I live right down the street and dropped in around 2:45 PM today hoping to have a quiet drink to honor a family member who recently passed away. I completely understand and respect carding policies--I've worked in the service industry for ten years myself, and as a professional, I can distinctly tell the difference between someone doing their job and someone trying to humiliate a customer. The behavior from the daytime bartender (wearing a blue shirt) was completely out of line. When I initially couldn't locate my ID, I politely told him I lived nearby and would be right back. He hit me with a sarcastic, "Oh yeah, I'm sure you will." When I found my ID in a different pocket of my wallet a moment later and handed it over, he proceeded to make a massive public spectacle of it, holding it up to the light, aggressively scratching it, and flicking it in front of the entire bar top and nearby tables. Feeling humiliated and uncomfortable, I politely declined to order and opted to leave. Instead of letting it be, he called me back to the bar, demanded my ID again, and then refused to give it back to me while interrogating me about whether it was fake or expired (it is neither). I had to ask for my own identification back multiple times before he finally relinquished it. There is a world of difference between being vigilant with ID checks and actively power-tripping, harassing a customer, and withholding personal property. To management: I strongly encourage you to review the security footage from today, July 22nd, at approximately 2:45 PM (I was the guy with long hair in a white shirt). This was completely unacceptable behavior. As a neighbor, I wanted this to be my local spot, but I won't be returning. read more

Been wanting to try this iconic tavern and finally popped in during move in weekend. This is your neighborhood joint where everybody knows your name. Friendly service, solid pub grub, free parking. From driving by, I didn't realize minors could dine here but there is a family friendly section in the back. Overall, we were impressed and will definitely be back! - our server, Abby was very welcoming, friendly and such a delight. - the menu was extensive for what looked like a hole in the wall tavern. - mozzarella sticks were light and crispy! (Im typically not a fan but I loved these) - Reuben was thick, hot and flavorful - crinkle fries were perfectly crispy (I'm typically not a fan of crinkle fries either) - free parking in the lot or nearby street parking I'll definitely be back! Guests, truly be beware! Especially those who are younger and female, please be cautious. I had entered this bar, excited too for my friend who was joining me moments later. I was received with a fairly cold welcoming by a bartender named Blake as I sat at the bar rail and he proceeded to asked for my ID. For pretense, I am a 26-year female with an enhanced Washington State ID which has been in my possession for over four years now. Blake took my ID and needed several minutes to verify it. After staring it with zero movement for a minute, he then used a black light to inspect the hidden details for even longer. Since it was still too challenging for him to distinguish the ID, he decided to show two random older men at bar, who are clearly drinking, to aid him in verifying lol. Attached to this review is an image of the unexpected incident. I do not know these older men, and for Blake to be displaying my personal information to them, including my full government name and home address, especially while in my sight of vision is beyond levels of unprofessionalism. This is also an incredibly obvious safety concern. While immensely uncomfortable and disappointed this moment just occurred, Blake appears to me and tells me he's not comfortable serving me, assuring me that my ID is fake. As someone who's worked in the service industry, I've been put in similar situations before with fake IDs. For me to come in alone at first, I also completely understand the possibility of a sting operation occurring with the Washington liquor control board. However, I've never experienced a bartender with such a substantial lack of knowledge and understanding for valid ID verification. Calling Blake uneducated on the subject would be considered an understatement lol. When I questioned why he didn't accept my ID, he proceeded to state that "They just started coming out with enhanced licenses, so there's no way you would have an enhanced ID for that long now" LMAO. I can only assume he was referring to the "Real IDs" that are required now for flight travel. He then mentioned that the hidden emblems on the ID under black light weren't glowing right, that the ID didn't feel right, and that my picture looked nothing like me. (???) My friend who joined me moments later asked him to compare her two valid IDs, which felt the exact same as mine, and he said hers most definitely felt real! She's also worked service industry for a long time so we both got a real kick out of this tbh. From my guess I can only assume he was highly anxious thinking it was a sting operation, and when realizing he was wrong, chose to double down instead of holding himself to accountability and integrity. Or Blake's management failed poorly to educate their employee on proper protocol, ranging from actually knowing how to validate ID, to exerting actual professional, kind, and quality customer service to begin with. Darn shame. To have someone severely uneducated in ID verification working in a college bar sounds like underage drinking is inevitable, and that the liquor control board should be more deeply involved. Unfortunately, Blake is not the only one in this situation lacking both accountability and integrity. I spoke with owner of the bar, Kevin Macdonald, over the phone. When I mentioned the issue to him, he supported Blakes actions and behavior. He did say he would speak to Blake about enhanced IDs at least. Kevin showed complete lack and disregard in safety concerns towards Blake showing random men my personal information, stating "it was probably just a manager or something". Do managers drink on the clock here? If you decide to attend this bar, make sure to bring multiple forms of identification, and to be prepared for your home address to be shared with random drunk old men. Hopefully and God-willing this review finds some readers and guides them away from this unprofessional establishment. Based on reading the multitude of other negative reviews left before mine, looks like Kevin is doing a great job of that anyway. read more

We had an older lady check our IDs when we walked in. She checked my friend's ID and told her "You looked a lot better with dark hair," because her hair in her ID photo is slightly darker than it is now. Small place, but they have two pool tables, 1 dartboard, 1 pinball table, 1 jukebox, pull tabs, some outdoor seating, and several tv's where you could catch your favorite game. Realistically, the one knock I have is probably for the managers or owners: I respect the tried-and-true sellers.. But if you're a craft beer fan, the selection is a bit lackluster. Looking for IPAs, they have only SpaceDust on draft. I would love to see a rotating local or regional handle or two - Lumberbeard, Brick West, Humble Abode, For the Love of God, YaYa, Bale Breaker, etc.. Ok.....this place was my nephew's pick. He attends Gonzaga. Good pick Zach!!! Awesome bar food. My wife and I had the chicken Caesar salad which was pretty good. No croutons though. My nephew scarfed down his Reuben which looked really really good. Mom had the halibut fish and chips that were quite yummy. Decent beer selection as well as the usual bar food menu but with little yummy extras like tomatoes on your Caesar salad. Our server Gina was awesome!!!! Service is not worth a visit. Met some friends at this establishment for early evening meet up. Sat down at the bar and waited over 10 minutes before we had to flag someone down who was willing to take our drink order. There was only 2 tables occupied at the time and only one other person at the bar aside from us while 4 bartenders were seen behind the bar. Drinks were finished, never once were we asked to refill our drinks or asked if we wanted to order food. We left after being accused of speaking poorly about one of the bartenders. If you aren't young, hot, or a regular, don't bother here. We were not welcomed. read more

Jack & Dan's has a long standing reputation in the Gonzaga district. It is THE place to see and be seen! Service here has always been top notch until yesterday. There a clearly new staff on board. The once peppy and attentive staff donning neck ties have been replaced with staff that can't be bothered with service. I was very unimpressed with the service my team received yesterday (4/4/2023). On at least two occasions, one of my guests had to approach the bar to get another drink. Empty glasses and dishes were not cleared until we had to ask for our tab. Not business as usual at Jack & Dan's. I hope Ed reads this and makes the necessary adjustments quickly! read more

First time in Jack & Dan's and it did not disappoint. Met up with a group of friends for drinks after work and the service was outstanding. There were seven of us and our server kept track of who ordered what and remembered what drinks we had. When we ordered food, she didn't have to write anything down and the food was delivered to the person that ordered it. When it came to pay, we all had separate checks and there were no mistakes even with one person mentioning that they would purchase the first round. I believe our server was Alexi and she had awesome customer service skills. Food was decent, not exceptional but it was not greasy like a lot of pub food. Made a reservation at Jack and Dans 6 days in advance for 14 people. The gal said that Ed handled the reservations and IF there was any problem that he would call me back. I called back 2 days before the event (my birthday party) just to double check that I had the reservation. Was told that I had NO reservation. Unless Ed calls you back you don't really have one ! Don't play pull tabs here!!! I was playing a $.50 game, no big winners were paid and I didn't get anything big, ($10 was the biggest I won) but approx 4,000 tabs out of the 6,000 were sold. So the odds were In the patrons favor. I played $60 and was going to put another $20 into it. The bar tender said nope can't do it, "the manager is pulling the game" WTF!! That's bad customer service to pull a game while someone is playing. I'll never eat, drink or step foot in this place. Btw the food is not that good. read more

What a fun place! Being in Spokane on business, I naturally had to seek out Jack & Dan's as loyal Utah Jazz fan. The sports programs in Salt Lake have done features on this place, and I always wanted to see what it was actually like. The menu was great, and when I asked the server what she would recommend the beer battered shrimp or the fish & chips, she just had the cooks combine them into one plate and was really attentive to me while I ate making sure I had everything that I needed and that I never saw an empty glass on the table...refills aplenty! The atmosphere is fun, TVs on the walls at every turn...friendly patrons who heard me mention I was from Utah and a Jazz fan came over and started a conversation. The service was great, and the food was awesome. If my business ever requires me to come back to Spokane, I'd visit this place again without question. Overall experience was excellent, and I'd recommend Jack & Dan's as a place to get good food, or grab some friends and sit at the bar from some drinks and conversation. read more

I see this bar on a daily and stopped by one evening to check it out. It is an older bar but it was very clean. I went on an evening on a weekday and there was only one bartender who was taking orders for people sitting at the bar and at the surrounding tables. Even though the bartender was doing it all he was supper attentive and regularly checked up on us. I expected there to be a few televisions but there was only a couple so it is definitely not a bar I would recommend if you wanted to go to a bar to have a drink and watch a game. read more

Here is my rant about Jack&Dans: This little shit hole is the most high and mighty piece of crap I've ever been to. "Oh, Im John Stockton's Dad, therefore I have a top ESPN bar." FU John Stockton's dad. The only reason your little bar is famous is b/c of your son. Now, here is where I get upset... "We Support GU!" By having: NO happy hour NO student discounts NO cheap food About the only way they support students is by hiring them as bar tenders. "We're a Top ESPN bar" Wow, did anyone from ESPN ever come to J&Dans? Ok, it gets a good crowd for the GU games, but really its because its the ONLY decent bar within walking distance of the Kennel. Yes, it IS a decent bar. But it is not ESPN top bar worthy. The beers are ok. Hard A is WAY overpriced for a "student friendly" bar. $6 for a vodka cran?? Really? Where am I, Santa Barbara? Oh wait, no, because they only charge $2 to $3 bucks for wells in SB! Jerks...Actually, now that I think about it, pretty much EVERY bar has at least a happy hour where they charge $2-$3 bucks on wells. NOT $6! Not to mention the what...like 6 tvs? I know that may SOUND like alot, but its not. And they are small for a "sports" bar. The food is really nothing special, though edible. I'd pass up the spaghetti and get the quesadilla. The quesadilla is actually the best deal in the whole joint b/c its tasty and big. The owner told me he didn't need a happy hour b/c his beer is priced well all day. Well, it still isn't really cheap enough for my school loans and I don't like drinking cheap ass beer all day. If I want to chug Kokanee I'll go to Friday's and get $1 beers. Oh? Whats that? Oh yeah, its called a Happy Hour. Novel idea for a bar, I know. Now before you call me debbie-downer, Yes I have had fun at this bar. But not b/c it was J&Dans. I had fun because I was drinking with my friends and there were very few creepy spokies to annoy us. Yes, it IS the best bar near GU, but that DOESN'T MAKE IT A GOOD BAR! It's over priced and over snooty for what it is. So here is a BIG FU to GU's fav. bar! FU and that basketball you bounced in on. I would actually like this place if they weren't so hypocritical and just fessed up to being an overpriced bar because they can be. We had a bar like that back in IV and people still enjoyed it. But it didn't pretend to be a student friendly bar. Everyone knew it was overpriced but went because it was close. Well, that's Jack and Dan's. Overpriced, but close. Now for the reasons I didn't give it 1 star. - The bartenders will make you a good drink and can make you yummy custom shots. - They do carry a decent variety of beer for the basic beer drinker. Any real beer drinker will not be impressed. You know who you are ;) - If you are looking to hook up with an overdressed 19yr...*cough* I mean, 21 yr old then this is your place on the weekends! - it sadly IS the nicest bar next to GU - If you go during the day it is a chill comfortable environment, as long as you can get over the hypocritical messages unlike me I've never talked fondly of this place. My friends never understood. But they were also very eager to get smashed. Once my friend and I went just for a casual beer and she realized just how crappy and overpriced the bar was as well. Now she doesn't like going anymore either. I didn't even have to say anything on that trip. Geez, I'm still tempted to give 1 star but I think that is just too low b/c its not the Star Bar. Everyone usually has all their teeth. In my opinion, try to go downtown or something instead. OR! Even better, if you are some multi-millionaire looking for a new hobby, buy the Bull Dog across the street, clean it up a little, put in some big screen Vizios from Costco, add a happy hour, and put on some top 40 on the weekends and you should have most of J&D's business within in a week. read more

I rang in 2010 at this bar and it was fine. The guys were toothless and the girls didn't stand there hating on each other. Everyone just kept to themselves and had nice, clean fun. I once drank here with my parish priest and a few of my 8th grade classmates. Don't get the wrong idea --- none of us were in the 8th grade anymore (post college actually) and the only racy thing the priest did was buy a pitcher of beer (can I help it if that sets my heart aflutter?). Being near GU, you'd think Jack & Dan's would get more of a college crowd, but I guess they go to The Bulldog instead b/c the crowd here is older (as in, my dad goes for beers here sometimes). Maybe it's the Gonzaga Alumni/Booster Club bar? It is a good place to watch a Zags game (or be a Zags fan in general). The bartender is always nice. I can't comment on the food --- I was surprised to learn they serve it (probably b/c I've only been in the "bar" part and not the "grill" part). I'd give it a solid 3 stars, but the booths in front by the windows bring it up to a full 4 stars. I like drinking in sunlight. read more

I want to write bad about this place, I really do, but I've got some fond memories of the place prior to their renovation. Selling hot dogs to people out in front of the bar and getting free beer from the bartenders. Sneaking into the bar through the back door and then hanging out in what seemed like a cavern. Running into the old crusty drunks whenever you came into the bar during the afternoon. They were not very happy people, but I guess you couldn't be if you were drinking that early. Drinking for free after the bar closed because the Mike Wall was closing the bar down that night. I guess I could go on and on about the good times I had there, but there are the bad times too. They kicked the hot dog stand out from their location because they now had a "restaurant", drinks were a little more expensive then the Star or the Bulldog, and it got stupid busy most weekend nights. Why has there not been another bar that's opened up around GU, is there a moratorium on building another one (like 3 bars within a mile radius of a Catholic school is all it can take)? read more

Sweetie and I wanted to have the tavern experience so we went over to Jack and Dan's Tavern near Gonzaga University. Some of the locals were around for the girls basketball team was going to have an inter squad game at GU's McCarthy Center in an hour or so. We sat at the bar, had a couple of draft beers, talked with some locals, and had a good time. When it came close to the starting time for the basketball game, off we went to McCarthy Center for the game. The Gonzaga kid's choice dispensary, especially for the Blue Moon pitcher special on Thursdays. Basically, the atmosphere is blah (2 stars), drink options are basic (3 stars), too many undergrads (0 stars), but all of your friends come here so you better get your ass here too. I've met people I wouldn't have run into otherwise from school and cemented good friendships here, so I guess it isn't too bad, right? They have their own parking lot otherwise residential parking nearby isn't tough at all. read more

Although you'll usually find a loyal group of old timers in here, it's primarily a college hang out. I used to come here back in my single drinking days but stopped going once I hit 23. The crowd was a little...annoying. Of course, I doubt it changed...I had just gotten old and more accustomed to nice quiet bars! The food here is pretty good...it's bar food. I've had a great burger and fries a few times. The nachos aren't bad, either. I kept hoping that I'd run into John Stockton but no such luck! read more
