Taking the MBEs in the bathtub!
    Maddi W.

If you want to pass the CA Bar Exam do yourself a favor and sign up for tutoring with Jay! You will not regret it. There is a reason that Jay is one of the top tutors in CA. Jay offers individualized study plans, all the way down to a personalized schedule. The schedule that Jay creates for you is manageable but holds you accountable. Jay is the perfect combination of support and tough love. His essay grading motivated me to be better each week, and allowed me to be competitive with myself, as I was always trying to beat last week's score. Jay's approach to PTs and the essays are so spot on. I don't think I could have passed without his help in learning how to write for the bar exam. Over the course of my time with Jay, he gave me so many PTs that I was confident with whatever the CA Bar was going to throw my way. When a fire alarm went off during the MBEs Jay was my first phone call and he talked me down from having a nervous breakdown and got me refocused for the next set of MBEs. I ended up having to take the exam in the bathtub because it was the only place in the hotel room where the sound of the fire alarm wasn't loud. I wanted to give up- but Jay told me to take a few minutes, collect myself, and do what I spent months learning how to do. Without Jay, I probably would have given up. Jay also offered a payment plan, which was wonderful. The first time I took the bar I talked myself out of a tutor because of the price. But In reality, it's (way) more expensive to take the CA Bar exam multiple times then it would be to invest your time with Jay, so he can get you to a place where you can pass Jay will give you everything that you need to pass- which includes the materials but most importantly, the confidence. .

    Exam Results

Do yourself a favor, hire Jay. You will pass the bar if you put in the work and follow his instruction. There is no substitute for hard work on the bar exam. However, I took the bar twice: the first time with Themis, and the second time with Jay. I passed the second time. I firmly believe that hard work is not the issue for most bar takers--we all graduated from law school! The biggest obstacle most will face, in my opinion, is how to prepare: what to do, how to do it, and when. The big box prep courses will send you a $&@! ton of materials and make you feel like "Wow! Now that's money well spent! Look at all I'm getting!" The truth is, you don't need all of that crap. It's too much. You run the risk, as I did the first time, of getting lost in a sea of materials and getting overwhelmed. You undoubtedly will put forth the necessary effort no matter what prep course you take. That's not going to be your problem. If you want to ensure your efforts are going towards the skills you need to pass the bar--and pass the bar only--hire Jay. If you want to reinvent the wheel and organize unnecessary amounts of information that isn't properly distilled at all and spend your efforts that way instead of actually preparing for the exam, buy BarBri, Themis, or the like. Jay will give you exactly what you need and tell you to buy a few supplements, like adaptibar (which I also highly recommend), and he will brutalize your ego with invaluable feedback BEFORE the exam. You might hate Jay during this process and awake from nightmares crying and cursing his name. Fear not--those are all good signs. Jay is a compassionate, caring, straight shooter. He's direct because let's be frank, you don't have time to think or care about your feelings. Do you want to pass? Good. Then put your feelings aside and do exactly as Jay says. The bar is a high stress endeavor. Get used to it. This is boot camp. The funny thing is, by exam day, everything becomes fun. That's when you'll know you're ready--when it becomes a fun game of crushing the materials that used to haunt you; when you read the answer choices to the MBE and know the answers before reading the fact patterns you'll know what I'm talking about. Do yourself a favor, hire Jay. He's the supercar of bar prep. ...yes, that comes with a price. But it's high performance. The others aren't cheap either and you're only getting a Ford Focus without any focus. How much did you spend on law school? Oh yeah... that's right.

    Third email

I retained Jay because of his stellar reviews on Yelp, but I didn't pass the Ca Bar using his services. What I liked: *I had around 4 Skype sessions with him, with the first three being helpful. He helped me understand what the bar graders wanted to see with the analysis part when it comes to the IRAC on the essays. What I didn't like: *He is very expensive and charged me $7,000. For what I got out of his service I don't think it was worth 7k. *He is very nice at first, but when he takes your money he's not so nice after. *I got very little help on the mbes *He promised he would help me navigate the PT's online format and he never followed through *some of the feedback on the essays were helpful and some were cookie cutter responses *he offers only (2) 30 minute phone calls. I didn't want to use these up because he seemed busy and I didn't want to be a bother *I had emergency surgery and had to go under anesthesia. He was clearly upset that he had to move his schedule around to accommodate me. So he books our Skype call for the day after my surgery when I told him that I would clearly be sedated. I thought that was a jerk move. *when results were released, he sent me a cookie cutter email asking about my bar results. When I told him I didn't pass he replied with a cookie cutter response saying that he was sorry and that he will give me a constructive assessment of what happened and how to make it happen on the next go. I sent him my essays and bar results and I've never heard from him since. Once he took my money and realized I failed he disappeared. You feel devastated that you spent months studying for difficult exam and spending $7k on someone who can't even tell you where you went wrong with the essays you got back from the bar. How am I supposed to know where I went wrong or how do I improve if you just disappear? Doesn't even give me access to his materials after results and changes his passwords to his materials. What is so upsetting is the pretext to emailing me asking how I did under the guise of concern and care; while really he is reaching out to get a positive Yelp review from those who passed. The reason why he has so many good reviews is because the people that pass write a review. The people that don't pass don't put a review.

I highly doubt I would have passed the CA Bar without Daniel's methods and guidance. Details -- I've been practicing corporate law at a large law firm for over 16 years. Because life happens, I needed to relocate to Los Angeles, which means I needed to take the CA bar exam in order to continue my practice in California. I haven't thought about a bar exam or 95%+ of any law school curriculum/subjects since I graduated in 2008. In addition to the pressures of being a partner at a large law firm, I was also a new dad and trying to juggle personal and professional obligations, all while wondering how in the world I would pass this bar exam. Cue Daniel! Daniel's methods and his guidance really helped me get over this major hurdle. He has detailed subject matter knowledge and really knows how to personalize a plan and schedule that worked well for me. Daniel also held me accountable when I would fall behind on my study schedule, which is really the boost I needed. I can't thank Daniel enough for his dedication, personalized plan, incredible attitude, and intelligence. He gets 10 out of 5 stars from me. p.s., you have to do the work if you want to pass. Absolutely no short cuts at all when it comes to the bar exam and the time needed to pass, but Daniel can certainly help!

Math-for-Girls is a life-changer…read more After receiving a discalculia diagnosis in 8th grade for my daughter, I found Vali and math for girls. What a game changer! After trying different interventions and math tutors over the years, I really didn't have much hope for my daughter ever making progress in math after receiving an official diagnosis for a specific math disability. Vali was very clear that she wasn't specially trained to work with discalculic kids, but we decided to give her a try anyways. My daughter was skeptical about another tutor and not excited about extra math after school. I'm so glad we gave Vali a try. My daughter learned more in 9 months with Vali than she had in 9 years of regular math class. Even more importantly, she is feeling so much more confident about doing math and feels like she has an array of strategies to approach a challenging problem. The engagement and confidence she is now feeling in regard to math is remarkable. We have now transitioned to Tia, one of the terrific Math-for-Girls tutors, to continue remediating middle school math while also supporting the transition into High School math. My daughter enjoys her time with Vali and Tia so much - actually looking forward to math, working independently on problems/skills between sessions, and is proud of her progress. Vali and Tia are both so positive in their teaching approach and really paying attention to where a concept is shaky or understanding may be incomplete. They are terrific at communicating what has been covered and setting expectations. My only wish is that we had found Math-for-Girls earlier. If you have a math avoidant student - call Vali!

I was referred to him when my son was in a crisis--literally flunking Pre-Calculus and in danger of getting an F for the semester. My son was reluctant to go to a tutor, but Ender said--"look, you will know if this is helping in just a few sessions," and he was right. We saw vast improvement after only three sessions. With Ender's guidance and explanation, my son went from an F to an A for the trimester and got a B for the semester. After that, he never wanted to head into a math final without a tune -up session from Ender. He did very well in math and AP Stat throughout the rest of his high school years. So when my younger son tested into the very rigorous Accelerated Math course his Freshman year at Lowell, I knew what to do. I had him start with Ender from the beginning and he was one of the few to emerge from that class with an "A." We also asked Ender to tutor our sons for the SAT and SATIIs and he helped them pull down a surprising 800 in the SAT II--surprising because my son doesn't think of himself as a "math student." Ender is kind, patient, rational, and as my sons say, "just a great teacher." Everyone I have ever sent to him has been very happy with the results. Some of my friends decline to go because he is not the least expenseive tutor in town, but I want to say "He is worth every penny!" So often, I've seen friends spend lots of time and frustration on a less accomplished tutor--with mediocre results. Ender delivers results. Plus, my sons really like him. He's low-key and professional, and he eases kid's fears. I cannot tell you how grateful I am to have a resource like Ender for my sons.

Looking back, I think Gina's focus on strategy is what sets her apart. She knows what the exam is testing, and it has nothing to do with intelligence. She will show you how to hack the exam, even if you forget black-letter law. This approach also helped me mentally, as I could feel more confident that whatever came my way (ahem, BA as the first essay, lol), I could get through it and pass. Another thing that set Gina apart from other tutors was the amount of work that she put into essay feedback. She provided line-by-line feedback, which helped me quickly grasp the appropriate way to write bar essays. Her feedback also helped me structure essays in a way that would score me the most points. I also appreciated being able to submit rewrites of an essay to make sure I got it perfect the second time. Gina was also easy to approach, empathic, and really cared about my progress. She is honest about your performance, but continues to be encouraging and positive even if you're struggling with something. She also takes her time and never rushes you. Other tutors I approached had strict tutorial time limits and contact hours. I never felt rushed with Gina or like I couldn't contact her with a question. Another thing I appreciated was that Gina really pushed me to get the work done! I sent her weekly schedules which really helped me be productive and limit time wasting. I also really appreciated the amount of material that Gina provided me with. The resources that she offers her students is really quite extensive. I ended up using majority of it at some time or another during my study process - it really was invaluable. I have no hesitations recommending Gina to law students or foreign attorneys - I'm very glad I had the opportunity to work with her.

I obviously hired Gina (thus the review) and paid her way to little for her services. With her help and a lot of hard work I passed the exam with the lowest pass rate in the history of bar exams (26.8%) -Feb 2020. There is no way that would have happened without Gina's help. Why did I choose Gina? I had three requirements going into hiring a tutor, Gina met them all and the others did not. First she has a formal course which she provides and a structure to follow which seemed to me at the time to be both educationally effective and effective at keeping me on track (it turned out to be very effective - I passed the bar - and I always knew what I needed to be working on). Her structure also contains reporting and tracking mechanisms to keep everyone on the same page and on track. My second requirement was that the tutor be able and willing to be flexible and to customize to my needs (not just a "class" with review sessions once a week). Gina was able to dissect where I was having disconnects (between brain & keyboard) and created customized flow-sheets for me to use on practice essays. My third requirement was that I had to like/feel comfortable with the person in the initial 'consult' as I was going to be dealing with them a lot and I liked Gina right away. Then she started telling me how bad my essays were and I had some doubts, but then she was right so I liked her again. Value proposition: A++++ feedback. I got a great deal, I really I feel like I got one over on her considering her time and skill set... I never have to save up again to take another CA bar exam, take time off, ignore my family and my poor lonely pooch. My mom will never be sad for me again when I don't pass (she did cry when I passed but that was good). Having passed the bar my income just jumped overnight to over 10x her fee every year...forever. Man Up: You have to do the work, think of Gina as the Boss and just suck it up. I did everything, kept all the logs, did the rewrites, if she told me to do it either I did it or we found something that would work for me. The essay rewrites are a huge help, I would never have actually rewritten a practice essay on my own and this turned out to be one of the biggest learning opportunities. Using her MBE tracking guide really helped me focus and be efficient with my time . The last couple week before the test I was crushing the practice MBE exams. I used adaptibar and found the two (Adaptibar & Gina) worked perfectly. If anyone want to speak with me Gina can give you my contact info. This is my first yelp review and I don't feel like posting "I failed 3x" to the whole world.
