Driving through on our way to Houston and needed sustenance. Yelp once again came through! Y'all. If you aren't here, WHY?!?! There's no reason this place should be nearly empty during lunch! Fresh and delicious food. Service was friendly and quick. And such a cute spot! If you're driving through town, do yourself a favor and get off the beaten path a little and have some falafel and Turkish coffee!

Wife and I made this our First stop in Van Alstyne. She ordered the Falafel platter with a side of greek fries and I had their gyro platter. Holy Moly !!! We have had Mediterranean all across the U.S. But, here we found the BEST Falafels and AWESOME Gyros. Now, we're off to visit to visit our daughter and son-in-law with their 3 girls. We're ALL going back to Jafar together for another wonderful meal

First time driving out to Van Aylstine, and I stumbled upon this place with a friend. This place had really tasty food. Nothing fancy inside or with the menu; just good food. There were two people working and they were great! The gyro plate was just delicious. Very fresh! Honestly it's the best I've had since moving to Texas. Great portions to price. Also tried the Turkish coffee that was delicious as well. Definitely will make it back out this way to try some different items. Great gem of a place!

First time trying this place out. I ordered the gyro salad, hummus sampler, dolmas, and falafel. Humans was my favorite. I enjoyed the 4 distinct flavors. The salad was flavorful and filling. The dolmas were tangy, filling and fresh. The falafel was crunchy on the outside some moisture inside. I like the shape of them especially for dipping. I enjoyed this food. I can tell there has been some thought put into it. I will be sure to revisit soon.

Food was yummy, wife enjoyed her meal also. Great hummus , good meat whatever it is. Coke in cans, no fountain drinks

An amazing authentic Mediterranean restaurant in small town USA. The ambiance is casual and cute. Very clean and the staff was very helpful and friendly. My husband ordered the spicy curry dinner with basmati rice, roasted potatoes and Greek salad. He loves the flavor but the spicy wasn't quiet as hot as he would have preferred. I tried the chicken shawarma with rice, roasted potatoes and Greek salad. Absolutely delicious. We will definitely make this a regular stop on our lists! read more

My husband and I discovered a treasure chest while out today .Jafar's is a Mediterranean restaurant in Van Alstyne Texas , and what a rare find! I had the gyro salad and my husband had a gyro platter. the food was wonderful, the service was fantastic, the people are so warm and welcoming .not much of an atmosphere but you don't always come to get an atmosphere. I have come to different restaurants were the atmosphere was very nice and the food was not all that! These precious people are wonderful cooks and very hospitable! I highly recommend them and my husband and I will be back again for another wonderful meal. read more

I stopped by for lunch today. My first visit in. The reviews looked good and I was craving gyro. I got the Gyro pita lunch with Greek salad. I enjoyed it. The portion was great for lunch. The meat was tasty and not as heavily seasoned as some. The salad was iceberg, but very fresh and tasty dressing with the freshest cheese. The tsatziki was great, not the cheap ranch substitute some places use. I'll definitely come back again! read more

My sister recommended we go here for lunch. It was absolutely delicious! I had a glass of hot mint tea before my meal and it was very pleasant. We shared the hummus sampler platter. The varieties were all very good and the pita bread was fresh and warm. We also shared the mixed grill platter (gyro and chicken) with lentil soup, roasted potatoes and Greek salad. The lentil soup was a tad on the salty side, but it didn't stop me from eating the whole bowl. The taste otherwise was clean and light. The roasted potatoes were well seasoned and the salad was very fresh. The place was clean and spacious, and the two young men working today were delightful and personable. I work in Anna, TX, which is a far cry from the culinary options that you get at The Shops of Legacy where i worked before, but i am slowly discovering all these gems as i explore the environs. Located off highway 5, the store seems a little to big for the number of tables, almost like there is a dance floor in the middle. But i digress, it is clean, and the furniture is functional. You got to the back of the store and place your order. I got the three item special, which had hummus, salad, potatoes, beef gyro and pita. The gyro was well flavored, and the hummus smooth and what i would expect. The salad was fresh which is a good sign since i came in well after the lunch rush. There was enough food for 2 people and probably a 3rd if you're not trying to gorge yourselves. Good food, done well, and i will definitely be back for lunch! read more

What a charming little country "Mediterranean" Grill in the heart of Van Alstyne. Building a new home in Van Alstyne, and in no small part due to the potential for revitalization of this quaint downtown area. When you walk inside- it isn't much to look at- just a few tables and a few people behind an exposed kitchen area. You dine literally in the kitchen- or should I say the kitchen is in the dining room. A bit off putting at first- but everyone was super friendly and eager to take care of the customer. At lunch time on this weekday (Tuesday) there was Considerable traffic- not even a single clean table. Had to wait for it to be cleaned. Once seated, ordered a standard Gyro plate which came with a choice of sides- I chose the rice. The Great: The Gyro, The Pita Bread and the Ziziki Sauce. Simply amazing for the money- as good as I've had and better than most specialty places in the big city. Well done. The Good: Everyone was friendly, not a chain, supporting local business. The Bad: Just a touch of a few unfortunate things- dirty tables, etc. However- I hesitate to mention this simply because they look like they are working as hard as they can- and the prices are so reasonable it's really looking hard to find something to complain about. Only giving 4 stars at the moment simply because I have only tried a single dish. If that isn't an aberration, and I will be back- I will add another star! read more

Such a nice change from BBQ and Mexican food (although I love both!). This Mediterranean restaurant was a nice gem especially since I am new to the area. I had the gyros dinner platter with 3 sides (Greek salad, rice & hummus). The gyro meat was really flavorful and tender. The hummus was tangy and smooth. The rice was cooked perfectly. The salad was just right with olives, feta and really good salad dressing. The pita was fresh and soft. The portion was quite large so I had plenty for lunch tomorrow. The service was great and the venue was really clean. I'm glad I don't have to drive to McKinney to find homemade Mediterranean food! read more

Hands down the best Mediterranean joint in north Texas. Had the dolmas which are lemony like I like. The chicken Shawarma wrap was seasoned perfectly and tender. The regular hummus was good and large portion. The hot mint made it an authentic experience. I could drive 30min to my south, through horrible traffic, to the shops at Legacy for food not quite as good and double the cost. I can drive 25 min northeast, through the country, to downtown Van Alstyne for some great food at great prices. Go check them out. read more

My husband and I ordered take out yesterday evening. We bought a mixture of different things to try - gyro platter, dolmas, hummus sampler and Mediterranean salad. It was so wonderful! The portions were very generous so we had 2 meals from the order. The hummus sampler was exceptionally good....they all were very different - we couldn't decide on a favorite. We'll be back! Van Alstyne is fortunate to have such different cuisine as this. We wish it were in Sherman but was very simple to swing by there on the way back from Dallas. read more

Heard about this place and figured we would give it a go. I do have to say for the price you can't go wrong. Four of us for dinner with an appetizer for $60.00 is a great deal. Meats were great except for Chicken. The chicken had GREAT flavor but was dry. So it's tough to rate it 5stars. However, Gyro plate and sheesh kabab plate were very good. Nice people working there. Literally a must for anyone in Van Alstyne. We came over from Celina and it was worth the drive. read more

The lovely Ms. Jones and her rock star husband decided to spend this exquisite Summer day antiquing and cruised into Van Alstyne to see if anything there would pique their interest. While there weren't any treasures to take home, we did collect an amazing memory from our lunch at Jafar's. Located inside a very old bank building, this little Mediterranean gem is definitely worth a visit. Simple decor, great service, tasty food at a very reasonable price (both of us had lunch for $24.00 which includes tip). BYOB We will be back. read more

Because those fries? Not "shareable." Not "optional." These are crack fries (respectfully). Crispy, hot, loaded with feta and that house sauce doing its thing. Gone in record time. No regrets. Everyone else branched out with different bowls and salads--chicken bowls over basmati, fresh Mediterranean salads stacked with feta, olives, all the good stuff--but me? I stay loyal. The Spicy 360 wrap is my go-to--and let's be very clear--gyro meat only (as it should be ). And somehow... today it leveled up. Like, I took a bite and had a full "hold on" moment. The gyro meat was juicy, perfectly seasoned, and paired with those fresh jalapeños, sautéed onions and mushrooms? Unreal. Then the house sauce comes in and just ties the whole thing together like it knows it's the main character. I genuinely didn't think it could get better, and yet--here we are. Now--important note from your resident "dressing on the side" girl: if you forget to ask for light sauce or on the side, they do not play about it it can feel like a lot. BUT for the rest of my group? That sauce is basically a personality trait. The kind of "I'd throw my whole diet away for this" situation. So just know yourself and plan accordingly--but absolutely try the house sauce on something. It's too good not to. And the staff? Always kind, always helpful, never making you feel rushed even when it's busy. It's one of those places where you can sit, eat, talk a little shop, laugh a lot, and forget you're technically on a lunch break. By 6 PM, only half of it had arrived, and when we asked about the missing items, they wouldn't honor the happy hour pricing even though this was the first thing we ordered when we arrived. The meatballs were what we were most excited to try, but after waiting 40 minutes (with all of our other food already out), they still hadn't arrived. On top of that, our drinks took over 30 minutes and multiple reminders to finally show up. The happy hour deals for drinks were great, drinks were 1/2 off and they do $5 Lalo tequila. Maybe it was just an off day, but between the slow service, missing items, and mixed-up pricing, the experience was pretty disappointing - especially considering how beautiful the space is.

It was wonderful to find this gem so close to home: 15 minutes down US 75 from Sherman. The food is great and reminds me of the time I spent in Germany where Greek restaurants are common (and good). I've missed that a lot. I had the Gyros platter which comes with three sides. I selected the Hummus, basmati rice and Greek salad. (Other options were lentil soup and roasted potatoes.)
