We searched for a coffee shop to grab a drink before we started our drive back home. Turns out Java John's is the only coffee shop open Sundays in downtown Decorah. We ordered two iced lattes and two muffin tops. We added an extra espresso shot to the lattes which was delicious. I ordered a Cafe Mocha, a large coffee and a muffin top. Usually you add chocolate to anything and it taste pretty good. The mocha had 3 pumps of Godiva chocolate, I'm not sure if it was the milk, the water or the fact the milk was being heated incorrectly- the mocha tasted like if the products were stored in an old persons home in a musty house. It was horrible and that taste followed me throughout the day. The muffin top was crumbly and old like it was froze then thawed out. DO NOT GET A MOCHA!!! the coffee my husband had wasn't too bad. Visited on a Sunday - late AM, mostly because Magpie's up the road isn't open on Sunday's, which we didn't realize. Too bad! Anyway, this spot caught our eye, and had a more local vibe then the newer coffee roastery in the old JCP space. Quaint coffee / diner on the corner off Main Street. I ordered a cappuccino and love that I was asked if I wanted 2 or 3 shots in it - awesome :) the pumpkin scones were a bit crisp, but we were in around 11 so they were probably fresh at 7. A small, bustling coffee shop that is perched right on the corner of Main Street. The ambience is what you think of when you think of a local coffee shop -- coffee house music, charm, and small town pleasantries. I only had the large cafe mocha and it was terrific. Steamed to perfection and it had just enough chocolate goodness that didn't overwhelm the taste buds. A lot of hip coffee shops try to out do themselves nowadays and this is always my first test....can they make a good cafe mocha. They did. Staff were friendly, but not super fast. However, there is no need to rush when you step into this place. Don't get the coffee to go. Grab a table, sit down, and enjoy a good conversation with your friend or strike one up with a stranger. The net/net of Java John's is the highest quality coffee and/or tea in friendly, comfortable confines with homemade baked goods made fresh every morning. Do you require anything more to start your day? Quiche? Breakfast Croissant? Scones? Their near-famous Muffin Tops? Cinnamon Rolls? Bread Pudding? Homemade toast with Peanut Butter or Strawberry Jam? All made fresh every morning... JJ's nearby coffee roaster roasts selected arabica beans to order so the beans are always fresh; their teas are Tazo and Native American Herbal. Their baristas are well trained and small town friendly. As hard as this is to believe, even for me, I can't think of a negative. Honest. I do have a concern though... they should raise their prices. This is by far the cutest coffee shop I've ever been in. We stopped in for coffee and bakery on our way back to St. Paul and the ladies behind the counter were as sweet as pie. We had a SF Blackcherry Latte, Large light roast coffee, 2 muffin tops and cinnamon roll, all for $7. At Starbucks it would have been $12+ and it was all delicious. This was the only coffee shop open on Sunday, and thank goodness for that! I am an avid tea drinker and my better half cannot function without coffee. The shop is decorated really neatly. It's a quaint, little place on the main strip on Decorah. There's even a back patio to sip your hot beverage outside. I enjoyed that touch. They also appear to have a lot of nice music. I only knocked off points because the coffee wasn't really that great, the service slow, and my tea was burnt. They also use the box chai that anyone can buy in a grocery store for the same price of one drink in a coffee shop. I know many places do that, but it's incredibly disappointing when I see it. Overall, a good atmosphere to sit and relax or enjoy music, but not the greatest of beverages. read more

This is now a favorite. Their homemade desserts are wonderful. The price is right, too. A dessert and an Earl Grey cost me $3.25 or so... That's awesomely affordable,. The locals seem to support this place in large numbers. The staff is friendly, too. All around, this place :"rings the bell" and then some. I like the large number of electrical outlets. There is practically one for each booth. You can tell they cater to the college crowd. What a cool coffee house! I cannot wait to return. While in town exploring Decorah, I stopped in this cute coffee shop for a little Chai and to get on WiFi for a bit. The staff was very helpful and even suggested a different Chai than I had originally planned on ordering. It's small-ish, but I enjoyed this much better than some huge coffee shop buzzing with hipsters. Music was a lot of Pink Floyd, which was great. I've been several times because I have a Luther student. Really friendly people, but the coffee is merely ok. And their famous muffin tops are just icky. We've tried many of the baked goods and they taste of margarine. We go to Rubys for amazing cinnamon rolls and bread. Quality and taste at this cute shop should be just as good as that. Especially in a Scandinavian town. We've waited 20-30 minutes for two coffees. We're not impatient people, but if we're visiting our kid, we don't want to wait this long. Friendly? Yes. They also have evening music, which is fun. I hate writing reviews like this. We've been recommended this place over and over again. I think they just need to tweak. Start with lots of real butter. Buy better flour. Speed up the service. Taste test some new recipes with some people you trust. We'll come back once more in a few months and review again. read more

I sat down to wait for our drinks to be done when an employee berated me for bringing in take out from another restaurant while we waited for our order. Horrible...no order number system or name to an order system. People just randomly grabbing coffee orders as they're called out. After waiting 25 minutes we reminded the cashier about the order. After another 10 minutes still no coffee. We had to be somewhere so we asked for a refund. The cashier continued taking orders and grabbing supplies from a back room. Waited another 5-7 minutes and asked if we could have our money back. She told us she did refund the money. No you didn't... she said, oh I thought you paid with a card. No, we did not. Someone got their order refunded to their card. Haha...another lady handed the cashier a $20 and asked for change. The cashier looked in the drawer and handed the the lady $40 and said, I can't give you change. The lady told her I only gave you $20 but thank you. This place is a mess. In 2013, a reviewer wrote: " I'm so glad Decorah finally decided to add a coffee shop that decided to act as a coffee shop." In 2015, sadly, that's changed. With new owners comes big changes. The coffee is still good, the people are awesome. The hours have improved. Unfortunately, the new owners have opted for a brighter cafeteria-style, larger food menu, large, ugly coolers and a louder music system. They don't even sell homemade biscotti anymore. It has an unfortunate Starbucks feel to it, which may attract tourists but which has already pushed some local regulars away. read more

Java John's coffee drinks are as generic as their name. Warm sweet milk with burnt coffee-'Char'bucks style!! They do have plenty of room, so if you need to work or study, it's a good choice. Just don't expect quality specialty coffees that are brewed properly. Go to Impact Coffee across town for that. read more

Coffee was fabulous and the conversations with local Luther College professors was even better. Before our summer trip to Decorah, I'd read on Yelp about the delicious chocolate cake. Java John's is such a wonderful establishment for the adorable Small College Town it resides in. I am sad to say that I didn't get enjoy it while I was a student as I graduated Luther in '08 and she didn't open until after my leaving but I am absolutely in love with this little gem every time I return for Homecoming Alumni visits! This review is to highlight their outstanding willingness to serve their customers! As my husband and I now reside outside Boston I only have the joy of experiencing my favorite Java Johns Dark Roast every once in awhile. (Or when my sister-in-law ships me a bag ). We recently found out that we are expecting our first child and yes while drinking coffee is a highly debated subject when pregnant (as a celiac) having access to a caffeine boost is often a necessity for me a few times a week. After attempting to substitute a few local Boston coffees when I ran out of JJ's Dark Roast I nearly (absolutely) lost it in the sink due to the poor quality substitutes I had in my cabinet. In desperation I called Java Johns to inquire if they would be willing to mail me cross country the largest bag they have of my favorite roast... they not only were completely accommodating it arrived within a week!!
