My family's recent experience with Dr. Yuyaobilly B. Chai and the CEO, Dr. Winston Lin, exposed a shocking prioritization of financial contracts over actual patient health. 1. Forced Financial Contracts & Withholding Care: My daughter required overcrowding extractions from an oral surgeon before proceeding with orthodontic care. Dr. Chai mandated that we must install braces before the extractions are performed, explicitly admitting that this is "how I was trained" and that the office forces this sequence because prior patients get their extractions and "not return" to complete their financial contracts. There is no biological benefit to this; it is purely a financial lock-in tactic. Because I insisted on prioritizing the necessary extractions first, the orthodontic assistant completely forgot to finalize the orthodontic plan. Instead of communicating with me about a plan I hadn't even been shown, the office suddenly called me out of the blue to state they were canceling my daughter's scheduled oral surgery appointment and withholding her medical referrals purely because I hadn't signed that un-finalized orthodontic contract. 2. Deceptive Corporate Billing: The office routinely pads bills with automated codes for "Caries Risk Assessment" and "Oral Hygiene Instruction," which our insurance (BCBS FEP) explicitly categorizes as bundled, non-covered services that cannot be balance-billed to the patient. When I challenged this, the Office Manager used legal intimidation, falsely claiming that omitting these unconsented codes from my ledger would constitute "insurance fraud." 3. Management Ratification: I escalated these severe ethical and billing issues directly to the CEO, Dr. Winston Lin. Instead of correcting his staff's retaliation and deceptive billing threats, Dr. Lin completely ratified their actions and confirmed the clinic would refuse to treat my daughter unless I complied and signed their financial paperwork. Parents beware: This facility operates as a corporate contract machine first and a dental provider second. I have officially escalated these practices by filing formal complaints with the Dental Board of California and the California Department of Insurance. Look elsewhere if you want an honest provider who puts your child's health ahead of corporate quotas.

My daughter is autistic and non-speaking and also has some medical trauma, so being in any clinical setting is understandably upsetting for her. She is petrified from the moment we walk in; she cries on and off, clings to me like a koala, and refuses to open her eyes from the second we enter the building, but is still pretty compliant with her (very basic) exam. We usually have to wait 15-20 minutes before being taken back, which doesn't help either, but I get it. Today we got some of the usual stares and eye-rolls when my daughter started getting upset, which I don't like but tolerate. We are used to it. My daughter's exam began first, and the hygienist was wonderful with her. She finished before my son was done, so I took my daughter outside to grandma and then returned for my son. When I came back, my daughter's hygienist was huddled up with my son's (he was halfway through his exam, still in the chair) having an animated, whispered conversation that switched topic as soon as the one facing the doorway saw that I had returned (she all of a sudden started pointing to a picture of three kids at my son's hygienist's work station and started more loudly talking about them). In all honestly, they might not have been talking about us or my daughter's behavior during our visit, but it felt like they were. And they obviously knew that they looked like they were, since they so obviously changed the topic and manner in which they were speaking, and then abruptly ended the conversation. And as a nurse, believe me I get it. We all need to vent after a difficult assignment. But as the parent of a disabled child, it stings. I've come to expect this kind of behavior from average people when we're out and about, but in a professional/medical setting I expect better. It caught me off guard. We will probably continue to come here, because we have had mostly good experiences and I know everyone has an off day. It's also entirely possible that we were not the topic of conversation between these two hygienists, but it certainly seemed like we were, and it continues to bother me. My daughter does the best that she can, and it usually isn't "good enough" by most people's standards, but I am very, very proud of her and her progress. Maybe save the personal conversations about your patients for when they've left for the day.

She also sent via text the new patient paperwork ahead of time to make our visits seamless. Upon arrival for both visits, she and her front desk teammate were warm, welcoming, organized, thorough and we were seen within five to ten minutes of waiting. The staff clearly explains all procedures, answers any questions, and reviews insurance charges upfront to prevent surprises. They also schedule follow-ups to keep oral health on track, which is important since dental offices can be busy. The RDAs, Litzi and Ida, were attentive, patient, and made my children and me feel comfortable. The facility is spotless, the equipment is state-of-the-art, and the staff continuously sanitizes between patients. Teamwork and communication are excellent. They also provide a small goody bag of dental supplies per each child to take home which is thoughtful. Dr. Jackie truly cares and knows how to explain oral hygiene in a way children understand, giving me confidence in the care provided. I've been to other dental offices in Elk Grove, and this has been by far one of the best experiences with the most professional and friendly staff. When I later received a phone call, I thought it was a reminder, but instead I was told that I had "missed" an appointment. I explained that I never received any reminders. During that same call, I was informed that my other son's Monday appointment had been moved without my consent because it was supposedly not confirmed--despite me confirming it previously. I asked to speak with a manager and was told no manager was available. I then asked for a complaint number or another way to escalate the issue and was told there was none. The lack of accountability and the rude tone during this interaction were extremely disappointing. To make matters worse, I am currently caring for a child with sickle cell disease who was recently hospitalized, and I had just spent the entire night in the emergency room with my oldest son. Being treated with such disregard during an already stressful time was unacceptable. This experience shows a lack of care and value for families and patients. Because of this, I will be moving all of my children's dental care elsewhere.

Somehow, we finally made it in, and it turned out to be the best experience. Despite being terribly nervous--he was even shaking--the dental hygienist, Graycie, greeted my son with a warm smile and immediately put him at ease. I explained that he struggles with anxiety, and she truly worked her magic. She made him feel comfortable and safe, allowing him to ask questions without ever feeling rushed. Graycie explained every instrument she was going to use, the sounds they would make, and what he could expect throughout the visit. She even gave him a mirror so he could watch what she was doing if he wanted. I am really trying to build positive experiences for him, as dental visits in the past have not been easy--and this one made such a difference. If you have an anxious child, I highly recommend asking for Graycie. She is absolutely amazing. Not everyone is meant to work with children, especially in the medical field, and she truly is a gem. Thank God she was there to help my son get through today! Also, the office staff were incredibly friendly, the office was very clean, and overall it was an A+ experience.

They have you physically restrain your child, so that automatically puts them on edge and mine cried the entire time. (Of course resulted in being traumatized during future dentist visits.) Additionally, they didn't automatically give us a toothbrush/toothpaste bag after our most recent visit; it's standard for any child (or adult) after going to the dentist, so I thought this was odd. I asked about it and then had to wait while they figured out if my kid should get one. (Two stars because the first Dentist we saw at this location wasn't as bad as the second Dentist.) If your child is old enough to just hold still, they'll probably be fine. However, the Dentist my child has seen recently doesn't seem to be good with toddlers or understand how to interact with them.

However, I will no longer be going to this dentist, and this decision is solely due to Dr. Sato. I feel like every time I get examined after a cleaning, there is always something he recommends that I need work on or will eventually need, although I have no concerns or pain with any of my teeth. When he suggests all these unnecessary treatments, it gives me anxiety and makes me question whether I should get the work done or not. I always receive a printout of the recommended services and how much they will cost. I understand that it is ultimately up to me whether I want to proceed with any treatment, but the constant reminders of the RECOMMENDED work makes me feel pressured, and I don't like that feeling. It also makes me question whether it's all about making money. Going to the dentist already gives me a lot of anxiety, and I'm sure that's the case for many people. At the end of the day, I don't want a doctor who makes me feel like there is always something wrong with my teeth. Throughout my years, I have seen a lot of doctors and none has ever made me feel pressure like Dr. Sato. Maybe it's his personality or how he approaches his patients. My goal in finding a good dentist has always been about finding a great dental hygienist, but this time around I feel like I need to move on and find another doctor who makes me feel more comfortable and at ease. Lately, whenever I get some sort of work done--like a crown, a root canal, or even a simple cleaning--my nerve seems to get triggered and causes pain elsewhere. Rule of thumb: if there is nothing wrong with your tooth and no pain, leave it alone.
