We had a fantastic day with Gage as our climbing guide. It was not our first time climbing but we are also not super experienced in outdoor climbing. We chose a one day rock climbing experience at the Hoback river (AKA "the shield") for $600. They do offer half-day experiences but it's not much less money and given how different outdoor climbing is from indoors, and that if the weather is nice you can just take some breaks, I would recommend the full-day option if you are considering a one day rock climbing experience. Compared to climbing before this in Moab and considering our climb was not in the park (Tetons), it was still beautiful and felt more "customized" than our previous outdoor climb. Gage recommended routes but also took our input and was patient throughout the day to ensure a great experience. We also looked at Exum, who charged slightly more to climb around Jenny Lake (apparently the park only allows two permitted companies to operate in separate places around the Tetons), we ended up going with JH Mountain Guides and did not regret our decision. I would consider the multi-day climb in the future if we could save up the money for it and experience the beautiful views of the Tetons with these guys. We weren't totally sure of our level but the Shield offers a variety of different leveled climbs from 5.5 and up. As the day went on, and with Gages' incredible enthusiasm and support (super easy going guy), we gained confidence and ended the day on a 5.9 climb. Gage carried all the equipment and showed us a variety of climbing techniques during our day. A group of 3 (including the guide) is really perfect for this type of experience. JH Mountain Guides also climbs in another outside-the-park location which has more beginner routes. Given all the choices for outdoor activities and high costs to do anything in/around Jackson, rock climbing for a day with these guys is a solid choice that I would recommend to others. read more

Jackson Hole Mountain Guides - Base camp at the Grand Teton - Tours Near Me - Jackson, Wyoming

Completed a September summit of the Grand Teton via the Exum Ridge and can't thank JHMG enough for the all-around awesome experience. There are 2 companies that have concessions on the Grand Teton and in preparation for the trip did a lot of research. The 2 main differences between companies relate to the high camps and the trip duration. First, JHMG does a 3 day trip - one day to high came, a summit day, and then the 3rd day packing out.The other company runs two-day trips - one day to high camp and the second is summit and back to trailhead. The hike into campo and down from camp is not exceedingly hard, but when you try to pack that onto the tail end of a summit bid that starts before 4AM, you can understand how great it was to get back to camp and have a great meal and celebrate your accomplishment with your guides and other clients in an amazingly beautiful setting. The JHMG camp is about 40 minutes lower than the other camp which makes for a slightly longer summit day, but it is also more sheltered from the weather and on balance seemed earns far higher marks. Second, the high camp includes a communal tent for meals and socials but it also has tents set up with sleeping bags and pads already up there and ready for you. All you have to do is cary a sleeping bag liner. The other company just has the communal tent where everyone sleeps together, eats, social, etc. The thought of sleeping with 12 snoring people I just met at 11k feet is pretty unappealing. Food was plentiful, hot and prepared by the guides. The office is well run, with great information and responsive communication in the booking process. The guides were extremely professional and were all AMGA certified. I've done lots of hiking and a little climbing, but never the two together so this was a new experience. I felt really safe and even felt bad for some of the solo crews out there that seemed underprepared. We were fortunate to have warm weather, but if there had been any rain/snow/ice/high wind I would certainly want the peace of mind of being connected to such a well run guide service to make sure I got home safe and sound. It is clear that Jackson Hole Mountain Guides has really got their operation dialed in and I wouldn't hesitate one bit in recommending them as the go-to service for Grant Teton trips. read more

I've climbed with Exum Mountain Guides and Jackson Hole Mountain Guides. These guys win hands down. If you want to have a completely miserable f'd up experience from start to finish, go with Exum. If you want to deal with a maniacal b*tch of an owner (cyndi), go with Exum. If you want a guide who is afraid of cameras, go with Exum... If you want a pleasant experience with real pros who are passionate and love the park and its guests, go with Jackson Hole Mountain Guides. It's a shame that they don't have a hut at Jenny Lake like Exum does. But don't let that deter you! read more

This year I hired JHMG to guide me up Mount Moran. I signed up to climb with a partner but didn't have one for the climb so JHMG paired me up with a fantastic climbing partner named Joel. This worked very well to defray some of the costs and Joel turned out to be a fantastic partner. Our guide was a young man named Chase Nelson. As it turned out, both Joel and I have had lots of experience in the mountains and hiring guides. We agreed that we can say, without hesitation, that Chase Nelson, of JHMG, was the single best guide either of us have ever had. He clearly loves what he does and finds tremendous joy in the mountains. As a guide he was clear about our plan and his expectations of us as climbers. He asked for our input and thoughts and incorporated our ideas and wishes where safe and practical. The entire trip was an exercise in joyful exuberance. My overall experience with JHMG was first class. As an organization they were efficient, safe, accommodating, and very easy to work with. Although I can't speak to the other guides, if they are half as good as Chase Nelson, you cannot go wrong and will have an amazing adventure with JHMG. Climbed the Grand in late June and the experience was far above what I expected from start to finish. Since JHMG is so good I booked a climb with them at Red Rock outside of Las Vegas and had another great two days of climbing. Thanks to Joel for helping get everything set up. Lisa was our guide at Red Rock and we could not have asked for anything better for our two days. Our two days of climbing for exceeded our expectations. I just finished a 3 day trip to summit Grand Teton with my brother. There were a host of things that impressed me about the organization. the office was nice, new and well kept and staff was well organized (not always the case with mtn. guiding outfits in my experience) We met our exceptional guide, Doug Workman, at the trailhead on day 1 (after being introduced to him at the office) and promptly spent the next 6 hours hiking to base camp. What was SO nice about this particular trip was the fact that we did not have to set up camp ourselves. The tents were already pitched when we arrived at 11,000' high camp lined with sleeping bags and pads. (we only needed to hike up w bag liners) the base camp was well stocked and we enjoyed hot meals and coffee before and after our climb. (I should add that we, of course, did hike up with our own meals to share) My brother and I have typically ascended glaciated mountains with crampons and possess basic mountaineering skills, and have never attempted peaks that required rock climbing skills. the route we elected to take (Exum ridge) had a couple of pitches that required rock climbing skills in the 5.5 range. While these were out of our experience range, Doug was such a pro, he helped us with every move and we climbed the mountain with surprising ease. We were on the top on a clear beautiful day and never felt we were endangering ourselves. Doug worked safely and efficiently with us and made our experience world class. After returning to the high camp on summit day, we relaxed with coffee and another meal, slept well into morning the next day and returned back to the parking lot at a comfortable pace. I recommend this organization if you intend to use guides for any mtn or rock climbing wherever they operate out of. This is my 4th different guided service and this was the best. Also, I believe JHMG is the only guided service doing 2 night trips on the Grand, and it makes quite a difference on summit day to stay at the high camp.
