First off, he took my case when it happened to be very complicated and touched by two other surgeons. Dr. McClurg is very professional and knowledgeable. He will give you all your options and together, come up with a plan. He is a very good surgeon and happens to be a busy doctor, wait times happen. He has fit me in, multiple times, with urgent needs. His whole staff is also phenomenal. I have never felt more at home in a doctors office. Carlos is so nice, always smiling and happy to do his job. Lizeth is very nice and always willing to help me. They are a pretty busy office so, leave a voicemail if they do not answer the phone. They will get back to you as soon as they can. Over all, phenomenal doctors office. The Best Dr I've ever seen in my long life and his staff was just as good

Dr. James saved my hand! I was cutting some palm tree fronds and a spike got into my hand as a frond was falling. I went to Sharp Grossmont ER from 11 till 5:30. The PA couldn't take it out, refereed me to ultrasound and results came stating the piece was 1 cm long and .5 cm deep. So he decided that I should be seen by a hand specialist. Surprisingly, they didn't have one in Sharp grossmont ER but they did in sharp memorial and I'm grateful that it was Dr. McClurg. He got called and came to the hospital to take care of the incident professionally. He diagnosed and explained the plan of action and he proceeded with it right way. The piece he took out of my palm was over an inch and a half long with the need of having a very small cut on my palm. I'm very grateful that my hand got fixed by Dr. McClurg cause he's a doctor who knew what he was doing with every step of the procedure and he's a master of what he did to my hand. Extremely thankful for this doctors time and professionalism. I fell off of my truck nine months ago and injured my hip. Chronic pain for 9 months and my original doctor couldn't do anything about it. Saw one orthopedic and only got to see the P A. she said it could take a year for the pain to go away. Didn't offer any treatment. Six months later, today I went in-and he took the time to look over my MRI, listened to me and ran some tests. He suggested a cortisone injection and I happily agreed. This is not necessarily a review of the Doctor or his personal service/talents/professionalism, those were great. However, his office left something to be desired with patient care on MULTIPLE occassions. To begin with, I was a referral from the VA to Triwest (through the Veteran's Choice Program) which is usually a nightmare, so please take this with a grain of salt. However, each review of the appointment(s) taking hours to be seen are absolutely true. I believe I had four(4)-five(5) appointments with Dr.McClurg preceding my surgery through post-op and I was forced to make it a half day at work for all of them (due to the appointments exceeding the additional hour I am allotted to take for a total of two hours) because each visit took over two hours to be seen. In fact, time with the Doctor was usually pretty quick. Most of the time is spent in the waiting room. This is not a deal breaker rather a pain in the ass if you have an appointment scheduled... Now the real reason I would never visit this Doctor's office again (as a patient of the VA/TriWest) is because I had to facilitate EVERY DOCUMENT between the VA and Dr. McClurg's office. Seriously, to request the surgery, I had to obtain the correct form and the correct fax number from the VA and pass that to the Doctor office and verify that the form was received in order actually get the surgery. I was forced to do this because once the request was sent by the Doctor's office (to TriWest), it was sent to the wrong fax no. and was documented on the wrong form. After going nearly two weeks (mid November to December) without an update I called both to discover that no progress had been made and there had been no follow-up. I know people get busy but were talking about getting surgery, that I needed and I had to wait weeks and discover on my own. Now onto the surgery (December 2017). Things go fine (I had an Orthoscope on my R ankle), sort of... Until it's time for physical therapy. Now (5 weeks removed from surgery) I call again to check the status, as I haven't heard from or seen anyone from the medical profession since ten days after surgery to remove stitches. That appointment ironically assured me that the request for PT had been made and I should start soon. Fast forward to last week (1/23/2018) and I am on the phone with the VA and the Doctor again... Only to discover that the same thing happened again. Both had forgot about me when the Doctor's office faxed the wrong request form to the wrong fax number again. On 1/23/18 I (again) obtained correct information and forwarded it to the Doctor. At that point I was told via email that the proper form would be sent and I would receive confirmation. Confirmation of which I never received until I called the VA and discovered that the incorrect form was faxed to the correct fax number on 1/23 (the day after I forwarded the correct form/number to use to Dr. McClurg's office). On 1/30/18 I spoke with a VA/Triwest rep that VERIFIED the correct fax information was FINALLY SENT on 1/30/2018. This entire time I have had no physical therapy because my authorization request was never approved. My request was never approved because it was sent incorrectly with no follow-up (other than myself after 30+ days post-op). Now I am scheduled to begin PT because I took care of it. The same can be said for scheduling the actual procedure. Because of this office I now have an exceedingly high knowledge of the VA/TriWest referral system and corresponding paperwork such as SAR's and phone numbers for various Authorization Departments to expedite these last minute requests being made, post ex-facto. I liked the Doctor but I cannot and will never again deal with the administrative portion of this office again. read more

Dr. McClurg is a true professional. He is caring, empathizes with his patients, and has amazing surgical skill. He is the first surgeon I've met who listened to my complaints and believed my nerve pain was real. I had a previous surgery to repair my cubital tunnel syndrome. After two years and many hours of PT my elbow did not feel right and the pain never went away. It was only becoming worse. I was unable to do basic tasks like cooking and driving. I spoke to 3 other surgeons before Dr. McClurg and none of them believed that anything was wrong with my elbow. They referred me to PT (which I did) and tried to give me cortisone injections (which are a bandaid, not a solution). Dr. McClurg took the time to do a full assessment and walk me through my options. He suggested a revision surgery which no other doctor recommended. I trusted in his option and surgical skill and proceeded. I am now 1 year post op and my full function has returned with no pain. He quite honestly saved my life. He took a 30 year old woman who was barely functioning and allowed me to return to normal. read more

I accidentally cut myself at work on 04/24/22 with a carpet blade. Went to the emergency room to get it taken care of but all they were able to do is to stitch it up and stop the bleeding. Doctor told me my tendon was severely damaged and he recommended me to McClurg office. I'm from Washington, the job was done and I leave on the 26. Doctor McClurg took the time to operate on my hand. Dr. McClurg is reputed to be the best orthopedist in San Diego. Maybe he is. But you have to muddle through a few issues in order to find out: 1. Exceedingly long wait time. (My daughter and I waited almost an hour and a half. It would have been nice to know Dr. McClurg was running so far behind.) 2. Exceedingly rude staff. (No greeting when we came in. Foul language in their conversations amongst themselves. Actual *eye rolls* when I asked how much longer we'd be waiting. No apologies. No smiles. We were very much made to feel like nuisances instead of valued patients.) 3. And Dr. McClurg... again, no apologies for running so far behind. Foul language *in front of my daughter*! Spent an excruciating amount of time fighting with his tablet. Not fully listening to us. Writing my daughter the wrong prescription. We finally got through the appointment and were handed out the print-out of the prescription. The rude assistant told us to have the woman at the front desk scan it before we go. Ummmm... if it's all computerized, then why do we have to wait for the rx to be scanned? Just another waste of our time. We've been to Dr. McClurg several times now and given him and his office repeated benefits of the doubt. No more. I'll find another orthopedist. read more

After close to a year of being a patient of Dr. McClurg and him promising during every appointment to submit a formal request to the Insurance company for approval to perform a menisectomy, I finally learned that he NEVER submitted the request! Even though during each appointment he "typed out the request" on his computer as we spoke, he wasn't typing out a request. He dragged on the appointments, getting paid by the Insurance company for each visit, but never submitted the request. When I finally learned that he'd never followed through with the request. I finally found another orthopedic surgeon and shortly after the 1st visit with the new surgeon the surgery was approved. I then requested my records from Dr. McClurg's office. His sugary sweet staff suddenly turned nasty and refused to hand over my medical records, even when I offered to pay for them. The absolute worst! My boyfriend was required to see Dr. McClurg after his car accident. He went multiple times and never once left before 3 hours, sometimes more, and only spending maybe 20 minutes actually in the presence of the Dr. The office staff will never get your paperwork right either so be prepared to pay them so you can do everything. Not really sure why they're in the business of "helping" people, they do very little of it. If you have a choice choose a different Dr or be prepared for 3+ hour appointments without fail and wrangling the right paperwork from the front desk "staff". read more

I was referred to Dr. McClurg in 2011 for an injury to my shoulder immediately he requested the necessary test and exams to be able to give me the best results possible. I had seen another doctor for almost a year with no relief of the pain I was suffering. He never requested any xrays or anything else. At Dr. McClurg his staff were heaven sent they fought for me with the insurance to be able to give me the necessary care. Recently I began to feel pain in both of my thumbs/hands and again insurance referred me to another doctor with no relief of the pain. Once I contacted Dr. McClurg's office I was able to get the necessary treatment and have even return to work. Wow that's about all I can say thank you so much I am eternally grateful. I absolutely love this doctor and his entire staff. I have been seeing him since 2015, as a result of work-related injuries. Dr. McClurg has conducted knee surgeries on both my knees, and since then, my knees are in great shape and I am able to walk up and down the stairs without pain. I am now waiting for my shoulder surgery, and I am confident that he will do an excellent job His office staff are incredibly nice, Quang has been especially exceptional with phone calls and advising me of any developments with my care. I have a choice in which doctor to go to, and I know there are many good doctors in San Diego area. But I can assure you, Dr. McClurg is top-notch. I trust him completely. I'm baffled to see a few low scores, but my experience is consistently great. Too bad he doesn't do general practice, because I would want him to be my personal family physician. read more

Dr. McClurg was good and very professional, but his Accounts Payable department is incompetent, unprofessional, and rude. They sent me a bill more than 18 months after services were rendered with no explanation for the delay. Then 3 weeks later they sent me a "past due" notice and threatened to damage my credit if I didn't pay immediately. They even accused me of not paying the bill at the time of the office visit even though I was not asked to pay anything at the time. I had a lengthy e-mail exchange with Cynthia in the AR department who refused to provide any explanation for why this bill was being issued so long after the office visit. Another case where support staff ruined an otherwise pleasant experience. I hope Dr. McClurg takes the necessary steps to address this problem before he loses more business. I have been a patient of Dr. McClurg's for many years. After an ankle injury he saved my life by diagnosing a blood clot in my leg. Recently he operated on my knee. It turned out to be a significant knee repair and he did an excellent job! I can do all activities now without any pain, Dr. McClurg is an excellent surgeon and an extremely caring doctor. He takes time with his patients to make sure they understand. During Covid I was very reluctant to have surgery, but Dr. MCClurg reassured me that I would be safe. Dr. McClurg is a sole proprietor and has a fairly large staff as well as in house Xray machines. My experience with this doctor and his staff, as few times as I was able to get appointments, was ok. The problem I experienced was that though he does take Department of Labor workers comp cases it became a problem of having everything delayed including some important diagnostic tool use, MRI. The letter I received from D.O.L. clearly stated that pain is only a symptom, it is NOT a diagnosis. D.O.L had actually closed my case without notifying me until I requested assistance through my congressman's office. My shoulder got ripped due to a trip and fall accident at work, and the tear showed up on the MRI which I was finally able to get almost 2 months after my injury occurred and then his reports to D.O.L. only indicated that the diagnosis was pain even when the report clearly indicated I had 2 substantial tears in my shoulder tendons. It took over three months to get physical therapy as his staff put the authorization request in in such a manner that it was approved for his office (though he has no physical therapists on his staff) instead of the PT office I had requested through his office . Clearly something is very wrong in this office. read more

There is barely more to say than Kate W. (8/31/12) already did! Her review took the words right out of my mouth! I have experienced EVERYTHING she describes (and more). Dr. McClurg's surgical skills are FANTASTIC, he is incredibly knowledgeable and really on the cutting edge of technology. He is thorough in discussions with you on what to expect, etc. However, unless you are prepared for EVERY appointment you make to be 3-4 hours long, you'll want to shop around. Unfortunately for him, his business is going to diminish unless he fires Silvia at the front desk and gets a handle on his time management skills. Silvia MUST be related to the Doctor, otherwise there is NO reasonable employer would still have her on staff. She gave us the nastiest look EVERY one of the 20 times we've walked in the door. (We have a 3 year history of 2 knee repairs with Dr. McClurg.) She never once has greeted us with as much as a "Hello", "Good Morning" , "Can I help you" ....NOTHING. She sits there while you stand in front of her and lets the awkward silence get the best of YOU until you say "I'm here for a 10:00 apt". She's disgusting to talk to on the telephone and is one of the laziest people I have encountered in quite some time. While sitting in the waiting room, I over heard her tell a client to go to their website and fill out the patient form before she arrives for her appointment, to which the client must have said "can you email it to me" and Silvia says "my email doesn't work and hasn't for a while, just go to our website". What business doesn't have a working email account for their admin? There is a sign on the front door that states they no longer share the suite with "Dr. X" and give his phone# and new address. Yet when I heard her receive a phone call requesting an appt with "Dr. X", Silvia said, "We no longer do business with him....(pause)....no, I don't have a new phone # for him." WHAT? IT'S PASTED ON YOUR FREAKIN' FRONT DOOR LADY! LAZY, that's it. After spending 4 hours at his first appointment, sitting in a room alone, my husband finally asked for his copay back and wanted to leave (I would have only waited 1/2 hour, but he's different - wink).....they sent in a nurse to write him a prescription for pain pills and sent him home, keeping the copay even though he didn't even see a doctor. Went back 2 weeks later, waited again in the waiting room for over TWO hours this time. Never an apology or even acknowledgement of their inconvenience. After PCL/ACL surgery, he has been going back for check ups every 2 weeks for 2 months. My husband thought he would get smart and book his appointment as either the first or 2nd appointment of the day, so as to avoid their habit of "running behind". Still didn't work! Right now, my husband had an appointment at 10:30 am today, just called me from the waiting room and hasn't been seen (11:49am). How is your office running behind after ONE patient in the morning? This is total insanity! I do want to give a VERY POSITIVE review of his nurse, CARLOS. He has fantastic bedside manor, he's knowledgeable and efficient. I hope he gets an offer from another orthopedic center someday for better hours and more money....he deserves it! Great job CARLOS! read more

From not being able to hike up mountains, or walk without pain and bothersome, now I can do all, my knees are functioning very well and I am very happy with the results. Dr McClurg successfully performed a very difficult ankle surgery on my son . My wife and I were petrified that he wouldn't regain full use of his ankle. My son is very athletic and without an ability to fully engage in sports he would not be a happy person. Dr. McClurg was very reassuring throughout the entire length of the process. We were all very nervous on the day of surgery. We waited for Dr. McClurg to come out and tell us how the surgery went. He came out spent at least 45 minutes with us explaining everything that he did. We are so grateful that we selected Dr. McClurg to help our son. He is unlike any other doctor that I ever knew . When my wife had a knee problem., She went in to see Dr. McClurg. Fortunately the knee was only a sprain, but while he examined her leg he noticed something suspicious about her calf. He insisted that we go get an ultrasound. The ultrasound unfortunately detected a blood clot. He immediately referred us to a specialist who treated my wife for the clot. This place was awful! I was told to come 1 hour early to my first appointment to fill out paperwork and get X-rays before my appointment. I ended up waiting 2.5 hours and was told it was going to be at least another hour before I was seen. Many other patients were in the same boat. I went to cancel my appointment and they had my name in their system wrong, after I just filled out all my paperwork and they had copies of my driver's license and Heath insurance card. The woman at the desk proceeds to argue with me and say that the name in the system is what my healthcare shows and it's not her fault. She printed out what the paperwork said and turned out it was a completely different person. She then tries to tell me that it is normal that it takes 2-4 hours to wait for an appt. I told her that she should tell people that when they make the appt because that is not normal. She argues that she tries to tell people but sometimes she just gets too busy. This is the worst dr experience I have ever had and I didn't even see the doctor. She said that sometimes the dr will spend hours on a person if needed. If that's true then they need to change their scheduling format. Don't ever go here unless you like sitting in a waiting room for 4 hours. read more
