On a whirlwind 2 week vacation to Ireland, the girlfriend & I tried to see & experience absolutely as much of this incredible land as we could. We did not accomplish every last activity we wished we could have on our rather ambitious itinerary. Nonetheless, we did discover a land of numerous stunning & magical wonders. We did see a land of unending natural beauty. We did learn of a land with a monumentally long history of trials, tragedies & triumphs. We did get to meet many kind, humorous, warm & generous people. Our vacation to Ireland was just 2 weeks, but that was time enough to know this is a land easy to love & a land to be sorely missed.
No doubt about it, I love me some Jameson. With our hotel being not-too-long of a walk away, the girlfriend & I made the short trek on foot to the Old Jameson Distillery on our last day in town before heading out to the country. We found the ceremonial home of one of my favorite elixirs squirrelled away through side streets & alleyways.
Ceremonial, as there is no longer any operational whiskey production at the Old Jameson Distillery. Whiskey making has been replaced by a media presentation, a guided tour of exhibits showcasing the process & equipment previously used here & tastings. Outside the main entrance is a small courtyard with a big copper still on display. Just inside is a large foyer. To the left is a gift shop with all things Jameson & stairs leading up to a restaurant. Directly ahead is the tour ticket counter & tour starting point. To the right is a glitzy bar area.
The girlfriend & I arrived shortly after the restaurant had closed for the day, but just in time for the last tour. Tickets are €13.50 per adult, a substantial amount but not unusual for this sort of attraction. I found the tour to be interesting & informative. Though whiskey isn't made here anymore, we did get to survey much of the distillery as it was when it once was operational. The tour concludes with a Jameson drink (neat, on the rocks or in a cocktail) & the chance to be an "official" Jameson taster. The girlfriend & I both leapt at this opportunity & were both chosen among the near dozen selectees. As tasters, we drank & compared Jameson, Johnnie Walker Black Label & Jack Daniels. After all our hard work drinking more whiskeys, we were awarded Official Jameson Taster certificates. I'm a sucker for swag so this was grand.
Before leaving, the girlfriend went over to the bar & got us both Irish Coffees. I love Irish Coffee, have had it many places & this was the best Irish Coffee ever. This was an excellent exclamation point on the end of an already grand experience. Go to the Old Jameson Distillery for a fun tour & fabulous Irish Coffee. read more
