Had a lovely evening here yesterday, where we got to take a step away from heavier meals and went for a lighter and a bit different approach of dining in Dublin. Overall the food was enjoyable! I absolutely loved the oysters. The mignonette was to die for and was a unique spin I hadn't had before. It felt like an oyster shooter, which made the value seem all the better. For our main course we split the sushi for two platter. It had sashimi, a few different roll options, and nigiri as well. The classics were great, and the rolls were interesting! The only thing I didn't love was the mayo on the tuna roll. Aside from the food, the service was a bit mixed. Everyone we interacted with was fantastic, but service was a bit slow and there had been items added on our bill that we didn't order. Easily fixed, but that took a bit more time. If you want a solid sushi dinner though, I definitely recommend eating here! read more

As a lover of all things Asian cuisine, I've very rarely gone more than a week or so without enjoying a delicious Asian entree. So it should come at no surprise that after 2 days of eating nothing but traditional Irish cuisine, my Asian food cravings started to set in. Walking down the streets of Dublin on a Wednesday night, we saw like 15 people enter the Ukiyo Bar at the same time and wondered what al the fuss was about, so we went in. I am so so glad that we did! The menu was priced perfectly for the quality and quantity of food you're served. The food was also super fresh! We ordered the Gyoza, the ramen and the kimchi fried rice. Every dish was jam-packed with fresh veggies and the perfect amount of spice. I was in heaven! Ordered a table sake and a Sapporo that were also really enjoyable. I would recommend Ukiyo Bar to locals and tourists in the Dublin area. Loved it! read more

I came here about 3 times, twice for lunch and once for dinner and karaoke. Ukiyo seems to be a mix of Asian cuisines as opposed to just Japanese, with Korean kimchi, Chinese dumplings and even a Burrito appearing on the menu among the sushi. In terms of lunch, the menu is quite limited compared to dinner and they don't have the wide selection if sushi, sashimi and sides available to order for lunch. The bento box lunch deal is pretty good which has a but of everything, but too much fried/ salty items that didn't taste very nice. I had the Chinese pork dumplings once for lunch which where really nice and filling, and another time I had a nigiri sushi and gyoza which were also pretty good. The variety of sushi available is much more limited than some of the other Asian restaurants in Dublin, but they do have great cocktails and sake (Japanese rice wine)! The service was good, the staff are very friendly and the atmosphere is nice. The karaoke is well.... if you have even been to karaoke in Japan or elsewhere, then you will very very disappointed. It's in a small cramped room downstairs and has only songs as old as Avril Lavigne's Skater Boy and Brittany Spears. I think even the Nintendo Wii fairs better. read more

This place gets packed even on weekdays so I'd recommend a reservation - we arrived at 7 on Wednesday night and waited about 30 minutes which wasn't all that bad. They have good bento deals (10 Euro!); the particular one I got had pork belly, squid tempura, salad, miso soup, California rolls and rice. The pork belly was delicious and the veggies were fresh. It was a HUGE serving and really worth the price. We also ordered the prawn gyoza to start - they're more steamed/boiled than fried. An order comes with 6 for 9.50 Euro which is a little on the pricier side. There's a pretty well stocked bar with a variety of cocktail choices :) The only disappointment was how long it took to receive the food - it was definitely because they were busy but the speed (or lack of) was noticeable. read more

Personally, karaoke isn't my thing but my workmates LOVE a bit of a sing a long so we ended up here on a Wednesday night. Now, I'd actually been here last time I was in Dublin too, but I'd forgotten to review it, so here goes. The ground-level is a bar area which has been dead both times I've been here. The bar staff are friendly and helpful, and will make you up a cocktail even if it's not on the list. Downstairs are the karaoke rooms and you can hire one or three and run between rooms seeing which songs are on (which is mostly what I do, to be honest). I feel like their machines are a bit out of date compared to other places I've been, but all up, the rooms are fun and comfortable, and it's a good laugh. I randomly went into this restaurant with my sister. Neithet of us were sure what it would be like but we were both pleasantly surprised. I really enjoyed this place when on a recent trip to Dublin - it's definitely a game of 2 halves if I'm allowed to use football metaphors in this review..(I am..Oh good...) A lovely little Japanese sushi bar upstairs with a large bar that's perfect for slumping at (my favourite type) and from here the bar staff were really friendly and knowledgable helping me choose a couple of local craft beers - one the pale ale and the other the stout (I feel a bit bad that I didn't drink a ml of Guinness on my trip but i did have enough craft porter and stout to make up for it which I think is ok...) Without you actually knowing this from looking in there are 2 large karaoke lounges downstairs which with it being a yelp team night out was of course obligatory to take part in :-) Gotta say I did enjoy singing 'Total eclipse of the heart' at full volume - definitely more than Survivor by Destiny's Child... I've been here for lunch and dinner a few times and am always pleasantly surprised. Great service, tasty sushi and a good value with the bento box. Two Sundays ago, we were strolling through town at about 4pm when we decided to stop for lunch. To our dismay nearly all the restaurants in the area were closing until dinner at 5. We walked into Ukiyo as a last try and were so happy to hear they were serving food all day. We both ordered the sushi bento box which had 12pieces, was very fresh and came with miso soup. We had to get the edamame as it's a must have with Japanese. We sat at the window with plenty of lovely sunshine and nice people watching. Ukiyo just oozes personality. First off you have a sushi bar, bachelorette parties and also a karaoke bar. Did I mention the food? I haven't even gotten that far yet. This is a very trendy place, and that also means it's not cheap. However, I don't think it matters. Quality and service are what matters, and on that front they absolutely deliver. Ukiyo is a fantastic little place. I had always been put off by the prices on the a la carte menu but then I noticed the price of their bento. It is dirt cheap at about ten euro for a pretty large amount of delicious food. They do kareoke in cool little booths downstairs too. They have a great playlist and the privacy of the booths make it much easier to belt out Total Eclipse of The Heart without having to worry about an audience of strangers. read more

Went into this place at lunch time. Beautiful decor and a wide open space as well as a very tall ceiling. Was a fan of the look & atmosphere overall. Grabbed the sushi bento box for €15 which is steep for a lunch all things considered but I must say I was very impressed. They first serve you a bowl of miso soup which was standard yet nice but the sushi selection brought afterwards was something else. It's presented beautifully on a large wooden tray and the fish was incredibly fresh. Each selection of sushi was perfectly put together. There was a huge amount, the €15 pricetag makes sense when you see it and the amount would easily fill you up for the day. The waiting staff were very friendly and one even offered to show me how to mix the wasabi & soy sauce which was very nice of him. I cannot vouch for the food at Ukiyo, simply because I haven't eaten there, but I can enthusiastically vouch for the quality karaoke experience there! This is karaoke, Japanese style. Ukiyo stores a cluster of rooms dedicated to the pursuit of ear-piercingly bad but thoroughly enjoyable karaoke. You can reserve a room exclusively for you and your mates to let loose on the karaoke machine. As if that wasn't enough, when you find yourself feeling thirsty, you can phone up to the bar with your drinks order. And yes, this telephone novelty does encourage over-enthusiastic ordering! I recommend that you don't book in for less than two hours - even if you and your friends are slow to start with, you will be fighting over the mic by the end. I have not eaten food here, in terms of the restuarna t part of this place i have only ever walked by and looked in the window at all the people munching away on their japanese food. What i have done is used the Karaoke rooms downstairs, its much cheaper than you would expect, about €25 for an hour which is enough ime o make a fool of yourself and then get comfortable enough for everyone to sing along together to the mulitude of tracks available! they will bring drinks down to you from the bar upstairs, the selection is very limited though as they favour japanese drinks in their bar, as you would expect them too! This is the only karaoke bar that I know of in Dublin so its always really busy, if your planning a trip here i would advise you to book early as all the good slots are usually gone before you know it! read more

There are a few people asking for money on the street which the staff are actively dealing with. Above the restaurant there are a number of private rooms where you can live out all your karaoke dreams, without the shame of strangers seeing you! Are you kidding me or what you ask ? You cannot give a five star rating, it is either a joke or a great place ! Well, I think you can figure it out by yourself. Indeed, Ukiyo is a great, an amazing place ! Do I have any particular interest in it such as a friend/relative running the business ? Not at all ! It is without any prejudice and with justice I decide to award the Ukiyo a five star. What is it about ? It is all about a modern Japanese restaurant. From the outside it looks like a private club. Once you get in, you feel like part of the elite. On the right hand side, the bar with an extraordinary choice of wines, spirits and cocktails. In front, a window to the kitchen run by a Japanese Chef. The rest of the room is made of a very simple wooden furniture. I usually sit to the left hand side with my best friend. We actually sat there the first time we went to Ukiyo, since then our names are caved in wood. Not litterally but the people from Ukiyo always remember our spot ! Who are they ? Dermot is an Irish guy. The sweetest person in the word ! He is so nice and helpful (when you don't remember the name of your favourite drink, such as the one with a raspberry on top). If you happen to go to Ukiyo, don't hesitate and ask for him ! Yohan is a French and handsome guy. He is the one who understands your needs without much explanation. Last time I wanted to drink a juice cocktail decorated with an umbrella. He didn't have any umbrella but put together some kind of out-of-space fruit arrangement I had never seen before ! Unsure about which wine to choose ? Go for him, he is THE expert of the house. Should I go further and talk about the other Ukiyo guys ? I don't think so. If you want to know some more, just go there ! What about the music ? I forgot to mention a few things. The music at Ukiyo is very modern. Unlike other Japanese restaurants, you can't fall asleep in your plate because of the slow paced and not so exciting music you hear in the background. Around 11 o'clock, tables and chairs disappear, and the music gets louder as the famous DJ Bubbles plays some of his trendy hits ! Another type of music, also very entertaining happens downstairs. If you go to the restroom, which might happen after a few drinks, you might go downstairs and hear people experiencing some highly exciting/crazy/sometimes very bad singing moments. Fortunately the booth are small and you can close the door so that people can hardly hear you. My best friend and I were there again last weekend and we had so much fun ! We now know some great duos and get ready for the X-Factor next year, well, I mean... maybe. Anything else to add ? Indeed there is something I would like to mention. I went to Ukiyo tonight, 10th July 2010, and I was happily suprised to see that they have renewed their karaoke installation ! So I heard this crazy rumor that Irish peeps don't like fish?!? Is this true?! Judging by the reaction of this one couple that was dining near us and that this fantastic sushi place was only filled with foreigners, I would say so. It was clear that this girl was trying to experience something different and made her boyfriend (who was built like a ox) come too. After a few bites and his angry increasingly rising (probably because he was hungry), he made it a point to loudly claim his dislike. Then the girl told him to quit and accidentally spilled her all over him, I thought he was going to break the table in half and that we would have to duck and cover. I don't think they will be coming back. As for the rest of us it was like heaven. Ukiyo sushi chefs are nothing short of talented and creative. Each bite was fresh and fulfilling. The staff is excellent, very quick, and very knowledgeable. The decor needs some work but it's comfortable. I also heard that they have karaoke rooms in the back. I really hope more people try Ukiyo, sometimes it's worth it to step out of one's own comfort zone and try something new. I know that if you're new to sushi it's hard figuring out what to order. So I recommend to following that were amazing. Caterpillar roll (no actual caterpillar) -Cucumber, Avocado, Asparagus. Topped with Avocado slices, and cream cheese which is optional. It's veggie and it won't kill you Spicy roll -Cucumber, Avocado & Prawn. Topped with a spicy Tuna or Salmon. Not too hot but hot enough and very tasty! Ninja roll -Cucumber, Avocado & Prawn. Ukiyo in Japanese translates as 'floating world', referring to the decadent artistic society that arose in 17th century Kyoto. While the Ukiyo Restaurant may not exactly live up to this romantic description, (it has frivolous and very fun karaoke booths downstairs) it certainly provides Japanese fare that is more than adequate. The menu, while not being the most extensive, offers a good range of Japanese - and some Chinese - dishes, as well as sushi. At lunchtime, my chosen time of eating, the restaurant was very quiet, and indeed I have never known it to be very busy, even at peak times. The restaurant is fairly plain, quite small and rather nondescript, with some half hearted wallpapering of Japanese posters here and there. I would recommend the lunchtime menu as it is rather more reasonable than the evening one - the bento box, which is what I opted for, is €10, compared to €15 after 7pm. The bento box is a very good deal, coming with some lovely miso soup, and a bowl of rice, which was sticky and authentic and significantly better than the dry, lukewarm rice that Wagamama serves. The bento box itself changes daily, and on this occasion it consisted of stir-fried glass noodles and vegetables, tempura mackerel, fried tofu and salad. The tempura mackerel was delicious, if a bit heavy given the fact that mackerel is a naturally oily fish. The noodles, too were rather greasy, but still tasty. The fried tofu was flavoursome, served with sesame seeds, and the salad was good if unexciting. While the portions that make up the bento box are quite well sized, and left me feeling satisfactorily full. My companion, who chose the Bul Go Gi, (€15.50) however, was rather disappointing, the meat being very salty and rather tough, to the point that it was mentioned to the waitress. The service is relaxed and friendly, and accommodated vegetarian changes to the bento box with a smile. The sake menu is definitely worth dipping into, featuring a good choice of hot and cold sake, as well as wine and Japanese beer. While the food is middle of the road, it is head and shoulders above the soulless and impersonal Wagamama, and probably on a par with the nearby Yamamori. However, I would attribute the latter comparison to the fact that the lunchtime bento box deal is indisputably good value for what you get. If you want some Japanese cusine in a more intimate, tucked away setting, followed by a sake-fuelled vocal exercise downstairs, than visit Ukiyo; which may not float gracefully but certainly does not sink. read more

Went here on the 25th with my girlfriend. I've been dabbling with Japanese food recently and she liked Wagamama we decided to go to a restaurant before we hit up a show. I remembered looking up Ukiyo a few weeks back and said to her, "I saw this place a while ago, it's on the way to Wagamama, wanna try it out?" She agreed so we head off. Ukiyo is located just off Georges street(Around the corner from the arcade) which is dead handy as the 27, 15 and the 16 all stop on Georges street. We went around and they had a dinner deal, two courses for €20 and three for €25. Grand! The bar itself was really quaint and cosy, all the tables had candles on them and came with a bottle of soy sauce and a pair of chop sticks on each side, I thought this was great as you only got a knife and fork if you requested. Out waitress was lovely, knew a fair bit about white wine and gave my girlfriend recommendations and samples of different wines. I stuck to the cucumber and mint water. The menu itself was very well laid out and had a large variety of Japanese dishes all at a reasonable price, however as we were sticking to the set menu we each ordered the chicken gyoza(dumplings) for starters and I had the Tofu steak for my main and my girlfriend had the Bi ba bap with beef(Rice bowl with mixed veg, fried egg and sliced beef served with two sauces) The chicken dumplings were fantastic. They came served with a dipping sauce each. We decided to use the chop sticks as long as we could and it was really fun. My tofu steak came served with mixed veg and another dipping sauce. I had to switch to a knife and fork as I couldn't pick up the damn things, my girlfriends beef dish according to her was fantastic, I had a piece of beef before she mixed it all up and I must say, fair play lads, it tasted great. We finished up with a sashimi sushi platter that came with three pieces of tuna and three pieces of salmon and a small bowl of rice and a piece of wasabi. I love sushi and her...not so much. The tuna was beautiful, didn't try the salmon as I'm not much of a fan anyways. All and all, the two set dinners, glass of wine and the sushi platter came to €58.50. And I have to say, for such a nice spot, fantastic service and a lovely ambiance not to mention for our first candle lit dinner, I got excellent value for money. Plus I read that they also do karaoke. Holy shit, the gift that keeps on giving. I would not hesitate to go again, and would say to anybody who likes Wagamama to try it out, they might not have ramen, but bloody hell they set a high standard for the next time I eat out for Japanese food. read more

The only thing was that the room got really hot after awhile, the aircon wasn't really working and the little fan only cooled one person standing in front at a time. Mmh, this is a tricky one... So we went on a Monday, and the restaurant was 1/2 to 3/4 full. That's usually a good sign. Now, they only have about ten tables so its not a massive operation and you'd expect service to be excellent. And I think that's the problem that I have with this place, the service was mediocre at best e.g. we ordered a beer and a hot sake while we were waiting for a friend to arrive and I could see my beer standing on the counter for a while, while the sake was being heated up. Then when the sake was finished it took another couple of minutes for the drinks to arrive at the table. As a result we had a coldish beer and a warmish sake, which annoyed me a bit. They then took our orders and the waiter scribbled them down on the back of a receipt of another table, after he realizes that we would order too much for him to remember. LOL The food then took quite a bit to arrive while other guests who had arrived later got theirs before us. The sushi itself was nice, a special shout out to my dragon roll which had what looked like a whole eel on top of it!! Thumbs up on that. Another odd thing was the lack of wasabi and dipping bowls for soy sauce. We asked for more wasabi and it only arrived when we had two pieces of sushi left. Overall I have to say that I was less than impressed and will probably not be coming back. The sweet potato based marinated noodle dish I tried this time was good, with well cooked and tasty beef and a little spiciness. As a starter the tempura haddock was light, fresh and very tasty. My partner was not as impressed with the sushi as last time, but that may have been down to the bento selection that day not suiting her tastes quite as well. Similarly, although my noodles were very nice, they were not as good as the Bi Bim Bap on my previous visit. The service was more attentive and that was the reason for losing a star the last time. I really like this place. It is in the perfet location, its cool, but not too much so, it does decent japanese food & cocktails & has great windows for watching life outside. Ended up here lastweek when we were too late for a dinner reservation close to it and they welcomed us with open arms here. Some of the cocktails are hit & miss, it can get loud with an odd crowd on a Friday & Saturday night. But its quirky, personal and has great space between tables for intimate chats outside of the Friday/Saturday night time. read more
