The reason the place is great is because the barber is great. Obvious right? The guy's name is John. He is simply excellent. He will remember you next time you come in. Went here twice. First time had a pretty good cut, it was cheap, turned out well, 4+ star experience. Second time, I made an appointment around closing time, the guy clearly rushed the cut, took about 10 minutes to do the whole thing. I had to go home and trim a lot of stray hairs and try to fix it myself. One of the clippers was pretty consistently pulling my hair both times, not super painful but not extremely pleasant either. Decor is old-timey barbershop, ok but they could use a renovation. They don't take credit cards. read more

The man that cut my hair had been there since the beginning. He was very nice but a little too old to be cutting hair. He didn't do a bad job, but he didn't really do that great of a job either. He didn't really listen to what I asked him to do. I could tell he was doing more of a traditional look when what I asked for was a little more of a modern twist on a classic cut. The younger barber cutting the hair of the guy next to me seemed like he might be a little more capable. Definitely had the old barbershop look and feel though. read more

I've been a customer of Jay's barbershop for over 14 years now, it's a rare place to get a great hair cut every time everytime you go, but Jay nails it time after time and for a great price. I recommend Jay's to friends on a regular basis and if someone is new in town I always send him to Jay's. read more

Great service and warm atmosphere.

I've been going to John for the past two years of my college life, and couldn't have asked for a better haircut experience. I wanted to make sure I sent in a review and hopefully brought them more business, as these two deserve it. Victor runs the place, and is the nicest man in the world. John's been my personal barber, and as a 20-22 year old college kid going to him, I can assure he knows how to cut all types of hair, as I've seen him in action. As a member of the football team, John has seemingly become the personal barber for many of our players, most of whom come back to him even after graduating given that they're in the greater Chicago area. Two of the best in the business, and I will make sure to go by there for a haircut every time I'm back in Evanston post-graduation. read more

Average haircut, average price... Man of few words... "Not too short, Not too long"? Results- shorter than expected.

I had a 10 AM appointment scheduled two weeks ago. Showed up at 9:50 AM. Sat until 10:25 AM. The 10:20 appointment showed up and sat next to me. Decided it was time to leave. Moved to Evanston recently and was looking to try someone closer than my original Chicago Barbershop. Would have loved to try them. But no one ever showed up for my appointment. I believe I was scheduled for John? Not sure. Again it was my first time. 1 star is based on the no show. read more

I was a big fan of this place because it's exactly what you want if you're a guy and I hate to do this because Victor is exceedingly nice and it's next to a great bakery and they always have a paper to read and a game on but the previous few times I've been in there, they've really made errors that shouldn't happen when you're getting a basic haircut. A lot of people still like it, and most of the Northwestern football program goes there which speaks to the quality of the place, but you expect a haircut to be quick look great and these guys have challenges at this point in their careers. It's not for me anymore but they have extremely strong customer loyalty, parking's very very easy to get and it's an old school type place which you just don't see enough of anymore. read more

Been coming here a number of years. Appointments are requested but 4 out of 5 times John runs behind schedule. Today it was 15 minutes behind. If I can be consistently on time, why can't he! He does give a good haircut. It's a shame that they can't keep appointments straight. read more

Great neighborhood barbershop, serving neighbors from all over Evanston and beyond. Jay, Victor and Colin (Saturdays only) are personable, entertaining and provide excellent haircuts. I ended up getting a horrendous hodge-podge of a hair cut even though I specifically requested a professional hair cut for an interview. It was very much worse than any hair cut I have received at Great Clips or generic $5 barber shops on Devon and Lawrence. In fact, I could have definitely done a better job of it myself. Worst of all, the damage was difficult to repair until my hair grew back again. read more

This guy is a joke. I walked in for a shave and walked out covered in dry blood. Not only did he nick my skin a bunch of times, but he missed patches of hair on my face, got my shirt all wet by laying a wet towel on my shoulder, and had me pay full price. Avoid this clown show at all costs. read more
