Contacted Jakes to move me from out of town to the Onalaska area. the estimate over the phone was $2,550 as he had moved me before, same furnishing, same distance. The finale bill was $4,424.21.. As I was in sticker shock I didn't notice he didn't leave an invoice. I have asked him a plethora of time for a detailed invoice he has never gotten back to me although my check was swiftly cashed . I would not use Jakes again and if you do I would strongly suggest you get an estimate in writing and signed. read more

Please proceed with caution when considering having Jakes Moving and Storage move your things. Jake gave me a telephone estimate of $2,500.00, in early February 2024, but when the lead mover handed me the bill on February 23rd, 2024, it was $3,399.93, a very significant difference of $899.93. I should have asked for a written estimate from Jake with his signature, but instead trusted what he told me on the phone. The move was from La Crosse, WI. to Onalaska,WI. I thought the $2,500.00 was extremely high, with the final bill of $3,399.93 exorbitantly high. My recommendation is that you get a written cost estimate from Jake with his signature if you go with him. Some people might think it best to get the written cost estimate with signature notarized. The final bill that I received was dim to sight, pretty much impossible to read without a magnifying glass, but on close inspection I was able to see most, but only most, of what I was charged for, with several surcharges tacked on, surcharges that just run up the bill, that other moving companies do not tack on. I have moved several times in what is now my long lifetime, and I have never had such a dismal moving experience. Trust me when I tell you it was a really bad moving experience with the service from Jakes. Other people have complained about Jakes charges here on YELP and on other review websites, so I am certainly not the only one to call attention to his charges. There are numerous good faith moving companies in the Coulee Region and elsewhere who will give you a fair shake for your dollars. By all means check them out, and no matter who you decide to go with, do get everything you feel that you need in writing. I wish I could give Jakes Moving and Storage a good rating, but I cannot. Jakes Moving and Storage failed. He contracted with us in early August to move us out of our three-bedroom home into an apartment with extra furniture stored in his storage container. The following activities occurred that resulted in his failed move; 1. He estimated the move would take a day to pack (only took a 1/2 day), a day to load and day unload. This estimate occurred after he personally walked through ever room and viewed all furnishings. His estimate was $200 an hour to move and unload and $240 an hour to pack. His bill was at least twice the estimate even with additional fuel surcharges, insurance and an assortment of additional charges tacked on. In discussing my moving outcome with others who have used his services, underbidding seems to be a prevalent strategy. 2. The furniture we moved experienced much damage. It was promised on the onset that fragile or sensitive furniture would be wrapped or covered for protection. The move started with this promise but by mid-day expensive, fragile items were thrown into the truck unprotected. For example, every living room lamp we owned was broken, lamps that we ordered specially to fit into our home's décor. We have pictures to document the depth and extent of furniture damage experienced in the move. The promise to cover walls and floors was at the very best minimally performed. 3. We contracted to rent storage from Jakes Moving and Storage. Jake suggested we put our storage items into one of his containers. My initial reaction was positive as I assumed it was smart to store furniture in a container as it would make the eventual later move less costly and more efficient. When we visited the container, we were shocked. The container was an old rust bucket sunk in mud filled with mites. When we opened the door, it brought tears. Our household furnishings worth $1000's of dollars was in shamble, as can by proved by the many pictures we took. Our furnishings were insured for thousands of dollars yet shoved into a dirty old container stuck in the mud at twice the rental fee of comparable storage. We expressed our disappointment to Jake. We asked him to move our furnishings to another storage warehouse, he refused. Subsequently we hired another mover along with three personal U-Haul visits by my wife and myself to complete the move. 4. What I have shared is my experience with Jakes Moving and Storage. Outstanding. These guys saved us from a disastrous move. First of all they arrive early so be ready. Our group of movers had so much energy plus had fun doing the job. They knew the timeframe they needed to get everything done and informed us of things along the way. They work their tales off every minute all day long! Jakes quote was spot on, which I changed because I thought I knew better. We did need extra people, we needed the extra truck plus extra hours. I can't saw enough about those totes. Clean and ready to go. We started with small amount (again because I knew better?!) We ended up with over 200. I have used Jakes to move my Mothers things as well. I wouldn't use anyone else. I booked first viewed reviews later. By that time I was committed due to a short time line for moving. Having expected the worse I was pleasantly surprised about my experience. The movers strategized among themselves and worked as a team. They worked quickly and efficiently and were very respectful. The cost was below the estimate which rarely happens. The only criticism I have is that when I called a week before to confirm it took four days and a second call to respond. Also, only 2 forms of payment- check or cash. Would not take much to update and use technology to allow cards. read more

I was not happy to pay for time and fuel from their shop. 32 minute drive to move 1.9 miles, only 6 pieces of furniture was $734. Fees for a 'long walk' and 'large piece' were not specifically mentioned at the time of the estimate. Isn't that what this time was for? Coupon sent but no discount given. I feel very ripped off! Positives were the owners and movers were polite. The job got done. The owners also kindly held my check before cashing it because I was not expecting to pay what they ended up charging. I even had it set to move waaay more stuff! Moving is a difficult time for anyone. In my case my mom passed away. I feel bad there wasn't a better understanding with this moving company. I highly recommend you avoid Jake's Moving and Storage. I am extremely displeased by their lack of professionalism, their dishonesty, and their poor customer service. We enlisted their moving service based on a referral to move our large items that we were not able to move ourselves. We received a verbal quote from Jake after a walk-through and were told it would take 3-4 hours and to expect the cost to around $400 to $500. It took three guys 4 and a half hours to move our items. These items were already broken down by us and ready to be wrapped and moved. We stressed the importance of protecting our items, especially those of high value, yet everything was moved carelessly with virtually no wrapping or moving blanket protection. Moving blankets were only applied once the items were already in the truck. Upon completion, we received an invoice just shy of $1000. This was 3 times what was quoted. We called and left a voice mail asking for someone to contact us about the bill. We also sent an email to which we received no reply. It has now been several weeks, and they have made no attempt to resolve this matter. After posting our review on Facebook, they replied, and we did end up speaking with Jake. He apologized for things not being wrapped but otherwise stood by their pricing saying it was fair. He does not see a problem with charging 3 times what he quoted, and he offered no resolution. This whole experience with his company is the epitome of "over promised and under delivered." Look elsewhere for moving services. Trust me. read more

This was the worst customer experience I've ever had. I have never written a bad review in my life, but no person should have to go through what I did. Late to arrive, literally thought they were ghosting me, trucks not big enough, late to empty the house after closing (2.5 hours). Movers were wonderful, poor guys, albeit not masked, per current mandate. After a glowing meeting with the owner, expected a "this is how we will fix this" call, nothing, when I reach out about my complaints, argument. Rude secretary. Bill came back at 2200 when quoted 1200. No discounts for the aforementioned. No solution. I can understand mistakes happen, I can understand estimated being a little off, but nearly double?? but remedy them, don't say "Im sticking to my guns", that's not how you run a business. Get email, put things in writing so you don't screw up, prepare your staff (and if you screw up admit and fix it), build trust, allow your community to support you, if only you would provide the services you offer. read more

I wish I could give Jake a good review. He seems like a nice guy. But he made our move miserable. We've moved four times with professional movers - twice with big national companies and twice with locals, so we know what to expect. Jake did not deliver. Everything was great except one BIG error: Jake WAY UNDERESTIMATED the job. I took him on a tour of every room in our house, including the basement, garage, and outdoor areas so he could see everything we had in our home and in storage areas. He estimated three guys and one truck could do the move in 8 to 10 hours. Jake doesn't give an estimate for the whole job; he charges by the hour. Based on his estimate, we figured it would cost $1700 to $2000 (there are a few reasonable fees in addition to the hourly charge). Awesome. We hired him. The moving guys arrived right on time on moving day. They were courteous, friendly, and very professional, esp the lead guy. Unfortunately, it ended up taking them SEVENTEEN hours to do the move. SEVENTEEN HOURS. That is nearly TWICE as long as Jake estimated. And made for an incredibly miserable move for ALL involved. Miserable for us because we had to work for as many hours as the movers and have a young daughter who really needed to go to bed and couldn't. Miserable for the poor moving guys because they had to work an insanely long day doing hard physical labor. And since they thought they'd be done a lot sooner, they hadn't even packed dinner and didn't have a car to go get food. At 8pm, after having already worked 12 hours, my husband when to the nearest Culvers and got each of them a full meal. Then they still had 3 more hours to work! The other bad thing is that by the end, we were all so desperate for them to be done, that my husband and I told the guys to just put stuff in the garage rather than take time to put in the house in the correct room... so after this miserable moving day, we still had a bunch of furniture and boxes that WE had to move to the correct room in the house. Not cool. Not cool at all. Jake's mistake pretty much ruined the entire move. We ended up paying $2700, which was about a THOUSAND DOLLARS more than Jake estimated it would cost. But honestly the higher cost is not what bothers us most -- we would have gladly paid for a 4th guy and a higher hourly rate to get the job done faster. With a 4th guy, the cost probably would have been the same, but at least the job would have gotten done within a reasonable amount of time! I called Jake a few weeks later (after we had time to settle in and get through the Christmas holidays) and left a voicemail saying that the move did not go well and that I'd like to talk to him. He never called me back. Very unprofessional. So I do NOT RECOMMEND Jake's Moving. If he gets the estimate right, then they may be a great company. But if he gets it wrong... you will be in for a miserable experience. And he won't do anything to fix it or compensate you for his mistake. In my opinion, he should offer us a discount for the misery his mistaken estimate cost. But he wouldn't even return my call. Unless you are desperate, DO NOT HIRE THIS COMPANY. read more

Had these guys move my belongings about 30 minutes away. He came in and told us it was a pretty small job considering what they are used to. He said $109/hr but, then when he came back to look at it "closer" he determined $142/hr. Still he assured us it was a small job and figured $700-$900 on the very high end and we could make it cheaper by packing everything. So we packed everything in boxes so that they just had to pick stuff up and move it. So the movers came and moved everything not having to do any packing at all. So I am expecting around $700 to complete this but, once it was done we get a bill for $1125!!!!!!! So we attempt to call him and ask what the heck happened? He answered to only start yelling at us about why he hates owning a business and that we need to pay him immediately or he's getting a lawyer. I would never in a million years recommend this company to anyone who is looking for movers. He is clearly inadequate at quoting moving jobs which is what they do.....and on top of it loses all professionalism and won't even speak to me over the phone because he says he doesn't want to look like the "bad guy".
