This visit was for my annual checkup. Far more than just checking my prescription. Multiple scans before me even meeting the optometrist. Dr. Lam decided she should dilate my eyes to both check the back of my eyes and to have OCT scans taken of both my central veins. While waiting for my eyes to dilate, she had the receptionist check me out to save my time. Everyone that works there is so personable at the same time as being totally professional. I can't write a yelp review regarding getting an eye exam at Grand Lake Optometry. I get my eye exam with my medical provider since it's free there. But after getting my eye glass prescription a couple months back, I have been shopping around a few different optometry stores looking for a frame to fit my fat head. After failing miserably, I finally came to Grand Lake. Upon walking in, the front desk asked the reason for my visit. I let them know I was shopping for a frame. So as I started looking, an employee named Trung helped locate a frame that would fit my fat face and fit the description of what I wanted. Trung pulled out a bunch of options and of course the one I liked the most was a high end brand. Long story short, I spared no expense reasoning that eye glasses are worn on my face, so spending for a good looking comfortable pair of glasses is worth it. Trung as well as the rest of the staff were extremely friendly and helpful. I received my glasses ten days after I purchased them. I will be back again when it's time to get another pair of glasses. read more

The epitome of a neighborhood optometrist! Even though I've been going to another optometrist for frames and prescriptions, Grand Lake Optometry has always been ready to do minor repairs on my glasses (broken nose pieces, missing screws, bent frames, etc.) And not once have they charged me a penny! I did finally make an appointment to go into the office and after the initial hiccups about the insurance I was very pleased with the overall service. The workers in reception were very kind and professional, and the doctor was exceptional and I appreciated her kindness and the office speak very clean and organized with updated technology which made things much easier. The in-office visit was honestly one of the best I've ever had with an eye doctor so I would definitely recommend them! My one caveat after the insurance misunderstanding was that when I finally was able to make an appointment the prices for by exam were a bit higher than I was initially quoted. My Insurance benefit covers $450 for in office services, exams etc and also covers the cost of contacts or glasses within that amount. My exam which was only for contacts and the exam plus 6 months of contact lenses which was for toric lenses for one eye used up my entire benefit and I still had to pay around $55 out of pocket. I know that in the grand scheme of things that probably doesn't sound like a lot for some folks but as somebody who is lower income it was a bit of a shock to me. I also didn't realize when I was initially getting the information for my exam that because I was a new patient there I couldn't just get a contact lens exam I would have to get the full eye exam which is why the price was higher than I was initially quoted which I was frustrated about because I thought I would have everything covered but I realized that miscommunications and misunderstandings happen and I do appreciate the service I received overall! read more

Staff were friendly initially, but they gave me the wrong prescription glasses that was way too strong and giving me almost double vision. This was after I had dropped $300 to have all of the special coatings. I called to let them know that it was the wrong lens and I couldn't use them and the woman argued with me that they couldn't have made a mistake and refused to fix it. So now I'm out that money and I can't use my insurance to get another pair. I ultimately had to go somewhere else and get ANOTHER pair. Save yourself the money, because that's all they care about here is upgrading the sale as much as possible then leaving you high and dry. read more

I'll try to keep this short. I had a possible eye emergency. They offered me an appt within an hr. I was seen right away, tested, dilated, tested again, and given results immediately. I work at a hospital. My coworkers said I should see an OPTHAMOLOGIST rather than an OPTOMETRIST. I scheduled an OPTHAMOLGIST appt for the next day. The experience at Grand Lake was far and away better than the ophthalmologist's office. Better patient care, more thorough testing, better/newer technology,MORE testing, friendlier staff. I didn't have a great experience with Grand Lake Optometry and will not be returning. First, they said they'd order frames for me but never followed up but, more importantly, they gave me an incorrect prescription. Unfortunately, I did not notice it till I took an eye test with glasses on 2 months later and they said they could not help me as it was not in their window for returns. I went somewhere else and got the right prescription. I told them I would write a bad review on yelp, they said they were sorry, so here it is. read more

Are we to believe that a business is in the practice of giving away an optional, unnecessary, and expensive add-on service to every customer that comes through the door and that payment is strictly voluntary, when it costs four times the charge of a normal eye exam? No, that is laughable. On its face, the business model is deceptive, and, unfortunately, seemingly well-practiced: 1. First, try to slip it in the paperwork without the customer noticing. 2. When the customer notices and questions it, insist that it needs to be done because the doctor thinks it is "necessary" (when it is clearly an optional money-maker, look it up online), leaving the $40 fee on the paperwork). 3. When that fails, try to conduct the screening anyways without the customer's consent, ignoring multiple unequivocal statements by the customer that they don't want it done, telling the customer "you can discuss it with the doctor later." 4. When that fails and the customer is about to lose it, back down and then later blame the customer for "not understanding" the benevolent nature of the business to give expensive and unnecessary services away. Do it to every customer and maybe some won't notice and object. But others will (see other reviews which complain of hidden costs and nontransparent pricing). Miscommunication? No. The customer did not understand? No. Consumer beware. read more

UGH. I am DONE. This year my exam was a disaster from start to finish. They kept me waiting before my exam started, then had different staff members doing the prelimary testing. The doctor who saw me seemed to have reviewed someone else's file before coming into my room. The doctor laughed when discussing my RX....ummmm, that's disrespectful. I have been wearing extended wear lenses for a number of years. We discussed whether there were any new lenses that may be worth me considering.....and I was told it would be $200 for me to try different lenses. That is more than the cost of an entire year's worth of lenses. At the end of the appointment - after my eyes had been dialated they asked me to review a HIPPA document and sign that I had seen it.....ummmmm.....hello. you just dialted my eyes. I am going to have to find someone new before my next exam. read more

Amazing customer service. My frames I purchased here broke due to a manufacturing issue within a year of purchase, and of course this had to happen within a few days of me leaving for a trip out of the country for a few months (eek!). I called staff and they immediately made room in their schedule to inspect the frames and order a replacement, which arrived within 5 days of the break. Thanks to their support, what I thought would be an expensive and time-consuming nightmare with me wearing taped frames all summer turned into a hassle-free replacement at no cost in time for my travels. Booked an appointment based on reviews and a promo my insurance provider has with them, but it didn't stand out to me as anything special. I went in for an eye exam and booked for myself and my fiancé. We went in on a Saturday afternoon but there was still a wait. While we were waiting they allowed me to start taking a look at frames. I had not gotten an eye exam in over 10 years so I went ahead and started looking. Once the tech was ready, my checkup started. The whole eye exam was fairly easy, although it felt a little awkward with the tech, the optometrist was quite pleasant. Once I was done I was told I had almost perfect vision, yet I still walked out with prescription glasses with a blue light filter, and a large bill. I asked about a special promotion my insurance was having with this business, and they quickly dismissed it and said if I used the promotion I'd have to pick from a selected few, which I was never shown in the first place, they were tucked away in a drawer. Upon further research on my part I found out that certain designer glasses were part of the promotion, but I didn't get the opportunity to use it. My glasses took about 3-4 weeks to arrive and when I picked them up, the environment was actually more awkward and unwelcoming than the first. It got the job done but I'm not sure if I'd go back. Customer service is very important to me and feeling unwelcomed was a big downside here. read more

Plus they have Covid safety protocols in place which made me very comfortable knowing they are taking the right precautions. I need reading glasses, nothing fancy. My insurance covers $200 frames and progressive lenses so I figured I'll get a nice pair of bifocals that I can keep on while I'm not reading. I go in get an exam and get my eyes dilated. First problem I encounter is that all of the frames have tiny price tags that I can't read with my dilated eyes and I get little help locating the sub $200 frames. The frames are apparently intentionally laid out to make it hard to find the cheaper frames. So I spend half an hour locating the few sub $200 frames. But after all that my glasses are still coming in at $300. Weird coatings and extra stuff is being added to the lenses. I was given no help trying to find a frame and lense that was covered by my insurance. It's all a scam. read more

Very through examination, professional staff. +5 stars Con: The really hard sell to buy frames/lenses from them. -1 star My old optometrist didn't believe me when I said I couldn't see correctly with the prescription he gave me. He dismissed me when I told him everything was blurry and I was getting headaches and told me I just had to get used to them. Well, I never did and I had to suffer with those glasses for almost 2 years until I finally could afford to go to the optometrist again. A friend told me about Dr. Yuen so I decided to try her. When I first went to her a number of years ago, she looked at my glasses and said, "You couldn't see well with them because they are way off!" Dr. Yuen gave me the correct prescription and I've been back every year and always completely satisfied with her diagnosis. The exam is professional and very through. She doesn't take short cuts with the exam and always takes the time to really listen to what you tell her about the changes to your vision since the last time you came in. The staff are personable, friendly and customer service oriented. I go there every year for the great prescription, but I really dislike the hard sell to buy frames and lenses from them and the reason I'm giving 4 stars instead of 5. If I say, "No thank you" or "Not today" once or twice that aught to suffice, but they really lay on the pressure trying to overcome your objections. It's not only the front staff, but Dr. Yuen herself. I'm sure that their main income is from the frames and lenses they sell, but $400+ dollars that it would cost is not something I could afford right then, even with my insurance discount. Also the selection is limited and with so many other optical places out there, it's nice to be able to shop around and see a lot of frames if they are going to sit on your face all day. The hard sell was so intense it made me wonder if the rent was too high or they'd been to a sales seminar. Honestly, I ended up getting mine from one of the many places online that offer great frames+lenses for around $50. It doesn't need to cost $300-$500 to look great. So go for the great examination and correct prescription, just brace yourself for the hard sell and be ready to say, "No, thank you, not today" a lot. Dr. Yuen and staff: Please take "NO" or "I'm not ready to make a selection today" for an answer the first time someone says it. read more

After my *horrible* experiences with Dr. Kha from East Bay Vision Center- Fremont, I was both eager and hesitant to try a new optometrist. Thankfully, I was not disappointed in coming here! Last week, I saw Dr. Chong Yu. He is a very friendly and gentle man with a great sense of humor and keen interest in my vision care. He treated me with understanding and respect, and showed genuine interest in me as a person as well as a patient. I was immediately at ease with this man as he stuck some of the most advanced optometry equipment I've ever seen in my face. He patiently explained everything that was going on if I showed even a hint of curiosity, and was happy to show me what the photos of my eyeballs looked like, and easily answered all of my questions. On top of the really great doctor, it turns out that higher quality lenses (of the CORRECT prescription even!) are vastly less expensive here, in this beautiful, well-kept office. For a year's supply of two-week disposables, I am paying HALF what that -other- place wanted to charge me for six months. The two other members of the staff that I met, receptionist Veronica and the assistant (I did not get her name, eep!) were completely wonderful. Very warm and friendly, immediately likable. We had a lot of fun, with many jokes (most at my dilated-eyes expense). It was actually a good time! This is the first optometrist I have ever been to that takes your blood pressure and pulse during the standard eye exam. Talk about thorough! I've a follow-up appointment tomorrow, and an exam for my husband too, and I don't expect any disappointment there. Parking is street-meter and a pay-as-you-go lot, and wasn't full even on a Saturday, late morning. read more

I hadn't visited the optometrist for several years after I moved to Oakland from San Francisco, and it was time to get my act together and get my overworked-by-computer eyes checked out. This office being right down the street from me, is easy to get to. The main reason I chose this office: 1) I saw that they have good selection of frames, 2) they are open from 9am to 1pm on Saturdays so I don't have to take time off work to see an optometrist, 3) they take VSP, and 4) they have a good review from Yelp. While I did not see Dr. Yuen, I found her colleague Dr. Mahrukh Chishty-Qawami very pleasant to be around. She is patient and very good at explaining all the questions I have (after being alien from all the exam procedures for so long). The staff also explained my bill and were friendly as well as professional. The office appeared to be very kid-friendly to me as well. They had toys for kids in the office and the couple of times I went there I saw mommies with their children. read more

Thorough Exam + Latest Technology + Attentive Staff = Great Eye Doc! Me: extremely near-sighted, wearing coke-bottle glasses since 4th grade, can't even see good enough to find my glasses on the nightstand a few inches away, currently wearing contacts -9.0 and -8.50 (really bad). Looking for a doctor who was in my insurance network and came across Dr. Yuen on Yelp. Veronica, the front desk admin was very professional in scheduling my appointment, telling me to wear my contacts to the appointment, to bring the contact box so they could see brand and power, and she also let me know that my insurance did not cover the contact lens fitting exam so that would be $56 I would pay. I saw Dr. Yuen on 02/24. This office has all the latest technology. They even have the Visual Field Test, something I have only seen before in an ophthalmologist's office. Dr. Yuen is very professional and really took the time to learn about my lifestyle, work and health history to determine the best vision correction solution for me. I received a very comprehensive exam and felt like all the staff was attentive and caring. Dr. Yuen personally called me to see how my new trial pair of contacts was working out. Veronica handled all the insurance stuff great and gave me paperwork to mail in for a $20 rebate promotion on my contacts. I chose to go ahead with the retinal photo and pay the $25. I did a little research and found that it is used to monitor changes in the retina. It can detect certain diseases like hypertension, diabetes, hyperthyroid and high cholesterol. Dr. Yuen's office can file a claim with your regular medical insurance if the photo does show a condition. There is a bit salesmanship that goes on with regard to selling you a new pair of glasses. Personally, it did not bother me, I understand that selling frames is a part of their business. I just communicated that my current pair was good enough because I wear contacts mostly and I was going to use my insurance allowance on contacts. They have a nice selection of great looking frames. I think some people do need a bit of a 'push' to get them into updating their look. My observation was that they will spend the time with you to select the right frame that looks good. I'd really consider going with the BLING: pink Dior frames with rhinestones, LOVE it! read more

I've been seeing Drs. Yu and Yuen for something between 5-10 years. They and their staff are absolutely spectacular. Dr. Yu saw me several years ago in an emergency situation where I'd had sudden, searing eye pain. While clearly, the highest priority is proper treatment, one thing that was incredibly valuable to me was Dr. Yu's manner - his confidence and calm made me feel reassured and safe at a time when I was terrified and worried my vision had been permanently damaged. Dr. Yuen is similarly confidence-inspiring, knowledgable and friendly. The staff is great - helpful, cheerful, friendly, and immaculately professional. Going to the eye doctor doesn't seem like something that should normally be a wonderful experience, but with them, it is. I'd recommend them without reservation. read more
