Yesterday, a small Rat Terrier wandered onto our property looking as though it had been lost for some time and had not been properly cared for. Although we have two dogs of our own and a new baby at home, we took the dog in, fed it, bathed it, and kept it safe inside overnight while trying to locate its owners. Unfortunately, the situation became very stressful for our household. Our smaller dog was extremely anxious, and our 62-pound rescue dog was also stressed and beginning to show signs of aggression toward the unfamiliar dog. After 24 hours of caring for the stray and being unable to locate its owners, I brought the dog to the Humane Society, hoping they could take over its care and help reunite it with its family or find a safe outcome. What disappointed me was not the mission of the Humane Society, but the way I was treated during the intake process. Rather than feeling supported after doing my best to help a lost animal, I felt pressured and judged for not being able to continue fostering the dog. The gentleman assisting me seemed frustrated with my situation, even as I explained the challenges we were facing with our own pets and the fact that we have a baby in the home. My family has supported the Humane Society over the years through donations and advocacy, which made this experience especially disheartening. I understand shelters are often overwhelmed and resources can be limited, but a little compassion and appreciation for community members who step up to help lost animals would go a long way. We did everything we could to care for this dog for the time it was with us, and I left feeling unappreciated for those efforts. I truly hope this feedback is taken constructively, as I still believe in the importance of the Humane Society's work. I simply wish the interaction had reflected the same compassion toward people that they strive to show animals. read more

There is a dog that looks starved. Tried and tried to get someone to answer the phone. Poor dog. It has been carrying a 15 ft chain for about three weeks. We fed it twice while it was trying to eat garbage. No one answered any of the phone lines today. Whoever owns this blond female dog does not deserve an animal. read more

the vet side of this facility is, unfortunately, a filthy flea ridden mess, as soon as you walk in the door there is an unhealthy odor, may they take the steps to make it better. read more

I called on Friday 12/5/23 and no one answered the phone the whole day. I Rushed over trying to tell someone I wanted to adopt Brue. When i arrived in person I told the girl behind the desk I had been calling all day. the girl tells me she WAS THE ONLY THERE . I am not blamings her at all I blame Management running that center. **MY FULL REVIEW DIDN'T FIT BUT I POSTED IT ON THEIR FACEBOOK PAGE AS WELL** If you get a young kitten from this shelter please beware. Let me start out by saying I understand the shelter is packed and all the volunteers are doing the best they can, but something has to change somehow. We adopted two cats on Saturday October 1st. They were both kept in the same cage and we felt bad leaving one all alone over the weekend (we were there close to closing on Saturday). The two cats we adopted were Twilight (FKA Claudia) and the second Leo (FKA Chief). When we got them home the kittens were eating drinking and playing like normal. Twilight never seemed to have as much energy as Leo but we assumed that was because we just introduced them to a new home. Both cats were infested with fleas we took hours to make sure both cats were flea free. This was not a problem because like I said they are packed with animals and doing the best they can. On Thursday morning was the last time we saw Twilight eat. She still was drinking and somewhat playful with Leo. We wrote it off as maybe she's just tired kittens do sleep 16-24 hours a day. Friday night we started to see Twilight decline rapidly overnight (we were pushing fluids and food). We decided early morning about 3am it was time to load up the car and take her to the emergency vet. Her poor little body gave out on the way there but we were able to get her back with CPR. As soon as we got to the vet she was gone. They took her back and she took her last breath. That there was $290. For the cremation plus some dewormer and and antibiotic to give to Leo. They were able to get a fecal sample and told us that or baby had Coccidia. This was on October 8th we literally had Twilight for one week. We went to the shelter to inform them that the cat we got from them had Coccidia. They did not seem very concerned at all. They pretty much played it off and said "we'll do you want another cat".. we declined at the time and went back home. When we got back home we noticed Leo looking around for Twilight and my husband decided maybe we can get another cat around his age and they will bond together. So, we did go back to the shelter and get another cat knowing that we had the Coccidia medicine on hand along with a dewormer that we would start this cat on the same day we picked her up. We looked at a few cats and no cat really caught my eye as I was still traumatized by what just happened to Twilight. Along comes this baby girl tuxedo cat who stole our hearts. This baby was just put in the shelter the women stated "15 minutes after you walked out the door the first time". It was also brought to our attention that the vet does not work on weekends so this baby was put in there without even getting a simple look over by the vet. Anyways, we fell in love with this no named cat and decided to take her home. We named her Sox. She instantly made her way into our hearts and Leo's they were the cutest duo I have ever seen. Leo was always very vocal and always wanted us to share our food with him. He was a little goofball. Wednesday night was the last time he ate. He literally stole a piece of chicken from my plate. The next day he was turning his nose to food (we tried dry food, wet food and even his favorite people food). This concerned us so we made a visit with Town and Country Vet Hospital (we absolutely LOVE them). They fit us in to their busy schedule and advised us how it may be more than Coccidia since Leo was already on the antibiotic (for five days at this point). The other thought was feline parvovirus (I know there is some fancy term but if you look up feline parvovirus it will come up). We were given all the comfort care medicine we would need. We were pushing food and fluids until Leo could no longer stomach anything and started throwing up. At that point we decided to pack up our two children at midnight and head to Gulf Coast Emergency Vet (absolutely love them as well). They prescribed Leo and couple nausea medicines and gave us some more Albon liquid. We took Leo home and followed their comfort care instructions closely (I didn't sleep at all since 5am Thursday morning). Thankfully with the nausea medicine Leo was keeping food down. Early morning about 7am we decided we were going to head to the emergency vet because Leo was dehydrated so we wanted to get some subcutaneous fluids into him. He was clinging onto life the whole way to the vets. When we got there (it is a 40 minute drive from Pascagoula) we decided the best decision would be to let him go. He fought a long hard fight. So on October 14th a day shy of two weeks of having Leo he had crossed the rainbow bridge. We are now even deeper in the hole money wise with the three vet trips we just took within those 24 hours. They are finally getting the facelift update on the facility that they have been needing for years and I want to thank everybody who has contributed for this great cause. The animals seem well cared for and I saw no concerns. Have attended several of their fundraisers/adoption events and each one is special and has a positive adoption connection perspective. My new pups had played the great Escape out of our yard. Through social media we found out that they had been picked up and taken to the shelter. We went by their to pick them up and while there decided to get them chipped, so that in case they escaped without their collars again, they could be located. We also had their rabies shot done. It wasn't really that expensive to have done. If in the market for a pet stop by the shelter. They have all kinds, including purebreds. Save your money on an expensive pup and get a shelter pup. read more

I will NEVER be going to the Jackson County Animal Shelter in Gautier EVER again. I had an appointment for 3:30 at the shelter, but my mom and I just left because the animal control officer was extremely rude to my mother and SCREAMED at her and acted like she was stupid. We were pulling into the place, and she did not realize he wanted her to stop, she just thought he wanted her to slow down based on his hand motions. We will never be back. I feel bad for the animals because the people working here are so off-putting that no one wants to come get them. Even the people that work behind the desk inside are usually rude, too. I've also had many friends that have tried to donate food, and they workers were rude to them and bothered that they even came into donate. They lost our business forever. read more
