My realtor suggested I check out Jackalope for furniture and pots for my new place in SF. Upon entering the deserted furniture area, tape measure in hand, I was unable to find a trash receptacle for my empty paper cup. After a considerable walk around the store , (and ladies room) I gave up and placed it on a dresser. Suddenly the absent "saleslady" appeared and began yelling at another customer about the "lazy, rude, stupid PEOPLE who put cups on things"! I asked her WHERE I was supposed to put it, and she pointed out a tiny powder room trash can behind the cash REGISTER desk! She never apologized or asked me how she could assist me with any furniture, but remained very emotional and upset until I left the building. (?) The poor janitor was afraid, but he bravely jumped into the fray and offered that he had removed the trash can from the restroom to clean it ....... but that fact didn't appease the creature. As a Southerner, I understand that folks from NewJersey and that area have a different culture, and I have compassion that they need jobs in Santa Fe, but lets get real. As a nurse, I'd suggest both Estrogen replacement therapy and Zoloft . As a business owner, I'd suggest immediate termination, no second chances for this one. read more

Jackalope is "Folk Art by the Truckload." It is uniquely Santa Fean. It's comparable to imports stores... but it's even more out there. One can get a lunchbox with Hindu deities on it, Native American flute music, Oaxacan pottery, and watch prairie dogs. Often, one can see artists at work, so it's always an open studio. It's the down-to-earth,affordable equivalent to the Folk Art Museum. It's a beautiful,fun place on the main drag of Cerrillos Road. It's definitely a must-see tourist trap! I still have a lovely piece of pottery from northern Mexico. Beautiful place to go... and a shopper's paradise in the Land of Enchantment! read more

"Jack-a-dope" - that's the moniker I've hung on this place. I've lived in Santa Fe for nearly 25 years and I cringe every time my SO wants to go here and I have to go along. This time, it was for furniture. The prices are so outrageous as to be ludicrous. We ended up buying a mesquite table on Old Las Vegas Highway (just north of Old Pecos Trail...check it out) for $85. The SAME THING at this hole would have been $250. Avoid at all costs. Pun intended. read more

If I were local, I would probably come here every week. The selection of unique decor items is amazing and the prices are super low. But as a tourist, I wouldn't go out of my way to come here. They have lots of souvenier type things like chile sauce, but you can pick that up pretty much anywhere, and it's not like you're going to lug a giant piece of pottery or some awesome salvage doors home on the plane with you. For home decor, the place rocks, but as a place for out of towners to visit, it's cool but not neccessarily worth seeking out (especially if you later find out there's another location right next to your ABQ hotel!). read more

Oh Jackalope, what has happened to you!? Maybe it's the winter season... Maybe it is the store re-configuration... Did you get new management? You for sure lost your buyer a long while back. The lusciousness is gone! Half empty shelves. Empty areas. Everything had a layer of dust. And lost a good 50% of your great product. ALWAYS have to stop in a buy a basket full of stuff when in town, but this time NOTHING had to come home with us. If you're not in the market for giant GIANT planters, skip this stop. Sad. Sad. SAD. What a place! The vibrant colors suck you in immediately and then it just builds from there! From beads to furniture, glassware and gorgeous clay pots- you can find nearly anything here! It's like being a street market- all sorts of vendor's items and treasures! I searched everywhere in town for affordable oil cloth, at Jackalope I found the perfect tablecloth already made for less than I could even buy the fabric! I love browsing the beads with friends on a sunny day- an easy way to inspire creativity, even on a budget! Looking for a gift? There is no chance you'll leave Jackalope empty handed. This place was just amazing! I only bought a few items but there is so much to chose from, so much culture. I do not mind that it's setup like a mercantile and you have to pay at each booth because there are some really beautiful and unique items you will find here. I live in Texas and definitely plan to go back out here one day so I can go to Jackalope. The little prairie dog setup was probably my favorite thing about here. This place is a tourist trap if their ever was one! Be that as it may ~ it has everything you could ever hope to find in the southwest. Beads, pots, furniture, clothes, iron workers, and of course woven baskets galore! Plus you can buy a snack & watch the glass blowers do their thing~ Its really cool. My friend bought the most adorable carrot earrings here. CARROTS! In addition to local artisans, you can find furniture, home decorations, glass blown art, beads, and prairie dogs. Yeah, I'm serious. Are you in Santa Fe for a weekend and want to be sure you buy gifts for people back home? This is the place for you, my friend. It's huge and even right on a road heading out of town. It is chock full of touristy New Mexicana with a healthy amount of ethnic basketry and mass produced folk art from around the world. This sounds flip but it's entirely true. Occasionally it has special sale events though that are hard to define. One time I went here for a prison folk art sale. No joke it was a sale of artwork made by prisoners at the maximum security prison outside of town. Weird as it sounds it was actually pretty charming with handmade paper beads, folded paper artwork, and lots of Lady of Guadalupes. The proceeds went to building a nicer prisoner visitor center for the families There's the famous Prarie Dog Village which is always a fun scene. It's basically a big walled pit with adorable prarie dogs scampering around. Be VERY careful to keep the kids out of crawling over the wall though - the fleas on the dogs usually carry the bubonic plague. For the residents it's not a bad place to furnish your house in the Mexican-New Mexican style and a great source of outdoor pot planters and a respectable plant nursery. Jackalope, you're the best. If I had more room in my Hyundai Elantra, I would have easily taken more things home with me. In the past few years I have visited all of the Jackalope stores in the New Mexico area, and the on in Santa Fe by far is the greatest.I happened to be at this location on Sunday, so some vendors were set up at an outdoor flea market located on the premises. Jackalope will carry your run of the mill tourist things made in Peru, and India, but they also carry some folk art goodies made in Mexico, and the local area. There is one vendor at Jackalope who makes the most simple pieces out of clay, which usually incorporate calla lilys, and my Mom in the past had bought me a piece as a wedding gift, well, to my surprise when I visited on Sunday, the lady who made my piece was actually there making some more pieces, and greeting customers and actually gave me a free small piece she was working on. How can you NOT love that? It made me happy to see that not everything in Jackalope was bought and imported in, and they were still support the locals artists, and enthusiasts. If you're a fan of Day of the Dead, or Dia los muertos merchandise, then CHECK THIS PLACE OUT, and they should satisfy any wants, or needs cheaply. read more

This place just goes on and on and on..... Can I just go live in the house in the back with all the great landscaping? That would be greeeaaaat. Yeah, I didn't actually find all the tchotchke amazingness here that I thought I would. And I don't know if they downsized the prairie dog habitat, but ya'll- that is just a weird ring of dirt with some pretty common pests living in it....anywho. Some weird overpriced stuff for sure. If you can't find something at Jackalope to satisfy your southwestern decor needs, you're probably not looking hard enough. This place is like a Disney World for southwestern decor buffs. There are several buildings containing pottery, garden stuff, furniture and rugs. It didn't bother me that most of the stuff was made out of this country. I found a very nice Mexican Zapotec Indian rug to hang on my wall at home. I agree with the other reviewers about the stuffy people working here. I was shuffling through the rugs and one elderly lady employee clearly was annoyed with my activity. I was doing a neat job of it, but her panties were getting into a bunch anyway. However she quickly became my best friend when she learned I was buying one. I only wish I could have fit more stuff into my luggage... read more

WOW.... Look at all this .... STUFF!! It's fun to look around at all of the odds and ends. The pottery is beautiful. I would recommend going on a cool fall day. I think it would be a beast if it were 90+ degrees. If you love southwest, folkart, beads, pottery, glass.... this is the place for you! If you are visiting ... There was so much to see my eyes could not keep up. The prices were a bit high, but there was an amazing selection of items from all over. It was like a Cost Plus on steroids. I also liked that there were cats walking about. My issue with the cats though, was that there was one who was asleep on one of the shirts for sell. Jackalope is my favorite place to stop and buy some goods from New Mexico when I come home to visit. There is so much to see and so many different little shops that make up the whole market. We were helped by the nicest lady in the furniture building, which only added to our great experience. Also, they have powdered green chile, which is pretty tough to find. Do yourself a favor and swing in here to see what they have. The "Prairie Dog Village" is a funny little thing to see too. read more

I heart the Jackalope! I travel to Santa Fe every year for vacation and must must must stop in and see this store. it has everything....from furniture, masks. clay pottery, plants, garden art, blown glass work, hand carved wood doors, and much more... I enjoy watching them blow glass on site and see the talent and work that goes into making a piece! Furniture is a bit over priced but most of it is unique carved wood antiques with old world flair. All other home accessories are very reasonably priced!!! My son loves it because they even have a home for live prairie dogs onsite! It is a must see store if you are ever in the area! read more

I absolutely love Jackalope. They have basically anything you could imagine. Last time I was at Jackalope I purchased salsas, coffee, little trinkets, etc. I always find great stuff there. I've been to Jackalope in Santa Fe many times, and just realized there are stores elsewhere too! I may have to visit the LA shop if I'm ever up north. They have some great home decor items that I've never been able to buy (too large to take home) but maybe if I had my car with me... ha. It was just okay. Lots of outdoor garden objects like statues, rocks, and ceramic pots. There also was a glass blowing area which I admit, it was pretty rad to watch this guy wielding a big hot stick around before I got distracted by brightly colored glass pumpkins of the shelf. There was nothing that I found in any of the areas that I felt was worth buying. If you're looking for better arts & crafts, it's definitely worth hitting up the art market on Sundays instead. read more
