No doubt the 1950's and 60's we're the heyday of American diner culture. That is why so many that survived to present day decorate the premises with the icons and visuals of that time. It can be a bit too cutecie with Elvis, James Dean and Marilyn on every wall, but it does appeal to those alive at the time. For those of us who don't remember (or no longer can) it is an historic marker, otherwise harmless, worth acknowledging. JB's Cousin's Diner on RT. 70, Tom's River, NJ, is representative of this corner of restaurant world. It not only has a full sized statue of Ms. Monroe from the sidewalk subway grate scene in Seven Year Itch, standing on the counter, but it also has paisley formica covering the L-shaped lunch counter top to bottom. The entire dining room feels like a time capsule. I liked it in a dusty old comic book sort of way. And, they know about breakfast. My Farmer's Omelet was a full three egger, loaded with pepper, onion, Italian sweet, potato and feta. The side of home fries nicely crisped. The Bunn drip coffee, hot, kicky and free flowing. Old fashioned rye toast richly buttered. Service friendly and engaging with smile and chatter. Totally enjoyed it, and would have been moved to 5 stars if it offered credit card payment, rather than cash only. Customer convenience has to account for something.

Everything is delicious from breakfast to burgers to hot meals. The atmosphere is warm, not just the staff but the other customers... all very welcoming. They even offer fresh baked cookies and pastries that are always a surprise and out of this world. So thankful they stayed open for take out during this challenging time.

And, no I am not awarding four stars for the service approach towards diners ... she did refill my coffee mug once and then surprisingly just took the creamers away without asking (I drink my coffee black but she didn't know that.). Clearly she has favorites because the guy in the booth next to me got the lovey-dovey "hon" treatment. The Sand Castle has a feeling of having been worn down by the waves through the years type of place because many of the booth chairs and counter chairs exhibit wear and even more than a few tears. On a cold November Saturday morning I could feel the chill as I sat in my booth sipping my coffee (And, I wasn't anywhere close to the front door.). So onto the four stars ... but don't say I didn't warn you about service and ambiance. Well, it feels like a shore diner and I like that feel but yea worn out a bit. Quite awhile ago stopped by for dinner and the food was really good with lots of tempting options. I always judge diners by their soup and the soup was top notch! Our meals were enjoyable at a reasonable price. And, then I just forgot to review the diner. But decided to return for breakfast today after a long Friday night. Coffee arrived promptly and was really decent coffee but the amazing part of my breakfast was how quickly the really wall prepared omelette was served. It was like in the blink of any eye and for many a promptly delivered breakfast meal is a real plus (I appreciated it!!!!). Although the waitress really didn't want to be bothered with me the rather short diner breakfast menu had the classics and that quickly prepared omelette was a tasty WESTERN. The homefries were really good ... actually they were great even without onions in them (Waitress never asked if I'd like onions and rushed away so I didn't ask but these potatoes didn't need onions.). Toast was toast and the jam/jelly selection was universally grape jelly with one orange marmalade. A very good breakfast and I wasn't here to make friends just to warm up ooops ok, so I didn't warm up but the coffee helped, and to do some work. Still worth the food if you're in the neighborhood!

I was too tired to go in & eat but I made myself pull into bc I was too hungry for another bowl of cereal for dinner. I didn't realize until I was brought my order that it was closing time but when I asked for my dinner to be boxed so I could eat it at home so they could close up, they wouldn't have it, they told me not to worry about the time, but to please sit and enjoy my meal. I'll be honest..this southern girl didn't expect this type of hospitality in NJ but I was pleasantly surprised & gracious for it. From that meal forward they were my go to diner. I didn't have anything that I didn't like. The seafood Alfredo was one of my favorites! And on my last day at the hospital, I asked the owner to cater breakfast for my coworkers as a way of me thanking them for being so welcoming & he went above & beyond with the variety of food & the amount of food he delivered far exceeded what I paid for! All the staff loved the pancakes, sausage, French toast, bacon, bagels, fresh fruit, etc. There was enough for 3 different units to eat! This diner truly went above & beyond on making this out of towner feel at home. Thank you Band Wagon Diner for your delicious food, awesome hospitality & keeping this tired nurse fed!!

We swung by on a whim, enchanted by the sparking, beckoning appearance of the building. I was sad and confused to see some low Yelp scores after our visit today. We both had excellent omelets, and even more amazing service from our server (Kali, Kaily - not sure how to spell). She immediately adapted to his strange speech due to his disease, was on point, and warming. The strong coffee was delicious! I found the women's restroom to be spotless, as was the rest of the establishment. Even the shiny ceiling decor was dazzling & clean. (When you look up in most places - it's not!) The dessert counter looked amazing - but we were too full to indulge. We will be back, just for that! They have a Cannoli cheesecake that looks amazing and worth returning for. I recommend giving this diner a go, especially in the off-season like we did. It's probably hard to keep with the summer tourists. I hope to see them succeed through the summer as they did in December.
