First day with my baby. Super sleepy but loved to cuddle.

Do not come here. I adopted a 2 month old kitten from here. The day I met him, he was fearful but otherwise seemed healthy. The one thing that stood out was how visibly dirty he was. His fur was matted with grime and dirt. He was a stray, so I assumed he would be cleaned before being sent home with an adopter. I was told to come back in two days because he needed to be neutered. Two days later, I returned to pick him up. While waiting, I sat in front of his cage and watched him throw up. He looked extremely sick. I informed the front desk and decided to come back later. The shelter was closed the next day, so I returned the following morning. He looked even weaker and visibly ill. I assumed he was simply recovering from surgery. I have cared for cats after surgery before and know what normal recovery looks like. What I could not understand was why he was still filthy. He looked exactly as dirty as the day I first met him. He also had a known flea problem, yet he looked like he had gone through the entire process without ever being properly prepared for adoption. Seeing him in that condition did not make me feel confident that he was receiving the care I was told he was getting. I was assured the fleas were not a concern and that he was a perfectly healthy kitten who had received all necessary vaccinations and care. I was sent home with him that day. The next morning, my house was infested with fleas. Not a few fleas. They were everywhere. He was constantly itching and being bitten. I found fleas in my kitchen, bathrooms, bedroom, and even my car. I had to treat my entire home while caring for a recently neutered kitten who could not be bathed normally. He suffered because of a problem I was told was not an issue. Within two days of bringing him home, everything went downhill. He stopped eating. Then he stopped drinking. Then he stopped moving. He would stand unsteadily, lower his head toward the ground, and remain there completely unresponsive. I remembered being told to bring him back if anything went wrong after surgery, so I did exactly that. Instead of receiving help, I was told these issues were not pre-existing conditions and that I needed to take him to a veterinarian. So I did. The veterinarian was appalled that he had been allowed to go home. The exam revealed a 104 degree fever, severe dehydration, infection, mild anemia, and neurological symptoms, including seizures. Seizures. In a 2 month old kitten I had adopted less than a week earlier. I spent $255 on the exam and bloodwork alone, and he needed even more treatment than I could provide. That not including the 30 dollar flea treatment for my home and the Capstar medication worth 43 that I bought. This should never have happened. When I brought the veterinary records back to the shelter, I expected concern, accountability, or at least an explanation. Instead, I got excuses. The person assigned to speak with me repeatedly explained that she was not a veterinarian and could not answer many of the medical questions I was asking. That left me wondering why she was handling a complaint involving a critically ill kitten who had just been adopted out. The final conversation left me disgusted. I was told I could either pay for treatment myself or surrender him. I chose to surrender him because he clearly needed more medical care than I could provide. Almost immediately after signing the paperwork, I was told, "Just so you know, if we can't help him, we're going to euthanize him." I had spent the previous week trying to save this kitten, paying veterinary bills and treating my home for fleas, only to be told that surrendering him might mean he dies. When I asked why he had been sent home with me in the first place, I was told they did not have the neurological resources necessary to identify conditions they could not immediately see. I could have been told he needed additional monitoring before being adopted out. Instead, he was sent home while suffering from anemia, infection, dehydration, fleas, and seizures. I was also told it was better for him to be in my home because the shelter had too many animals to closely monitor them all. That statement alone says everything. He was adopted out before anyone knew or bothered to find out how serious his condition was. Anemia. Fleas. Dehydration. Infection. Seizures. What a memorable adoption experience. Instead of focusing on moving as many animals through the system as possible, make sure the animals being adopted are healthy enough to survive the process. The lack of concern shown throughout this entire situation was shocking. Disgusting disregard and recklessness of the wellbeing of a helpless animal. I have attached photos from the day I brought him home and videos from my final day with him. Yes they're unnecessary and should be private, but words alone do not show what me and the poor guy had to go through. My boy deserved better. "Humane society." How ironic.

    Cat!

I've supported JHS for over a decade but finally had my first experience as an adopter with them, and it went wonderfully. My spouse and I decided we were ready to bring a cat into our home a couple years after our senior cat passed away, and we headed to JHS to start seeing if any cat felt like a match. The facility is beautiful and clearly designed to minimize stress as much as possible for the animals. The front desk employees were friendly and told us to look around, so we did. We wanted an adult cat, and we found that -- at least on this visit -- they were all in a special "citrus suite" that required accompaniment by a counselor since cats can be a bit spicy. It was about 30 minutes before closing at this point, but we were assured that we wouldn't be rushed out with closing and to take as much time with the cats and counselor as we wanted. Once our lovely counselor Charly was ready, she took us into the suite and started talking to us about the cats. She had detailed information about each and talked to us about what we were looking for, what our home was like, whether we had children or pets, and whether we had experience with cats. It felt very friendly but also like a good two-way evacuation (us of the cats and JHS of us), which I appreciated. One cat ended up showing interest in us pretty quickly, and we spent about 20 minutes with her. Spoiler alert: she's sitting on the couch with me now at home. Back to that day: we said we wanted to adopt her, and Charly got her into a travel box and had us wait for a few minutes at the front while she got paperwork together. She brought us our new family member and a big folder with important dates for follow-up vaccines, medical information, and even some coupons. Once we got home, they even sent us some more photos that had taken of our new cat during her time at the shelter, and the online tool they partner with was useful, too. It was definitely a great experience, and it reaffirmed my belief that the work of JHS is one of the best things about this city.

This is an awesome Humane Society and you can tell they care about pets! It is so spacious and clean and beautifully laid out. The lady at the welcome desk was very informative.

    Her name was Ada

I adopted a 5 month old dog lab/pit mixed Around the end of September of this yr The dog was a little aggressive when playing with her but I took it as she was still in her puppy stage October 9,2024 she was sitting at my feet while I was at the kitchen sink, I turned suddenly, she grabbed ahold of my leg .I fell to the floor, she and she wouldn't let go I slowly pulled her off of my leg and got up .As I did she jumped and bit my thigh Thankfully I was able to grab her by the collar and put her in my laundry room so I could call an ambulance If it had a child being attacked , the child would have probably been killed . She was taken back to the humane society, only because animal control was closed due to the storm Humane society now has her up again for adoption and I was everyone to see a picture of this dog so that it's not adopted out again

The cat rooms have fun climbing areas and indoor/outdoor areas.

So happy for them that they were able to build their new facility! We had visited their old place several times, and the building were old and depressing. The new one is bright, open, and cheerful. I am happy that Jacksonville has this No-Kill facility! We came here to visit the cats and kittens. The volunteers are friendly and the got out some kittens for us to snuggle. We also brought our rescue cat here for surgery, and all went great with that.

Thank you, JHS and Dolly's dreams. You made our dream come true with Sheba. She's living the lifestyle now.

    Kitten adoption

I adopted a kitten from here that was only two months old. They required him to stay an extra week so they could neuter him and deworm him because he had all sorts of worms. When I was able to pick him up a week later they told me he was worm free and he was incredibly skinny.. a day later after already being exposed to my other cat and my dog, he was pooping out LIVE tapeworms and he had fleas.. Ended up spending about 1000$ in vet bills on all of my animals because it spread like wildfire. Wish there had been a better checkup on his health because I trusted the vet here. On the other hand I know it's hard since there are so many animals at a shelter so it was mostly my fault exposing him to my other animals before I knew his exact health away from the shelter. The people here were very kind, adoption was easy, and overall I would recommend them. Adoption from a shelter can always come with its surprises.

My partner and I dropped a beloved stray kitten we had been attending to the care of, having become acclimated to us, and generally putting our love into. We had noticed that he had a puncture wound under his neck and became gravely concerned about his well being. We brought him in and bathed him, cared for the wound but ultimately decided it would be best that we take him in somewhere to be seen in a last minute emergency. I was worried the wound would become septic. Upon arriving at JHS we were greeted by a courteous (and seemingly caring) receptionist who helped us with providing the necessary information. We explained why we were bringing him in. We expressed that we had every intention to adopt him into our home after he was cared for. They insured us that we will be the ones contacted when the procedure was complete, and when he was available to be picked up. They took it upon themselves to neuter, vax, and deworm him. Few days went by and after not hearing anything for sometime (we tried calling several times and were never able to get through) we decided it would be best to go up to the facility to be given an update. Much to our distress, our beloved Chester we'd just spent the last 5 months acclimating him to us, was adopted out. The entirely opposite handling of what was assured to us. We were informed initially that he would be technically considered a trap and release, instead of him being released to the street we came upon him, he was to be given to us. The staff was incredibly insensitive, insulting by refusing to refer to Chester by the name we gave him, the technician which brought us into a exam room to speak to us was cold, callous, and generally emotionless as they informed us "to make things easier to understand for this purpose I'll refer to him by the name given to him here. Rivault" We were lied to, taken advantage of, mislead and taken advantage of entirely. Whether this error in documenting happened as a result of the receptionist who lied to us and said that this whole process would be possible and painless, or the doctor of which the receptionist blamed having said the doctor made the call to place our kitten up for adoption, the matter remains the same. Essentially a kitten napping. After informing the appropriate people of the experience we had, we were assured that the family who adopted him would be contacted and made aware specifically that a mistake was made. A family is grieving. Instead what we got was a call to inform them that they had another family who was very interested in adopting him. (Completely removing themselves from admitting any guilt or blame.) This whole experience could have and should have been avoided. Due to the extreme negligence of JHS and their troublesome technician we are a grieving family missing what had become a piece of our unit. Shame on JHS, and I sincerely hope the negligent staff responsible is determined and appropriately reprimanded if not fired. Anyone who is having the privilege to be working in close proximity to animals needs to have a far better manner and demeanor when having to deal with heartbroken families. Disgusting, despicable and abhorrent. I'd never consider supporting this business again.

The dog I adopted from them....storm
    Reagan H.

I strongly suggest the adoption department I adopted my storm from them and they were amazing 5 stars for them! But the poor experience i had with his heart worm treatment was just sad. I took him in Tuesday with all his things (food portioned out for the two days, medication for anxiety and his blanket and stuffy) I told him the measurements for his food and the medication was for the night because he has separation anxiety and does not like being in a kennel and the stress of being there in general. When i picked him up they informed me that everything went well and he had no anxiety and was fine. When the brought him out his nose was torn up from most likely trying to tear out of his kennel (he had dine that also in the past when i first got him so that how i was able to assume that is how he 90% most likely got it. Also he smelled like poop and pee and was covered in it. When they handed back his belongings his food and meds were untouched when the lady said that he ate all his food and when i asked she quickly changed to that they gave him kennel food when i specifically asked them to give him his own food he has a sensitive stomach. Also they gave me back his blanket covered in poop and pee! Overall i was very disappointed I definitely would have never left him overnight if this was the case of how they were gonna treat my poor pup. Other than this case this heart worm treatment seemed to have gone well and was very helpful with how to continue his discharge care and instructions. Here is also a picture of my boy!

We love the Jacksonville Humane Society! We have adopted two kittens from them over the last five years. The Humane Society has an amazing facility for dogs and cats. We visited for the "Cat Cafe" event. For a $15 cover charge, we had coffee and doughnuts (from Mini-Bar) and a chance to play with a bunch of awesome kittens. We were in the second group that day. The staff said a bunch of kittens were adopted that morning. After being upstairs for the cafe, we went downstairs to visit more kitties. There were a number of older cats that needed families to love. The Humane Society also has a wonderful and affordable animal hospital. All of our cats have been treated there.

Fast forward to 3 years old, she went into heat for the first time. I was very confused and wanted to make sure she's okay, so I brought her into Fort Caroline Animal Clinic. The receptionist, vet tech, and doctor were beyond sweet. The doctor listened to me explaining my dog's history and why I'm concerned and she also was concerned, confused, but I could also tell that she's invested in getting to the bottom of what's going on. She's getting records from the clinic that did my dog's surgery and we will be doing an ultrasound to see if she has a uterus and what's going on before having her spayed. As someone who works in the human medical field, I usually get frustrated with lack of explanations from vets and even my own doctors, but I found that Dr. Lincoln was very descriptive in what could be the problem (if there is one) and what she can do to get the answers and outcome we need. I'm a dog mom of 3 and have brought my dogs to many many different vets in several different states; the services my dog was provided and care that was received was the best I've ever witnessed. My dog is also shy, doesn't care too much for people other than me and Dr. Lincoln and the vet tech navigated this smoothly while getting her temp, checking her heart, and administering vaccines. The price was slightly higher than I'm used to, but the price was worth it, in my opinion, because I know 100% that they care for their patients and will do whatever is necessary to make sure their patients are healthy and receive great care. I couldn't recommend this vet clinic enough and will continue to bring all 3 of my babies here.

Okay; updated review. I've been to this clinic on 3 different occasions now…read more 1st: dogs needed vaccines. I was surprised that they only do paper records and do not offer pro-heart injections for heartworm prevention. They have a weird excuse of saying it doesn't work for dogs in this area or something. None of my other vets have had problems with Pro-heart. The paper records are SO hard to read due to handwriting and layout of the papers. Even yesterday, I couldn't even tell if my dachshund had his rabies shot updated because I couldn't read the handwriting; neither can other vets. 2nd visit: more vaccines. I wasn't seen until 55 minutes after my appointment time. The receptionist decided to spend about 3 minutes trying to argue with me that boxers cannot be black, so she must be mixed breed. I finally had to inform her what reverse brindle is. The place felt so outdated and not clean. My dachshund is one of those dogs that barks until you pet him. The doctor just stood in the doorway holding his ears for 30 seconds until I asked him to just reach down and pet him one time and he will stop barking. He did and barking stopped. I know, my dog should be trained and has been through lots of training, but that behavior still has yet to change. It is what it is. I went back last month because my dachshund had runny nose, itching, a rash, hot spots on his paws. These people took his temperature and it was 103 degrees (fever) and automatically assume it's the new canine virus going on. Absolutely 0 tests were done; no blood work, no skin scraping, no nothing. They gave us lots of Doxycycline and that's all. He finished the Doxy within 2-3 weeks and STILL had issues. He's practically crawling out of his skin. I took him to our old vet that we were going to stop using since we moved 27 minutes away. This vet immediately said "This all sound like allergies; im not sure why they said it's this canine virus." An allergy panel was done and we were given amoxicillin, allergy meds, prednisone, and a cytopoint injection. The allergy test results came back and he's allergic to lamb, beef, fish, peas, and pecan trees. He's been exposed to both pecan trees and peas, so this is likely the reason for his allergic reaction. When my fiancé called to tell them our dog is still itching bad with little improvement and asked why they didn't run any tests, the receptionist had a major attitude problem and said she'd put the doctor on the phone. Then we get a lady that claimed to not be the doctor. She started lying and saying "Oh, did your fiancé tell you he has fleas and he's allergic to them; that's why he's sick." I laughed. They never did an allergy test and checked for fleas. He had none and has been on Bravecto for years. The attitude these people have and their archaic approaches to veterinary medicine is just insanity to me. I can't believe this business is open and I honestly hate everything about them.
