Getting promoted to purple belt in 2024 from Hulk.

I've been training here for my entire martial arts journey and have zero regrets about the 4 years and counting. I train primarily Brazilian jiu jitsu under coach Brian "Hulk" Fernandez who is a black belt under Ralph Gracie. Jiu Jitsu schools can have a very up tight environment as I've learned going to trial other gyms or visit open mats which is why I'm always so refreshed coming back to my gym. Our gym has a very welcoming, friendly and chill environment. Training partners are always happy to share knowledge and Hulk is always more than happy to share one on one time with you to ensure you are learning. I've seen many people enter the gym with zero experience and through trial and time grow to be competent practitioners. I couldn't recommend their jiu jitsu program more. I have also taken many Muay Thai classes here and coach Phil and Vick are great coaches with an inviting demeanor and teach easy to learn techniques which are beginner friendly but have a plethora of knowledge which has led many members to great success in amateur and regional matches. The sparring partners are also very nice people who can ramp it up if you'd like but are happy to practice techniques and push you to get a good workout in. Also, I have done many hours of weight lifting with their available free weights, squat racks, cable machines and kettlebells. They also have assault bikes and rowers. Basically all you need to reach whatever fitness and strength training goals. All in all, this gym has everything you need, great schools that teach martial arts, very well equipped, friendly staff that are always happy to help and most importantly an inviting and encouraging atmosphere. I couldn't recommend it any more! Thank you to the two Jake's that work the front and to all the staff for the support in my martial arts journey.

Yikes...I'm not as good at Jiu-jiujitsu as I thought. Just kidding. I'm pretty good. You know what else is good or even great? Bay Area Boxing's BJJ program. Why is it great? Well let me tell you. I've been training here for 8 years and currently now a Brown Belt. Professor Hulk (Ralph Gracie Black Belt) is a great coach and always willing to talk or answer questions. He's welcoming and laid back which makes everyone comfortable. Our training partners are really well trained and some have become close friends to me. I used to work in the area and I currently live in San Jose. I still make the drive out here to train because the atmosphere is rare to find. I will continue to train here as long as possible. If you're skeptical of one star reviews with no profile pictures, posted a year after their experience, you should be. Come by and try out BJJ or train with us at an open mat. If you have any questions ask any upper belt. We're happy to help.

For context, I am a white belt with about three years of training, and my father is a purple belt with over ten years of experience. First, I want to highlight the positives. The owner, Nina, is incredibly welcoming, and Professor Brenda is the best coach I've ever trained under. She is knowledgeable, patient, and creates a great learning environment. If this review were based solely on them, it would be a 5/5. However, our experience with coach Sal was extremely concerning. This was our first class at this gym. After an excellent lesson from Brenda, we moved on to sparring. I was paired with Sal, and within the first minute he submitted me multiple times with a level of intensity I've never experienced from a black belt working with a low-ranked student such as myself. In the past when I have sparred, higher belts typically roll in a controlled, instructional manner, especially with someone new to the gym or at a lower level. During our roll, he applied a leg lock so quickly and aggressively that I barely had time to tap before feeling sharp pain in my knee. Later, he attacked my arm in a way that caused an audible pop in my elbow. He reacted with surprise but did not check on me or apologize. The next day, I was limping from the leg lock and had to wear a sling due to the pain in my elbow. My father had a similar experience. Both of his shoulders were injured during his roll with Sal, resulting in tears that caused sleepless nights and required him to wear a sling as well. We both had to miss work and have been in physical therapy ever since. Our combined medical costs have exceeded $2,000. We informed the gym, but we never received a response. In all our years of training, neither of us has ever encountered anything like this. Injuries can happen in jiu jitsu, but the level of force used by Sal, especially with new students, was far beyond what is normal or safe. It has taken us six months to feel comfortable training again. If you choose to visit this gym, the environment created by Nina and Brenda is wonderful, but I strongly recommend avoiding sparring with Sal Lara due to the risk of serious injury.
