Not only did I get to help with the animal chores, Kathryn is also very environmentally conscious as we composted, recycled or re-purposed everything at the ranch. It was a joy helping and I highly recommend making an appointment for an experience. It is also a great place to volunteer if you love animals, Kathryn is a remarkable woman. Kathryn not only loves the animals, she is knowledgeable and kind. I learned so much about the different rescue animals and the conservation efforts the ranch supports. The entire property is beautiful with spectacular views. If you're an animal lover or looking for a unique, educational day trip with the family, I cannot recommend Gress Mountain Ranch enough. We were looking for a day of play, a tricky thing with a Moody Teen and his sidekick, and one that did not cost an arm and a leg. SCFG suggested Savidge, which is near their farm, so off we went. You can tell the place has been doing this for a while, as they had everything well laid out - from parking to activities to shopping. They also had a nice mix of free activities (such as a 'sandbox' full of dried corn that the kids spent over an hour playing happily in) and low- cost activities, the most expensive being $3 for a hayride to a pick-your-own pumpkin patch (cost of pumpkin you pick extra, weighed upon your return). There was mini-golf, shooting plastic balls in air cannons at targets, climbing on farm equipment repurposed as play gyms, going to see and pet baby goats, cow, piglets and see the emu, and of course the decently challenging but not impossible corn maze. Four and a half hours flew by, as the kids went from place to place. They even enjoyed a visit from some of the free-range hens who helpfully picked up any crumbs dropped around the outdoor picnic tables. Food options are as you'd expect - drinks (top price $1.50 for cold bottled water), chips, hot dogs (also $1.50). What I liked was the reasonableness of the items while still allowing the place to make a profit, not the price gouging we see at other farm operations we've been to. As for shopping - they have a beautiful selection of mums, very reasonably priced, and they have some (not an abundance, and again, not overly expensive) other food items like pickled hot peppers, etc. along with a variety of grown-on-site pumpkins, gourds, dried corn and corn stalks. Everyone who worked there was friendly, helpful and patient. We had a relaxing but entertaining day that did not break the bank, and came home with two exhausted and content boys. I have a feeling this place gets nuts in October, so go early in the season unless you don't mind big crowds. Definitely will go back again next year.

A Family Tradition That Has Become Nothing More Than a Money Grab…read more We have been going to Grim's Orchard for well over 15 years to pick our own apples. It has been a family tradition that we looked forward to every year. Their prices have always been on the high side, but this year they have gone completely out of control. A 1/4-peck plastic bag is $11.99, and apparently EVERYONE over the age of 3 is required to purchase a bag. I have a family of five, all over the age of 3, which means it would have cost us nearly $60 just to pick apples. And what do you get for that $11.99? A tiny plastic bag that holds roughly 7 apples. At that point, you are paying an absurd amount of money for the privilege of picking a handful of apples. To make matters worse, the customer experience was incredibly disappointing. There was apparently a tractor and trailer ride, but the employee who sold us our tickets never mentioned it. We didn't see it and had no idea where or when it was happening, so we missed it. There wasn't even adequate signage explaining where to go or what was included. The only reason we knew where to go at all was because we've been coming here for so many years and already knew the layout. What used to feel like a fun, family-oriented fall tradition now feels like a calculated money grab. There is a big difference between charging a fair price for an experience and nickel-and-diming families at every opportunity. After more than 15 years of coming to Grim's, it genuinely saddens me to say this, but we will not be coming back. They have taken something that was once a special family tradition and turned it into an overpriced, frustrating experience. Very disappointing. Sad to see what has happened to a place that used to be part of our family tradition.
