Growing up in the 90's I listed to Alanis Morissette a lot, and still do today. She is a powerful female artist. It was great seeing her songs come to life on Broadway! All of the actors and actresses gave her songs justice for sure, with putting their own spin on her songs. It takes absolute talent to make an entire music album into a play. I was singing in my seat the entire time. The story line is great, real, and raw. I would not recommend bringing children or young teens here as there is talk of rape, drug use and sex. The actors and actresses had an amazing flow, and worked well together. It was as if they have been working together for years. Such chemistry that came alive on stage. My favorite was "Jo." She has such a powerful voice, it gave me chills. Her performance of "You Outta Know" was AMAZING, and during the performance I saw, she received a standing ovation from everyone in the theater. I still have chills from hearing her sing. This play was simply amazing, I'd see it again...and again. read more

Location: it is located where all the broadway shows are, the seats are comfortable and the theatre is huge. Bathroom is downstairs and it is very clean. Performance: the performers are amazing and the way they sang Alanis Morissette songs are unbelievably great! My favorites are Jo and Phoenix they were really good! The only thing that I kinda don't like is the story itself, it is kinda shallow and expected but otherwise a great show! If your a fan of Alanis Morissette, watch this! 3.5 stars In an astonishing twist of fate, 90s screen queen Alicia Silverstone sat a couple rows from us at "Jagged Little Pill," the rock musical featuring song from Alanis Morissette's angsty 1995 album. I'm transported back to a time of baby tees, plaid flannels, & platform shoes -- all worn together. The show's plot goes like this -- Connecticut mom pens her annual Christmas brag letter about her seemingly perfect family, but of course, we learn they are a deeply-flawed suburban foursome that hide secrets from one another. Morissette's lyrics perfectly suit the characters' predicaments, but none as explosive & heart-wrenching as Jo's performance of "You Oughta Know." She received a well-deserved standing ovation in the middle of the show. My 3-star rating isn't for the performances, as every cast member played their part incredibly well; I think the show tried to incorporate too much intensity about social injustices in two hours. The few moments of levity in the beginning & right at the end do not make up for this saturation of gloom. Through protests held by Frankie, the adopted activist daughter, the audience is bombarded with a plethora of heaviness on top of the main storylines being date rape & drug addiction. No one can accuse me of being squeamish, but there is no light, feel-good place to rest your mind. read more

This is the last major event I got to go to before the shutdown. In fact, I was the only person I saw in the entire theater wearing a mask to see this. But mask wearing aside, this was actually a decent show where the wokeness actually worked as it fit in with the legend that is Alanis Morrissette and her first album. This show does incorporate songs that aren't on the "Jagged Little Pill" album but it actually did a pretty good job of incorporating the theme and music catalog. This is the story of a suburban family in Connecticut with a hard working father, a perfectionist mother (Mary Jane), a son under endless pressure to be (Perfect) and their adopted black daughter caught in white suburbia with a best friend with benefits (a riotgrrl who could have been a younger version of the You Oughta Know heroine). Various twists and turns impact this suburban world. I wouldn't recommend taking young children or anyone younger than 13/14 to this show due to the content but if you like the feminist spirit, you'll probably enjoy this one. I have to give a special shoutout to the actress who got to sing "You Oughta Know," the iconic song from this album. After the daughter's "best friend" sees her + a guy getting their freak on and the daughter only turns to her AFTER she's run away from home & the guy turns away from her declaration of love, you can feel her pain as she's singing "You Oughta Know." Even if you were against lesbian relationships or weren't a lesbian yourself, you could still feel this young woman's pain and see how she got a raw deal. The audience gave a well deserved standing ovation after this number the night I saw it. Overall, I'm glad I got to see it before everything shut down. read more

I love Alanis Morrisette. I didn't realize the story plot of the musical would be about a suburban family. The musicc and singers were wonderful. Her album gives me nostalgic memories. The plot of the story moved a little slow for me dUring the first half. Altogether it was a 2 and half hour show. There really isn't a bad seat in the house. Every seat was packed! It has been years since I've treated myself to a Broadway show, and I was thrilled to attend this one! Alanis was my hero in 1996. In 2015 I had her on a flight I was working, and I was so shy, the best I could do was: Can I refill your coffee? At any rate, I love her music, so how could I miss this production? At first I was a little underwhelmed. Suburban family in CT. Plot caters to millennials, even though the music caters to Gen X. Yawn. But it speeds up when you start to learn of their dark secrets unraveling. The music seemed to fit in perfectly and the character JoAnn got a standing ovation for her rendition of "You Oughta Know". Well deserved. Theater is typical Broadway theater: cramped and hot. I had an end seat in row P of the orchestra. It wasn't bad. I had tried to enter the lottery, but lost a couple times in a row, so I visited the box office to get this the day-of. If you like Alanis, go! You'll appreciate the music. The story line is just okay, but the music is really what makes this show worth it. read more

This show managed to offend most everyone who is not associated politically with the far left. The music was very good, but I couldn't enjoy it due to the divisive themes and posture. Just horrible. Ahhhh man. I was so excited for this show. I grew up on Alanis' album and am generally pretty obsessed with her. I'm also a huge Dear Evan Hansen fan (have seen it 3x) and got some DEH vibes from some of what I saw online before buying tickets. Well...woof. It pains me to be harsh because I'm a broadway freak and have so much respect for all of the work, blood, sweat and tears that go into putting on a show 8x a week. Well - here are my thoughts. Pros: - The staple Alanis songs were amazing (ironic, Mary Jane, you outta know, etc) and I like how they pulled characters from the songs. - The girl who played Jo STOLE THE SHOW - she's amazing. Her voice is sick and she played her character beautifully. - The cast had amazing energy and clearly are invested in the story they are telling. Cons: - This. Show. Is. Heavy. I consider myself pretty "woke" but this show is just too damn woke. It was hard to focus on one topic among the 20 they tried to address (racism, rape, drugs, etc) - There was comedic relief in the beginning and the end, but a good 2 hours were just dark. - WTF is up with the lighting? They need to give a seizure warning. - Other than Jo, I felt it hard to connect with or root for any of the characters. If you're a mega Alanis fan, go see it now so you can experience the original broadway cast. If you're not a huge fan, save the money and wait for it to go on discount. I think the show will blow up for a bit but die out faster than some of the other big hits with a lot of hype. Looking for a feel good show? Skip. Need to get some angst out? Either blast the original album or go to a women's march. Love you Alanis. I'll stick to your 1995 album though. read more

I think if you grew up in the 90's there is plenty of nostalgia for you in this musical. The actually story line doesn't seem to follow the theme of the original album. Instead you have what appears to be a "normal" suburban family and a tale of their darkest attributes unraveling their lives. It was very well done and the actors did an amazing job. I must admit I really only recognized the most popular songs from that album (Hand in my pocket, you oughta know, you learn, hands clean, thank you etc). But they were definitely enough to keep me going throughout. Interestingly this was the ONLY time I have ever seen a standing ovation in the middle of a performance. It was both annoying and awe inspiring at the same time. I loved the social commentary of the musical and it was refreshing to see one do a more modern taken of social issues. I would recommend this to anyone, if not to learn something about another perspective in life. read more

Absolutely incredible story wrapped in music from a big hit artist. I rarely get lost and completely absorbed in a story but this show is an exception. The artful staging and unique set were added value. I have seen this play twice now and love it. First of all, I saw a touring production in San Francisco. Kudos to a superb group of young actors-- their singing and performance overall was stunningly beautiful, but the libretto was a bit much. It's as if the 'playwright' was trying too hard to shoe-horn every trendy, social networking issue into the story that the effect was exhausting and bit absurd. Secondly, to have teenagers of today belt out such heavy tunes as "you Outta Know" actually made me laugh. (spoiler: the high school girlfriend of gay girlfriend ran away from home for all of three days or so). The intensity was ill-fitted to the situation. Morissette was singing about a painful, young adult relationship--even though she was only in her early 20's. But there is difference between a 16 yr old and a 21 year old. Back then, in the 90's, young people were more mature and autonomous than they are today, or, at least, how they are conveyed to be in dramas of today. This leads to a third problem: the boys in the story come off as helpless feminized, inarticulate children (and the girls are woke and overly vocal). I see this all the time today and it's disturbing. From DEAR EVAN HANSEN, ad infinitum. With so much pressed on to the story, it came off as contrived and way too friendly to the unhealthy social trends of today. I thought this was going to be a show more about Alanis' own journey and that it would take place back in the mid-'90's...but the teenage emphasis and the upper class housewife/addict scenario was silly, and only weakened and cheapened the beauty of Morissette's masterpiece album of which this musical is based. read more

This show was so great. I also had 5th row orchestra so seats don't get better. I thought the production was uplifting even though the storyline(s) were about struggles. The dancing was young and modern. The cast was energetic and seemed to love their roles and being on stage with one another! Besides the fact that it was cold in the theater (we all had our winter coats on!), you can't go wrong with this show if you like new millennia type things or controversial subject matter. Hopefully the heat situation will be resolved eventually! read more

This was probably one of my favorite broadway shows of all time! The entire group of performers were in sync and harmonized songs that I thought only Alanis could sing. It was incredibly humbling and funny at the same time. The young girl Jo and the mother, stole the show. All I can say is WOW! read more

Usually I'd say add a star if you are invested in the artist when a movie or show comes out about them (Freddy Mercury, Elton John, etc) but in this case I subtract 2 stars. The JLP album has perhaps the most authentic, raw and very personal music and lyrics about teenage angst that I've ever heard and was really excited to see a musical about her life and what drove this anger. There is so much there to explore. Instead they chose to go the safe, commercial route about some made up story completely separate from her life, like Mama Mia or Moving Out where the storyline just weaves in and out conveniently through the lyrics but has nothing to do with the artist or intent of the music. I'm sure it will be a commercial hit thought. Great music, that is well performed. Just a massive opportunity missed read more
