I am so fortunate that I found Dr. Winterton when I am staying one place because no one else has been so kind, attentive, careful, and patient. He listens and remembers what you asked for. What a wonderful experience at Dr Winterton's office this morning. I was seeing him during a surprise visit for us both actually! Saturday evening literally seconds before walking into a meeting at an event, I reached for a small handful of popcorn, chewed and thought I had bitten into a kernel, nope!! It was my back lower right crown now in my palm. My general dentist is also in the building and happened to be on Christmas vacation with his family. So he tags Dr James in to deal with any emergency cases on while he is away. They were able make an appt for me Tuesday am to get it reseated. She tells me wait for confirmation via text and asks for my cell number. Tuesday am comes around and Dr Winterton and team have me in and out within 30 mins. Crown seated, and a small adjustment and polishing after checking my bite. I'm thankful he was here during the Holidays to fill-in for me. His office and techs were really friendly, the lobby is super clean and modern too, see pics. And they were able to bill my insurance company for the quick fix. read more

Dr Winterton cancelled his in-network relationship with Metlife Dental insurance. His letter said that there "could an increase in cost treatments" as an out-of-network provider. However, when I confronted him face-to-face, he said that the "costs would be about the same." We received a $295 bill for a teeth cleaning and xrays that would have been totally covered by Metlife. read more

Im a long time client, 20 + years, with Dr. helliwell before Dr. winterton took over. I had appnt on 10/7. I texted their chat system saying I would be 20 minutes late. I never heard back, when I arrived (30 minutes late) they said they never got my text because the server crashed and they would be unable to see me and will need to reschedule. No problem. Here's where things went south. On 10/11 I got a text saying I need to schedule appnt. When I texted 10/12 Kim texted me saying " we will not be rescheduling you for future appnts" and "we feel you would be happier somewhere else" I couldnt believe it, very rude, unapologetic and condescending. I have been with that office for so long, and to be treated like that... I felt completely abandoned. Shame on Kim. It takes months to see them, they need more help. read more

I liked this dentist at first because the actual dentist was present at my appointments. He missed one of my appointments and I knew he wouldn't be there so I just saw the tech to get cleaned. Then another appointment 6 months later was coming up that they said he would be present for when I booked 6 months in advance and he wasn't. They didn't call me to inform me he wouldn't be there after all either to give me a chance at rebooking to be seen by him. They have someone new at front desk the previous person always called. I left and didn't even go through with the cleaning. Complete waste of my time. That would be 1 full year my actual dentist didn't poke or look at my teeth himself and he was fully okay with that. No rescheduling for his absence or even a call to let me know. And to top it off they tell me it was a vacation before his kids went back to school. That's great and everything but when you have patients you have not personally seen in a years time you should want to see whats going on as a caring dentist. That's why there is a dentist and there are techs. Each time I've gone to the dentist anywhere else in the past the actual doctor looked into my mouth and poked around after the tech was done. It's rare to go a year with 2 appointments in that year and not actually see the dentist. -NH read more

Dr. Winterton is great, but unfortunately his front desk will lead you to believe that they've done their part. Triple check your insurance, because she will assume that you are in network, then later tell you that you are not and say oh well it's your responsibility. Yes, I understand responsibility and paid my part. I also don't appreciate being laughed at, very unprofessional and rude. Hope this is a teachable moment to not assume and not to laugh at someone who is trying to pay you. read more

I went to Dr Winterton as a referral from a friend. I thought that he was very profession and put the care into my hands. Given my dental history I have tended to be more conservative with my teeth. After his initial exam, we discussed my options. There are still 1-2 teeth that could be filled but we are still watching as they are symptomatic. In July of this year, I had excrutiating pain in my mouth and jaw. He promptly diagnosed and referred me to an excellent endodontist for a root canal. Dr Winterton did an superb job fitting me for the post root canal crown. I also appreciated his integrity and honesty. I ended up paying him $80 extra for the crown, which he reimbursed me with a check in the mail. I have 2 kids, who were seeing a different dentist prior, that are regular clients of Dr Winterton. His staff are friendly and he is excellent with kids. He is a great physician and one that I will continue to see for my dental care. read more

After he scheduled me for an appointment at his Newport office, when I was finally seen I was told that my insurance was not accepted at that location. This is after I stood in the waiting room for 10 minutes while no one was there. I figured that I was on candid camera. Apparently not. After James made the mistake he didn't even tell me in person, apologize or try and work something out as a cash patient. His office is a mess and doesn't understand basic courtesy. read more

I went to Dr. Winterton for a crown on one of my molars that was experiencing both pain and sensitivity to hot and cold temperatures. Dr. Winterton was careful to explain all my options regarding treatment and was helpful in objectively answering my questions about what option might be right for me. I truly didn't feel "sold" (like I have at other dentists) or that he had an agenda as to what treatment was more lucrative for him. The procedure went excellent and the follow-up was thorough.
