the BEST MMA & BJJ gym in all of Jax. bar none…read more home of pro fighters, that have reached the highest levels of MMA (UFC & PFL) and black belts who compete & win at the highest levels (IBJJF) as well as a stellar kids program & family knit community. GB Jax is the premiere martial arts gym in Duval. 11/10 recommend!

Great jiu jitsu school with a defined curriculum…read more They also have kickboxing classes if you are interested and some wrestling which mostly caters to high school students around the area. An all around well structured set up to learn mixed martial arts but jiu jitsu is their main area of focus. The instructors there are helpful and knowledgeable and the black belt students will help you learn as well. It has a good environment of getting everyone to learn and progress in their skills. Students from this academy also compete at MMA competitions and jiu jitsu tournaments as well. They also do separate classes for white/blue belts versus the other higher ups so students that are just beginning can learn the basics without getting overwhelmed. In addition, there are separate classes for kids and adults. Recommend this academy for people who want to get started in their jiu jitsu journey.

After taking the trial classes, we decided to stay at Smiley. The reasons? My kids were happy there and were excited to return because they, "Had fun"- their words. The coaches are hands on and encouraging. There's no pressure for them to compete, which isn't a goal of ours (the parents) or the kids. We want our kids to learn self defense because we feel it's a necessary life skill. The coaches at Smiley respect that and train our kids just the same (unlike other gyms that pushed private lessons and competitions). I like the affirmations Coach Smiley shares at the end of class. In addition to learning self defense, I want my kids to build confidence, resilience, determination, etc... the coaches at Smiley help speak life into the kids while teaching them self defense techniques. Lastly, I like the options they have for kids (8 and up): MMA, Boxing, and Muay Thai! They have BJJ for kids 4 and up I believe. It's nice to have a place they can learn different skills and have the time to do it with their packed schedules. You get your moneys worth! I'm looking forward to seeing my kids grow in skill and confidence at Smiley Academy.

She was very rude and mean, when I asked to talk to a manager she state she was the manager then I asked her to let me talk to someone above her and she said there was nobody. Bad way to do business, I did end up signing my son but I will not do it again and for sure I will make sure to let people know to stay away from this place.

I wasn't expecting much since given the area and was pleasantly surprised to see suggested exercises on the white board and lots of the same free weight equipment that I'm used too. This Y could use a face lift...getting rid of the carpet and installing a newer gym floor alone would do wonders as I can live with the equipment they have. I was hoping to discover some classes I could attend however their class schedule varied from the normal since it was the Holiday. I would have loved to get in there on Thanksgiving but they were closed. Knowing my home "Y" just had a large renovation I did not show up here with wild expectations however was bummed that there was no towel service. Whenever I'm in this area I will definitely go back. We don't have kids so I did not pay much attention to the grounds in that regard or other activities but the "Y" has a long standing seal of approval for these sorts of things. The "Y" in general is a great place for families to participate in and can benefit on all levels.
