The secretary called and wanted to know if they came a day early was ok which was fine with me. Bill and James showed up early also. I usually do pretty much all my own work but do not like working on the roof and tall ladders. It always refreshing to see people who know what they are doing which seams to be a rarity these days. Do NOT call this guy. This was one of the most bizarre interactions I have ever had. This man is hostile, gruff and unprofessional. I would even go so far as to say that he might no be safe to have in your home. I called this business about two weeks ago and spoke to a very nice young woman to inquire about getting my gas fireplace cleaned along with a maintenance check. I also told her I wanted Jack to check my remote because it didn't seem to be working. She told me that it was a busy time but that was no problem. We set an appointment for about ten days later. On the morning of the service visit I got a call from Jack asking, "Do we have an appointment today?" I confirmed and he told me he'd be over in a few minutes. He arrived shortly and I showed him in. I work from home right now and was just starting an online meeting. Jack did not have a toolbox or anything that resembled stuff that would be used to clean a gas fireplace. I wasn't alarmed at first because I was working and only glancing up periodically. I figured he knew what he was doing. Fast forward about fifteen minutes, Jack is standing next to me and told me he was all done. I looked down at the fireplace, literally six feet away from me and I saw that the fireplace hadn't been cleaned. I reminded him that I called to have it cleaned and he told me I could "just vacuum it." I said, "Oh, I don't really have the special tools to get in there." He just brushed me off and started heading for the door. I stopped what I was doing and reminded him that I wanted him to check the remote, which I picked up and was holding in my hand to show him. He didn't even look at it. He went out to his truck and brought in a new, different remote. I then asked for a manual because I don't know how to use it and I had only just moved to my house and have never had a gas fireplace before. He went back out to get a manual and brought it back in. I thanked him, while at the same time feeling a bit confused, uncomfortable, and also still supposed to be on my work meeting. I asked for the fee and he told me to call his office later that afternoon and pay with a credit card or a check. He told me it would be $347 and then he left. No invoice, no cleaning, nothing. This remote was completely different from the one that was replaced so I looked it up online after my meeting and discovered that it retailed for $145. Needless to say, I was a bit taken aback. Was the $347 for the remote? Because otherwise, my fireplace was not serviced or cleaned. I called the office after my work meeting and left a message. A few hours later I received a call back from the very kind assistant and told her what had happened. Out interaction was very easygoing and respectful. She was as helpful as she could be, but also seemed confused about what to do. I told her I was going to return the remote. She said no problem but wanted to check in with her boss to inquire. She called me back and said that I could just return the remote at their office. She explained that the remote was extra because of taxes and shipping. She did not have an answer as to why the fireplace was not cleaned or tuned up. A few hours later my roommate drove over to the office and went in to drop off the remote. However, Jack was still out on the road, t and had not returned to the shop with the sensor to my fireplace, which I had no idea he had. His assistant DID know though. I did not watch Jack's every move while he was at my house so I did not see him switch out the sensors. In order for the new remote to work, he had to take that step. I don't know why he would take it from my house though, since it belongs to me. In any event, the assistant told my roommate that Jack would drop it off in my mailbox at the end of the day. In the meantime, I had texted Jack that I spoke to his assistant and confirmed that I was returning the remote. He replied with an angry text message using profanity and telling me that this has never happened to him before and that I was returning a "used remote", which is obviously absurd, since I literally had it in my possession for about six hours and never touched the thing. I have saved the text as it is aggressive and it made me very concerned that this guy might be a loose cannon. Unfortunately, the sensor was never returned. I waited nervously for him to pull up and drop it off but he never did. The next morning, I looked in my mailbox and learned that the sensor was not there. I told my roommate about the situation and he decided to text Jack to ask where the sensor was. Jack wrote back in about thirty minutes and stated that he will return the sensor when I gave him $150, cash only. My fireplace was neither tuned up nor was it cleaned. Jack repaired a leak in our chimney flashing last summer and guaranteed it wouldn't leak. With all this severe NE weather we haven't had one drop of water. Jack is a true professional and know his trade. I would recommend Jack for all your masonry repairs and new construction. Ron R. read more

Jack Hill came in and measured the opening of the fireplace wrong, so we came home to a non working gas stove with a big opening over the stove. We had to pay for the new surround and he said they ate $ 100; keep in mind he measured the opening WRONG. The weekend was going to be in single digits and the installer showed up the next day but left without installing the new surround. Spoke with office who had no idea why they surround was not installed. Furthermore the office when asked about the balance said "this is the balance which includes plumbing" repeatedly, she is no longer there. My wife did not sign it even though she repeatedly this document does not state what either you or Jack Hill quoted. After numerous unanswered emails to their Office, jack leaves a voice mail. When speaking with him he now denies the price included the gas hook up by the plumber. He insisted he never said that and proceeded to LIE BECAUSE THATS WHAT HE DOES!!! So apparently his inefficient service is $800 more than other locations that sell gas or any type of stove who do a better job, precise and honest. Jack Hill is a liar and will not get a cent more than what he quoted! Do not call this sorry excuse of a businessman for anything. Go to the Fireplace Connection where we should have gone in the first place, but we wanted to give the business to a local shop! BIG MISTAKE!! read more

Disappointed in service. Initially, Jack came back in the winter to service my gas fireplace. Said he would follow up with some work in spring. I know pandemic hit, so he told me to be patient. I waited until August. He finally came to install new blower in stove. I paid him on the spot. I asked for invoice. When I emailed him, he answered " I have to find it,give me time." Finally received invoice with no model and type of blower. When sending invoice he tried to charge me extra for some work he said he did when here that he never mentioned when being paid! Very poor demeanor when doing work. Sorry to write such a poor review, but thought I should let others know. read more

Just had Jack Hill's crew come in "" do maintenance check", on two gas stoves. One is a Mandoka 48" fireplace. The tech didn't know how to open the glass or vents to access the fire box. He used a shopvac to clean out the fan and wires under the fire box. That was it. I not only had to assist with the opening and closing of the fireplace but supply fire rock; assist and instruct in proper placement over heater bar of fire rock. The second stove, a Jotul, they just vacuum the blower. Washed the outside vent. Finished!! Did not open the stove at all. I call Jack Hill, waiting for his call to tell him the events that happened. Plus I'm waiting on the bill! Not worth calling Jack Hill. If this the best they can do. I'm definitely going back to August West. read more

I live right on the ocean on Lighthouse Point, Scituate, MA - the "rock stars" of the weather channel whenever there is an ocean storm. On the ocean side of my house, I have a wood stove and the chimney was leaking. Jack Hill put in a new pitched roof flashing, replaced a rotten pipe section, and resealed the asphalt shingles. Through all of the storms that we had this season, which were a lot, there wasn't one leak - not one drop of water - from the stove pipe that he repaired last fall. He did an excellent job at a very fair price. I had a few other estimates and his was the best by far. I can't say enough about the great job he did for me. read more

I have a 15 year old Yotul gas insert stove. I live on the windy Bay. On the coldest days, when I really want a warm stove, it won't light due to the downdraft. When the electricity goes out because of the wind, I can't stay warm because the stove won't light. Folks from August West looked at it and said, "Yes, that's a problem for folks on the Bay." Jack Hill came over today, and when the stove wouldn't light because of the wind, he showed me a little trick, and the stove fired right up. Told him on the phone think my thermostat on gas fire place wasn't working, sends out repair person to tell me my thermostat isn't working at cost of 85.00, talked to jack later in day to set up a repair between 1-3, no show called office and said I never called him, told him couldn't take another day off then he tells me I was taking off for my wife any way, so if I never talked to him how did he know I was taking the day off, kiss that 85 bucks good bye and fix it myself like i was go to do. read more
