Not sure if this is James alterations, I was expecting a grouchy old guy based on the other reviews, but apparently James is an older Asian lady? I don't care who it is as long as they do a great job at a fair price. She did an ok job but she's only there between 7-10 am most days, which isn't viable for me. She also only takes cash and charged me $50 to hem 2 pairs of pants and take in 1 of them. I thought it was a bit higher than normal but was really needing the work done ASAP. I'm still searching for a good tailor in the area, I won't be coming back here. read more

Everyone will have a different experience. Fortunately, my experience was great. I need eight pairs of pants altered. I called before coming back and asked when they will be ready. She said tomorrow! Drove to the shop and dropped them up. She confirmed what I wanted to be done, gave me a price and it was ready the next day. read more

James took a botched pair of pants, half of a uniform for a 501st Star Wars Constuming group, and made them himself. He had a picture of what they were supposed to look like and just ran with it. He is brilliant. He knows what he can handle, he knows what he can't and I appreciate that. He didn't agree to something he couldn't get done in a weekend. He was no nonsense and gave us a pretty fair price for alterations on the jacket and a complete makeover for the pants. He works there with perhaps two other employees. I have only seen him and another "lad." He's quite the charmer and it always asking what he'll make for me, next. My husband and I are blown away by his talent. I was sent there by an embroidery shop close by. Boy am I sorry I went there. I had two hats that needed patches sewn on. I told the lady what I wanted. I came back the next day and the Patches were crooked and not centered also she had sewn through the inner hat band. So' I had her redo them again. This time she got it almost right. For whatever the reason she raised the patches higher. They look good if you are standing a foot taller then me. Also I was charge twelve dollars per hat. Yes I agree with Jon. I dropped off my items to be tailored with James about 10 days ago. While in the shop, he was degrading in the way he talked to me. When he did work for me 2-3 years ago, this was not my experience at all. He was so kind then. Everyone has bad days, so I brushed it off. He called me last Friday and left a voicemail saying my items were ready to be picked up. I thought this was unusual because it had not been 10 days yet. When I got there he told me he didn't call me. He had no recollection of this. So I left the store. Two days ago he called me and left a voicemail saying he needed to talk to me. I tried calling back 3 times that afternoon. I got no answer, so I left a voicemail on the third try. Since I hadn't got a call back yet, I decided to go down to the shop today to see what he needed to talk to me about. When I walked in, there was a gentleman that I had not seen before. He didn't greet me. He just stared off into space. I was able to convey to him that I had items there. So he asked me to come in the back and show him what items were mine. I located them and told the guy that James had called me saying he needed to talk to me. I asked him several times if I could speak with James. James came out and said in an angry voice that my stuff wasn't finished and not to waste money tailoring a certain dress. He told me he called me 3 times (not true, he only called me once that day). I didn't understand why he was upset. So I responded, "You called me two days ago and left a voicemail saying you needed to talk to me." He didn't acknowledge that he left a voicemail. I tried frantically to go through my phone to show him the voicemail. Then he just stormed off to another room in the store. I said out loud, "I think I want to take my clothes to another store." He came back and told me how happy he was to hear this and then he gave me my clothes. 2-3 years ago, he had great customer service. He told me about coming from Eastern Europe. We discussed the barriers to advertising on the street in front of the shopping mall where he is located. He was so kind. I told him I wanted to try to help him. So I started interviewing shops next to him so they all could come together and advocate for a sign in front of the shopping mall on the street. This evening I realized considering my experience with him 2-3 years ago, I am thinking he has some signs of dementia that are affecting his memory and personality. If this is true, I hope someone who cares about him has intervened to help him. read more

Wow I just went in there to get two easy fixes, one on the pocket of my pants that just needed a quick sew as the pocket was coming undone and 2nd my I needed a new clasp on my bathing suit. The guy at the counter said they could do it and then brought the pieces to the back and the guy back there said bring it to some Joanne's in a really grumpy voice. The guy at the counter brings me my items back and I asked him does that mean no? He hands them to me and he said no. Needless to say it was a no go. read more

This shop is rather old school, but a great place for "men" to find suits and other related business ware. While James does provide basic tailoring, I think the real value of this establishment is to get high quality suits at a reasonable price. Keep in mind, it's not Jos A. Bank. As a small shop, James can't compete with the low prices and full inventory that major establishments provide. Instead, look to James for much better quality merchandise and truly expert advice on business suits and jackets. read more

I have used them several times. He works alongside his other shop in the old firehouse on power and University. I read that the customer service is bad, however I have gotten nothing but great service from him James. He is a old school tailor so he does have a tendency of going of subject but that alone shouldn't deter you from using someone with his experience in tailoring. This guy and his staff has altered several of my shirts. They are usually super fast about it also, and reasonably priced. I would def recommend him to anyone. read more

James Tailoring has had a reputation for excellence for a long time. HOWEVER, I had a job done this past week that was sizable. It is apparent that the seamstress got tired of doing the job and took shortcuts that impacted adversely the quality of the work. Some of the work was not done straight. I won't be going back again. I now have to find someone to fix the problems. read more

First of all, all these Yelp complaints seem to be from telephone reviews. If you have never been into the actual store you have no idea what's going on with this store or the owner. The owner is very old. He is a master at his craft. He is old fashioned and he just might he an "old dart" As someone said. But he does fantastic work and like I mentioned, he is a master at his craft. He is OLD SCHOOL and probably just doesn't have the patience to deal with you over the phone. Maybe he can't even hear you. He doesn't even take credit cards, he still accepts CHECKS for crying out loud. I wish we could Go back to the era of men wearing suits and looking dapper. James is probably sick to his stomach that the world has gone to hell in a hand basket and people have given up dapper suits for grunge wear and flip flops. Give the old geezer a break. This place is great. James provides GREAT Customer Service and Alterations. The few customers can stopped by he knew exactly what item they were picking up. James is very personable. You can't find these type of Customer Service nowadays. My Husband dropped his Tuxedo and it looked great after a week and it was completed. The pricing is very reasonable. This place is wonderful. James is as good as it gets if you're looking for a tailor or even advice on what to wear with what. Of course he can't give estimates over the phone lol. It would be extremely foolish to do that if he wants to give you any accuracy. The cheap places will always do this because you get what you pay for and what do they care as long as it gets you in the door? James saw two suits of my husbands. One was too large and he couldn't work on it without redoing the entire suit. We really appreciated that he didn't bother with a sales pitch but rather explained that suit wouldn't go well for my husband. He did a perfect job tailoring my husband's remaining suit. And he even did it rushed as we had an impromtu wedding to get to. We will go back for all of our tailoring needs as long as James is in business. As far as customer service goes...He is great. I understand a lot of people are used to shop owners begging them for their business, but James is the best at what he does and he'll be honest and direct with you. James is Old School for sure, he is always impeccably dressed and I always feel like in the hands of a master. His shop feels like you are walking into a store from the past. The team at James Alterations has always been amazing. They do amazing work repairing my suits as I am a little rough with them. I live up north and come down once a week to Mesa. Their new hours closing at 1 pm means I can no longer use their services. I wish them the best and hope I can find a tailor with the same quality. read more

Called and asked about Saturday hours and he said come in any time between whatever and 2:30. So I drove 10 minutes down there and walked in at 1:30. The old fart walks out with his euro accent and takes one look at me holding 5 pants that need to be altered and says he can't help me today. He turns around and walks back to the back of the store and continues his business. I'm standing there and it's so wrong what he did that it was actually comical. So I proceed to talk to him in a loud voice because he doesn't even give me 1 min to ask a few follow up questions and I'm yelling to him in the back of his store. He tells me try back next weekend. I ask him what he charges, he tells me he would have to see it. I'm standing there with everything. The bottom line is, is he really doesn't care. The whole thing was just really funny to me. I thought he would be happy to see a bunch of suite pants to alter but he actually ran away as fast as he could. I felt a little bad because it looks like it is just him and he was under some pressure to finish something up but at the end of the day he could care less if I came back. Typical Euro vs American. DO NOT GO HERE! They are rude and do crappy, overpriced work. They promised me a bridesmaids dress altered and ready to go on a certain date and didn't get it to me until the DAY before the wedding. Their communications is nonexistent and they do average work for their high prices. Do yourself, and your wallet, a favor and drive a couple extra miles and find someplace else. read more
