The gym atmosphere is welcoming to all attendees and there is a strong sense of community among the regulars. As for the gym itself, there are lots of heavy bags spaced throughout the gym and two boxing rings against the far wall. This is a place where you will learn real boxing! Most of the gym goers here are men (there are separate kids' classes too) and as a woman, that has never bothered me. Everyone is respectful, helpful, and very kind. People practice good sportsmanship and aren't looking to "prove" anything. There are several instructors and I've enjoyed classes with every one I've tried so far (Eddie, Val, Ritesh). Each instructor has a different teaching style and area of expertise, so you can learn something from everyone. Boxing classes are mostly bag work, with occasional partner work. Every so often there is also no contact/light contact sparring in the ring. It may seem intimidating at first, but everyone here prioritizes safety, and it's nice to put the skills you've practiced to the test. Overall you get a great mix of different aspects of boxing to work on--punches, combos, defense, footwork, etc, all while building up stamina. Classes usually wrap up with core work or other exercises off the bag. You will work hard! Take water breaks if you need. The coaches here also do private training for competitive fighting, for those interested. For people looking to learn a new sport from instructors that have spent time in the ring, look no further. This is a safe and welcoming place to learn.

But for me, this is the gym to go to in the Bay Area. Why? In coming to a boxing gym, I wasn't just looking for a workout. Yes, I want to get in shape. But you can do that in any number of ways. I also wanted to learn how to box. How to throw a cross, a jab, how to slip, how to measure distance. In other gyms I went to, it's basically a Barry's bootcamp with a heavy bag. You do an exercise routine that also has some punching. And it's great exercise! But at B Street, you not only get a hard, hard workout, but also a lot of coaching. In my first week (which was free), they started by showing me all the basic moves. Where to put my hands, how to move my feet. When I got some gear, they showed me how to wrap my hands. And during class, they not only take you through a high intensity workout routine, but also step in to make sure you're moving your body correctly, keeping your guard up. You'll get time in the ring with the coaches to do pad work and feel what it's actually like to have to move around an opponent and measure out your distance (this is *very* different from bag work!). You can even spar if you want, but I haven't got to this point yet and will probably hold off until I get into better shape. The coaches are all awesome, definitely know what they're talking about, and are incredibly nice. They meet you where you are and work from there. They're not afraid to push you to your limits, but never in a way that's mean or disrespectful. The community is also an awesome surprise. Everyone I've met there has been really nice and willing to take a second to help out a beginner with some basic tips. No egos or anything, just good people trying to help each other out. If you get in at the right time, you can also see B Street's Amateur team at work! No shortage of talent at this gym. Plus, they only charge $125/month. The bang for the buck is definitely there. Jake and the team were super welcoming, I was having fun in my first class and I've been going ever since. The energy in this place is great, plenty of begginers so you're never the only one, and plenty of folks with a lot of experience that you can learn from. Jiu Jitsu schools can have a very up tight environment as I've learned going to trial other gyms or visit open mats which is why I'm always so refreshed coming back to my gym. Our gym has a very welcoming, friendly and chill environment. Training partners are always happy to share knowledge and Hulk is always more than happy to share one on one time with you to ensure you are learning. I've seen many people enter the gym with zero experience and through trial and time grow to be competent practitioners. I couldn't recommend their jiu jitsu program more. I have also taken many Muay Thai classes here and coach Phil and Vick are great coaches with an inviting demeanor and teach easy to learn techniques which are beginner friendly but have a plethora of knowledge which has led many members to great success in amateur and regional matches. The sparring partners are also very nice people who can ramp it up if you'd like but are happy to practice techniques and push you to get a good workout in. Also, I have done many hours of weight lifting with their available free weights, squat racks, cable machines and kettlebells. They also have assault bikes and rowers. Basically all you need to reach whatever fitness and strength training goals. All in all, this gym has everything you need, great schools that teach martial arts, very well equipped, friendly staff that are always happy to help and most importantly an inviting and encouraging atmosphere. One day the studio was very cold -- Parkinson's makes it hard for me to regulate my body temperature -- so I closed the door. I was the only client working out at the time. Moments later, a man violently slammed the door back open in my face. No explanation, no apology. I later learned he was the owner. We adore our trainer, who went above and beyond to help, even arranging a meeting with the owner to address what happened. Instead of apologizing, the owner insisted I had violated the rules. All it would have taken was, "We keep the door open here -- please leave it, and let us know if you're cold." Instead, he doubled down. I trusted this studio with my health and my money.
