It provides some good neighborhood space. Part of being in The City is understanding how many really special things you can come across living in San Francisco. This is one of those special places. It really doesn't look like much from the street. So I think how it is super underrated is a plus. Very clean and the grass condition is good. It's more lush compared to the dry patch of dirt it was before and worth checking out. Out of the 3 I like North Lake the best as it feels the most rustic and natural whereas the other two feel man made. It's a great place for a birder. Birds are everywhere. North Lake has monthly cleanups through Golden Gate Bird Alliance where you basically garden and get rid of non native plants.

A quick tip: because of the way the Wood Line is designed, this stretch can turn into a full-on wind tunnel. Definitely layer up; it can get chilly even on a sunny day. What makes this area so special for young students is the natural layout. The rows of eucalyptus trees create built-in boundaries, which makes it much easier to manage a group while still giving them a sense of freedom and exploration. There are also spots nearby where kids can build and expand on makeshift shelters using fallen branches, perfect for imaginative play, teamwork, and a little hands-on engineering. There are often dogs off leash in this part of the Presidio, but we've never had any issues along this particular stretch. One especially memorable visit included spotting an owl nesting in the trees. A park ranger was stationed nearby to ensure the owl's safety, and my students even got to ask questions and learn more about the habitat. It turned into an unexpected and magical lesson in urban wildlife. If you're looking for a unique, outdoor San Francisco, add the Wood Line to your list.

Perhaps one will take a seat and pause. However, enter the winding path and one enters a quiet space, a world far from the nearby street. Treasure it as it is a special area, and a city park. Notice the sound of the leaves of the trees in the breeze. Wonder about the people who are lucky to live nearby. View the man enjoying his book. Watch the lady doing tai-chi. Perhaps you will join her one day, or create your own exercise. Or just sit. Enjoy this beautiful park, part of unique San Francisco.

Alas, back in 1971 when we were all still recovering from the Summer of Love, the Board of Supervisors decided to let this space become a mini-park, and 49 years later, here it is. The area is just 25 feet wide and goes down a gentle stepwise slope for 125 feet where a concrete opening is surrounded by bench seating. There I saw a concrete pig in its own boxed pen and a young backpacker getting some shuteye. The landscaping is quite impressive. Worth a respite during a pandemic. Looks like it could be in ancient China. The structure is impressive and you can get some good selfies. Beautiful looking and it serves a practical purpose of hosting gatherings. It's got some interesting history. This was a gift to San Francisco from Taipei. It was presented in 1976 and installed. Lots of other cool stuff around it including a waterfall. Good place to have a picnic or a gathering. There's also plenty of trails if wanting to go hiking. Have some fun. It's okay to bring beers and wines but not liquors. They also allow grilling but you have to bring your own though.

Jack Early Park is one of those hidden gems in North Beach that you could easily miss unless you…read moreknow where to look. Tucked up a steep hill at the end of Pfeiffer Street, it was created by a local resident, Jack Early, who spent years in the early 1960s transforming what was once a rocky, neglected patch of land into a small, peaceful garden. He cleared debris, brought in soil, and planted trees, flowers, and shrubs, eventually gifting the space to the city. It's a great example of how one person's effort can leave a lasting impact on a neighborhood. Getting there is part of the experience. You climb a narrow staircase between buildings, and at the top, you're rewarded with a small concrete terrace and one of the best panoramic views in the area. On a clear day, you can see Alcatraz Island, Pier 39, and even the Golden Gate Bridge all in one sweep. It's not a large park, but that's part of its charm. There are a few benches, some greenery, and just enough space to sit, relax, or enjoy a quiet moment away from the crowds. Whether you're a local or just exploring North Beach, it's a worthwhile stop if you're up for a short climb and want a different perspective of the city.

It's not that tiny actually, certainly not claustrophobic, you could probably fit like 10 people up there (though it would be a tight squeeze). And yet it's hidden among the neighborhood homes and trees, so it's quite nice. But only two seats up there, covered in graffiti of course (we'll call it art). And more seating along the stairway, ya know, cuz there are lots of stairs to climb, so why not take a rest halfway up those steps, especially cuz it's kinda steep. The secluded environment and lovely views are what makes this park special.
