The attending provider at Sharp Chula Vista gave me your office information after my recent hospitalization and advised me to follow up with Neurology. They stated a referral had been sent since I do not have an assigned neurologist. When I was transferred to the scheduling line, the man who answered was difficult to hear and did not offer a greeting. He asked for my date of birth and name, and after hearing my last name, his tone became rude and condescending. Once I provided my insurance information, he abruptly said you do not accept it and hung up. The interaction felt very unprofessional, and I wanted to bring this to your attention. Dr Purcell is amazing, the absolute best Neurologist I've met and been treated by in San Diego, a genius. At his clinic I've also been seen by PA Touraj Yari, and they work in tandem, so this review includes both of them. For the past 5 years I've dealing with a tremendously impactful (neurological/neuromuscular or both) degenerative condition. I have seen numerous doctor in search for solutions, or even just information that helps me with acceptance and access to care, even if the condition(s) are not curable. In the past, I've been sent by my PCP and others to other neurologists at a local teaching university medical center for care, as my conditions always seem to fall on the rare side of things. Unfortunately, each of those in the past ran one test, didn't find the answer, tapped out and had zero drive to find the answer. NOW, with Dr Purcell and PA Touraj, they're unstoppable. They literally dig until they find the answer. We're not there yet, but I'm positive we'll get there, because they DON'T throw their hands up in the air and give up, and blame it on the patient. They listen, think up avenues and tests, and seek actively to rule out or rule in things. And they're willing to collaborate with a neuromuscular specialist I had recently started working with when I got to them. They're kind, invested, willing, and even fun as persons. Above it all, both of them are so caring. Before coming here someone on a forum told me that Dr Purcell 'is blunt'. I told them I don't care as long as they have a drive for finding answers and helping. AND I do want to say that both in the case of Dr Purcell and PA Touraj Yari, I've found them to be extremely kind and personable. I was blessed to meet Dr. Ian Purcell of the Senta Medical Clinic in Feb. 2025. I have been bothered for over 30 years with bouts of vertigo, and my Dr. suggested that I give Dr. Purcell's clinic a 'try' since he had heard very positive things about the treatment. I have had several Epperly treatments over the years, and they have helped, some better than others; however, in the last year, I never seemed to get all the crystals aligned to the point that I seemed to be dizzy for much longer periods. It, of course, interferes with driving as well. Going to Dr. Purcell's clinic is one of the best choices I have ever made. They immediately made me feel that I had come to the right place. Dr. Purcell was very honest, as were all the folks on the medical team who treated me, that there are no guarantees as to whether the symptoms would return. I ended up going to 7 visits in the 'chair'. It isn't the most pleasant of experiences, BUT, it certainly took care of my problem. I highly recommend this practice. It is first-rate, and I found Dr. Purcell very knowledgeable in his expertise. He is the BEST! I waited to send in my review, just in case it came back, but since the end of March 2025, I have been 'dizzy-free'. Heartfelt thanks to Dr. Purcell, and his entire medical staff. The doctors here are not only on the cutting edge of the latest advances in medicine, but they are also extremely kind and caring, with wonderful bedside manner. DR. PURCELL, Is a wonderful doctor, listens to every word you say. He is very interested in you and getting to the root of the problem. I have now seen him two times and both times he was more than willing to listen to me and spend the time talking to me. Is PA. Evan is wonderful too, he is so easy to talk to and listens to what you have to say. Dr.Purcell wants to help you figure out how to take care of the issues you are having. He isn't one of those doctors that rushes you out of the office and just tries to put a bandaid on the issue. He looks for the cause and solves the problem. He is great! read more

I was referred to Dr. Purcell by another specialty provider for balance problems. At the first appointment I was asked questions in the exam room by a young male assistant of some kind. Despite telling him I was hard of hearing and could not understand him, he continued to ask me questions too quickly and while not facing me. He was impatient about how fast and precise my answers were, meaning I was too slow and imprecise for him. I guess youngsters do not understand patients do not carry 40-60+ years of precise memory regarding time periods and such in our brains, and that we mean it when we say we cannot understand what they are saying to us. Giving me a little time would have required slowing down though, and clearly he did not think he had time for that. Then a lovely young woman came in and talked to me. She was nicer. After that, Dr. Purcell came into the room, talked to me a little, but mostly talked to the woman. He was nice, but our interaction was pretty brief. Some of the information being relayed to Dr. Purcell was incorrect. It was not what I'd said. I corrected them because it mattered. I wondered how carefully they listened to answers versus making assumptions from the get-go. They had me make an appointment for the tests others here have described, and told me to get an updated hearing test. At the second appointment for tests, I did not see Dr. Purcell or the young woman again. It felt sort of like a factory operation, with patients lined up and moved from room to room and then out the door. The people I did see spoke to me very little. It felt individual and personal in no way whatsoever. Still, if Dr. Purcell lived up to his claims, I could deal with that. Regarding the hearing test I was told to get, I needed a referral, so they sent one to my audiologist. However, the referral did not include the information the audiologist's office needed. For whatever reason, the audiologist's staff would not not call Dr. Purcell's office themselves like they should have. After going round-and-round with the audiologist's office staff just trying to get another referral sent, leaving a phone message, sending faxes, and sending an email asking them to contact Dr. Purcell's office themselves to request another referral, and to please call me, I dumped the audiologist and found another one with a responsive office staff. Unfortunately, Dr. Purcell's office staff was even worse than the audiologist's. Not only did they not send my initial audiologist a properly completed referral after I requested it, nor did they contact her office to ask what was missing from the first one, but they ignored my requests for a referral to the new audiologist as well. I called and left messages plus faxed requests for a referral to the new audiologist three or four times EACH. In every communication I told them what I needed and why, and I requested they call me. I never heard from them. It felt like my communications went into a black hole. Finally, I actually got someone on the phone and she insisted they'd sent the referral to my new audiologist (but offered no reason, nor an apology, for no one calling me or acknowledging my communications in ANY way). On the day of my scheduled hearing test, the audiologist' s office still had not received a referral from Dr. Purcell, so they called Dr. Purcell's office directly, and guess what? The referral had NOT been sent to them, ever. Dr. Purcell's staff sent it then. I was entirely ignored, but at least they responded to the new audiologist's office. The audiologist faxed Dr. Purcell's office a copy of my hearing test report while I was still there. They told me, though, to hand-carry a copy with me, because Dr. Purcell's office routinely loses faxes. Well, when I went back, I forgot to take my own copy, and just like I'd been warned, Dr. Purcell's staff said they had not received a copy of the report. Like I said, I was there when it was faxed to them, so they lost it. I used to do medical social work in a medical facility and faxes were vitally important. We did not lose them. In fact, they were very helpful because information was in writing to be referred back to whenever needed. Further, all communications re patients' care are required to be part of patients' records! How do the three women behind that desk in a quiet office "lose" faxes?! By the time I made headway with Dr. Purcell's office staff (although I never did make headway with them, the audiologist's office did), I felt like I should be paid for my time, as I am not on his payroll, yet his staff made me do their job for them. For me to go to Dr. Purcell's clinic, it is a 90-minute round-trip drive I do not like, and his office staff losing that fax, so they were not entirely prepared for me when I was there, was the last straw for me. I do not know if Dr. Purcell is really all that or not; nor do I know what the tests I had done showed, because, fed up and offended, I never went back. read more

I called Dr. Purcell's office and spoke to a young lady and gave her my insurance, she would check to see if I was covered and I said if anything I will pay cash or with credit card. She never called. I called exactly a week later and left a message on the answering machine and no response. Do doctors still take the Hippocratic oath? read more

As a physician who for many years taught medical students at UCSD a course in the "Doctor-Patient Relationship," I can tell you that, Dr, Purcell represents the best. He connects well, is highly knowledgeable in his field, is very thorough in his examination, and truly cares about his patients. Been dealing with imbalance for over 30 years. Ian Purcell seemed to be the best doctor to deal with such symptoms. What I learned is that few doctors are able to deal with vertigo and imbalance disorders due to limitation in the medical field. It appears to me that this facility is more of a cookie-cutter approach to vertigo/imbalance issues. I've been going to this office for around 2 years now. I've see Mr. Purcell one time. After that, he has his staff/nurses follow the cookie-cutter program. See if this sounds familiar. Step 1: detect the level of vertigo/imbalance you have (rotary chair) a: *attempt to detect Nystagmus (fast movement of pupils which usually indicates crystals in the ear canals / if detected, perform various forms of "Epley or similar maneuvers" *note: hope this is the issue / it's common and very curable even by your primary doctor via physical therapy (sometimes for free depending on insurance) Step 2: *one or likely more hearing tests *note: To detect things like Meniere's disease Step 3: prescribe some sort of antiviral remedy like Acyclovir (if it's caused by a virus / pretty unlikely but why not) Step 4: prescribe some form of strong corticosteroid / in the hopes that it's caused by an inner ear migraine (pretty unlikely) Step 5: get a cat-scan to rule out any type of inner ear or brain issue Step 6: not much else to do / you are out of luck and likely a lot of $ depending on your insurance The worst part of the experience with this doctor is he sells you on hope (at a cost). For anyone suffering from vertigo/imbalance I pray for you. I would suggest finding help with your primary doctor. read more

Dr Purcell and his PA's may be the best doctors around, but their surrounding staff leave a lot to be desired. Not sure if there's just too much going on in that office or what, but no one should have to call 3-4 times over a 5 week period to get status on authorizations for testing, etc. and every single time it's "I'll send blank a message." And every. Single. Time. There is absolutely no follow up. No return phone call. Not even a "if you'd like to discuss this, you need to schedule an appointment." Absolutely nothing. Again, staff is nice. Doctors and PA and Scribes were nice. But efficient? I have yet to see it. read more

Was suffering from a severe case of vertigo which came on very suddenly. Suffered for 3 weeks before I was able to get into see Dr. Purcell. From the moment you walk into their offices, you felt cared about and comfortable. I was first seen by Jake Perkins, MPAP - PA and he did a thorough exam and listened intently to everything I had to say about my vertigo. Then Dr. Purcell came and did another thorough exam with eye and strenngth testing to access my needs. I was put into the "chair" and rotated with eye goggles on so they could see my eye movements when in the dizzying positions. Then they put me into a number of positioning motions in the chair and AMAZINGLY my inner ear crystals went back into place and I was no longer having crazy spins, nausea, dizziness and balance issues. What a GIFT! One session and I feel like new again. Thank you to all the wonderful staff. The doughnut at the end was the cherry on top! read more

Don't expect to see Dr. Purcell when you get to your appointment and don't expect to get your prescriptions in a timely manner. Paid out of pocket to see Purcell and to my dismay saw a PA instead. When complained they said "sorry, they'll try do a better job letting patients know it's mainly a PA ran practice. I also had to call 3 times to get the prescriptions I needed ordered. Dr Purcell is my favorite doctor! I have had a history of "stroke like" migraines for years. I was ready give up finding a caring and super knowledgeable doctor! Went to see Dr. Purcell in March of 2022. Flew in from out of state after hearing that he was THE specialist to see for vertigo. Long story short, he did NOTHING to help. Sold me a pair of glasses that was used so he could see my eyes without an office visit (again, out of state). He virtually looked at my eyes and said "Yep, you're having an episode. Do 3 rollovers". That lovely information costs $225. Billed for 40 minute consult that lasted at best half that time. Then two years later we get the final invoice that required me calling the insurance company about an old account and wasted 3 hours getting that info. All in all seeing Dr Purcell was a total waste of time ... an expensive total waste of time. I cannot recommend this DR for vertigo. read more

What an exceptional experience visiting this office for the dizzy spells I have been experiencing for years now. I also have a lot of back pain due to degenerative disk disease - all of which was addressed in my initial visit. The staff is so attentive and prompt as well as caring.
