After getting an appointment the glasses broke. They won't fix them and I wasn't given the option to purchase the frame that broke. The ladies at the door weren't interested in the fact my vision is really bad and without glasses driving could be a tragedy. So no this establishment I wouldn't recommend I rate it a ZERO. Dr. Jane Hafen is careful and patient when she explains what is going on with my eyes. I have very bad eyesight all my life and require multifocal contact lenses. Not only did she adjust my prescription extremely carefully during my follow-up, but she turned me onto a new brand of multifocal lenses that have improved my vision and are more comfortable. She also carefully goes over which contact solutions might cause irritation in my eyes. She clearly has a lot of experience and cares about her patients' vision. I visited them for an annual vision check and am very satisfied with their service. Excellent doctor and helpful staffs.

VSP member. Made an appointment online, and upon showing up to that appointment I noticed everyone in the office had a mask on (only 2 employees in the office). That prompted me to immediately ask if I was going to be denied service if I don't wear a mask. One employee locked the door behind me (illegal fyi) while the other answered, "It's the optometrist's policy". I said I didn't want to wear one since everyone else is and that if it was going to be a requirement it should be in the appointment process. The employee then told me that I was informed, and there would be a $75 non-cancellation fee. I acknowledged and attempted to leave, and met the locked door which I had to ask to be unlocked to leave. Upon re-going through the website's appointment process, I verified that nowhere in the process does it tell you that masks are required, however in one of the 4 emails I got from them confirming the appointment, one line does say "we need you to wear your mask". So when I received their bill in the mail and called to pay. What I didn't know until attempting to make an appointment with a different Optometrist who isn't afraid of the environment, was that my VSP benefits were held up by this original InVision/Jane Optometrist. Maybe that is common practice to hold someone's benefits hostage for $75 on account of a mask requirement burried in one of 4 emails sent to me AFTER I set the appointment... but hey, don't spend it all in one place, and get some fresh air? 3 Stars because the appointment process worked, the employees didn't give me attitude, and they were successful in taking the lien off of my vision benefits. Suggestions: 1) Put your ever-important mask requirement in the appointment-making process, not just a line in a slew of confirmation emails. 2) Don't lock the door behind customers. If there is an emergency and your employees or customers are delayed in exiting the building, you would be held liable for their damages since it is already illegal to lock those doors during business/operating hours. You can change your door hardware such that people can exit but not enter... but you can't dead-bolt people inside your building during business hours. read more

They're great. I love that it's all all women staff as far as I've seen. They're color scheme is really asthetically pleasant and friendly. The staff is all friendly and super helpful as well. In short: - overall negative/rude experience - religious scripture used for eye exam material - refuses modes of modern technology to provide a prescription to you (or makes it inconvenient to you to go elsewhere) - condescending pamphlet on why you should only trust In Vision Optometry when you attempt to get your glasses elsewhere - no warmth or explanation when a brand new prescription was issued - Optometrist was cold and seemed inconvenienced during appt ----- I visited this office as a first time patient and had a terrible first impression. Not only did I encounter less than friendly service, I was ushered through the eye appointment without much explanation of each test and I was pushed off between multiple people. It had been a few years since my last eye appointment at a fantastic Optometrist in Mission Bay. Then in the middle of the exam I was asked to read out loud a paragraph in small print on a laminated card. Mid paragraph I realized that what i was reading was religious material. YES. Religious scripture. I should have walked out at this point. Finally when the doctor came in she was very cold toward me and it felt like I was more of an inconvenience. After doing some eye tests with the projector, she just walked out of the room and didn't say anything. I wasn't sure if she was coming back in, so I just sat and waited. I was then ushered out of the room by her assistant and seated at the front tables and told to go pick out glasses. Umm, for what? I have never needed glasses and at no point did anyone stop and say, by the way your eyes have changed and you will now need a prescription. It was jolting. Here I was sitting there surprised and then was rushed and pressured to pick out glasses from a bunch of outdated and generic frames. None were my style or brands I was remotely interested in but I took some selfies and told her that I wanted time to think about it. I was met with bit of attitude. Seriously? This is all new to me. I wanted time to shop around and look at style options/modern brands. I decided that I wanted to get frames at Oliver Peoples and rx sunglasses at Warby Parker so I called their office to ask them to email me the prescription (which they never offered me) while I was standing in the Warby Parker store in Union Square. They refused. They would not email it to me or fax it to me and said that I could either pick it up in person or they would send it to me by SNAIL MAIL. So I had to wait 3-4 days to receive MY prescription by mail. I finally received the hand written prescription along with a pamphlet that was included in the envelope.The tone of the pamphlet completely rubbed me the wrong way and is borderline propaganda material. It went beyond informative and was condescending, shaming anyone interested in seeking eyewear from other retailers. But you know, I kind of get it. They make money on selling frames and shilling insurance approved brands, but at least get some hip and modern options! I won't back and I don't recommend visiting here if you prefer respectful service and don't like to be treated like you are incompetent of making your own educated decisions on eyewear and don't appreciate having religion shoved on you. If you do choose to go to here, request your prescription before you leave their office to prevent the irritating delay that I did. read more

I had a fine experience a year ago, but after scheduling my appointment this year, the office rescheduled twice because they couldn't get insurance authorization (the same I used last year) and then called me a third time ON THE DAY of my appointment to cancel altogether. They said they still were unable to connect with my insurance. VERY disappointing and frustrating. They should know which insurance they contract with and to string me along for more than 2 months is unacceptable. When you need new contacts there is the initial appointment and then the doctor makes you come in after wearing the contacts to make sure they work ok even if you have been wearing contacts for years and will not give you your prescription unless you come in for the second visit. So you will have to pay for another visit to the doctor for her to tell you everything is fine with the contacts. Ridiculous. read more

She is rigorous about getting the prescription right and diligent about my aging eye care. Dr. Hafen and her staff office gave me the best eye exam of my life. It took much longer than I expected, but it was worth it.

I've been going here for a little two years. I paid well over $800 for a pair of glasses and contact lenses. I also paid about $475 for a year of vision care. Never mind that I had insurance; I had to pay nearly $500 out of pocket to keep seeing the doctor. I did, thinking I would get a higher level of service than I had received at Lens Crafters, Pearl, etc... but no. Over two years later and I still don't know for what I paid $475. I went in for a check-up recently and there was a mix-up with my insurance so they wouldn't even see me - I drove al the way to downtown Oakland, fought for parking six blocks away, all just to be turned away because of some stupid insurance issue. They were not only rude, but treated me like I was a jerk (I generally am not classified as such). Me thinks they could've just taken the visit out of my $475 goodwill payment. Other con's: if your appointment is at, let's say 1pm, you won't be called in for at least 45 minutes. Then it's another 20 minutes or so in the small room before the doctor comes in. So, all in all, a check up appointment takes about 2 hours. I was there for about 3 hours when I got the exam and picked out my frames. Also, frames are way over-priced for the same brands you could get at Walmart. I recommend any strip mall chain optometry over this place. Hands down. read more

I'm sure Dr. Hafen is great and I was recommended by a friend. However, her support staff (especially Barbara) is simply condescending and unhelpful. Upon checking in at the front desk and in the exam I am quizzed multiple times why I did not follow instructions either on the website or in email. Well..... I didn't use the website - I booked through your support staff - who was less than informative. I should have known better on the initial call in making the appointment when Barbara was less than pleasant and actually very officious and condescending in the first conversation. Yes, I did not read or follow the instructions in the email and apologize for that. However, I did not need to be reprimanded and told numerous times by the staff and the doctor as to what a poor and inept patient I am. I did not come to get an eye exam and made to feel small and bullied by this office. If Dr. Hafen is such a wonderful doctor - then she needs to be a wonderful manager and figure out how to work and train her resources. Once that is done, I am sure this will be a wonderful place for eye exams. However, if you can't manage your staff then the bottom line experience for the patient is short of adequate. read more

I've been going to Dr. Hafen for several years and found her to be very thorough with eye examinations. She has the latest technology for your eye examinations and explains each test to you clearly. The office is clean and appealing. He techs have a great disposition and act professionally. As far a billing and insurance, I have never had any issues. I find the comment by Becky H. incorrect. Dr. Hafen has a wonderful manner about her and she was able to put me completely at ease about my eyes. I love my eyes. All two of them. I had a rough time after I moved away from my childhood eye doc and had all sorts of student eye-docs-in-training rush in to have a look at my eyes each time I went in for a simple check-up or fitting for glasses. Dr. Hafen was a wonderful transition from all that nonsense. She talked me out of taking drastic measures and was very comforting in explaining what was really going on with my eyes. On my first visit, I found the team and the facilities at In Vision to be top rate. Everyone who I encountered was friendly and professional. They all made me feel comfortable and at ease. Even when my insurance information was not readily available, Lani cheerfully volunteered to contact the company and retrieved my info. Trinh was patient while I filled out my first-visit paperwork and super sweet when conducting my initial tests. Erica was fun and hugely helpful in choosing my frames; I felt like she totally got me! Dr. Hafen was personable and I really enjoyed my time with her. I felt as though she went out of her way to connect while thoroughly examine my eyes. She did not convey any type of judgement when I mentioned how long it had been since my last eye exam. These things are meaningful to me. The pricing was very reasonable and they have a wide selection of frames to choose from. I had a truly excellent experience at In Vision! Best optometrist's office I've been to in the Bay Area, hands down! Her support staff were amazing from the first moment I walked in. They helped me make the most of my insurance and even saved me money. Most importantly, I felt comfortable and respected. As for Jane Hafen- wow, what a woman. She is efficient, direct, straight forward but patient. She listens and makes sure that she gets your prescription just right. I am thrilled I finally found a home for my eye care needs in the Bay. I had a horrific experience at one place in San Francisco- the support staff were rude and the doctor even got my prescription wrong due to a rushed eye exam. The other person I saw in SF was a good doctor but she was not a good listener and her support staff were abysmal. I am so grateful customer service and excellence come first at Jane Hafen's office! I would recommend completing the new patient information forms before arriving, showing up 15 minutes early, and making sure to bring all your glasses, contact case boxes, contact case, etc just so that it runs smoothly. I have seen Dr. Hafen for the past few years for eye exams and glasses and have been consistently impressed with her level of service. After seeing her, I will never go back to a "strip mall chain" again. My eyes are too important to skimp on, especially since having a thorough eye exam can detect other health problems that have nothing to do with your eyes. The cheaper and faster chains cut lots of corners and tell their exam docs to simply not do a lot of what Dr. Hafen does. She is an expert and I feel completely at ease knowing that she has given me an excellent exam. If you want the best, you can't do better than Dr. Hafen. read more

I was a first time patient here a couple weeks ago and everything started off fine. Her support staff provided me with the cost of my eye exam and contact lens evaluation which I agreed to before anything took place. Jane was very thorough with her eye exam and was very friendly. Her office is in a very convenient location for me and I was convinced that I had found my new optometrist. I paid my balance and left happy that day. A week later, I received a bill in the mail with a hand written note stating: "Insurance does not cover contact evaluation, please pay $70" First of all, I would have appreciated a phone call to have this explained to me rather than a hand written note. Secondly, don't you normally agree to an amount before the exam? There was clearly a mistake on her end and I was expected to pay for it? I was upset over this charge and I decided to call her office. Vanessa picked up and said she would have it looked at and would call me back shortly. I agreed and did not receive a call back that day so I decided to call again the next day. Vanessa picked up again and said there were no updates and she would call me back. Another four days passed and I decided to call again. This time, Kim picked up and said I didn't have to worry about the bill. She sounded annoyed with me and seemed more interested in getting off the phone than explaining to me what had happened. It was not very reassuring. I felt completely out of the loop and would have appreciated a phone call at any point during this experience. As a first time patient, this was a horrible first impression. Dr. Hafen is a very competent optometrist and a kind and nice person too. Her only minus is that (most likely out of compassion) she choose the wrong supporting staff, a lethal blend of arrogance and incompetence. Their skills in customer care wound only benefit from an extended stay in some Marine Corps Basic Training Camp, notorious for their polite handling of the newcomers. They treat you like a slave, you wait for hours after being forced to come when THEY want, as a routine they think that you owe them money, and/or that your insurance won't cover this or that. Sometimes Dr. Hafen has to step in herself to stop them, but she cannot be always present to prevent their mischiefs. I would give 5 STARS to Dr. Hafen, minus 1 STAR because of the wrong choice of her staff. I would give 0 STARS to her wolf pack. I have been using Dr. Hafen for more than 20 years. She has always provided professional, friendly service. I have purchased several pair of glasses there and the professional staff have always been very helpful and on some occasions have gone the extra mile to make adjustments. During the time I have been coming in, there have been some front desk staff that has been condescending and officious, but these folks were no longer there by my next visit. Having run a professional office myself, I understand that this is part of what you must contend with from time to time and I think Dr. Hafen is doing what is necessary to provide a friendly, professional atmosphere.
