If you want the bare minimum service, with a side order of nasty attitude, go to the TR diner and have the older woman with the bad red dye job and the "Karen Cut" wait on you. She's nice as pie to the "Regulars" who sit in there for hours getting getting unlimited refills on their coffee, but to other customers, she was unfriendly and did the absolute bare minimum. Headed out to the Toms River Diner the other night with a friend in a wheel chair and want to start by saying that getting in and out of the diner in a wheelchair was easy. There is a smooth ramp in off the parking lot and wheeling right up to a table was seamless! Once we were all settled, we ordered: Cheeseburger platter with fries-big and generous-fries extra crispy Sauteed shrimp dinner-again generous-came with soup and a veg side Turkey dinner-came with stuffing, gravy, a salad, bread and extra cranberry Overall, hearty what you might expect at a diner food. This was a standard NJ diner. There were a number of booths and tables to sit at. The menu had lots of choices as well, again, traditional NJ diner choices. The service was friendly while the food came out quickly. I had a chicken salad club ($9.75). It came with coleslaw that was very watery, not great. There was also a side of fries that were pleasant. The chicken salad was decent at best. It did come with bacon which added some flavor to the bland chicken salad. The chicken salad was missing seasoning unfortunately. Lots of specials. Food is always very good and service is big as well. Only thing is they insist they have nothing gluten free which is a real put off for us as my husband has celiac so we can only eat breakfast here. Although, our Waitress was polite and attentive, the owner was horrible. I was dining with a friend, who happened to have a service animal. They sat us and five minutes later, the owner comes to holler at us about the dog sitting next to my friend. This service animal is used for emotional stability in social environments, and was doing his job. After we moved him to the ground, the owner continued to stare at us while we ate and was impolite. As diner's go this one is going to fall somewhat below average. Re-opened after being closed for some time we step into your standard NJ Diner. We are seated in a booth near the front windows and all of the shelving was disgusting with dust and dirt like it hadn't been cleaned in years. Was even a dead spider as well, but we move on. Coffee was lukewarm and weak. 1 egg dish was fine though the hashbrowns were tasteless. I ordered scrambled eggs soft & Taylor ham well with fries and gravy. Eggs were dry as the Sahara while the Taylor ham was barely cooked. Fries were hot but gravy tasted like blah. Coffee: The coffee at the Toms River Diner was brewed hot and fresh and the waitress kept it refilled. Food: The Toms River Diner menu has everything a diner typically has. There are all the breakfast favorites including omelets, waffles, and pancakes. There was page of lunch specials on the Toms River Diner menu. I was hoping to find a special that spoke to me but decided to order the pork chops. I decided to upgrade my salad to a side Greek Salad and I'm glad I did. The small Greek salad had everything including anchovies. Sometimes I can't even find a dinner size greek salad with anchovies. The pork chops themselves were presented well, but they were dry. I was kind of bummed and hoping for better pork chops. The mashed potatoes and corn were bland and nothing to write home about. Service: The waitress at the Toms River Diner was friendly and our food came out fast. I have no complaints. The Toms River Diner has now been renovated and is under new ownership, after being closed for a couple years. The Toms River Diner is where I grew up visiting as a kid and teenager for many years. I have witnessed its many incarnations. It now more or less has the same general format as before, but there are new furnishings and decor. The menu has also been reinvigorated. I thought that the soup, the entree, and the veggie side were all very good. The owner or the manager greeted me coming and going and seemed to care that I enjoyed my meal. You can come as a single guy and just sit at the counter, or you can come with family and friends. The waitstaff seems to be all experienced from other locations and well trained. They are not open 24 hours anymore, as they had been in the past. Definitely check the hours if you're going late. However, now that I'm no longer a teenager, that doesn't matter to me! read more

Food portions are huge. Service is pretty quick every time we have visited. You can never go wrong with breakfast.

Haven't been here in years. I know they recently have new ownership and it's been renovated as well. I was really impressed with my burger. The fries on the other hand I was not a big fan of , but that didn't change my mind about the 5/5 review. They've definitely upgraded here and it's pretty big Menu too. We went here tonight, and as expected it was fantastic. Very friendly atmosphere, our waitress was a sweetheart and the man who I am assuming is the manager-owner pitched in to help clear tables and get take away boxes. I am wondering if he could be the same man others are complaining about? He was very friendly. Coffee was fresh. Hubby and son had chicken parm sandwich; mom had a fajita panini, daughter had chicken fingers and I had a French dip. Typical diner selections but all delicious and fresh. Never had to ask for drink refills, waitress was attentive and as I said, a sweetheart. We live in Lacey and are sure to make the trip back there when we want the diner! read more

Major disappointment! After being a regular customer at the old diner I waited anxiously for the new diner to open. George S. stated his review EXACTLY as I feel. Granted the food at the old was not perfect, but you went home feeling like you had a meal. Food is POORLY COOKED. Short cuts are taken and could they be less generous with the serving of those awful french fries or onion rings? I bet they'll try. The owner seems to be a nice man, but that's as far as it goes. He is the one ultimately responsible for portion sizes and food quality, and he fails miserably here. Food is expensive, low grade in quality and all 3 times I was tempted to go into the kitchen to show the cook how to make eggs or a stupid burger. How talent-less can you be? Host (assume owner or manager) gave friendly greeting and played with 4 year old walking to the table. Waitress was excellent. Second time eating at this diner and it is definitely better than the Crystal Diner (any diner is) and has descent diner food. Problem is the manager has zero PR skills and needs a course in hospitality. Worst part was server took order for bacon as side with breakfast and sausage was brought. Kitchen made the error and plated the sausage with the eggs and pancakes. Server comes back with bacon and say you have to give back sausage if you want bacon according to manager. So with already used fork and eaten off of plate sausage is returned, hmmm is sausage reheated and served to another costumer or is manger that lacking of PR skills that he is throwing out sausage??? This is a perfect place to stop on your way to Seaside Heights. You can't miss it with all the Sunflowers surrounding it. It's a typical diner, but we all enjoyed the food and our waitress was super friendly. The burgers, we were told, are made fresh daily and they were quite good. Let me preface by saying, Jersey is known for some great food, and our diners. Usually in the same place. Therefore, the diner is considered an important eating place, as it's also your area identifier, and/or landmark. The original Toms River Diner may have ticked those boxes in the past, however, that's why it's called, the past. The newly renovated version is definitely one thing; in Toms River. And, that's the best thing I have to say about it today. The decor: It's fairly middle of the road, usual stuff, with an upper class flirtation, and that's as far as it goes. But, we don't go to our diners for the decorations, so, the decor gets a half-pass. However, what doesn't get a pass, is when customers in the next booth, feel they need to alert you to the large beetle coming your way across the window ledge. Thank you, citizen, your diligence & outspokeness was appreciated. With more waitstaff than customers to be taken care of, the old adage applies; If you have time to lean, you have time to clean. The menu: Standard diner fare, with a couple different stand-outs, like the Impossible Burger, which is a newer plant-based "meat", and, if made properly, is almost indistinguishable from beef. I've had it in other places, and I recommend trying it. But, what really stood out here, was the price. Four dollars more for the impossible burger, without the fixins, or what they call, "deluxe". Their deluxe being the usual burger stylings which are normally included, like, lettuce/tomato. Beyond that, nothing to write home about. Close your eyes & think of every diner menu...same thing. The service: On this, my first, and ultimately my last visit, as the French say; horrible'. Our waitress, for lack of a worse term, took a while initially getting to us, which, sort of no big, we were reading the menu. Little did I know, this was the precurser to the rest of the "service" we could expect... I ordered a reuben, my mom, a wrap. Fairly standard diner meals, quick & easy. Well, the person making them obviously has never eaten a sandwich, or has always had terrible sandwiches. My reuben came sizzling hot, with no warning. No doubt from the microwave. Coupled with the fact the dry, paper thin corned beef was falling out of the sandwich, along with the literal mound of sauerkraut & melting cheese falling off, on 2 slices of too small bread, made it virtually impossible to pick up & eat. Mom's wrap was the same; too soggy to pick up. When the waitress finally came by to see how we were doing, I told her, to which she replied, she'd go tell "him", whoever that was. When she finally decided to come back, she proceeded to try & waitresssplain me on what a reuben actually is, and if I didn't like it, sorry, that's the truth. Had I not been with my mother, I would've berated this simpleton on the spot. The prices: Bring your wallet, this place ain't cheap. They must be trying to recoup the renovation expenses, because I didn't see the prices reflected in the quality of the food or the waitress. The checkout/manager: When I told the girl at the register about my dissatisfaction, she seemed genuinely concerned, and wanted to somehow rectify the situation. But, the manager/owner, and I think, father of the girl promptly came & took over to hear the situation. It physically pained him to offer an apology, like, seriously, I think I saw a muscle spasm in his lips when he barely, quietly uttered the phrase under his breath. He proceeded to tell me to come to him next time this happens. Sooo, 1) This isn't the 1st time this has happened & 2) Do you actually think I'm coming back to this joke? I've been reading locals rave about this place, which can only lead to one conclusion; there are a lot of complacent people out here who've never eaten a quality meal & had good service. And, they think they're still at the old diner. If you go, and you should, always make your own conclusion, I hope you have a better experience than we did.
