After hearing so many wonderful things about Jacque's Pastry Shop in Suncook, NH and enjoying several of their cakes we confidently ordered a gluten-free wedding cake for our son's wedding. Based on Jacque's reputation and our experience with their cakes we did not visit the shop to taste their gluten-free offerings. The cake was nicely decorated. Unfortunately, it was one of the the biggest disappointments of an otherwise beautiful day. The cake was EXTREMELY dry, to the point of staleness. Our guests took a bite and pushed it aside. Several members of our family remarked that it was very dry. We understand that gluten-free baking can be challenging, but we've had many excellent gluten-free cakes elsewhere. Given Jacque's reputation and the premium price we paid, we expected a much higher-quality product. The customer service afterward was even more disappointing. I contacted the bakery and spoke to Jacque directly, twice. I requested at least a 50% refund or a credit for a non gluten free cake, believing either of these options was a fair resolution. Jacque responded by raising his voice and saying "absolutely not, it's not my fault". Then added "I just had surgery". My response was, "you are the business owner, so yes, it is your fault." Jacque stated that they buy a mix from a manufacturer that he did not name. I was shocked by both his response and lack of empathy for such an important occasion. I have never left a negative review for any business but couples deserve to know what our experience with gluten free was like. We trusted Jacque's with an important part of our son's wedding, and both the cake and the way our concerns were handled fell far short of our expectation. read more

Did a tasting for our wedding cake because I love buttercream frosting. When they gave us a sliver of their cake it was moist butvthe frosting tasted like I was eating a stick of butter.i was looking for a similar frosting that my aunt used to make and it was buttercream. I asked if they had any other buttercream frosting and explained it I was told to get a cake from Market Basket. Rude people and awful frosting. We went with 3 sisters they give you full cupcakes for your tasting and the cake is moist and the frosting is incredible. They are in Dover NH. I do not and will never go to Jacques pastry shop ever again. Terrible experience and a waste of time. read more

Jacques was the bakery that we used as part of our all inclusive venue package. They made our wedding cake to absolute perfection. I showed them a photo of my design and it was made spot on. The cake was also really good. We went with various tiers of chocolate, raspberry and vanilla. If had fresh flowers and eucalyptus. It was made so perfectly! When I saw it I was floored because it looked even better in real life, than the photo I'd shown them. Jacques delivered the complete wrong cake to my friends wedding and were extremely rude when it was brought to their attention. They said they never got her order from the venue so they just made something up without even calling. Through the whole process they were homophobic and asked my two clearly female lesbian friends which one should be the husband on their paperwork. The wrong cake was a deliberate homophobic attack. The cake was lacking flavor and tasted like it was from a box mix. It was awful. I would never recommend Jacques to anyone. Please get your cakes and baked goods somewhere else. read more

We had such a great experience with Jacques for our wedding! We are big sweets people and wanted a variety of desserts, besides a small cake, and Jacques more than delivered. Fantastic. I can't rave enough about this pastry shop. I came in in search of a birthday cake and based on Yelp reviews, thought this was going to be it. Boy, was I right! Thank you Yelpers for keeping this place at the top of the search results! I opted for a carrot cake (and got a hazelnut creme one just to have it on hand!). When I brought it out during the party, it was the highlight of the night. Everyone talked about it, everyone wanted a taste and seconds and even though we had half of it left over, it didn't last the entire week with only 2 people living in the household. ACE OF CAKES WATCH OUT! Because Jacques and his team are taking over the extreme cake scene! My wedding was on June 11th at the New England Aquarium in Boston, a good 45+ minutes away. After trying the Plain Jane mass-marketed cakes at Konditormeister, and a couple other bakeries, we made the trek into Suncook, NH to try out Jacques. Let me warn you-- my husband and I wanted a cake that would "WOW" everyone by being different. No fondant flowers, or white buttercream icing. It's not our style. As soon as we walked in, we were FLOORED by a LOBSTER POT with a bride and groom lobster perched inside. (How appropriate, for the NEAQ...AND the fact lobsters mate for life.) From it, chocolate, and fondant oysters, seaweed and shells. The pot looked exactly like a blue enameled pot used for a New England clambake! At that moment, we called to CANCEL our other bakery appointments in Boston. We have found THE ONE. In addition, we ordered a smaller groom's cake shaped like a Chinese take-out box. Sugar noodles flowed out of it's top, and everything on it was edible! The detailing was flawless. The delivery charge was a bit pricey (I think it was over $100 if not $200) but the cakes themselves came in way under budget (go figure, it's NH not MA!) and there was no sales tax if I remember correctly. (Sorry, I have wedding amnesia after doing all that planning, I must have blocked that stressful part of my life out.) The cakes arrived in pristine condition-- the cake was moist and delicious. Jacque's Pastry created the cake for my wedding day. They had a huge selection of cake designs to choose from. We also had a very fun and delicious cake tasting. The cake was delivered right on time and the guests devoured our cake! Our venue said they've never seen cake disappear that fast. We chose one layer of chocolate cake with nutella filling, one layer of red velvet with cream cheese fillng, and the third layer was chocolate and vanilla with chocolate mousse filing. The cake was so good that we couldn't even save the top layer; we ate it with our families the next day! We will definitely go back to Jacque's Pastry for our one year anniversary to purchase a smaller cake to celebrate. read more

They made the wrong cake for my Daughter's 16 th brithday. We asked for astrological signs and stars with a sunflower on the side of the cake. And instead they added plantes and put no effort into the signs or the sunflower they did not put stars on instead they used sparkle spray. We were very clear and I did bring it home and asked my other daughter if it was wright and she said no. Mined you I had people waiting so I couldn't come back with no cake. So I just took it and called after verifying with my other daughter. The young lady who I told I would be leaving a bad review could have cared less. Jacques Pastries was a recommended wedding cake vendor from our venue and included in our package. Due to Covid our cake tasting was a "to-go" version, withan assortment of preselected cakes. We loved everything in our tasting which made it difficult to decide what to pick. We chose to have a small cake to cut (chocolate w/ peanut butter buttercream and ganache) and to have four different types of cupcakes (red velvet w/ old fashiond sweet icing, white w/ Bailey's buttercream, chocolate w/ peanut butter buttercream and white w/ cookies & cream buttercream). Jacques' staff was very easy to work with and responded to our questions promptly. On our wedding day everything was delicious, and our guests loved the cupcakes! I had such a great tasting experience here. I am planning a wedding, and was looking all over NH for the right cake or cupcake location. Jacques was just wonderful - the woman helping us was so sweet, and incredibly helpful. She gave us huge samples of some of the basics, and then a variety of fillings and icings to try. She made recommendations as to combinations, and brought out additional samples of anything we were interested in. There was absolutely no pressure to book right then- she just explained the prices for everything, and the process. I had such a great experience that I did end up putting a deposit down for my wedding cake while there, because it's clear I'll be in great hands with Jacques. And of course I have to mention, the cakes, fillings, and icings were DELICIOUS. I had done a few tastings prior to this, and they were good, but this was in another league. This pastry shop is hands down the best one in New Hampshire! For almost any celebration we buy our cakes and sweets there. We have been ordering all the birthday cakes for both of my kids for the last 7 years, and the cakes are phenomenal: the presentation, the details, the taste. These are literally works of art. Every cake we order is custom ordered, and every time it is outstanding. The most importantly they taste fantastic, keep losing for days and store well to be enjoyed after the occasion. When I lived in Concord New Hampshire, during a brief exile from Cambridge Mass, I became a huge fan of Jacques after hearing a number of raves. Jacques raises cake making and cake decorating to an art. I'd happily make the drive there to pick up cakes and other baked treats. Jacques specialty is stunningly beautiful special occasion cakes. Jacques was one thing I definitely missed when I returned to my hometown. Last month, when a friend from New Hampshire told me that Jacques' had agreed to donate a cake for a charity event I organized, I was psyched. It was simply described as a "flat cake," but when I opened the box, it took my breath away. Our group's new logo was recreated with incredible detail - colors done perfectly. (Confession: I actually thought the new logo sucked until I saw how incredible it looked on the cake). The cake totally stole the show. I had to hold and pose the cake for dozens of cameras and a long line formed even before I started to cut it - the entertainment was ignored. I thought the cake was way to big, but it was gone in flash. It tasted as great as it looked and people were back in line for seconds before the original line had diminished. It's expensive by small town New Hampshire standards, but incredibly reasonable compared to big city shops, but worth it by any standard.. read more

Jacques made our wedding cake this past weekend. My poor Mother-In-Law with three boys was never prepared for any wedding planning, but she was awesome and planned the entire reception. She was so worried about cake purchasing and according to her Jacques made her feel more than comfortable. We ended up with an INCREDIBLY delicious 3 tiered cake. When the person in charge of picking up the cake for my husband's surprise party for 70 people forgot to pick it up, not one, but three people called me after hours. So pleased with this shop. I was looking for a cake decorator to help with a unicorn cake in the Manchester area for a 4th birthday, and found this place through a google search. Spoke with the team via email and on the phone. The order process was quick and easy and the team was super responsive. I had no idea just how good of a shop this was til I went to pick up the cake and the place was buzzing with cake consultations for all sorts of events. The display cakes looked amazing, really beautiful. I was more than happy with how our cake turned out. It was delicious to boot. The frosting was very light, not too heavy not too sweet and the cake was moist. I was looking for a special cake for my 2nd anniversary and after finding Jacques Pastry Shop I was very excited! Perusing their website I was blown away by their cake sculpting and looked forward to surprising my wife. I had them craft a 10" round, 2 layer cake with a 3D sculpted design based off a drawing of us as bears. It was red velvet cake with a blackberry cream filling and cost $200 dollars. Then the day finally came! The Good: The sculpt was amazingly well done!! I was very impressed and knew this was the main reason for the price. The little details they took from the drawing and incorporated into the sculpt were especially note worthy. They definitely do not skimp when it comes to the sculpting of the outside of the cake! They made sure to point out things like the two pins holding on some ribbon trim on the bottom, as well as the candles being held in place with toothpicks, so we wouldn't accidentally eat them. They also recommended letting the cake sit for a bit so it would come to room temp and be more easily enjoyed. The Bad: After being blown away by the look of the cake we were ready to dive in and have a couple slices. Upon cutting into the cake I realized the actual cake part was much smaller and was covered on the top and sides by almost half an inch of sculpted frosting. That wouldn't have been much of an issue though if the frosting actually tasted good. It was bland, almost flavorless, and felt like I was eating soft cheese. The blackberry cream filling between the two cake layers was exactly the same, except it had a little more taste to it. I don't know if this is really the reason they say to let it sit, to have these soften up and integrate better with the cake but we had it out for almost 2 hours before eating and it didn't help. To top it off it was as if the cake was put together on an assembly line. Each part was like a totally separate piece. When we cut into the cake the outer frosting would start to separate from the cake and the two cake layers would start to fall away from the inner filling. It's as if they put one cake layer down, carved a giant slice of blackberry filling off of a large pre-made cylinder of it, laid it down and put the other cake later on top. Call me crazy but every other cake I've every had the frosting and inner filling was cream like, not cheese like. Neither of them integrated with the red velvet at all and each slice would just fall to pieces on our plate with each stab of the fork. For a comparison my wife had gotten me a $40 custom cake when we lived in Upstate NY last year. It had no sculpted designs but what it did have was incredible taste! We ate the 6", 3 layer round over two days because it was so good we couldn't NOT eat it. This $200 cake is the complete opposite of everything that $40 cake was, taste wise. Its frosting and filling was seamlessly integrated with the cake and made perfect, moist slices that were a joy to eat.... this cake here, not even close. In closing I would say tone down the frosting. I know you need a surface to put your sculpt on but you don't need half an inch. Focus more on baking the cake rather than crafting the sculpt. The thing that is going to bring people back more is your taste. If I can't order a plain old cake that tastes good here then there is no reason to ever return. If it weren't for the sculpt this rating would be a 1 or a 2. In short I find in my first impression that Jacques cakes are very well sculpted but not very well crafted. read more

We got our Wedding cake here as part of our wedding package from the Portsmouth Harbor Event Center. I was nervous at first that I did not have any other bakery options but after having our tasting with them I was sold. I had to choose from a pre-selected design book, but there was MANY options... and if I wanted to upgrade I could. We chose a 4 tierd cake that was simple and elegant. Again, I was scepticle of not having a cake covered in fondant, as I have had bad expereinces with tierd buttercreamed cake, but they assured us, that the cake would be AS BEAUTIFUL on arrival as it was when it left the store. Our cake had fresh flowers surrounding the base and on the top tier as our topper. It was breathtaking! They even let us have 2 different flavors of cake with different fillings... they told us we could have had every tier be a different flavor if we really wanted, but we chose to only have 2. First flavor was to be the bottom & Top tier... (I wanted to eat this flavor!) It was a white cake with orange preserves... YUM... Then the other 2 tiers, were an almond cake with rasberry preserves, and dark chocolate ganache! YUM YUM! The guests LOVED it! So good! I would absolutely recommend them to anyone!
