Luckily, there are places like this one, where doctors still care. Dr Schapper, Amanda, and all of the staff were so very kind and helpful throughout the process. The cleaning and the x-rays were even one of the most gentle and comfortable procedures I've had done (you know how those x rays things that go in your mouth can pinch and be super uncomfortable - not so here!) I actually ended up coming here after searching for an office that would work with my new job's insurance. Everyone I had called over the past months merely said, "we do not work with your insurance." When I called into this office, the woman said, "would you like me to call them and see for you? I know it can be tricky." She called, called right back, was able to tell me exactly what would be covered, and I made my appointment. Everything else continued along with this same kindness and help.

To my credit, I practice great hygiene, to my detriment, the genetic composition of my teeth leaves much to be desired. From this vast pool of experience in dental treatment, I have never felt obligated to leave a review. However, my recent appointment with Dr. Smart has motivated me, for the first time, to share my experience. Getting a filling (and in my case, 3 fillings) always seems to require cold back sweat, sticky leather chairs and the smell of the filling-resin drying under a harsh purple curing light. I cannot leave out the Novocain shot of course. Nothing prompts the breakout of a cold sweat like the anticipation of a novocain shot. This experience as a whole conspires to leave dentists feeling helpless in reversing the hint of dread afflicting most every patient facing an upcoming filling appointment. Alleviating the pain and anxiety of having your teeth drilled into will ultimately require new drugs and techniques that technology may well eventually solve. However, I do not see a relaxed filling coming anytime soon. In the meantime, I recommend Dr. Smart! He did not physically hold my hand during the procedure, but he is a great communicator and spent much of the time explaining to me the particulars of the procedure. Why was this immensely helpful? Well, rather than kidding myself that the images of Hawaii's Big Island could distract me from drilling, I found that actively thinking about the procedure was extremely helpful. By listening to Dr. Smart's description of the events unfolding I viewed the experience from the role of the dentist rather than that of the patient. In so doing, I found little reason to complain about receiving three fillings. At the end of the appointment, I was still numb obviously, but I was happy because the price tag was affordable, the service careful and attentive and I found that Dr. Smart truly cares about your experience. I cannot say this about every dentist.

My mental faculties are fine, in fact I continue to mentor graduate students and still contribute to professional journals. I explained when I made the appt. I did not want to waste my time or insurance money with a Dentist that could not do the job I needed.(I had already been down that road a month before) Well when I got in the chair at the appt. Dr.Haslam tells me they need a comprehensive set of x-rays for my entire mouth and this bridge is going to cost tens of thousands of dollars and he will probably need to bring in a surgeon. so they take a couple of x rays and Dr.$$$$ Haslam tells me the same thing again. so I say lets do it! because I need a new bridge. on the way out they make me a 2hr.appt. for comprehensive xrays almost a month out. this bridge is almost falling out and includes 7 teeth. I dont think Dr.Haslam has the experience to take on such a complex job, and just wanted to scare me away. But thanks for wasting my time and insurance money.

The hygienist I liked is no longer there. The feeling I had was that the three dentists I met don't care about the patients. They all took my questions as an insult and got defensive and talked down to me. Like I've never had my teeth cleaned before! The place looks nice, and the receptionists are great but once you're in the chair, the whole experience is not great. I had one hygienist lightly bring up politics (assuming I would agree) while she was cleaning and wanted to scream. Its frustrating that they give out cookies and starbucks gift cards as though they are oblivious that sugar causes cavities. Seems like the Dentists are here for a racket.
