We were making our generational mint recipe that we frequently make during holiday seasons. Now Closed. There was an article in the newspaper that people were interested in buying the business but it must not have happened. The signs are still up but the windows are papered over in La Canada. I have been going to this business since they were located on Honolulu in Montrose. There is no business around here like this that I am aware of. They had very cool stuff for baking including a huge array of edible glitter, colored sugars, candy molds and cake toppers. Finally got the chance to check this store out last week as traffic was bad and I had to take the route that takes me past this store. I have to say, it was quite hidden. Their signed got buried behind some construction. I literally circled the parking lot and street a few times but it was worth it. As soon as you walk in, supplies hit you dead on and man, it's so hard not to throw everything in your basket. Prices are very fair and choices are abundant. No spent a good amount of time looking at everything. Staff were very friendly and did come around often to check up on me and make sure I was ok. HOW CAN A SHOP SO SMALL HAVE EVERYTHING I NEED?! It's like the Mary Poppins of cake and candy supplies. The endless bag has everything, in every size, shape, and color. And what they don't have, they will gladly source for you. Also, they speak idiot. I walked in not knowing the name for something and referring to it generally as "shiny edible glittery stuff with flavor" and not only did they easily decipher this nonsense, they also walked me to where they had said items. I wish I could say this was the only time I had referred to something in a not proper way. Turns out they also have "flat not sharp knife things" for spreading frosting. And so much more. Jane's came highly recommended from a client of mine and it took me a little while to visit this gem but I sure am glad I did. I went on 04/15/2020 and they were nearly fully stocked with flour and yeast. They were out of most extracts but the nice woman helping me said they would get more in soon. If you have had trouble finding flour or yeast or other baking essentials this is definitely the place to go to. Not only is it a small business, it is also right around the corner from Gelson's so you can get your groceries at the same time! There was ample parking and the store was very clean. During the pandemic most stores have been out of flour and other banking essentials so I am grateful a client recommended Jane's. I told my friends and family about it already and now I'm notifying the public as well! I plan on visiting even after the pandemic ends because I enjoy cooking and baking. We had the most lovely time in this shop. My amateur chef of a husband was VERY impressed. The selection of items ranging from pans of all sizes to more sprinkles than you could ever dream of had us exploring the shop with glee for half an hour. Today, I called to find out if the shop would be open, tomorrow, Labor Day. Boy, was I bummed to find out, the shop is closing. Actually, last day opened was August 27th. This place is good in theory and I've been going since it was in Montrose, but things have been weird lately. The staff seems bored and untrained and they're not knowledgeable -- it's a cake decorating store and they can't find people who love cake decorating to staff it? It's the kind of place that needs enthusiastic, knowledgeable, outgoing staff to make the prices and nicheness work. They have a $5 minimum credit card policy which they enforce selectively and strangely. I didn't know about it and they rung up a $4.75 purchase for me without mentioning it. As I handed my card over I asked if they had another item I hadn't found and went to grab it eight feet away. When I got back, the woman behind the counter had run the transaction and refused to run another one on a card so I could purchase said item. This was super strange in that before she'd run it I had asked about another item. There was no hurry, no one was behind me in line. It seems pretty obvious to me that she shouldn't have run it. Then she was difficult and rude about it. I'm also surprised that they've started constantly playing country music. They also have a notice about how the $5 minimum is because of "minimum wage hikes and thefts because of Prop 47" -- which reclassed some non-violent crimes as misdemeanors and was a good thing! This struck me as a very icky thing to imply or say, much less print out and paste at the register. These are very conservative talking points and I'm uncomfortable supporting a business with obviously bad politics in this day and age. If you desperately need a cake box and are ok with that, this is a fine place, just don't expect help or kindness. I'll be avoiding it from now on. read more

I've been coming to Jane's for as long as I can remember, as far back to when they were located in Montrose, and my girls were really little. Actually, even before my daughters were born and I was into cake decorating as a teen (ahem which spans for more than half my life). I ordered my firstborn's 1st birthday cake from Jane's. Back then you could order cakes from them. It had a piped 3-D teddy bear on top of a quarter sheet cake, waaaaay before fondant became a hit. It's changed ownership and location since then, but it's still my favorite and go-to shoppe for cake decorating supplies and baking ingredients in the local Glendale/LaCanada area. I've moved away from decorating colored meringue, fondant and buttercream types of cakes, but they continue to offer a huge variety of colors, in several quality brands, colored sprinkles, extracts, even pre-made mixes (buttercream, meringue, macarons, cakes) for those times when you need to cheat!! ... the list goes on, to baking pans, cooking equipment, candy making tools, cookie cutters (an entire wall), waaaay cool gadgets... you name it. One of the most valuable commodities that they do NOT sell here, which I have found so priceless, is their knowledge. That's right! And even better, they don't charge for it!! On my last visit, I happened to mention my frustration with a dry chocolate cake recipe. The gentleman, who seemed to be the owner, turned around and gave me the recipe he uses as well as several tips. Another time, I was stumped to find a hollow space in the first brioche I made, and the staff offered a tip which I implemented on my next attempt... which helped it perfectly along!! They have a ton of baking experience and insight from years and years of working with the oven. I never expected Jane's to be as resourceful as it has in this last year, when I started some serious baking at home. Some of my go-to and favorite products here include Callebaut dutch processed cocoa, crispy mini chocolate balls (tiny crispy things you use to top your cupcakes, pudding, mousse etc.), King Arthur cake and bread flour, gold foil cake platters and cake boxes. Jane's has just about all the tools and quality ingredients you would need to create a spectacular cake or dessert creation. Prices vary, depending on the quality and brand of the products. You will find several varieties of imported fleur de sel, which can get pricey, as well as higher end Valrhona chocolate. But they also offer portioned basic bulk ingredients at a fraction of the cost you would have to expend at a specialty store, so you get the best of both worlds, and can be practical with your budget. Save your receipts. When you reach $100 in purchases (before taxes), you get a $10 discount on your next purchase. Cake and cookie decorating classes available. Parking is free in the Gelson's plaza. This is the coolest place in the world for party planning and baking. I was using Amazon and etsy looking for items for a shower I'm throwing, but decided not to pay 45 dollars for a cake topper that I will use exactly once. I then looked at bakeries and thought shower cakes will probably be cheaper than wedding cakes because there's so much more planning that goes into weddings, but I was wrong. Those fondant two-tiered cakes are about 300. So, then I think: I'm a chemist, I should be able to make a cake right? Right. I came here and found every single thing I needed (and some things I didn't need) for very good prices. I was going to make my own fondant but it sounds like an 'ordeal' and I just want one cake. Also, baby steps, so I found these tubs of pre-made fondant. Then I found colors for it, everything from copper to sea foam green. I've never seen so much edible decor. If things go as planned my multi-tiered fondant cake will cost forty bucks and I'll have stuff to make another one day. If it's a fail, there's still Portos down the street. *since this review I ran to Michael's for a few extra things and have to say that their cake section is almost double in price and only about 2 percent as big as this store. They do have fondant but it's 6 bucks more, cake boxes and trays are five times higher. Michael's may good for art supplies but Jane's is where it's at for pastry decorating. read more

I love finding "Hidden Gem" places like Jane's Cakes & Chocolates..!! The store is located in the famous and historic Honolulu Avenue shopping malls, Montrose CA. I'm not quite sure whether the #2 or #3 Baskin Robbins store but was established here in the Honolulu Avenue shopping district. In addition to its fame, some of the street scens of the late 80's popular tv drama, "Wonder Years" were shot here. I remember the scene where Kevin and Winnie were walking on the Honolulu Ave. The store is located on the first floor of old spanish colonial style structure. It's noticeable when you are walking, but driving by may cause you to miss the store. As I said, it's hidden~ This is DIY (do-it-yourself) cakes and chocolate supply store. If you really want to take time in creating cakes/chocolates and impress someone on Valentine's day, Birthday, Anniversay and other special occasions then THIS IS THE PLACE..!! I have to say I could not have established running a business without the supplies from Jane's Cakes. For example, they have everything you need to make a cake pop. From the cookbook, cast iron cake pop pans, to the chocolate coating, sprinkles, and even the plastic packaging used to make a yummy resalable and appealing treat. For every hundred dollars you spend, ten dollars will be deducted off your next purchase if you keep your receipts. They not only offer one on one cake decorating classes, but also offer group cake decorating for parties as well. They have ample parking, and the location of this store is near the 210 and 134 freeway. The store front is located inside the Von's and TJ Max shopping center next to a coffee house and a workout studio. This will be one of the business that I will frequently go to just for my baking needs. My wife is a professional baker and she always needs to get those high quality ingredients and supplies which are usually only sold at very limited places. Jane's carries the professional grade products and they would also put them into smaller packages, which is very helpful for us. The store is a fabulous source for anything foodcrafty: baking, candymaking. They have hundreds of cookie cutters, almost as many plastic chocolate molds. You can find almost any baking pan here. They have a wide assortment of colored sanding sugars and sell the molding chocolate in various quantities from a quarter of a pound up. And -- it's all going away. The store is closing August 27. A real loss to the community as there is nowhere like this anywhere even remotely close, if at all. Recently purchased boxing supplies from Jane's only to discover once I got home, the cashier (Kaelyn) failed to ring up all my items because she could not find one of the items which I was purchasing on the cash register. Instead of Kaelyn asking one of her coworkers to assist her, she simply put the item to the side and pretended to ring it up. I did not notice Kaelyn putting the item to the side and not ringing it up until I returned home and but the box together to box up my baked goods. Her lack of care/concern rendered the box useless. Thanks Kaelyn for ruining my order (sarcasm). This was purposely done and not a simple mistake. How do I know? Because I watched her looking for the price and we had a conversation about the item as she was ringing (not) the item up. The box was useless without the insert and the experience left me feeling disappointed with my shopping experience. read more

Loved the old location, even did a class there once. But the current location is bigger with much more parking since it's near a supermarket. Definitely the place for baking cakes, decorations and chocolates. You can even by pre-made cake if you're in a rush or just want to do the decorating. While this place was great when we made cake pops and carrot cake, they don't have much for macarons. Still had great chocolate though to make a yummy ganache! read more

I'm going to miss coming to Jane's for all my baking needs. I was able to do party favors and bake my orders for 15 years because of Janes. There is no place like them. From the Honolulu location in Montrose to the La Canada location, Janes always had everything I needed. When brothers Tom and Troy bought the Montrose location, there were new items in weekly. When Tom fully took over and moved the location to La Canada, so many more new items were introduced and I made sure to ALWAYS share the location of "my cupcake supply shop" with others. One thing that made this business extra special was the relationships that were formed here between owner and clientele. It was so nice to see the business grow and meet new staff. Tom, I'll miss our small chats about life, hearing your distinct voice throughout the store, the tips you gave me to execute my orders, and the time you took to make sure all us customers found what we needed and more.
