon and plastic soup bowl. I liked, that they are light and didn't feel cheap. But isn't it a standard, that in a classy restaurant they'd have higher class dishes? But then, J2 Sushi isn't luxurious restaurant. I liked them plastic flatware. Oh, and chop stick were very nice and smooth in your hand. I am skipping Japanese take away next time and better heading out for the J2 Sushi again! read more

My best friend and I came here for lunch on a Saturday. The location is gorgeous, they have(/had) a deal on for a free pot of green tea with check-in, and it was really nice inside - but I have to say I was disappointed in the service. To be blunt, I'm generally not bothered by lack of fluent English as long as the staff are apparently making an effort - but the staff here didn't seem to give a hoot (PG word there) and they were borderline rude, which didn't make me particularly inclined to forgive them for messing up my friend's order. She asked for spicy tuna rolls in the bento box and they brought tempura, which was unsurprising as the waiter gave up trying to understand what she was politely requesting in simple language after about 5 seconds and just nodded and walked away. The food that came was great - and the tea was also really good - but the service really just ruined the experience for me, and my friend said it wasn't the first time they had messed up an order due to lack of English skills or unwillingness to stay and sort out what the request was. It wasn't cheap either. Unfortunately I don't think I'll be back anytime soon. read more

Hats of to j2. I didn't think it was gonna impress me as much as it did, but my ohhhhh my. I may have a new fav sushi spot in town. I had 8 avocado rolls, 2 wakame gunkan, and vegetable gyozas. The bill worked out as €12.50, is that not insane?!?! Honestly the best value ever. They even have free miso soup on top of all that. I don't usually like miso but this was defo the best I've had. The tofu bitts at the end of the soup were tiny creamy cubes of yumness. The location of j2 isn't ideal. It's quite on the outskirts of town, but the view of the Liffey is defo worth it. Great staff, delicious quality sushi and amazing value. Looking forward to returning to J2 ASAP :) read more

Wow wow wow. This place really made an impression on me. It's small but if you get in early you can get a seat by the waterfront of the Liffey which really adds to the experience. Myself and the yelp 'Queen of Dublin' came here at about 5pm last Wednesday when it was nice and quiet. We both ordered their daily deluxe bento box which on that day included chicken teriyaki, fish tempura as well as chefs selection of sushi, 2x gyoza, salad, edamame and some miso soup. It was a box of delights! The chicken teriyaki was absolutely delicious. It had a smokey griddle flavour as well as the sweet teriyaki sauce and the chicken melted in the mouth. The fish tempura size was very generous and tasty. It was a white fish though and I would have preferred squid or prawn instead. The batter on the tempura was a little bit doughy and that was my only criticism of the meal. The gyoza were good as was the miso and piping hot! The sushi was so fresh and tasty and the edamame were different and nice for a change. The green tea was lovely and not too strong like the tea served in some other sushi restaurants. The staff were extremely friendly and accommodating. If I were going again I think I'd go for the chicken teriyaki bento and maybe a small side of extra sushi. Really looking forward to my next visit! I've included photos of the menu as the menu on their website doesn't include everything. Take my advice and go that little bit out of your way to sample the delights J2 has to offer. You won't regret it. read more

My first visit back after the fantastic Yelp event... bad Timmy! It was a rainy evening on our visit and there is something about sitting in a glass box with rain drops trickling down the glass exterior... *dramaaaaa* Food and service was excellent as usual, I think I managed to sway my diehardcore-Yamamori-fan friend of mine who thought J2 was better. The spider sushi bento box was excellent and the prices for wine are surprisingly reasonable. My only complaint was the spicy tuna and avocado maki roll. For the price, I'd expected fresh tuna sashimi with shimichi chilli powder, but what I got appeared to some cheaper offcuts. It tasted OK (not great) but certainly did not look appealing. Oh, and the avocado was unripe... boo! So by all means, visit this lovely Japanese restaurant but choose your sushi wisely! read more

Also, I don't think I've had a better miso soup anywhere else in Dublin so do give it a shot when you're here. The bento box is very filling (I went for the one with Vegetarian Tempura) and goes very well with green tea and the amazing views of Liffey on the side. I've been out of range of my favorite sushi joint in Seattle for just about three months now. Tonight, after moving into our new apartment, I brought up Yelp to find me a good dinner and sushi popped up on my list. Not just sushi, but sushi described as the best in Dublin, only 10 minutes away. I almost fainted. I mean, we're on an island here.. The fish is pretty great.. But sushi is, well, a bit far away for the local palate. I saw that some of my yelpers had given it five stars, so I gathered my courage and decided to give it a go. I wanted to take my lady there once she joined me on the emerald isle, if the quality held up to the praise. Long story short, I was amazed. Now the long version. I started with an order of miso soup.. Ahhh miso, how I missed you. The soup was delectable.. Not too salty, not too much tofu, and served at the perfect sipping temperature. Next on my list was the litmus test of a good sushi joint: salmon and tuna sashimi. If you can't get these right, you might as well be making fish and chips. My taste buds were delighted. The tuna was so clean, so fresh, not a hint of fish taste remained on my tongue. The salmon was a great cut, fatty but smooth, and perfect sized pieces. After such a wonderful start, I was happy to try the Unagi nigiri.. And I was not disappointed. Just the right amount of sauce, perfectly cooked, melted in my mouth. They have a healthy selection of fine sake for my fellow lovers of the rice wine, and the standard Asahi and Kirin beers to wash down your meal.. I was so impressed I immediately wrote my review at the table. Needless to say, highly recommended, and I look forward to many a night here. read more

J2 really impressed me. The quality and quantity of food was amazing, the service was spot on, and the venue has views of the river. I ordered the chirashi - a bowl of sushi rice HEAPED with fresh fish, seafood and tamago (cooked sweet egg). The presentation was beautiful, with generously thick slices of fish arranged artfully over seasoned rice. Miso soup was offered free-of-charge as well! For €13.95, it was a ridiculous value! I also ordered the blooming Japanese green tea... delicious and, again, aesthetically faultless. Served in a glass teapot, the tea "blooms" as it steeps. Now for good food, I'd happily sit in a cardboard box, but J2 has gorgeous, almost 360° views. I was there on a Sunday afternoon for a late lunch, so it was almost empty and felt airy and spacious. I have read other reviews about how it can get so packed at nighttime that you really don't see much outside, but I had beautiful unobstructed views of the Liffey! I took a sushi roll with fried prawns, and if I remember well asparagus and avocado. I didn't really enjoyed it, the sushi were too big and a bit tasteless except it was a bit spicy. We took edamame and salmon / avocado / cheese rolls to share, be both thoughts those rolls were a bit too big as well, also, I think the salmon wasn't raw but smoked which made it a bit disgusting in the end. Located along the Liffey in a glass building with relaxing views of the river, the sushi is superb here they take care to make each piece look like it's straight out of a glossy foodie magazine with taste to match. The kitchen is open so you can watch the guys carefully putting your Sushi together - so you know it's fresh! They can get busy here in the evenings but most times you can just walk in without a booking and get a table. It's also one of the more reasonably priced Japanese restaurants in Dublin and without any of the pretentiousness some of them seem to have. They have some good mains too the Salmon is tasty and there is a burger and fries option for that friend you have who is scared of all things Japanese 'cause they think it's all raw fish ha ha..you know the one, there is always one. I really had high hopes for here but I can't give this a five. We got a window table so the views over the river were incredible. Service was largely dreadful and just all over the place. Kind of felt like the staff we first had contact with were so uninterested in being there. What a shame. We were left waiting about 15-20 minutes for our order to be taken. Another couple that arrived in around the time we ordered got their order taken jays after. That was not good. Really bad first impression. We ordered white wine which came out in a Le Creuset cooler that kept it nice and chilled on a late summer eve. The food totally saved the day. It was super fresh and absolutely delicious. Loved all of it. Had the chicken gyoza, the tempura sharing platter and the had a sushi and sashimi combo of tuna, prawns and salmon. Absolutely fabulous. Really five star food but couldn't give a five thanks to the bordering on rude service. The nicest member of staff was the lady that brought us our bill and took payment. At she was polite. Everything from the rice to the different types of soy sauce are homemade to perfectly balance and compliment each roll. With a selection of traditional rolls, specialty rolls and rolls specially designed by J2, you're sure to find a flavor that your heart desires. If you're not into multiple flavors and textures, they are serving up some delicious and fresh sashimi. If you don't like your fish raw, why not have it tempura style? I have passed this place so many times on the way home from work, literally walking right in front of the big glass windows on the quay side and never bothered to drop in. Today was different. Today I was craving sushi and had high expectations as I walked through the doorway. First off, I highly recommend this place to others looking for quality sushi in Dublin. I have been to a few sushi places now in Dublin (since moving here 7 months ago) but have not yet found that really special place. It is a little more on the pricey side compared to what i was accustomed to from the US, but the rolls are really well put together and they are not stingy on the tempera, avocado, crisps or any of the other delightful components which really bring this place to the next level. Walking in the doorway you are greeted with welcoming words and I found everyone working there to be extremely friendly, thoughtful and you get the sense that they really appreciate your business. Just some things that stood out to me that some other places do not always do from a service perspective - they offered to serve me Miso soup while I waited for my take out order (definitely nice to have a warm soup on a cold evening), they noticed that I had managed to spill some soup while eating/feeding my son and they brought more napkins with a smile, next as I was leaving they held open all the doors so that I could easily push the buggy out the door. Being right on the Quay side, you are literally between the Liffey and the main road and the views are spectacular. This would be a great place for lunch or dinner. read more
