Kenwood Barbers is an Uptown institution that has served the neighborhood for over 40 years. I believe it's the second oldest business only to the infamous Liquor Lyle's across the street. Several days ago, I woke up with crazy-person hair with strands angrily resisting comb sweeps, pomade, and hairspray. Usually, bad hair days like this wouldn't be a problem, but I needed a quick cut prior to working an event that night and wearing a hat would be an absolute no-no. I Yelped barber and found Kenwood nearby. With a five star rating and nine reviews, I immediately made a phone call and got an appointment within the hour. I arrived two minutes prior to my appointment and was welcomed into a very small room with two barber chairs, a row of waiting seats, and manly décor -varying from military badges to bass fishing accessories- hanging from the walls. This barbershop screams, "I AM MAN." When it was my appointment time, a customer immediately got up and left. I was then told to take a seat. I appreciate the punctuality! During my twenty-minute cut, Steve, the owner, told hilarious adult jokes that would require little kids to "wear earmuffs." I also had a nice chat with my barber. I forget his name, but he is cool and left selling cars to cut and has been doing it for four years. He also did an excellent job on my head of hair. Twenty minutes later, I got let go and paid only $16. I just gave the extra $4, because he did great work. This place is all businesses, and if you're in a rush and want to save some cash while receiving a great cut, try checking this place out. read more

I have been a customer for over 15 years and couldn't be more please with Steve's service, humor and attention to detail. I too was tired of paying too much for my haircuts and was referred to Kenwood by my boss who lived nearby. I'm surprised I am the first to post about this place as it is always busy and I suggest setting up an appointment. Now, when I say busy, I don't mean supercuts busy where there is a line and everyone run through 10 minutes at a time. Both barbers are excellent and really take their time to do a good job. I was getting a little tired of other barbers raising their prices so they could slap another flat screen on the wall...so when I heard about Steve from a family friend I made an appointment. I got a terrific haircut and Steve was hilarious and great to chat with. He's now the only person I want to cut my hair when I'm home in MN. Steve and Paul are wonderful barbers and guys. Their prices are very reasonable. They've been in this area for over 40 years and can recall when Sebastian Joe's was the new kid on the block (not the crappy boy band... you know what I mean). After a dozen years of free, uniform-length, electric clipper cuts for my balding head, I decided that it was time for my midlife crisis. For a couple of years beforehand, I had begun dressing more fashionably than ever before, working out 5-6 days per week, and attempting physical feats that a 40-something only does when he wants to feel young again (don't let your mind run too far with this!). Now, I wanted a real haircut. Where else to go but Yelp for the perfect barber shop? After reading 20 gushing reviews about this charming, old-fashioned, and manly barber shop, I knew I'd found the right place for me. In particular, I wanted my cut from the legend himself--Steve, the owner. So, I called them up on a Wednesday and booked an appointment with Steve for Friday around the lunch hour. When I arrived, I found plenty of street parking out front in a safe neighborhood. I parked across the street and ran across to the shop. When I walked in, Paul was cutting a guy's hair and asked if I was a walk-in. I told him that I had an appointment with Steve, who was on the phone booking another appointment. Steve was off the phone promptly and greeted me with a smile, a handshake, and a question of who referred me. I said, "Yelp! You guys have great reviews!" Steve quickly quipped, "Yeah, our reviews got great once we learned to write!" Steve, Paul, and I chuckled together, and I knew this was my kinda place. I'd been there 3 minutes, and I already felt like the 3 of us were old friends. I learned in the course of conversation that Steve has been cutting hair in this exact shop for over 35 years. He obviously loves what he does, and he is a real pro, both at cutting hair and at improvisational humor. He listened intently as I told him what I was thinking. He asked several questions and reassured me with his responses, which made me feel like he was reading my mind. He knew what I wanted, but he heard me out, just to make sure. It was a pure clipper cut--a fade, with very short hair on the sides that started super short on the bottom and gradually got longer moving up the side of my head, with the longest hair on top. Steve explained what he was going to do, got my agreement, and wasted no time getting to work. Over the next 20 minutes, give or take, we talked about lots of guy topics, much of it not repeatable here (my wife could read it, and that would violate the masculine code of ethics). The 3 of us had many laughs, and I learned that these two guys are running a hopping business that they love. Make an appointment, and make it a few days in advance, unless you don't mind waiting a while to squeeze in with one of them unannounced. In addition to the good humor, Steve does like to talk about what can be done with your hair, now and in the future, if you choose to grow out this and trim that. I appreciated this, and for the first time in a dozen years, I have a hairstyle that I genuinely like, as well as ideas for after my longer hair on top gets even longer. I read in another review that they only take cash. I cannot verify that, but I brought cash to be on the safe side. I tipped the $4 to make it a round $20, and Steve expressed his gratitude. I'll be back every 3-4 weeks for as long as I live, or until the rest of my hair falls out, whichever comes first. There are only so many businesses like this still in existence, and I feel like I stepped back in time for a brief spell--back to a time when hospitality and exceeding expectations were more common. read more

I give this place 2.5 stars. The first negative review on here. I got the cut done by Steve, who seems like a nice guy. The cut I asked for was very simple and standard, short on the sides and longer on top (to be put to the side or gelled up) After about 15 min, he flipped the chair around to indicate he was done and I told him I was unhappy with the cut. It was completely not blended in in the back and on one side, like only the bottom half of my hair was trimmed in the back. He then told me "your haircut is only supposed to be 15 minutes, I can't do much for you." He was annoyed and went to the back and sides again for a few seconds and then wearily asked "what about now..." I physically pointed out the glaring mistake but he claimed he couldn't see it. I wasn't aware this was Fantastic Sam's or Great Clips, I thought I was at a barbershop. Barbers are supposed to care about their clients and the quality of the cut, not the time. 15 minutes? Really? Not to mention no shampoo after the cut, attempt to get hairs off neck/face, or razor to the neck/back of the head. Charge a little more and do these things, you're supposed to be barbers. read more

I scheduled an appt and received a good/basic haircut from a nice guy. there's minimal worthy of a report and it wasn't extremely awesome but it was not poor at all. Two star reviews for a barbershop haircut is silly - what a bunch of fricken queens. I also don't understand the 5 star - the prices are good, the product is good and the barbers are nice but it's just good and this is not 5 star. Constructive criticism: they don't take cards and parking in this area isn't always easy. I'd also love to see a master barber that does shaves. read more

Just went in for a haircut here yesterday after going to a different place for a couple years. The other place I was going to started being inconsistent with how they cut my hair and I decided to switch it up. I chose Kenwood Barbers due to the Yelp reviews and I wasn't disappointed. I had my hair cut by Paul and he did a fantastic job. He evened out any inconsistencies in my hair from before and listened to exactly what I wanted. The whole time there was a good and fun banter with Paul and also Steve who was cutting someone else's hair. Overall it was a great experience and I'd highly recommend this place. read more

This barbershop is great. It's a tiny, old fashion type place. I've been getting my hair cut by Paul for a while now and have never left without being completely satisfied. The haircuts are very affordable and you don't sacrifice quality for price. I used to pay almost $50 for a haircut at other places and the haircuts I receive at Kenwood certainly match the quality of the more expensive places. Just make sure to make an appointment in advance as they seem to stay quite busy. read more

My partner and I have been going to see Steve at Kenwood Barbers since we lived in the house that is now Burch`s parking lot. First let me tell you he gives a great cut. 15 minutes no hassle no sales pitch. You tell him what you want, he cuts it. Don't know really what you want(I am the worst about that) he gives you ideas. Went in yesterday with a general idea and he gave me exactly what I was looking for. We have driven from the East side of Saint Paul when we lived on that side of the river and we drive from over north now that we live back in Mpls. Prices are great and seldom change though I know the rent has gone up over the years. Actually instead of raising prices he just adds extra hours i.e. extra work. A true gentleman. Now let me tell you a little more. !5 years ago my partner and I moved to FL. While we were living there he had a major stroke(my partner) and was completely disabled. No insurance no income. I managed to get us back to Minneapolis so he could receive therapy at HCMC. After returning to Mpls and myself returning to work we went to see Steve for haircuts. He was as kind and generous as ever. In fact for about a full year he didn't even charge us for the haircuts because he knew we were struggling so much. That kindness will never be forgotten. Another story. Last year my sister passed away and we drove to FL for her funeral. Knowing that we live only on my income and my partners social security disability when we returned and went in he said "no charge, you guys have been through enough". I cant imagine another small business owner with a bigger heart. And yes the haircuts are great as well as the jokes and the chat. I highly recommend his services but also him as a person.
