I listened to a bunch of podcasts to familiarize myself with the home buying process, and all the information pointed to having a great mortgage broker and real estate agent. Sure, it's possible to do it on your own without a mortgage broker, but I am so glad I didn't and found Rick on yelp! I looked at his amazing reviews and reached out to him the same day. He was quick to respond and after talking to Rick, I realized there were so many things that I didn't know about the loan process. He has over 40 years of experience and knowledge to impart on us and made sure we understood each process before proceeding with any type of action. Not only was he knowledgeable, he was also very patient with us and broke down jargon to educate us in a way that we understood. So then we got pre-approved and were ready to go house hunting. We were set to leave for a month's vacation in Asia and ended up winning a bid for a house on the day of our flight! Talk about terrible timing, but Rick worked with us every step of the way. He gave us reassurance and a piece of mind that everything was going to work out. As a first time home buyer, we needed his calming presence and confidence since we were very anxious about our first huge financial investment. His communication skills even with the different time zones were top notch! We found a great place on Zillow, toured the place, loved it and then submitted an application. The listing suggested we should put in an offer more than rental price listing on Zillow, which we found a little odd, but submitted a price. We then had some follow-up questions but when we asked them, she only responded by explaining we just had to send our best and highest bid and couldn't reveal anything about other bids besides ours was the lowest. This seemed like a classic strategy to drive up the price and do a 'bait and switch' false advertising. She also was extremely rude, actively trying to end the conversation and saying she had already talked to my other roommates and we didn't need to talk. When I said I wasn't comfortable making a higher bid without knowing any more information about the other bids, she said "don't worry I have a lot of other people who are willing to pay higher". I don't know if this blind bidding war is legal in SF, but this felt pretty shitty and scammy. From reading other reviews, it seems she's a little rude to other potential renters as well.
