Mavis in Kingston, PA changed brake pads for me today. They were very professional, up until they added a ridiculous $10.04 for "shop supplies" to change brake pads, and was not in the quote I was given. Actually, although I asked for a quote on changing brake pads, the guy initially quoted me a price for pads and rotors, until I questioned why it was $578 for brake pads. Im certain they would have either not changed them and charged me, or changed rotors that were perfectly fine. I informed him that it doesn't need rotors. They also added a brake sensor for $11.99, which they didn't quote me on, but I knew they'd have to replace, so I had no issue with that. They didn't inform they were going to do it, but again, I expected it. I have done many brake jobs in my life time, and what should have taken half an hour, took over two hours. Again, I didn't complain about how long it took. The kid that did the brakes, also damaged the lug nuts on my truck, also, I didn't complain about that, because we all learn sometime, and he was obviously (we were able to watch some of what he was doing) new. So when I realized they added the charge, I called and asked them to refund it, I was politely told that they would not. So they charged me $276.64 just to change brake pads, and my main complaint was that they tried to rip me off by adding rotors to the quote, and adding a $10.04 charge, that they slipped in at the end, which they said is added to every job. I can assure you that they didn't use $10.04 in shop supplies to change brake pads. But if you quote me a price, you shouldn't sneak in extra charges. OMG Where do I start? When I began testing my car air conditioner in recent weeks, it was clear it was not working. This was disappointing because I had a new air conditioner compressor installed in my car only two years before. In the past I had had repairs done in Jack Williams in Kingston and I had been satisfied. So this past Monday I took it there again. Things did not get off to a good start and went very much downhill from there. I took it in and asked if they could take a quick look at what the problem was, so we could schedule my returning on a particular day to make the repair. I said a quick look. They could have said that was not going to work, but they said sure, no problem. Over an hour later I enquired where things were. The car was all hooked up to the diagnostic equipment and it was in the process of being tested. But why didn't you tell me it would take so long? Well, the mechanic had to finish up on another car before he could do yours. Why didn't you tell me that, too? The situations were all reasonable, but they needed to have been stated up front so that a plan could be developed that better fit the circumstances. In the end they did not finish testing the car; they had to put it back together so I could leave. They did say it looked like it just needed charging and freon. On Thursday I took the car in for the diagnostic and repair. After a couple of hours the young man who is in charge told me that the compressor needed to be replaced ($1000) and the lines going to it also replaced ($500). I was appalled. He said the compressor could be delivered that day, but the lines would not arrive until the following day. I said I would return the next day. They had to reassemble the car so I could leave. On Friday I returned at 8:30 am, left the car with them for the day and went to my job. At 3:30 the young man called. They had just called to ask about the lines, and they were told they would not be delivered until the next day. WHAT??? I needed the car to drive to my home two hours away--I could not just take an uber home and return Saturday. He began realizing what a disaster this was. He said he would need an hour and a half to put the car back together. I was even more unhappy, as I had finished work already. He said I wasn't being reasonable, because putting the car back together just took the time it took. Why hadn't they gotten on the ball about the delivery of those lines earlier? If they had discovered the delivery wouldn't be that day, they could have started putting back my car together earlier. I started thinking that despite Jack Williams' acceptable work in the past, I really did not want to work with this repair shop anymore. I would spend the weekend calling around to other repair shops to do the air conditioner. However, he had a surprise for me when I arrived. His mechanic had put in the new compressor and had used my existing lines. Oh, so that means I only owe you $1000? No because they had to put freon in and there were some miscellaneous little things, so the bill was just a few dollars short of $1,500. Where do I start with that? The presumption was that the lines were so bad that they warranted my spending $500 on new ones--only suddenly they were acceptable after all. Indeed he had said earlier that the car would need new freon, but when he had listed the things they needed to do and given me a price, he had not mentioned the freon. You are not supposed to forget something that will cost the client over $300. There was yet something else. One reason I had gone ahead with purchasing the compressor from him was that it came with a warranty, which he believed--he said this in a confident tone--was for three years. The receipt I got from him did not mention the warranty. I told him I was not leaving unless I had the warranty in writing. He had to call the company he bought it from, and they referred him to a website. It took twenty minutes before he had a document for me that stated the warranty was good for two (not three) years or 24,000 miles. He had not said anything about mileage bringing the warranty to an end. I put 24,000 miles on my car every year--the warranty is going to be worthless to me. I had yet another surprise. I asked if his shop was still affiliated with Jack Williams. No, Mavis Tires had bought out the whole Jack Williams enterprise. They must have bought the name as well, because the name "Jack Williams" was to be found everywhere. At every point, their performance was a day late and a dollar short. They didn't tell me things they should have, they didn't plan for things ahead of time, that they were sloppy about listing the things to be done, and things that should have occurred to them (like that I'd want a written warranty) did not. At this point I question whether they were even honest in saying I needed a new $1,000 compressor. read more

I recently had my yearly car inspection done at Jack Williams and was thoroughly impressed with the service I received.

Appointments are not honored. I made an appt TWICE to have my car inspected, and BOTH times they said the inspector was double booked. It should not take 2 to 3 hours to get a car inspected and an oil change. And if they are double book at 8 a.m., pushing me later won't resolve the double-booked inspections scheduled AFTER me. There is no store/branch manager to report this to, and nobody will come talk to me. They DON'T care. read more

my car drove fine before I got my tires rotated, afterwards, there was a slight vibration during braking, within a short period, it became much more noticeable . Went to the dealership and had it looked at, since it only had 15k on the ODO and was basically new. 3 lug nuts had to be cut off to remove the wheels. warped rotors as well, dealership claimed Mavis techs used improper torque on the lug nuts, which warped rotors. Mavis claimed it wasn't their fault.. Won't be going back to Mavis ever again after this and they are nothing like Jack Williams was. I'm shocked they can even use his name, and kind of felt something was up when the lot and store was empty of customers in the Kingston PA store, something I've never seen at that location in 40 years.. read more

Very friendly and good service. I brought my company car in because it had two tires with slow leaks. They already had their tire guy working on another car but they had me out of their in 40 minutes. They fixed one tire and installed a new tire for the other. They took care of everything with our fleet company which made it an easy transaction. BEWARE! They will try to do work to your car that is not needed. I took my car there to be inspected, they told me it did not pass because there was a broken strut and the brake pads and rotors were worn out. They wanted to charge me $1,700.00 for the repairs. I chose to do the repairs myself with a family member who happens to have a certified state inspector license. We did the repairs (for a fraction of the cost they were going to charge) and noticed the pads and rotors looked fine. We measured them to find out the pads were at 6 32nds (passing is 2 32nds or greater). The rotors were 1.16 (passing is .924 or greater). I confronted both the mechanics and garage supervisor and was told it's at the inspectors discretion due to rust and minor pitting on the edge of the pad contact point. The mechanic who performs the inspection told me he would have passed the brakes if it were up to him. The manager told me they stand by the decision, and have a nice day. I will be reporting them the appropriate agency. Again. BEWARE. read more

Kingston location: picked out a set of American Racing (ar907) wheels - my initial visit went well w the associate demonstrating lots of patience as I made my decision on the wheel model. Took a few days to come in, they stayed in touch with me for installation process to keep me posted. Packaged up my original rims in the boxes the ar907's came in and stowed them nicely in the cargo space. Cost were in line with other automotive accessory stores that I researched prior to my purchase. I was miffed that the new shiny rims were attached to grungy/dirty tires. I know the tires were the original ones from the OEM rims that I was replacing with the ar907 rims but I would have thought the tech would have ran a rag with cleaning solution around the tires that were being flip-flopped and a light coat of tire shine to make the new rims pop. The vehicle being a 2018 Explorer with only 1000 miles on it are new tires, just seems to me that that it would have been a no brainer. I was charged a "shop materials" fee of $20 as well as a "dismount/remount/balance" fee of $24.95 per wheel. Hmm. read more

This is the last time I will buy tires from them. I spent over $600 for tires. They had a 50k mile warranty. They lasted 30k miles. The sales person said that 30k was pretty good. What? I asked him: I should just buy tires with a 30k warranty next time. His response: Then you will get 10k miles on them. What?!!!!! What is the mileage warranty for anyway? I'm just buying used tires from now on. They will cost me a $100. Even if they last for 1 year, it will be a better bargain than buying from these guys. Tire suppliers are such a scam! Jack Williams really helped me out! They checked out tires I had installed in another state and gave me a recommendation for a better air pressure to keep the tires inflated to. They were the only place in the area to have the speedometer recalibrator I was looking for and offered to do it for me. On top of all that, the salesperson who helped me was set to leave for the day but stayed to help me get my vehicle all set up before I was leaving on a 400 mile trip! Seriously if you need anything auto related especially tires go anywhere else in the area, ANYWHERE ELSE!! Called and made an appointment at 1PM. Dropped it off and was asked about an alignment. Was told they would call before an alignment was done and I said OK because I don't know for sure if I want to spend the extra money on that. At 4 PM called them and they said oh we haven't got to your car yet. Got a call 5 minutes before 6 and was told the car was done. Went and got it and sure enough they billed me for an alignment. I said I was specifically told I would get a call and they said well we are short handed and can't make calls. I said so you decided to charge me for something without my OK. They said well if we called you what would your answer have been??? I said I don't know because you didn't call and told me you would so I didn't have the opportunity to say yes or no. They then said well sorry we can't do anything we closed the transaction?? Then I said on top of that it was 5 hours to get tires with no call, again he (I'm assuming the manager) said we are short handed. He then proceeded to tell me how there's 6 work orders they didn't get to and people have to wait days for work to get done??? Why is that something I need to know. I took cars here in the past and had good experiences. Recently, I don't know what's happened to them. They keep encouraging my grandmother, an 89 year old woman, to dump hundreds (the last time over $1,000) on her 21 year old car. She says someone there told her it was worth 'a lot' and would consider buying it from her. (Blue Book puts the max value at no more then $1,200.) This sounds like bad business....milk and old woman to pad your pockets. What ever happened to morals! read more
