I sincerely feel that I was profiled by this man and he rudely insinuated that I cannot afford to pay a contractor, not sure if its because I am black, because I am a woman, or because I live in a blue-collar neighborhood in Taylor. I utilized Home Depot's ProReferral Service for quotes on mud/tape on new drywall with some repair on other walls in my bathroom and kitchen. I made this clear to Home Depot, I made this clear to the receptionist. He showed up early and sat in the driveway for several minutes. When he came in, he walked in and said "red flag." I was confused, he then goes on to say whose done this, referring to my new drywall. I responded with a contractor. Then he asks why isn't he mudding and taping. I'm still confused and I state that because he's hit his maximum budget from me and I want someone else to mud and tape. Then he become bizarrely irate and state that I am the red flag and that my contractor walked off because I did not pay him. Error 1: My general contractor did not walk off my job. He is at the house as I speak continuing my renovation. He actually wanted to speak with any drywall subcontractor that I hired with specifics about what should be done. Error 2: My general contractor has been paid EVERY. SINGLE. PENNY. that is in his contract in the excess of $38,000. Next, as a consumer, I have the right to spend my hard-earned money anyway I see fit. I also subcontracted an electrician who was paid in full, my flooring is being subcontracted, and my painters are being subcontracted. Why, because as a consumer it is my right. My general contractor could have done it all, but I didn't want him to because of some things that we did not see eye-to-eye on. I feel that accepting a contract from me and gaining my business and money is a privilege, and it would be silly of me to continuously spend my money when we are not seeing eye-to-eye, so my general contractor and I mutually agreed that he would finish out everything that he was under contract for, and that I would hire the subcontractors of my choice that could get things done in the time frame that I wanted. It was a great compromise that we were both comfortable with. That, though, is none of JC Handyman Svc. LLC's business. None, and I mean NONE, not even the drywall subcontractor that came right before JC Handyman Svc. LLC, of the subcontractors that have provided estimates even made more than a slight inquiry about who else has worked there and why. ALL, listened to what I wanted done, took their measurements, and provided their quotes with time-frames. ALL that have completed their jobs have been paid in full. ALL others have received the deposit in which they asked for. I have not debated not one deposit amount. It is a fair assurance that you do not get stiffed, which is what Mr. JC should have done. Instead of giving me the third degree in my own house and telling me how much of a red flag I am without knowing me, he should have kept his personal thoughts and opinions in his head, lowered his voice, took his measurements, and provided me with my quote. Now as his inside voice told him how big of a "red flag" this African American female is, he should have simply stated that he required a deposit before beginning any work, which is what all other subcontractors do. I am glad that he did make his intolerances towards me well know, as I would have been very disgusted to do any type of business such an organization. BTW Mr. JC, do not judge the book by the cover. I have a PhD-ABD, in Technology and hold a MS and BS in Mathematics, I am a mathematics professor at a local college. My husband (yes, yes I am married Mr JC) has a BA, MA and manages business analysts. We live where we live because we enjoy growing our bank accounts over big houses and fancy cars. It is never wise to live above your means, its what's wrong with society today.
